❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 An adventure that’s addictive and one that you’ll find difficult to stop reading , no matter the time .
This has been a great series and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are wonderful and you feel that you really get to know them and feel their emotions and trepidation’s.
I look forward to reading more from this author x
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
DNF’d after chapter 12 of 26. Listened to the audiobook available in Audible Plus Catalogue. I want more romance. No kiss scenes yet except the one mentioned in the blurb. There are a few chapters in the antagonist’s POV.
Caroline Nash vows to never again get involved with a man after being jilted by her fiancé George. Especially not the Earl of Tisdale whom her father has chosen for her. The man is a pompous ass and one of Prinny’s set who only wants her for her dowry. To complicate matters, a kiss from the Midnight Marauder unleashes an unbelievable passion that Caroline can’t seem to forget. Stephan Stoddard, the Marquis of Kendrick, poses as the robbing marauder to avenge his low-born mother, to thumb his nose at the aristocracy & to help his tenants with the proceeds To be properly introduced to the woman of his dreams, he attends the Prince Regent’s house party. He finds her, begging Brice to pretend to court her, Stephan couldn’t wish for a better opportunity – he’ll happily court her, but he doesn’t want to pretend. A well written page turning novel with, pirating, highwaymen, a yacht race & of course romance. Stephan has always been attracted to Caroline but after stealing a kiss he’s totally smitten. Caroline is likewise smitten but with the Midnight Marauder however the more she comes to know Stephan the lines between the Marquis & his alter ego are blurred. The characters have depth & on the whole are likeable, I thoroughly disliked Tisdale. I thoroughly enjoyed the book but was left wanting more as whilst one villain was arrested there are still more at large, I hope everything will be resolved in the final book of the trilogy. I also found the ending to be rushed, the lead up had been very good then in a couple of pages it was over & done with My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Like the first book I read of this series this book started off as a very exciting, quick read but somewhere near the half way point it bogged down.. I did finish it but it just wasn't quite the remarkable read I first thought it would be. It was however better than the previous title, A Rake's Redemption, from this series that I had read.. I gave this book 4.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization. The hero is a remarkable individual with really good traits that endeared him to me. Caroline is a likeable heroine in spite of the interference of a selfish father, an abhorrent earl, and the machinations of the prince making this a very frustrating read at times. I received a complimentary ARC of this title to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
A Rake's Revenge by Cynthia Breeding is book Two in the Rake Trilogy Series. This is the story of Stephan, the Marquis of Kendrick and Caroline Nash. I have read (and Loved) the previous book, but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Stephan is out to avenge his mother's death and has taken to pretending to be the bandit Midnight Marauder. On one of his escapades he meets the fiery Ms. Nash. Caroline had a narrow miss on getting married but her father is working to set her up with a older man that she does not wish to be with. Stephan has a new mission to get to know Caroline more. Stephan gets invited to the Prince Regent’s house party where he overhears Caroline trying to talk someone into being in a pretend relationship with her. Of course Stephan steps forward to offer his services but he doesn't want to pretend anything. Loved Ms. Breeding writing and this book.
it started off great, with Stephan stealing a kiss from Caroline but it went downhill during the party when Caroline was pushed here and there by Tisdale and her father. I liked her because she showed some strong parts and determination - asking Brice to act as her betrothed to stop Tisdale's advances. When it came down to Stephan taking that role as her 'betrothed', she became useless. She doesn't give much effort and allowed herself to be pushed around which I didn't like. I feel that her continuing to just stay away from Tisdale was not enough, it was as if she wasn't determined enough to not become his wife. If she was, she would have definitely done more. I expected more from her, as I really liked her in A Rake's Redemption.
I was so tired of seeing Tisdale and Caroline's father pushing her around and trying their luck. I kept wishing for Tisdale to disappear or die and the father to just mind his own business. Too much drama happening.
Stephan is...I don't know. I liked him in A Rake's Redemption but in A Rake's Revenge, he is kinda toned down. Aside from him kissing ladies he rob, I don't see him doing many things that make him a rake. So he doesn't live up to my expectation as a rake. Brice is a different thing altogether. He does live up to my expectation as a rake, as it's mentioned he sleeps with almost every woman. I did like seeing Brice dumbfounded by Sarah and am really interested in reading about them.
As for the actual romance between Caroline and Stephan, it was non-existent, except for the lust they experienced in that kiss that night. They barely spent any time together and even if they did, they continued being interrupted by Tisdale and the father, that they couldn't get to know each other properly / bond properly which leads me to my next problem, their romance. If they can't have time alone to bond, I cannot understand where their romance came from. Therefore, I find it hard to believe in their love.
On a side note, it was good to see Amelia and George behave like actual people who are nice despite what they did in A Rake's Redemption, defending Caroline for being treated as a prize, an object in a competition.
I skimmed the part with sailing and inspection of the boats as I just wasn't interested. The ending was super rushed which just doesn't sit well with me.
I will read Brice's book: A Rake's Rebellion, because I don't feel good stopping after reading 2 books in a series and just want to complete it to make myself feel better. And also because I like Brice. But as much as I like Brice and Sarah, I will not have high expectations for A Rake's Rebellion as I have been disappointed twice in A Rake's Redemption and A Rake's Revenge.

Loved Caroline and Stephan's story. Hated the spelling and possible pronunciation of Stephan's name. What Englishman of the Regency period, short of having a French mother, has the name Stephan? The author should have just spelled the name Stephen. Every time I saw his name - which was a lot, as he was a main character - over-perfumed 1990's Eurotrash dudes came to mind. Okay, now that I got that off of my chest...'A Rakes's Revenge' was a great story, with a few tangents that came together in a satisfying way. Recalling Caroline from the first book of the series, she was even more likeable here. And Stephen (I refuse to call him Stephan from here on), was one sexy, tall, dark, and handsome sweetheart. The fact that the hot sexytimes didn't happen until the last quarter of the book was a thumbs up for me, as I like characters to have meaningful interactions before going at it like rabbits. I'm looking forward to Brice and Vanessa's story!
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5 Stars) Title: A Rake's Revenge Author(s): Cynthia Breeding Character(s): ― Caroline Nash: 24 years old, Brunette, Gray Eyed ― Stephan Stoddard: 28 years old, Black, Black Eyed Setting: Brighton, England Tag(s): Romance, Historical Content Rating: R POV: Third Person Smexy Level: Hot Favorite Quote(s): ― “If I were to take you, you would be mine. I would let no other man have you.” Overall Opinion: What's hard not to like about a historical romance? There were a lot of positive things to say about the read which ranges from the author's writing style, fierce leads characters and well executed end. The secondary characters Tisdale, Ann and the lead heroine father were a little hard to take in at times but their unlikeness help make the story. “A Rake's Revenge” was an overall enjoyable read that I would recommend anyone looking for a good decent historical romance novel to pass the time with.
Now I want to go sailing...with Stephan:) This was a wonderful book to read and I loved all the characters....except for the detestable earl that Caroline's father betrothed her to!
Stephan, the Marquis of Kendrick, is the Midnight Marauder, as well as a pirate, but it's all for a good reason! Caroline Nash is being forced by her father to marry an abhorrent earl, no matter how many times she says NO. Invited to the Prince Regent's 3 week house party, it's a good thing Stephan comes to her rescue!! It was quite humorous to watch her two suitors try to outdo each other. I also enjoyed the Regatta sailing race and learning more about sailing!
I was given a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I dont think that I have ever read from this author and I am glad that I did, I enjoyed this book and I intend on the reading the first book. We have Caroline who was jilted by an ex and she swore should would not get involved with another man, especially not the old man that her father has picked for her, he was horrid. She ends up getting kissed by the Midnight Maurader who has woken up a passion she didn't know she had. This maurader is Stephan the Marquis of Kendrick and after that kiss he intends on finding her and when he does everything changes..Grab a copy and Enjoy!

Caroline Nash was determined to stay away from men, but if her father had his wish she will marry the dispicable older earl he has chosen for her. As often the case he only wants her dowry. Desperate she begins to beg a friend to pretend to be interested in her. But as Stephan, the Marquess of Kendrick overhears, he steps in to take the role which will hopefully turn real! A wonderful story of hidden secrets that could come to life and ruin Stephen's chance and of love when least expected. Truly enjoyed this story so much and would highly recommend!
This book was everything a historical romance should be! The banter between Caroline and Stephen was extremely well written and funny at times, but the whole book together? Definitely a must read. It was accurate and flowed perfectly for the time period. Well worth the time to read.
A Rake' Revenge was my first book by Cynthia Breeding and I really liked it. I loved Caroline and Stephan, although I would have loved more interaction between the two in the beginning. But overall a great story I really liked.
This is the 2nd book that I have read from this author. This book follows the story of Carolyn and Stephen. It is a companion novel to A Rakes Redemption but both books are stand alone novels.
Carolyn is a knights daughter. Her father wants her to marry for a title and he has set her up with one of his friends. Carolyn is disgusted and does not want to marry the old Earl.
Stephen has decided that he likes Carolyn and he also doesn’t like the old Earl.
Thru twists and turns, boat races and trying to please a parent you love Carolyn and Stephen have to find a way to make this relationship happen.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were meant for each other and were matched. The rival Earl was despicable, and earned his just rewards. Daughter Ann I hope does well with the Duke and his wife. I am happy to see the couple have some good qualities after all. I must say I was very happy, and recommend this book highly. Thank you, Jack.
This was a wonderful storyline. Easy to read and easy to get lost in the story. I read this in two evenings and hated when I finished it. It would have been awesome to have lasted three or four more evenings.
bridgerton meets pirates meets robin hood?? idk but i liked it, easy and nice story flow. stephen sounds dark, dangerous and sexy love that for caroline. not a whole lot of spicy action in this but mostly just pinning and honestly miscommunication but we love it. 3.5 ⭐️
Since her almost-betrothed threw her over for another, Miss Caroline Nash has sworn off men and marriage. But her father has other ideas and wants to have a titled grandson, so he promises Caroline to the aging and pompous Earl of Tisdale who only wants her for her dowry, but has the Prince Regent's support due to his position within the prince's inner circle. To make matters worse, an encounter with the mysterious highwayman, the Midnight Marauder, awakens an unexpected passion in Caroline that proves impossible for her to forget.
Stephan, the Marquess of Kendrick, uses his nighttime activities as the Marauder to get back at the ton for their poor treatment of his lowborn mother and their ready willingness to blame him for his older brother's tragic death. He's shocked when a steamy kiss with Caroline Nash leaves him wanting more for the first time ever.
Stephan attends the Prince Regent's regatta and house party to renew his acquaintance with Caroline and winds up agreeing to pretend to court her in an attempt to fend off the unwanted suitor her father has chosen. Stephan is thrilled at the opportunity, but his intentions are genuine, not pretended. However, with his nefarious activities drawing more attention, especially from the vindictive and desperate earl, who has the prince's ear, Stephan's secrets may land him in hot water before he can uncover a traitor to England and dash his hopes at love as well.
Between Caroline's selfish father and the abhorrent earl, not to mention the machinations of the prince, this was a very frustrating read. I know this was indicative of the time, but her father's callous treatment of her and total disregard for her wants or safety was appalling. Also, as per usual, our main characters didn't do themselves any favors by failing to communicate with each other.
Despite the annoyances of this one in some places, there was good tension throughout that made me want to stick with it and overall I enjoyed if, even if the ending was perhaps a bit too rushed to be wholly satisfying.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
***ARC was provided to me by Net Galley and the Publisher for a fair and honest review***
Overall rating: 3.5/5 Either accept you don’t know boating terminology or google it
Heroine (Caroline Nash): 3/5 The daughter of a knight who has been jilted in the past. She believes she would be happy not marrying at all.
Hero (Stephan, Marquis of Kendrick): 3.5/5 By trade he is a Marquis with a serious interest in sailing. By night he is the Midnight Marauder, a highway man who steals coins from rich men and kisses from the women they are with. He has dark hair, dark eyes, and a dark mask that keep people guessing who he is.
Plot: 3.5/5 Caroline’s father decides she is to marry the slimy, as old as her father, Lord Trisdale who only wants her dowry to pay his debts. She is ‘accosted’ by the Midnight Marauder on the way home who steals a kiss from her. Stephan decides this is the girl from him and finds his way to the house party she and Trisdale are attending. Posing it as a favor he throws down a gauntlet and openly courts Caroline. In order to win her hand he must win the sailing race against Trisdale. But more importantly will Stephan win the race to Caroline’s heart?
Personal Review: I love the first scene with Caroline and her Midnight Marauder, I kind of wish she finds him when she goes looking for him again (Stephan knows she’s looking and could have made it happen).
After such a intimate scene, Caroline doesn’t really get to spend too much time talking to Stephan freely. There were outside forces keeping them apart during the day but actions from Stephan and from Lady Ann suggest that if you want to sneak into rooms other than your own, then you can. I just wanted more time with them actually together in order for Caroline to fall in love Stephan.
Both make some interesting choices in regards to communicating plans; they don’t communicate at all. Stephan sends Brice with a coded message that Caroline misunderstands. They both make choices for how to act in public but don’t actually tell the other and end up hurting feelings unnecessarily.
This is another new author to me and I am excited to see what/ who else she has in store for us! This book has everything fun; an independent leading lady, pirates, a masked bandit who steals as many kisses as riches, an estranged Marquis, an unwanted betrothal, and a crazy scheme to get out of it. This book was a total run read and I loved every minute of it from page 1 to the last period. I really hope to read many more stories from this author in the near future. Caroline Nash is completely resigned to living life “on the shelf” especially after being jilted by her ex- betrothed, that is until her father calls in a favor of the Prince Regent and she finds herself almost betrothed to the Earl of Tisdale a man much her senior. In a desperate attempt to thwart her betrothed, her father and her Prince’s plans for her she finds herself begging a favor from a friend of a friend. Will the favor work to her benefit or will she lose everything in her marriage to the dastardly Earl of Tisdale? Stephan Stoddard, Marquis of Kendrick, is quite content with his life as a pirate and the Midnight Marauder, taking from the snobs of the ton and giving to the poor. So what’s to stop him from having a little fun with the debutants of London, by stealing their kisses, while he’s at it? An eventful run in and the attempt to save Caroline Nash from a doomed marriage might just change his life as he knows it.
To be honest, I am a bit confused about the title of this one. While yes, Stephan does challenge another man for Caroline's hand, and yes, he does things to thumb his nose at society and traitors, we never really get a clear idea of who he is supposedly seeking revenge against.
Aside from that, it was a decent read. It didn't keep me glued to the pages by any means (aka I was able to put it down and come back to it later), and I found the characters either lacking or entirely too over the top. Also, the romance was not my favorite among the stories I've read recently (honestly, they had ample time to develop their relationship outside of the started as a charade mentality, but never seemed to until they decided they were in love with each other).
I did however LOVE the idea of a Midnight Marauder as well as a sort of Robin Hood pirate, stealing from those who were funding France, and dividing the goods up among the lower classes.
All things considered, I do believe this novel will still appeal to those who enjoy historical romance novels, and I would read more from this author.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
This is a great historical romance and I really enjoyed this story. Caroline Nash has no plans of ever getting married. Let's just say that after having her heart broken and subsequent scandal, she is over men. They are not to be trusted. She is finally getting accustomed to her new situation as an independent spinster when her father announces that she is engaged, to be married to someone she despises. Now she must find a way out of this impending disaster because there is no way in hell she'd let her father dictate her life like that. That's how Stephan enters the picture. He was to help her thwart the attention of Lord Tisdale. Stephan is intrigued by Caroline. She is a strong and stubborn woman with opinions of her own. He also finds her very attractive but his life has other purposes and he can't afford to be distracted by a woman. Unfortunately, things have a tendency of going in the opposite direction to what you where you want them to go. Soon he realizes that he is genuinely interested in Miss Nash and there is no way he'd ever let her marry another man. It is a lighthearted and exciting story, I really liked the way it's written. I think it's a must read for all historical romance fans. P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley.
This was an ok read, a regency romance with a maritime setting, with a independent heroine, Caroline Nash who has been unlucky in love, and has been gossiped about since she was jilted by a Duke. She is held up by a highwayman called the Masked Maurader, who steals a kiss in lieu of valuables. Unknown to her this is Stephan Marquis of Kendrick, Who becomes fascinated with Caroline and the chemistry between them. Caroline is promised in marriage to a pompous older man by her father, against her will. ‘Tisdale is, unbeknownst to her, desperate for her dowry and also involved in some shady dealings with smugglers. Stephan agrees to court Caroline as well, to put Tisdale off, and he discovers that he is up to something shady. Will Stephan be able to expose him, and will Caroline realise that he is really courting her.
The book felt a little laboured at the beginning and I struggled to get into it, there was a little too much will they, won’t they between Caroline and Stephan, and Caroline as a character felt very indecisive and almost passive initially.. it did pick up about halfway through and got a bit more gripping, once Stephan and Caroline got closer together.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Caroline Nash has no interest in marrying the man her father has chosen for her. He is nearly twice her age and disgusting. Unfortunately, she has no choice but to court him due to the fact that Prinny gave his permission for the match. Caroline soon finds an alternative to her problem, she must find another suitor and quickly.
Stephan, the Marquis of Kendrick, is happy to pose as Caroline's suitor. He has been intrigued with Caroline ever since he met her under his guise of the "Midnight Marauder," a highwaymen who steals from the rich. Stephan wants to win Caroline for himself. But, will Caroline want more?!
Author Cynthia Breeding is newer-to-me, but is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Her characters are larger than life and just feel so relatable, especially in her latest novel, A RAKE'S REVENGE. I loved the main characters, Caroline and Stephan. They are absolutely perfect for one another. It takes Caroline a little bit to come to terms with Stephan's secrets, but it is all worth it in the end. I can't wait to read more about Brice and a few other side characters. I give A RAKE'S REVENGE 4 stars!
After reading the first book, I was excited to read Caroline's story. I absolutely adored this. Caroline was such a strong woman in the first one and continued as such here. For her, she needed the perfect foil and she got one in Stephen. Stephen wears many hats. First he is the Marquess of Kendrick, a pirate and also the Midnight Marauder. The journey to their HEA is really filled with conflict in the name of the Earl of Tisdale.
I was glued to my e-reader to see how the author was going to attempt to work all of the threads here together into a cohesive plot. I was totally enchanted with the plot and all the happenings. I really loved the multiple person POV that we were given. It really helped to get a more thorough understanding as to what was happening. The author also had a way of writing the story that really made it seem like I was right there in the middle of everything.
I so look forward to the third story (I have a feeling is Brice's along with the American orphan Miss Sarah Vincent.) There is a scene that is sexual in nature but I wouldn't classify it as erotica. It was more of moving the relationship forward and in a semi-modest detailing.
This novel brings together a woman who has no desire to marry and a man hiding secrets. Caroline Nash has hurt by a man who claimed he would propose and never did. Instead he married someone else. Caroline desires passion and when the Midnight Marauder does that, Caroline desires him. However, her father, with Prinny's approval, has selected a husband for her, though she has reached her majority. Stephan, the Marquis of Kendrick, is a pirate, among other things. He does not conform to society after how his mother was treated and he was blamed for his half-brother's death. Stephan is immediately intrigued by Caroline and agrees to help deter the earl's attentions. Stephan is more than he seems and has no intention of telling Caroline his secrets. He feels that she desires his alter ego, but she does not know he is planning to win her hand. As the house party continues, there is the gossip and sabotage amok, making things difficult for Caroline and Stephan. When truths are revealed, where will each stand?
Caroline Nash has decided that after her soon-to-be betrothed rejected her for another, that she will avoid marriage. However, her father has other plans for her, forcing an engagement upon her to Lord Tisdale. In amongst all this, she is kissed by the Midnight Marauder and begins to wonder more about romance. Little does she know that Stephan, the Marquis of Kendrick, is the marauder, who steals from the rich to give to others. This romance happened slowly and burst into flames at the end. Both characters were well developed yet I did find that they spent too much time apart. Whilst a great start to the book, their time apart did take away from the romance, yet at the same time, attention was given to the feud between Tisdale and Stephan, and the possibility of being uncovered by the Crown. I received an advanced review copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This novel started out sensationally erotica and daring. Caroline is accosted by a masked robber who steals an earth shattering kiss only to disappear again. She's then forced into an engagement by her father to a man she can't stand. Stephen arrives and pretends to court her in order to save her from marrying the man. Little does she know that he has feelings for her. I thought there would be more sensual scenes as their interactions grow more intimate with this ruse. But the author chooses to make us wait until about 80% before she randomly throws herself at him after ignoring him and declares her love. The ending was super rushed and unclimatic.
