Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. If vampires kill your entire family, vengeance is a must.
I can’t say my parents never warned me about vampires. I just never believed them. Not—that is—until six months ago when vampires broke into my home and killed my family. Thanks to all the skills my parents taught me, I managed to escape but I couldn’t save them.
Two vampires down and the rest of the world to go.
My bid for revenge is going to have to wait, though, because until I turn 18, I’m being placed in the loving care of Elizabeth and Jonathan McKnight—godparents I didn’t even know existed. The clock is ticking until I can get back to my goal of eradicating the vampire race. But something is amiss at my new high school. According to my parents, vampires can’t walk in daylight. So, why then, does Torin Priest? If he’s not a vampire, then what is he? Because unlike the obnoxious asshole, Maverick McKnight, who sees me as some sort of bloodsucking leech on his wealthy family, Torin Priest is most certainly not human.
eh. the writing was surprisingly decent in a technical sense, but i wasn't particularly impressed with the characters. it wasn't that they were bad they just didn't have much in the way of personality. likely will not continue on with this series though it does have me interested in picking up other books that look like this on KU (the covers like this have turned me off previously).
Wow. I finished this forever ago and I'm just now getting to the review part. Yikes!
Rest in Pieces was such a hard book to put down. Seriously, it was. In it, you will meet Barbie. She doesn't really care if you like her or not because she has so much on her mind and her shoulders. So when it comes to high school drama? Eh. Vampires? Well, shit.. she has to kill them bloodsuckers. Especially the ones who killed her family in front of her eyes.
Talk about traumatizing.
Now it's safe to say that I got all kinds of Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes. Heck, right after the first couple of chapters I just wanted to turn on the show and watch. Luckily, I kept with the book because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. Just like with Buffy, Barbie sort of has this weird love triangle happening. I'm here for it all which is weird because I have love triangles with a passion.
I'm very intrigued with how this one ended too. With so many questions roaming around in my brain, I definitely want to dive into the sequel some time today or this weekend. I just need to know what is going to happen next and if she will get her revenge. That's it. Okay, there's totally more that I want to know and to happen but I can try to be patient.

Rest in Pieces by Lucinda Dark is the first book in the Barbie: the Vampire Hunter series and just because of the obvious name similarity to Buffy the Vampire Slayer I had some really high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it missed the mark for me, but we’ll touch on why later.
Barbie was recently orphaned when her family was killed by a set of vampires. No worries she killed them back, but now she is in the foster care system and has gone to live with her wealthy godparents. They are nice people who are glad to have her even if their son, Maverick, isn’t. Add to that the strange boy she had instant chemistry with at the rich school she is now attending and bam love triangle potential is everywhere. It appears she has landed a little closer to her new vampire nemesis than she realizes and there is danger afoot everywhere.
Sounds like some solid potential, right? Plot possibilities are there but it was missing the fun banter dialogue that Buffy had, which would not be that terrible, but Barbie can come off kind of mean and let’s face it bitchy at times. Also, none of the other characters in the book seem to have any imagination and she is called a bitch by around four different characters. Also, if you’ve read any of my reviews you might know I’m not a huge fan of love triangles. It is a rare occasion that any of them go well for me and mostly it is a ploy to kick up some emotional drama. It can be done right, but for me that is the exception not the rule.
Last but not least is that this book couldn’t seem to decide what it wanted to be. Is it YA? Is it NA? Is it adult PNR? Even now I can’t tell you. It is written like it is for Young Adults set in a high school with the big showdown during prom. But then there was talk of heat in my core and I just wanted to stick my cock in her, so definitely not YA in my eyes. I might have done better in a college setting if we are throwing stuff like that into the book.
A little more focus on the plot and a little less on the love triangle and I think I would have enjoyed it more. I would call this a mash up of Buffy + Mean Girls + Twillight. If that is your jam, then this might be a better read for you.
Narration: Kevin T. Collins and Heather Costa do a great job on narration and I always like having different narrators for dual or triple PoV narrations. I think it adds a lot to the story. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.
This was better than expected but then again my expectations going in weren’t high! I seem to be in the mood for brain candy and this one had vampires, a brave heroine and two love interests. There wasn’t anything terribly original although I did like the idea of dhampires. This is a great book after a hard day when you’re mentally exhausted but want something to read!
For a book I pre-ordered, it sure took me a while to read it. But what better way to start a series than when it's already completed?
Rest in Pieces was entertaining although I wouldn't say it rocked my world. I liked Barbie, I liked Torin and I was most definitely enjoying the sexual tension. But as for Maverick or the plot, I am not sure where to stand.
Maverick had a good thing going on, the love-hate relationship we all crave for. But a few chapters in and his anger turned into puppy love to switch again afterwards. If Torin is schizophrenic, Maverick is bipolar in love.
The plot, on the other hand, was almost non-existent, like one random episode of the first season of Buffy. School drama, a couple of fights and a hot brooding vampire. But let's be honest, I'm not here for the story but for Barbie's sarcastic very outer bitch.
This was an interesting story and I liked how the paranormal was portrayed. But for me the characters were lacking and it didn't have me very invested in them. It also felt a little oddly paced and the ending came a lot sooner than I thought it would. I know there are more books to come but the lack of love for the characters doesn't have me wanting to read those. Maybe one day I'll come back and give them a try but for now I'm ending here.
An intriguing start to the series, our heroine Barbie’s whole world changes when the stories her parents told her regarding the existence of vampires turn out to be actual reality and after her father, mother and brother are all brutally slaughtered by these dark creatures she’s out for some revenge and some definite answers on the whys of it all.
After a stint in a group home she’s finally fostered by rich godparents she wasn’t actually aware she had but this new life also plunges her smack bang into the thick of it all as she soon discovers the answers she is seeking are now finally within her grasp.
We have two potential love interests here and I’m hoping this one turns out to be a ménage which I’m kinda thinking it will especially considering Barbie's current predicament and that it was also multiple POV.
So Maverick is initially hostile suspicious of Barbie's hidden intentions whilst Torin is a dark horse and definitely much more than he first appears. these two also used to be besties until a couple of years prior. Now with Barbie's arrival secrets are finally uncovered and Maverick learns the truth about Torin and what he actually is.
This was multiple POV Barbie Torin and Maverick. It was an easy well written read with plenty of action and a ton of chemistry and I’m now excited to discover just where we go from here and I will definitely be continuing on with this series.
This was such a fun book for me. I loved Barbie's sarcasm, her witty retorts, and the deadpan humor strung throughout.
"Don't worry, I don't bite," the girl at my side said, sending me a polite smile. "I should hope not," I replied. Because if she did, then I'd have to stake her.
I cannot wait for the next installment in this fun series, especially after the twist toward the end. I'm also not sure if I'm Team Maverick or Team Torin. Maybe Team Both?
Overall, an excellent, fast-paced story with lots of action, hot guys, and a heroine I'd love to call my best friend. Happy Reading!
This was such a fun menage read and I cannot wait to see what's next for Barbie and her two guys.... After the death of her entire family Barbie has been in the foster system for awhile when mystery God parents decide to take her in. The last thing Barbie wants is a fake family or people in her life she doesn't need. She has one goal in mind and that's to take out as many vampires as she can. If only she listened to her parents warnings over the years perhaps they'd all still be alive. Barbie has an insane amount of guilt over the events that took her family and hunting down her families killers becomes priority numero uno. She has no one she can trust and no one who would even take her seriously if she told the truth. What a coincidence that she ends up living not only in a town with resident vamps but the same place the individual who ordered their deaths is from, in fact she even meets his son and thus sets off a whole bunch of events we're nowhere near seeing the end of.
Having been home schooled all her life, high school drama is beneath Barbie. And honestly it is because her day to day thoughts barely compare to that of her peers, filled with stakes and murder vs their concerns about dances and romance. Not to say the heroine isn't brought to a halt by two particular guys. Guys who everyone wants to be around, wants to be and certainly wants to date. It annoys her but damn if she can keep either out of her mind for more than five minutes. The rumor mill loves both Maverick and Torin and the amount of gossip about them and their once friendship has people in the school constantly making up rumors. I loved the heroine getting to know both guys. Neither are love interests right away and there is almost always so much tension and drama between the three I'm curious how they will all even manage to stay alive let alone find a HEA. Really fun read so far even with all the mean girl drama ;P
Barbie and her brother grew up with their parents warning them about monsters; training them to fight, to hunt. But until that fateful night, Barbie didn't believe them. Then six months ago vampires came into her home and killed her family. Barbie managed to kill the vampires and escape but she wasn't able to save her family. However, she can avenge them. She's determined to find the one responsible for ordering their deaths and destroy. But first, she has to go live with godparents that she never knew existed and their gorgeous ill-tempered son Maverick and attend their fancy school. Having been home-schooled Barbie has never navigated the drama-filled halls but it's clear early on that something odd is going on. Parties with vampires, gruesome murders in crowds, and Torin, another gorgeous guy that isn't all human.
Obviously inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this story is fun! Starring the snarky girl, the standoffish godlike guy, and the football star. Throw in two sweet parents, a wise priest, a chatty gossip, a mean girl wannabe, some terrifying vampires and you have the cast all in place. Now add some training, weapons, and holy water and the stage is set. Oh, don't forget to add sexual tension and danger. Put it all together and you have an amusing adventure. I didn't want to put it down. I loved the back and forth from typical day to life-threatening night. There's a twist at the end I did not see coming. It should make Barbie's story even more entertaining. Can't wait.
I liked it. Whether I’ll like the next book or not I have no idea. It was fun and Barbie takes no prisoners. I enjoyed how she deals with mean girls. Multiple POVs. Two guys and at the moment does read more as a love triangle. Favourite character was the vamp.
YAY! given her age (teens) i was a lil worried it might be a bit on the immature side for me but thankfuck it wasnt. -i tend towards uni/college age at the youngest usually- it was awesome. Like yes please more absolutely love where this is going sign me the fuck up. Their were moments that maybe couldve been a little mmm nicer is the wrong word but solid? Like a lot happened in this book and i always tend to give first books more leeway since they have a lot of leg work burden compared to following books. But yeah it defs established a great world characters plot etc etc. Im greedy and wanted it to be more relationship-y and like more in depth conversations since they mostly were lots of short encounters rather than wuality one on one time so yeah thats my only like 'qualm' more friendly time more relationshippy time more bonding trio time more family esque time like more character time and a bit less action movie would be cool like even if the bonding or in depth stuff is over like researching a big bad or something like it can be both like training and a truth for every hit in or something. Idk i love it. Read it. Next ones out end of december which cant come soon e fucking nough. Oh i read this on my birthday too so i mean what a great fucking day haha. The power was out their was a storm i mean what a great atmosphere. Really suited the level of story.
ONE ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE!!! Off the hook! Lucinda puts it all on the line, laying this baby out so skillfully and precise fusing this jewel together solid as steel. You are not going to believe how this baby plays out. Amazing scenario's that punch dead center with such intensity and glittering precision, propels this little guy into a tailspin with stunning impacts. Speculations, hope, strength, revelations and determination press forward, thrusting this little guy to a whole new level. Jumping hoops, coping with the trials and tribulations, keeping pace with a bevy of plot twists and sharp corners, baring witness to the struggle and strife our characters face. The characters are genuine and original with depth and qualities that make it easy to relate. Their on point personalities transform and flourish into the amazing roles they were created for. The scenes are so vividly detailed and descriptive its paints a fantastic backdrop. Awesome job Lucinda, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
Wow! What a great book! If you want a strong and fiesty heroine and not one but 2 bad boy leading men then look no further! With plenty of drama and excitement throughout, a great storyline, well written with humour included then you are goi g to love this well written book, I am waiting patiently (just) for book two! I highly recommend
I just love Barbie, she is so awesome. Her snark and general attitude makes me want to be her when I grow up. The story itself is so entertaining, engaging and well written that once I started reading it I did not want to put it down. When I got to the end, I kept hoping for just one more page. I can't wait to find out what happens next
A great read! Interesting story line. Fast paced action, and building love interests make the way for a great series! Now I just need more of it! Please! Team Mav!
This was kind of a weird knock off to Buffy the Vampire Slayer the movie. While, I like it. I hated the whole could be love triangle thing. That was frustrating. Other than that, I thought Barbie was awesome.
When I first bought my Kindle in 2009, I read so many vampire stories I burned myself out on the genre and it took only until this past year for me to be able to start reading stories centered around them again. Honestly, I’ve stopped reading most after about 25% because it feels like I’ve read it before. So when I was emailed an ARC opportunity for this book from booksprout, I was intrigued but not that excited because it’s a vampire storyline. Oh boy, am I glad I read it! I loved Barbie and the world created in this book. I read it all in one night and can’t wait for the next one to release. There were a couple of things about the story I didn’t like but they didn’t bother me enough to take off a star. One thing I didn’t like was the name Maverick. I’ve only met dogs with that name so it’s hard for my brain to change the association from cute puppy to hot guy. But he’s mostly called Mav throughout the book so it never really annoyed me like I thought it would when I first read the name. The other thing I didn’t care for that was also a critique in other reviews was the age of the characters. Their actions and explicit behavior made it hard to believe they were 17. They felt more like college aged characters. But Barbie has to be a minor otherwise there wouldn’t have been a legal reason to send her to live with godparents she didn’t know. I was in middle school when Buffy the vampire slayer (which this book seems to draw inspiration from) started airing so it was easy for me to let the age issue go. This is because Buffy was 15 when called to be a slayer and she was around 17 when she & Angel took their physical relationship to the next level, which unexpectedly led to the loss of his soul. Is that a spoiler? It’s been about 20 years so I’m gonna say no. Do I think teenagers should be acting like this in real life? Of course not. But this is a work of fiction about vampires and it’s purpose is to entertain and I found it very entertaining. If you can’t let go of the age of the characters and the explicit content, then you may not like this book. Especially since Barbie’s decision at the end of the story will probably led to even steamier stuff in the next book. Overall, this book was an exciting start to the series and I’m really looking forward to the next one!

This was a fabulous read. Really enjoyed the premise and it does remind me of the wonderful Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series a bit. Wonderful well written plot and story line that will engage you from the start. Well fleshed out characters that I really enjoyed reading about and following along with. I really can't wait to read more of this series and recommend reading it!

What originally pulled me in when I saw this book up for preorder was the name. When you hear the name Barbie a badass vampire hunter isn't really the first thing that comes to mind. All I could see was this girly girl in heels fighting vampires...so obviously I had to have it!
I am so incredibly glad that I snagged this beauty up! I devoured it in a single day and got a bit of a book hangover from it!
Barbie's story of how she has gotten to where she's at is one of true sadness but also of love and family. She will do anything in her power to get revenge for the tragedy that struck her family.
Sadly in the beginning Barbie is very closed off and doesn't want to let anyone in for fear of losing them. Not to mention her fear of putting them at risk. It made it all the more difficult for Torin and Maverick to get her to trust them and rely on them for help.
Torin has a lot of his own family baggage that is a constant weight on his shoulders. Having a barely there father that wants nothing more than to rule the world makes life more than a little difficult for him. Especially when his father's "minions" are constantly causing a ruckus when they visit to babysit Torin.
From the outside looking in Maverick has the perfect life, a nice family, money, popular, football star, basically the definition of a highschool king. He's missing something tho, perhaps a someone, and Barbie just might be the perfect thing to fulfill the need that he didn't even know he had
I freaking love supernatural romances! I would totally consider this to be New Adult because the scenes can be a bit graphic, so just a heads up on that.
Now on the story, Rest in Pieces was freaking good! The entire story line with the plot and conflict was done quite well, I was sucked in from the very beginning. I also really liked the characters and saw Barbie as being so freaking similar to Buffy, The Vampire Slayer--- which is one of my favorite shows- ever! The snarkyness and the drive is what caused the similarities. I will say that the ending left me wondering how exactly the next books in the series will play out with an introduction to a new entity, but I am definitely intrigued and want to see what happens next!
All in all, if you like new adult supernatural romances with a humor and a few SUPER hot scenes, Rest in Pieces will definitely be your thing! Now when is the next book coming out?!?!
PS: Thank you to Lucinda Dark and Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me an ARC of the book to read and review honestly!
This story is absolutely fantastic! It’s full of action, suspense and intrigue, with so many little twists and turns. The whole story is a phenomenal rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. Once you start reading you won’t be able to stop.
Barbie is one kickass troubled teenager! She has had some really bad things happen to her, which forced her onto a path that she really wasn’t ready to take just yet. But she will do anything for vengeance. The two new men in her life will either help her or eventually be her downfall.
Favourite quotes: “And in case you can’t understand that, understand this...thou shalt not try me. Do so at your own peril.”
“I’m like a flower. I look beautiful and sweet, but I’ve got a f*** ton of thorns and if you f*** with me, I will stab you.”
I freaking love Barbie. Shes fierce and feisty in a no holds barred kindle of way!
Phenomenal writing and storytelling. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Wow what an amazing story and who doesn’t love the name Barbie the Vampire Hunter it made me chuckle because I was imagining Barbie the plastic doll with stakes in her hands fighting vampires. This story is about Barbie whose parents trained her in combat against the vampires she didn’t believe them until one night her whole family was attacked and killed by vampires in front of her but she managed to get away. Barbie is put into the care of her godparents she didn’t know she had but she is very determined to get those vampires that killed her parents until she is sent to a new school. I ♥️♥️ this story and Barbie who is going to be one hell of a kick ass girl and I can’t wait to read book 2, it’s a 5 plus ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read. I also bought a copy of this book because I love these authors and Vampire Hunter stories.
As someone who was (and still is) a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer I knew I wanted to read this book as soon as I read the blurb. This book isn't a fanfic on Buffy though, it's a very well written read with some similarities to that story. It starts off with Barbie, the MC, being taken to meet her new potential adoptive family. A couple who knew her parents but are strangers to Barbie. What follows is an adventure with some laughs along the way (I loved the humour in this book) Barbie is a strong character that doesn't need to depend on others, she's capable of kicking some a** all on her own. However she does meet two potential love interests and I'm torn as to which if them I prefer as they both have similar good and bad points to them. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I really liked Barbie as a character and enjoyed the storyline. A five star read for me.
Initially I did not know what to think of the story and if Barbie but I was completely captivated by the book and by Barbie’s heartbreaking story! She definitely appears older than her 17 years, however this is probably because of what she has had to go through! And then you have Torin and Maverick...these two young men are pretty intense and their relationship is surrounded with mystery and complex emotions! What I did enjoy about Barbie’s characters is that she is not all put together, this is realistic! She will sometimes freeze when in danger, be less powerful then the vampires and full of confusion about her feeling for the guys! The end of this first part to her story left me wanting more and I cannot wait to read book two!
This story was perfection. The plot was so well put together, and even for the beginning of a series, there weren’t any plot holes. You can see such a broader picture for the future, but the characters have me craving the next book.
Barbie, I expected sass and sarcasm, but she was so much more. Not a perfect heroine who can “do anything and everything” but embraces mistakes and learns from her past. She’s such a straight foreword character it was a breath of fresh air in a genre where heroines are super snarky (not that I don’t enjoy those characters) She is perfect.
I really really enjoyed this book. When I started reading it, I was not really sure what to expect, Once I started, I was totally surprised. The story will grab you, keeping your interest until the very last word is read and then some. The book moves along at a very good pace making it easy for the reader to keep reading. It is not too fast nor too slow. The characters are very well written and you feel as though you have known them forever. You want o help them, no matter what. This bok needs to be read, you will not be sorry that you did.
An intriguing storyline that sadly ends on a cliffhanger that hints at the upheaval to come. I really like the heroine Barbie! She is seventeen, orphaned and on a vengeance seeking journey as a vampire hunter. An intrepid young girl whose life will soon be more complicated between her, her foster brother Maverick and the still human vampire hottie Torin, not to mention the nest of vampires Barbie has stirred up. Well I really want to see what happens next because vengeance has not been sated!

Absolutely loved everything about this book. Lucinda put all the things into a book that makes me lose myself in it/I devour in a couple sittings. I love Barbie. She is sassy and hilarious. I snorted at a couple places. There is also some amazing tension and butt-kicking scenes that had me on the edge of my seat. Cannot wait til book 2 is here, I will be rereading this series again and again, I can already feel it. It might have tied my favorite book by Lucinda's other pen name, which is saying something because that other book is in my top 20 of RH books of all times.
