Lord Christian Wolverton―known as Wolf in a covert group operating during the war against Napoleon―has been called home from his military duties. For the moment, his family responsibilities require him to suspend his more clandestine activities. But information falls into his hands that a traitor will soon try to tip the scales back into French favor and Christian must stop it from happening.
Going to the one person who can help him, the powerful Duke of Huntingdon, Christian comes face to face with Lady Alice. She’s a beautiful member of the ton with a very big secret―she’s also a trained agent and already on the case. Forced to partner with her to lure the traitor out of hiding, Christian wants to quickly finish the mission himself, before Lady Alice is more closely involved. But Lady Alice has ideas of her own and she’s going to prove her theories correct―with or without him.
Danger is closer than they think, however, and it’s a race against time to expose the traitor’s identity before British lives are endangered. Both Christian and Alice have strong opinions on who he is, but which one will be proven right and can they catch him in time?
After reading every Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and Hardy Boys book her elementary school library had, Julie Coulter Bellon knew from a young age she wanted to write books and be a published author someday. That dream came true and she is now the author of thirty romantic suspense novels and two children's books. One nightmare that also came true was that she once tripped up the stairs going on stage to accept a book award and she thinks about that moment more often than she should.
Julie loves to travel and her favorite cities she's visited so far are probably Athens, Paris, Ottawa, and London. She is a former journalist and podcast host of Authors Off the Page. She loves to read, write, teach, watch Hawaii Five-O reruns, and eat Canadian chocolate. Not necessarily in that order.

What a fun romp this book is! There is mystery, intrigue, danger and yes, a growing romance. Lady Alive is fantastic - a trained secret agent with plenty of moxie. She is strong, brave and smart but also very feminine and classy. She felt like the perfect heroine to me. I love how she stands her ground with Lord Wolverton and how much he grows to respect and enjoy that. 😉
The story was entertaining, the plot moved at a great pace and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
Sometimes I hold a story to high standards and expect it to be realistic. However, this book, with a lady of the ton who is also a spy in the Regency times, was the perfect element of fiction to top off a wonderfully delicious tale.
Alice is a delightful character. Under the tutelage of her father, she's the perfect spy to infiltrate the organization to unearth the traitor in their midst. She's sweet; she's tough; she's demure, with near perfect manners, and she's terribly good at what she does. When "The Wolf," otherwise known as Christian, comes into the scene, well...the match has been met and the sparks fly in all the ways imaginable.
The adventure, danger, romance, and mystery were wrapped up in an entertaining plot that sucked me right in and I couldn't put it down. The swoon is strong with this one, and there were times when I couldn't help but to smile, laugh, and squirm in some of the uncomfortable situations. I'm looking forward to the next book!
Content: mild romance; mild violence/moments of danger

A Regency era romantic suspense story. Kisses only.
Christian and Alice (dtr of a duke) were both spies trying to catch a traitor. As was her sire. This fast-paced story did equal justice to the romance and suspense aspects. It took a bit for the H to adjust to a female spy.
Christian, a former Major in the war, showed his smarts, quick wit, attn to detail, & concern for military men ad- justing to civilian life. A good man. He worked closely w/ intelligent, spirited & vibrant Alice on this spy case. They meshed well together & had genuine pride in each other. At one point someone cornered Alice and then...
Both MCs had family support. Refreshing! The last few months I've read HRs w/ some hateful or duplicitous or blackmail-prone family members, which adversely tore down the mood of the story.
Read to 5% in the ebook and identified this as a book I just wouldn't enjoy, personally, so I decided to move on and not leave the book with a bad review, etc. :)
It's nothing about the book itself, per se - I just don't enjoy reading books featuring continually offended heroines (well, at least she was continually offended for the first 5% - I don't know about the rest!) who exist more for modern audiences than for historical attitude accuracy. But that's what some people prefer, I know, so perhaps this review will lead some people in the right direction - as well as keep people like me away from it! :D
This book was a lot of fun to read. It is a Regency Romance with intrigue. A spy group is in danger of being exposed to the French. Two agents join forces to find the traitor who plans to sell them out. Of course, the agents are a man and a woman. It was great to see their interplay, growth of their relationship, and the general misunderstandings and mayhem that ensued.
The characters were wonderful. Alice is a poised Lady and uses her position to gather information that leaves the interrogated unaware of what they have revealed. It is truly a pleasure to see her at work. Her partner is "Wolf" an agent who served during the war and is known for his tracking ability. The two of them are talented and work well together. I loved the romantic tension between.
I am looking forward to reading more Regency novels from Julie Coulter Bellon!
The book contains mild kissing and non-graphic violence.
The Marquess Meets His Match is everything fun and romantic you would expect a regency spy novel to be! Intrigue, suspense, a swoony brooding hero, a strong but feminine heroine, banter, adventure, and of course some breath-stealing kisses!
Lady Alice is completely delightful as a duke’s daughter who lives a double life as a highly-trained, highly-skilled secret agent for the Crown along with her father. Alice can certainly take care of herself but she’s also still tenderhearted and truly cares about people. I loved both sides to Alice and how they combined to make her a heroine you can really cheer for.
Christian is just as swoony as Alice is delightful, and he’s not above getting all deliciously growly when the situation requires. (Be still my heart!) His backstory is emotionally layered, and his heart for others in his circle makes him even swoonier. Alice challenges him in more than one way, and I really enjoyed watching him fall for her. (Incidentally, I also love the Duke of Huntingdon, Alice’s father. He’s kind and smart and wise and loves his wife. He lets Alice be who he knows she is – all sides of her – without being overprotective but still treating her as a cherished daughter. He was just perfect.)
The plot is fraught with danger and tension… and suspects! Just when you think you’ve figured out for sure who’s behind the threat to their national security & their own lives, the story takes an entirely different turn and you’re back where you started. Or are you? It certainly kept me – and our protagonists – guessing until just at the end, adding a good dose of edge-of-your-seat suspense to the romantical tension.
Bottom Line: If you love a well-written story of Regency intrigue and romance, with engaging characters, then The Marquess Meets His Match belongs on your TBR list! Witty, fun, sincere, and romantic, this is a delightful way to spend a few hours & I look forward to the author’s next novel!
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I read through Kindle Unlimited)
First of all this book got me out of a reading slump. I opened the book and didn’t stop till I was done. I haven’t done that in a while. The mixture of historical fiction/romance/romantic suspense/mystery was the perfect combination to keep me interested! I suppose having a female bada** is what helped too! She was a future girl living in the past. She wasn’t dainty at all but she still had her proper self!! I wanted to know who the bad guy was and why! I had ideas but I was sooo wrong! I loved it!!
The romance was just right and it showed how sometimes you have to have faith and trust in the other person and not get distracted in what needs to be done. Lord Wolverton at first didn’t care to find Alice to be a spy. But he grew to trust her. And Alice still somehow kept herself from reproach and knew her stuff. They both had skills that complimented each other and together, they got the job done.
I really really loved this book. I just haven't had a book to keep me fully engaged lately. But I couldn't stop once I opened it up! It was full of action, adventure, mystery, intrigue and a touch of romance. I just can’t really describe enough of why I loved it!!
If you like historical fiction, post war problems, stories of mystery, finding out who the bad guy is, loving families, women who are spies, knife skills, horseback riding, people having good instincts, and finding love than this might be for you! As for me, it’s on my to read and reread list!
I loved this book! I was dragged into the story from the very beginning. And I didn’t want to stop reading. I was able to start and finish this one the very same day. It’s just so engaging!
Lady Alice is a great character. I loved how she was just gifted as a spy. She was a bit reckless, that just added to her charm. Who doesn’t want to imagine that they are a member of the ton, get to wear fancy dresses and be a spy on top of that?! I loved being able to see things through her eyes.
Then there’s Lord Wolverton or Christian. I liked that he was constantly watching out for Lady Alice, even when she didn’t need it. He was smart, he figures things out on his own at the end of the book. Even before it’s revealed to the reader. I loved that! It’s always nice to get points of view from the hero as well as the heroine. And I love when they kind of match in skill. That’s the case in this one.
If you like Regency books, you’ll love this one with the spy and romance twist! I loved it!
What a fun spy regency! No one would think that the only daughter of a duke is a spy, but that's what Lady Alice Huntington is, and she's a good one too--with great instincts, knife-fighting skills, and she can untie any knot when restrained. Christian (Lord Wolverton) is a baron, who's recently been called home from the war when his brother dies in an accident and his father suffers a stroke. He's a spy with the Falcon Group, trying to find out who killed Thomas Norwich.
I love Regency romances and I love mysteries, so this was an especially delightful read for me, although I didn't guess who was behind the selling of a spy list to the French--I'd never have figured it out. Alice and Christian are both wonderful characters--smart, brave, kind and they don't look down on those of lesser stations. I liked that Alice's parents had genuine affection for each other which seems to have been uncommon among the peerage in that era. I liked the intrigue and how well Alice and Christian worked together, especially liked that Christian looked at Alice as an equal and enjoyed learning all her secret talents.
I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narrator's voice. She was a new narrator to me.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT A traitor with a deadly plan. Two agents sent to expose his identity before he strikes. But danger is closer than they think . . .
MY TAKE What a fun story! I've read several of Bellon's contemporary military romantic suspense stories and really enjoyed them. This was the first historical of hers and wasn't disappointed.
Lady Alice has decided she's not interested in marrying. And once you realize she's a trained spy, working under the order of her father (a duke), I understood. What man in her time would care for a wife as capable and intelligent as she, when all he'd want is a nice dowry and a pretty (and quiet) lady on his arm.
So you can understand why Christian, recently home from the war and having lost his older brother and should have inherited the title. When he first enters society upon his return, he's faced with a very inquisitive woman. He warns her to take care when she follows a man she wishes to question. Then someone takes a shot at her. Or is it him?
A wonderful mystery ensues with both Alice and Christian working together ... and falling in love.
I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did a great job!

Alice is a Duke's daughter and she plays the part of a beautiful member of the ton perfectly, but don't be fooled! She is a top spy for The Falcon Group, a group led by her very own father. Everyone (except her dad) underestimates Alice, and she always works that to her advantage.
Alice is working a case when she meets fellow spy, Lord Wolverton - also known as Wolf. They start working the case together, and their attraction to each other is hard to resist.
This was my first regency romance. I'm not really into romance, but I was looking for a light, quick read, and since this had a secret society in it, I took a chance. It was actually much better than I expected! It was, of course, very predictable, but there was actually a story besides the romance, and that made it a lot more fun for me to read. And the romance was not instalove, though it was still very quick, so it was mostly sweet. I'll have to keep an eye out for similar stories, for next time I need a quick, fun read.
This was a new author for me and I’m glad I took the chance. The story was done well and I loved the main characters. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. Looking forward to more from this author and highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet, clean, regency romance novels with a bit of drama.
This was such a fun book. I loved the mystery and the suspense. I loved the romance and how they came to care about each other by working together to solve a mystery. I really enjoyed the story and the characters.
So...I'm conflicted on this one. On the one hand, I liked the premise, enjoyed the characters, and appreciated the way they got along for most of the book rather than continually sniping at each other. On the other hand, there were certain things that took me out of the story and made it hard to suspend disbelief, and the more I think about them, the more I want to shake my head. So yeah...
Positives first: Christian and Alice were both well rounded characters with a lot more to them than what they appeared on the outside--or their spy personas. And I appreciated the way that they came to respect each other's abilities and strengths. Some of the minor characters also displayed some intriguing depth. The backdrop of war and the struggles of veterans was interesting. I did struggle at times with the almost modern-seeming understanding of the issues faced by veterans, but having most of them voiced by Christian, who had been a soldier himself and understood the difficulties, definitely helped that.
And negatives: There were several little things scattered throughout the book that just felt inauthentic enough to take me out of the book--mostly having to do with Alice. Not her role as a spy--I was perfectly willing to suspend disbelief for that--but things like no one appearing to think it odd that she would just randomly get up from the table at a party she was hosting and not come back. Or the fact that no one commented when she mounted up in full evening dress to ride after an arsonist. Okay, yes, she could have done it, but for all the talk about tongues wagging, they certainly seemed silent about what should have raised more than a few eyebrows coming from a lady of her standing in society. There was also the fact that she was calling Christian by his first name in her head long before he asked her to call him that. Finally, there was one aspect of the climax that bugs me more every time I think about it:
Overall, there were a number of good elements to this story, but some of the historical improbabilities made it hard to fully appreciate them. 2.5 stars
Content--violence, including gunplay and knife fighting; mentions of blood and wounds; mentions of deaths, including murder; noticing, touching, and kissing; mention of a man having a "wicked" streak and a woman being drawn to him for it; mentions of drinking and drunkenness; mentions of the horrors of war and its effects
The Marquess Meets His Match is a fun read! Yes, I had to look past the unlikelihood of a member of the ton being a spy; but it was so worth it. The characters are very likable. Julie Coulter Bellon draws them so well that it's easy to get pulled into the story and feel the characters' emotions. The plot had some twists and turns and moves along at a good pace. There's some subtle humor in the book and a perfect HEA. I plan to read the next book that's about the heroine's best friend. I would recommend this to clean/wholesome Regency romance readers and to romantic suspense readers. I received an ARC. I chose to write a review and share my opinion of this delightful tale.
This is no ordinary run-of-the-mill regency novel, it is so much more!!! Don't get me wrong, I love a good regency romance, but this has spies, intrigue, mystery, danger, edge-of-your-seat action and love to boot! The back and forth between Wolf and Lady Alice is something you don't want to miss. I love how head strong they both are, each one asserting that they are right. They make a great team and I was left wondering if they could or would ever catch the culprit! Bellon kept me guessing until the very end and I loved every second of The Marquess Meets His Match! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed reading a regency with a secret operative twist. Regencies are known for their happily ever after love stories; this one was different because the heroine was also a spy. The story was well paced and the characters were easy to like. Alice and Lord Wolverton had a rocky start, but ended up having to rely on each other to solve the mystery.
Julie Coulter Bellon does a great job keeping readers engrossed in her stories. They are written with just the right amount of mystery and love.
Interesting to see a duke's daughter caught up in the nefarious world of spy vs spy. Napoleon has been defeated, but the war continues through spy rings on both sides of the Channel as the jockeying for power continues. Battle weary soldiers come home with horrifying dreams of tne terrors they have witnessed. Through it all, the ton remains in control of society and tries to maintain control. Most are oblivious to the mechanisms in place to hold the country in safety. This story contains vestiges of truth about liasons that formed among the elite patriots of England to ferret out the traitors. The love story intermingled through it is sweet and wholesome, with the lady in question fully capable of using her wits and training to single out the culprits.
Major Wolverton has been called home to England, but he has received information that the spy group that he is a member of - Falcon Group - is in danger. A traitor intends to hand over a list of members to the French. The head, the Duke of Huntingdon, insists that the now Lord Christian Wolverton aka Wolf works with his daughter, Lady Alice Huntingdon to help uncover the traitor. Before another British spy is murdered, like Thomas Norwich, son of the Earl of Moreland. An enjoyable historical mystery and romance.
The lovely Alice is way more than she seems. She and her father, the Duke, are trying to find a tractor to the English government. A handsome agent called the Wolf, comes to assist them and after a lot of excitement, well, you know how the story ends. Enjoy.
A little mystery, some clean romance, a dashing hero, and a spunky heroine...If you want to escape to another world for a few hours, this book is perfect for you. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
When they meet there was an attraction, but he had a mission to finish, didn’t need any obstacles in his way. Already has problems with father’s health. You need to read this!
Wow, Julie’s historic fiction is just as thrilling as her modern day books! I love a good spy story :-) Alice was awesome...she kicked butt while still being a lady! And I loved the interactions between her and Christian.
A heroine who is not a simpering miss, but actually works with her father and others in service of her country. Two suitors, one ardent but suspected of treason, the other newly introduced to the heroine. Well written, “clean” as appropriate to the time.
Great characters as always, and a heart stopping hero. The heroine has talents beyond those possessed by most Recency ladies. I loved the suspenseful plot and the surprise twist at the end. A great read.
