For fans of Clifford and Spot, welcome everybody’s favorite little yellow puppy, Biscuit, in an I Can Read adventure! The city is a big, busy place for a little yellow puppy. From gazing at the tops of tall buildings to chasing pigeons across crowded sidewalks, there's so much to do! There are more people than Biscuit's ever seen before, too -- and so many new friends to make! Biscuit Visits the Big City , a My First I Can Read book, is carefully crafted using basic language, word repetition, sight words, and sweet illustrations—which means it's perfect for shared reading with emergent readers.
Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
Read along with my toddler to prepare her for AR test. This story followed Biscuit the dog. The girl and her dad took Biscuit to visit their friend Jack. Biscuit the dog was amazed by the big city and barked at everything and everyone. The girl had to chase after him. They saw tall buildings and lots of people.
SUPER FAST REVIEW: Awwwww!!!!! Super funny, very cute, wonderful art, great illustrations, nice story, adorable animals. Yep nothing to dislike here! Another amazing Biscuit book!
Here is what Cameron (6) has to say about Biscuit:
"[The book] is super cute! I'm sad that I'm too big for it now, but other kids will like it a lot!"
We are getting rid of her Biscuit books, so we decided to give it one last whirl. Very cute, and I'll definitely remember it as one of the "bedtime favorites" for both of my siblings (now 12 and 6).
Biscuit and his owner visit the big city and Biscuit makes some new friends.
I like that this did perspective very well. It really looks at a big city from the perspective of a little girl and a dog. The emphasis is on the city being very tall, noisy, and filled with pigeons and people to meet. Beginning readers get to practice reading the noises that dogs and pigeons make, which both happen to feature the oo sound.
I liked this early reader because it constantly repeated "woof woof". Once the student sounds out the word, having this repetition increases their ability to recognize the word "woof", and also gives students a confidence booster after reading some hard words. The illustrations are nice as well.
Biscuit and the little girl are in the big city. The preschool and PreK kids I read to love the Biscuit books, as they like to bark along with him. The city is quite busy and Biscuit has a lot to explore. I feel this story isn’t quite as engaging as some of the others in the series.
My daughter liked this book, I personally think the barking and cooing was a bit too much of the book's content. Could have been more descriptive but it was pretty much a little girl worrying about her dog the whole time. Not bad, just wasn't the best.
I liked this one a lot. I think even more than my mom. I had her read it again right after the first time reading it. I like when Biscuit says Woof woof - my mom has me say that part. Cute story
I liked this book because it is about adventures and I like adventures, and it is about dogs (I like dogs). It is also about the city, and we live in the city. The lesson is not to wander off because you might get lost.
Capucilli, A. S., & Schories, P. (2006). Biscuit visits the big city. New York, NY: HarperCollins.
Biscuit is a fun, lovable puppy that is in for an adventure. Biscuit visits the city with his family. He has never been to the city before and spies quite a few different things. He sees tall buildings, is scared by honking cars and makes friends with some pigeons. This is an adventure that Biscuit will not forget.
This story is part of the Biscuit series. This series has been around for decades and proves to be a winner for most beginning readers. Biscuit tends to have small, simple sight words and repetitive text that allows emerging readers to increase their reading confidence. The text is large, clean cut and easy to read. The illustrations are cute, playful, and easily attract young readers. The illustrations support the text which will aid beginning reader. Most children age 3-5 years will be attracted to the front cover which has a picture of Biscuit being intrigued by a pigeon. This is a quick read for most.
