Former US Army Captain Mia Starr has built a new life for herself in Denver, far away from camel spiders and sand—and the terrible secrets of her first deployment to Iraq. She isn’t looking for a relationship, especially not with an intrusive photojournalist. Joaquin Ramirez might be sexy, but in her experience, photojournalists only want to make a buck off other people’s suffering. Still, the universe must have a sick sense of humor because it keeps throwing her together with Joaquin, making the desire she feels for him harder and harder to resist.
An undeniable attraction…
As a Pulitzer Prize-winning news photographer, Joaquin has everything a single straight guy could want—except the right woman. When he meets Mia while shooting a crime scene, he immediately sees beyond her cold exterior to the vulnerable woman beneath. Though the police consider her a suspect, he’s sure she’s innocent. Someone is killing soldiers—and trying to pin the blame on her. Unable to resist the pull between them, Joaquin stands by her only to find himself snared in the killer’s net as well.
A twisted soul hungry for revenge…
Mia can’t help it when the heat between her and Joaquin melts away her preconceptions. As their passion explodes, danger draws ever closer. When it becomes clear that Mia is the killer’s true target, she must trust Joaquin with a secret that could ruin her … or risk losing the love of a lifetime.

Deadly Intent, the 8th book in the I-Team series by Pamela Clare, was so yummy. Joaquin Finally got his book, and I am so happy about it. Joaquin has been a strong, sweet and supportive secondary character all through this series and I really wanted him to get a HEA! I have to say I was a little worried that Joaquin wouldn't stand out in a series full of sexy alpha males like Julian, Zach, Nate and super sexy Marc(my fav), but he totally held his own, while staying true to his character.
Joaquin was so sensual, passionate, and loyal. He didn't all of a sudden become a super kick-ass alpha, but he was still brave, strong and protective. I loved how different he was from the other heroes in this series. When all the others were law enforcement or military bad-asses, he was artistic, and creative. A photographer looking at life though his camera. I also loved having a sexy salsa dancing Latino hero. It's nice to have a hero of a different ethnicity for a change. Mia was strong, honest, and brave. I loved that she was a former Army Captain. I also loved that the author had Mia's character deal with sexual harassment while in the Army, but power through and stand up for herself. I love Strong heroines and Mia was very strong, but she was also vulnerable and sweet.
Joaquin and Mia had a strong almost instant connection. I loved that Joaquin didn't rush Mia because he wanted more than sex. There was tons of sexual tension in this book and Joaquin was sexy as hell. I loved how strong Joaquin was for Mia while not trying to undermine her, like she was some "helpless" girl. The plot of this book was good too, but I found it slightly predictable, as I figured out who the killer was within a few chapters. That didn't take away from my enjoyment of the read at all. I loved getting to see all of my favorites from past books. I love how close all the characters are and how attached I feel to them. I also want to say I really liked that Pamela Clare had Sophie still dealing with issues from the last book's terrorist attack. PTSD is very real and it was nice that everyone wasn't just all better in a blink of an eye. I am so glad I got this book from Netgalley. It was nice to live in the I-team world and see Joaquin find love. I really hope to get Matt's book soon!!!
There are three things you can always count on when picking up a Pamela Clare book—an outstanding story, an exquisite romance, and a hero to die for.
Let me start by saying that I was very excited to know that there would be the eighth installment of the I-Team series. But what really made me squeal in utter delight was the fact that it was Joaquin’s story! If you are a fan of this series, I think it’s impossible for you not to feel exactly the same way I did. I liked Joaquin when I first read Extreme Exposure, and since then, he’s quickly become one of my favorite male characters.
Joaquin is simply amazing! Gosh, what’s not to love! He’s a good man at heart, nothing less than considerate, caring, tender, patient, giving, loyal, and so loving. His protectiveness had me swooning over him. Hmm…I’m kinda envious of Mia right here.
Well, I will not go into details about the story because I don’t want to spoil any fun and surprise for you. But I can honestly tell you that I enjoyed reading this book immensely. This enthralling plot had me turning the pages nonstop. I loved the characters, and the romance between Joaquin and Mia was full of heat and passion. My only problem with this book was that the suspense was slightly predictable. The killer was a bit guessable for me. But that was minor nevertheless.
All in all, I loved this book. It was a great read full of emotion, passion, and breathtakingly beautiful romance. If you haven't read this series yet, you are certainly missing out on something very special.
5 - "You came into my life and changed everything..." Stars!
You know you re onto a winner, when you start a series at book eight and do not struggle to keep up with the characters or the action taking place. So much so that I almost read Deadly Intent in one sitting.
"What happens after this is over..?"
I fell in love with Pamela Clare’s writing when I started reading her Colorado High Country series, and the I-Team series looks to be the same high standard as that, which just makes me so happy, because I have a wealth of characters to get to know from the beginning now, a number of which I suspect played roles in the telling of Joaquin and Mia’s story.
"I don’t want to rush you… I don’t want to push you into doing something you don’t want to do. But right now, all I want to do is kiss you."
Any author that gives me a Hero who can dance is onto a winner, and add in the dark intensity and protective instincts Joaquin displayed and I would have been a quivering mess if I had been in Mia’s shoes, more because of that than the fact an unhinged former colleague is out to kill me.
One by one, he would get them all…
This book had everything, love, laughter, banter, action, suspense, and stellar simmering sexy-times. I had a feeling after reading the first couple of Colorado High Country books that Ms. Clare and I were going to have a long and happy writer/reader relationship, and with Deadly Intent she has pretty much cemented that commitment from me. I loved this book, I am going to go back and start the series from the beginning now, and immerse myself in all things I-Team. I will happily read anything this author writes now, I know I will be kept entertained, amused and wholly engrossed whatever the genre.
It was as if a missing piece of her life’s puzzle had fallen into place.

After spending 3 years in Publishing Purgatory for defying the Gods of the Publishing World for wanting control over what she writes, Pamela Clare, is finally free to write a Romantic-Suspense novel and "Deadly Intent" is it. The much loved photographer for the I-Team, Joaquin Ramirez, finally gets his own story and I can't wait.
This book is classic Romantic-Suspense at its' best. Pamela Clare is simply one of the best, if not the best, authors writing in this genre. The suspense was good, the romance was hot and it was wonderful to catch up with the previous I-Team characters.
When Former US Army Captain Mia Starr comes into contact with Joaquin, first at a crime scene, then at his cousin's party, she is not sure what to make of this sexy, sensual photojournalist. Her experience has not been good with reporters. She is instantly drawn to him, both because he is off the scales hot, but he also is comfortable with everyone around him, from his elderly grandmother to his youngest cousins. He is young, single, hot and wants more. He wants someone to share his life with.
From the scotching salsa dancing to the love for his friends and family, Joaquin Ramirez is one of my favorites. When the Palace Hotel terrorist attack occurred, he did his best to protect and comfort his friends. He resolved to never again be defenseless and got armed and trained. He hoped never to need that, but he was very glad when circumstances called for him to take action. He becomes Mia's personal bodyguard and protector, and is determined that the person killing soldiers not kill her too.
When evidence from the crime scene shows up where Mia works, Joaquin comes to her defense and it is a very good thing that he has some very good friends who can help Mia. When a solider from her deployment in Iraq turns up dead, it is clear that someone is trying to frame her or may be setting her up as the next target. As her story unfolds of events that happened during her deployment, it becomes clear that there was a cover up and now someone wants Mia dead too.
Joaquin Ramirez is the Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist on the Denver Star’s investigative team (I-Team) who is called to what looks to be a crime scene of a missing veteran. Former Army Captain Mia Starr is also on the scene and soon becomes a suspect after it’s revealed that she was the last person to see the missing soldier and it wasn’t a friendly encounter. Joaquin is immediately intrigued by Mia who isn’t a fan of photojournalists. But, he becomes her champion when it looks like the case is on the wrong track.
I’m so glad to be back with the I-Team and listening to the fabulous Kaleo Griffith tell another of their stories. I became a fan of Joaquin from the earlier story where he was part of a disastrous Mexican trip where a fellow team member was abducted right before his eyes. His professionalism at that time led to his prize-winning work. What I loved about this story is learning much more about the man and his family. His generosity towards Mia further endeared him to me (and Mia!). Also, the sexual harassment of women in the military is explored here and the ugliness of it is on full display. It’s a relevant issue and Mia is the right character to portray what some women in the armed forces endure and how they cope.
It’s an interesting but challenging case as other soldiers are slain. Finding the connection wasn’t initially clear but the suspense certainly was always in the background. There’s an almost perfect balance between the action and romance, which was extremely sensual. And, I love how past characters are woven into this story. It’s only been three months since the Christmas assault and the aftermath is captured here. Mark Hunter and Julian Darcangelo figure prominently in the investigation, too. It’s a really good story narrated expertly by Griffith. Welcome back, I-Team! This is one of my most favorite series and this is on par with the rest.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ This story was a really good example of a well written romantic suspense. It has romance, adventure, mystery/suspense and an HEA. This is a really entertaining series and this book was no exception.
Joaquin Ramirez really impressed me in the last book with his thoughtfulness and bravery. So I was really excited that this hard working and considerate photographer/member of the I-Team would get his chance at love. Mia Starr seemed to be quite prickly in the beginning but I warmed up to her. She had to wear her armor all the time after what’s she had been through as a member of the US armed forces. The now retired officer was a target of an old vendetta and Joaquin decided that he would help protect his sister’s former CO. I like how the author paced this story. Joaquin was clearly attracted to Mia from the beginning but he never pushed and was always considerate of her needs first. He let her dictate how they proceeded. He helped her feel comfortable and confident. I loved it. I enjoyed the narration of Kaleo Griffth except his sexy woman voice, which makes me laugh because it sounds like a man trying to sound like a woman.
I love that the author has kept the same energy, storytelling and emotional appeal throughout this series. Each couple has their own thing, their own journey but lots of support and encouragement from the fellow ITeam members. I can’t say the villain wasn’t predictable but the story was still enjoyable. I am curious to see who will be featured in the next book.
Ok, let's get right to it. This is one of the rare times I've read a book with a cover I didn't like. I'm sure the problems me though. I've never been into bad boys and that man on the cover with his leather jacket and his gun is a bad boy. The description was so engaging I had to read the story.
I have to admit; I am so happy I didn't judge this book by it's cover because the story was amazing. Absolutely amazing! I was hooked from the beginning.
I thought Pamela Clare would be a new-to-me author. So imagine my surprise as I'm getting into the book and Joaquin starts recapping the plot of one of my absolute favorite books ever, Breaking Point. I read that book years ago before I even knew what Goodreads was. I had no idea Pamela Clare not only wrote that book, but this book was part of the same series.
Deadly Intent was wonderful. There was romance and sexual tension and oh-so-much suspense. Twists and turns I couldn't anticipate kept me on my toes and stealing every opportunity I had to read 'just one more page.'
Mia was such a well-developed character. I felt like I was right there with her as she worked through the present mystery. I was also with her in the past as she shared her experiences in Iraq. There are few things I appreciate more in a book than a strong female and Mia was strong and capable. She didn't need a man to save her.
Joaquin is another lovable character. With his big family and ability to capture images showing true emotion and unrecognized beauty, it's so easy to fall in love with him.
Overall, Deadly Intent was a well written engaging read. I recommend it for anyone who likes their romance with a side of murder and suspense.
I recieved a copy of this book from the author/ publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Fans have been waiting ages for Joaquin's book and it was well worth it. He's a great catch!
Joaquin Ramirez is a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer who has been a featured character in Pamela Clare's I-Team series. Always a favorite, he's gone from sweet beta to hunky alpha through the course of the series. We've seen how he gets to where he is now and it's a truly organic process. He hasn't turned suddenly into a special forces operative or anything, but he is toughened and has developed skills to protect himself as well as others.
Mia Starr is a former US Army captain who had a rough time in the service. Sexually harassed and surrounded by corruption, she's disillusioned and bitter. But she has a job she likes a lot and tries to keep in touch with the soldiers who were her subordinates when she was deployed.
Her old unit seems to be getting murdered, however, and Mia's definitely on the kill list. This is where the story begins.
Mia and Joaquin hit it off pretty early on, but in a natural way. She's friends with Joaquin's niece (or cousin? I can't remember) and their paths cross a couple of times. They find something with each other that they haven't experienced before and it's nice to watch them explore it.
There are some action scenes -- a Pamela Clare specialty -- that are pretty great. The romance works well and the plot works out organically for the most part. I knew immediately who the culprit was, but that didn't lessen the enjoyment.
It was nice to see Joaquin finally get his HEA. Mia was perfect for him, and never backed down from a fight. There was drama, action, sexy times, and a bad guy to find and take out. Loved seeing all the previous couples make appearances and help out. The Cousin Mafia was hilarious.
This one was just okay for me. I believe it is a case of my reading taste changing and that it has been 2 years since I last read a book from this series. Which I might add, I loved all the others.
I do enjoy Pamela Clare's writing and will most likely continue to read her stuff but Joaquin Ramirez and Mia Starr's story didn't have the 'wow' factor for me.
Though there were a few scenes of sexy salsa dancing that I loved. ❤ If only I could dance. I'd love to learn to dance the salsa. Although I'd probably kill myself. LOL
I wasn’t sure how Joaquin would fit the role of leading hero when he’s always been the supportive backbone for others. Joaquin isn’t the badass like Darcangelo or Hunter, nor is he the outdoorsy, thrill-seeking type like Gabe; instead our salsa dancing hero is the artist, capturing the passion and heartache of human nature with a click of a button. Have no fear, because he fit the role of protective hero to a T! I could drag a list out, but I’ll just say my favorite was his open honesty with Mia, even when it landed him in hot water at work. It’s just so unusual for a character to simply lay it all out there from the start, but it avoided needless drama and allowed more focus on the developing relationship-win/win as far as I’m concerned!
Mia was a good fit for Joaquin. She had brains, a good eye for detail, and was a little bad ass herself. She also fit into the I-Team group like a long lost friend and I got a kick out of who ended up basically being her bestie! The suspense wasn’t as intense as previous stories, but it worked out because the level suited Mia and Joaquin’s capabilities. Besides, the hard stuff definitely called for appearances by Darcangelo and Hunter;)
As to the romance, I liked the development even if it happened quickly. It was also sexier than I expected, but still fell in the realm of sweet. For example, when I think of Zach or Darcangelo’s stories, they bring raw sexuality to mind..or maybe that’s because of the adrenaline rush, lol.. Joaquin reminded me of Reese. They both have the kind of subdued sexiness that tends to catch people by surprise when something happens, and Joaquin... he caught me by surprise.
The I-Team series has been a longtime favorite and when I saw Joaquin’s name in the blurb, I clicked it without finishing the summary. I had no clue what the story was about and discovered I didn’t care! I simply knew Joaquin would finally get his story and I would catch glimpses of favorite characters. Overall, I was happy with the end result and will keep my figures crossed for future stories, long or short!
Binge reading done! I love this series so much because of the characters. Like KA's Rock Chick series, I want to be friends with the I-Team women and their military men (plus Joaquin and Mia of course). You know what, I think I'm just going to move to Denver, Colorado. LOL!
" I feel a connection to you, Mia. I can't explain it. I just know it's there."
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Joaquin Ramirez, the latest hero in the wonderful romantic suspense series I-Team. I tend to begin my reviews talking about the plot but this time, I think the hero deserve to be first. Because every woman (and why not men too :p) needs a Joaquin Ramirez in her life. Because a man who listen to what you think and feel and make you feel good about yourself is a man of worth. That he's a good dancer is only a plus ;p
Meeting at a crime scene is not usually the way people find love. But for Joaquin Ramirez, a photojournalist and Mia Starr, a former captain in the Army, it's how it began. After a brief conversation where she expressed what she think of the media, neither expected to see each other again, and so soon, but going to see a mutual acquaintance will give them a second chance to a fresh start.
Her past experiences with men left Mia with a lack of confidence when it comes to her feminity. She couldn't find a better companion than Joaquin to help her with that. He's searching for a serious relationship and he was so honest. I like that there was no game, no bullshit between him and Mia and they didn't try to hide their attraction. It was still sexy anyway.
I agree with my sister who said it was easy to guess who the bad guy was but I read it more for the romance than the suspense so that's not something that bother me.
What I especially appreciate in Pamela Clare's work is the large variety of different cultures and ethnicity she show in her books and she do it in every genre she write so je vous félicite chère auteure :)
I cannot finish this review without talking about the presence of beloved characters from the series. I may have felt for Joaquin but Darcangelo, you're still my man :p I like the fact that Marc and Julian was there but didn't stole the show. A reread of this serie is on my soon-to list.
Joaquin has always been behind the sense, snapping pictures for the front page, exposing emotions for the world to read. He never thought being on the public side on police tape would lead him on a chase for his life. Joaquins’ ability to see more than what meets the eye has him yearning to know more about Mia and her confidential past.
Mia knew when she joined the military her life could be lost at any moment; she never planned on it being I jeopardy after receiving her discharge. Helping her former soldiers return to civilian life and cope with lasting injuries will be her downfall, she never dreamed of opening fire on another soldier.
Ms. Clare captures the readers’ attention from the start and will hold it long after the last page. The plot is weaved so readers keep turning pages no matter what time of the night it is, they have to know what happens next. Mia and Joaquin start off with an intense dislike for each other that quickly turns into a love affair; they make much better lovers than enemies. Many of the previous I-Team couples make appearance throughout the novel adding depth to the novel. If readers are looking for a suspenseful romantic novel, Deadly Intent would be great recommendation. Ms. Clares writing is exceptional, always filled with strong characters, great plots, intense emotions and satisfying endings.
I hadn't read anything from this series in a really long time. I don't know why I forgot about this one but I'm glad I came back to it. I really enjoy the whole mystery plot in conjunction with the love story. It's nice to see their feeling develop over the length of the drama/suspense scenes.
It's so great to have a new romantic suspense book from Pamela Clare. I've missed her romantic suspense books. She is the queen of RS after all.
We finally get Joaquin's story and it wasn't a disappointment. I loved visiting with all of our old I-Team friends. This was a fast paced story and a good read. You'll laugh, cry and smile.
‘Deadly Intent’ is a reminder of how much I’ve missed Pamela Clare’s I-Team series, or rather the kind of romantic suspense that I’ve always associated Clare with, given the sharp ring of authenticity that comes from the author’s own journalistic background.
A bit of a confession here: it did take me a while to warm up to the idea of Joaquin Ramirez having his own story—I’d frankly forgotten about him after Zach/Natalie’s book—but Clare has a way of shaping him into a romantic hero that I championed wholly by the first quarter of the story.
And how far he’d come since then.
As a photojournalist, Joaquin broke some moulds which won me over quickly: instead of the gun-toting alpha male with bulging muscles who was ex-military (nor did he occupy expensive real estate in a security company while running around jaded and cynical), we got red-hot salsa moves and an impressive amount of heart he had for people around him. For that alone, I was sold on this very compelling protagonist whom I knew needed someone special to see him for who he was.
For all the heroines I’d ever imagined for Joaquin, I never expected the idea of a former military Captain as his other half but had no problem falling straight into this pairing hook, line and sinker once their relationship progressed beyond their rocky start. Much of their story was riveting enough—from their first dance that had me fanning myself to the seamless buildup and their crackling chemistry—that I got through ‘Deadly Intent’ in a matter of hours, then itched immediately to go back and re-read it.
The writing style is a little different here but ‘Deadly Intent’ is an excellent example of a more straight-forward RS read, not quite carrying the same complexity or unpredictability (plot-wise) as a few of Clare’s other I-team books, yet still well-paced with multifaceted protagonists whom I knew I could cheer for. It also bears the hallmarks of Clare’s collaborative efforts with another RS writer Kaylea Cross (another author whom I follow) and consequently, has a different feel to it, carrying a mesh of styles and subject-matter, along with the darker overtones of sexual assault and harassment of women in the military resonating deeply in the wake of the #MeToo hashtag dominating the media of late.
All things considered, I thought this was still a fabulous read. Revisiting the I-Team simply reminded me how much I liked Marc/Julian’s bromance and while catching up with Clare’s other couples was a hoot, I’m hoping that even with Joaquin/Mia’s iron-clad HEA, Clare has more in the works to come.
I love Pamela Clare's I-Team series. Eight novels and, I believe, four novellas. I am so glad that she has written another full-length novel in this series.
This book proves Ms. Clare has not lost her touch. Not only do we meet a new person but we get a HEA for one of the original team. Joaquin and Mia's story will keep you glued until the final page. We get to meet characters from all the previous books which means we are brought up to speed on their lives as well.
As always, Pamela Clare's writing is superb. I thoroughly recommend this book but, please, read the rest of the serious first or you will get major spoilers in this book for all the other stories.
The eighth book in the I-Team series by Pamela Clare. Joaquin Ramirez, photojournalist for the I-Team, arrives on the scene of a suspicious disappearance. There he encounters Mia Starr, a former army Captain, that was once the XO of the person missing. Mia is considered a person of interest when it is discovered she was the last one to see that person.
Another excellent addition to the series. I must say that if I could only have one series of books to read on the deserted island, the I-Team series would be in the running.
At long last, Pamela Clare has brought back the I-Team! Reading this one reminded me how much I love the series and frankly I feel the need to go back and reread the series just because it is that good. As much as I loved this series, this book can definitely be read on its own but with all of the hints at past stories concerning the other characters it is sure to have the reader wanting more I-Team. A perfect balance of romance and suspense, this book is one that will have you staying up past your bedtime! I certainly hope we can expect more from this series since the book ended with a new member on the I-Team.
I am so deeply invested in the I-Team. When I heard Joaquin would be getting his own book I was elated. Our loving photojournalist deserved a HEA, and he finally got one *wipes happy tears*.
Most of the books in this series can be read as a standalone but WARNING for spoilers from book 7 and DBM in this one! You should just start from the beginning because friendship dynamics grow so much, you'll love it. I promise. Plus storytelling is always A+++ superb and often touch on important topics.
This is a wonderfully crafted romantic suspense that had me sitting on the edge of my seat throughout. I love it when I am totally captivated by a book right from the beginning to the very last page. I absolutely loved this story! If you enjoy a good suspense that has you glued then this is the book for you. Pamela Clare spins romance with such skill and finesse that it is difficult to put this one down until the end. Joaquin and Mia totally stole my heart and the storyline is full of intrigue, humor and romance. I highly recommend this one, it is worth more than five stars!
Thanks to her great talent, once again, Pamela Clare managed to turn a minor character from the previous novels into an incredible hero. And Mia is a perfect match for Joaquin, who turns out to be so, so sensual. I was totally engrossed in the plot too and outraged by the –alas too real– treatment of women in the professional world. What a pleasure to meet all the previous I-Team heroes and heroines again! It was like meeting old friends. We can clearly feel that Pamela Clare likes her heroes and heroines a lot.
