Anna Dupont has inherited Hotel Flamingo, the sunniest hotel in town, from her Great Aunt Mathilda who left it to her in her will. Upon arrival Anna is disappointed to see that the place is grey and peeling, the windows are cracks and that there are cobwebs and dust everywhere. There are also only two employees and there have been no guests for the last three years.
Anna sets about cleaning the hotel up and hires lots of staff including a maid who is allergic to dust and a rude, but very talented chef who wants to do everything his way. She also hires a handy-giraffe to fix the pool and other maintenance jobs.
Her first paying customers are a family of cockroaches that no other hotel will allow to stay as they are insects. Soon though the owner of the local hotel that put them out of business three years ago with his glitzy, huge hotel, wants to see for himself what is happening and he isn’t pleased. There’s also a hotel inspector whose come to take a look. If he decides the place isn’t good enough he can shut the Hotel Flamingo down again. Can Anna and the staff make the place presentable and keep all the new guests happy?
Hotel Flamingo is the first in a new children’s series from author Alex Milway. I’ve loved Alex’s books in the past so I couldn’t wait to start on this one.
The first thing that hits you as you open the title page is how beautifully illustrated the inside is. The vibrant colours are inviting and the images bring the story to life.
The hotel is situated on Animal Boulevard and is a grand hotel with fifty rooms over five floors and includes a restaurant, penthouse suite, pool, and a spa. The staff, with the exception of Anna, are all different animals and they all enjoy their jobs, especially Mr. T Bear and Lemmy the Ringtailed Lemur who have never left the place and are now happy to have the hotel back up and running.
The story is very imaginative and enjoyable and I can see this book being a big hit with the kids. It shows with hard work just what can be achieved if you all pull together.
Welcome to Hotel Flamingo, enjoy your stay because this hotel is going to be fabulous!
I was delighted when I saw this book on Twitter, I just love books about hotels, and this one seemed even more fun as this one was about a hotel not doing too well and a little girl going to make it all fabulous again. Oh, and don't forget this hotel is at the coast and the guests and workers are animals!
Meet Anna, she has just inherited a wonderful hotel named Hotel Flamingo... well one day it was a beautiful hotel, but now it is pretty dilapidated and she has a lot of work to do. I loved how she immediately set to work, not daunted by the amount of work or the state of the hotel. Nope, this girl is brimming with ideas, and she is not afraid to get dirty or tell people what to do. I loved what kind of plans this girl had, she had so many of them. For instance calling the flamingo theatre group to help out, or when she finds unexpected visitors in the pool she handles that in a way that benefits everyone. Plus, I also love how inclusive she is. No matter what kind of guest pops in she lets them in, and it made me delighted.
It was great fun seeing the hotel flourish and prosper. To see it go back to how it used to be (though it still has tons of work before it is totally fabulous again).
I was surprised at the colour our girl picked for the outside walls, I would have picked a whole different colour!
Who the cat was? I knew instantly what he was doing and who he was.
The cover is just the most adorable thing, and I also loved the illustrations inside of the book.
Oh, you can also search for a snail, but I am sorry, I totally forgot about that little dude until the end when he popped up to ask if we found him. :P
I do have a few questions, there are humans around (we see pictures, and Anna is a human), but where are they? Is this island/spot mostly/only for animals?
All in all, I need more books about Hotel Flamingo. And I so would love to visit! What kind of things will Anna do next? What kind of animals will we meet? Will the cook be nicer? What about the guy who runs the rival hotel, what will he do?
The first book in a fun middle-grade series which takes place in a rundown hotel in serious need of love and fresh paint. Anna inherits the hotel from her now-deceased great aunt and is horrified by its condition. With each chapter, she sets about transforming everything from the ground up. New animal staff, old attractions repaired and advertising by competing with a rival hotel who isn't pleased to see Hotel Flamingo back in business. Both a fun listen and read!
This was cute. It's a fun premise (a hotel staffed by, and catering to, animals!) and our (human girl) heroine is spunky and resourceful. Some of the side stories are subtle yet important. Love that the Hotel Flamingo wants to welcome everyone (which sets it apart from its glitzy competitor) even a family of cockroaches. Appreciate that the cockroaches are not only courteous but helpful and that their presence helps reshape others' ideas of what (who) is acceptable. Somehow, the whole thing didn't quite sparkle as much as I'd hoped it would... the characters weren't quite as well realized as some other animal casts I've encountered in children's chapter books... but I still very much enjoyed it (the flamingo entertainment troupe especially amused me) and both my kids enjoyed it so I'm rounding up to four stars. Will be checking out others in the series. It's a good choice for young ones just getting interested in chapter book (my five-year-old enjoyed it for read-aloud) and there's nothing too distressing but it's not fluff.
* I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher
First of all, I have to say that the cover of this book is absolutely stunning and myself and the kids found ourselves looking at it over and over again. And I'm delighted to say that the story inside is just as beautiful!
When Anna arrives at the grand hotel that she has inherited, it isn't long before she realises that it isn't really all that grand anymore. But there is something extra special about this place and Anna is determined to make it shine again. With the help of her staff, the wonderful animals that make the hotel feel like home, they will work hard together to make their dreams come true.
The characters were a huge hit with us and we had a soft spot for so many of the cute and crazy animals that showed their quirky and strong personalities at every opportunity. There was plenty of laughs along the way and the illustrations throughout really worked well for my younger child who still enjoys pictures in books. I loved the fact that the jobs didn't split up into the typical boy/girl divide and that Anna was such a strong and determined character who helped pull everyone together to succeed.
We all really enjoyed HOTEL FLAMINGO by Alex Milway and there was nothing about this book that we did not love - a complete success in our house!!
It's such a nice story! It was the first 'big book' my daughter read herself and we enjoyed every page. Apart from the simple but funny and cheerful story we loved the illustrations (monochromatic pink) and gorgoues, gilded cover. It is also divided in chapters, around 10 pages long, so it's perfect for younger reader. Overall, a great book and we are looking forward to the book no. 2!
Read- May 2020 for Medieval-A-Thon (Read a book under 300 Pages) - I've had a very stressful weekend and I haven't actually read anything during the weekend so I decided to pick this up as a quick read and I really enjoyed it. It was such a cute, fun book and I'm hoping to also read the second one tonight.
No joo, lastenkirja helppoa luettavaa etsivälle.
a very sweet story that i narrated the story to my 3.5 years old daughter. it kept her interest throughout my whole narration, it made her feel happiness, agony, empathy, relief. I suggest it 100%.
This was a cute early chapter book I read aloud to my almost six-year-old. The main character, Anna, has inherited a hotel on Animal Boulevard that needs revamping. The guests and staff are all animals with their own characteristics and needs. The story emphasizes hard work, acceptance, and inclusion as Anna aims to bring the hotel back to life as "the sunniest hotel in town."
I just think I love how the setting is a hotel. And I also love that they’re all animals and there’s one girl. The hotel is so nice because I love that all the animals are trying to help her. I also think the funniest character is probably the pig. So I ❤️ this book. I would tell a friend to read it.
This was a really cute book about a girl who inherits an old run down hotel and decides to get it up and running again, with the help of some animal friends! Looking forward to reading the other 3 books in the series!
My daughter Karlee and I really enjoyed reading this book together. The characters had so much personality and enthusiasm to put work into rebuilding the reputation of this hotel. She said it's a 5 star read. We can't wait to continue on with the series.
A young girl inherits a decrepit hotel. Not quite in the same vein as Schitt's Creek, but there's a thread of positivity, hard work, and can-do attitude that runs through this that gives me similar happy feelings.
I love this book! It is so adventurous! I like the part when the flamingos did a beautiful dance on stage. My favourite character in this book is Miss Fraganti! I feel very happy when I read this storybook. This book is amazing!😍
