A sleepy little town doesn’t know what, or whom, is about to hit it when Ked, Kaden Edmond Donegal, comes to live.

Hyper and determined, Ked longs to be a great forest ranger, taking care of the land, watching over it like its protector. What he didn’t count on is falling in love with the people there nearly as much as the land, and one in particular that doesn’t give him the time of day.

Sean Ashby moved to Bear Lake to hide away from the world after he nearly died while serving in the army. A local artist, he makes his living bringing pieces of wood to life with stories of their own. When he sees Ked, he sees someone who needs tamed, but he doesn’t feel as if he’s up to the job.

Not giving up on the bearded ginger bear, Ked does everything he can to get in the way of the man, and he finally gets what he wants. Or, at least, what he thought he wanted. Sean is a dominant who needs a submissive, and Ked never thought of himself that way. With Ked’s rambling voice hushed and his hyper movements slowed, Sean leads him into a new life he didn’t realize he needs so badly.

The townspeople take him in as family, a man loves him unconditionally, and poachers are in need of catching. Is Ked up for his new life? Can he be a part of a community that is quirky and quiet, or will his own quirks and rarely silent voice make him permanently an outsider?

Contains BDSM and consensual sex between two men. Trigger warnings: abuse, violence and PTSD flashbacks.

I love writing, it's been my dream for many years, and in October of 2013, when my first book went live on Amazon, that dream came true.

Writing love stories that are centered on flawed but lovable characters is my passion. Finding love between people isn't easy, nor should it be. Even in a book, there have to be obstacles for the story to feel real.

I am a mother of three amazing people, and three adorable fur babies. I live in Colorado but love many other places besides my home. One state in particular is New Mexico, the state where I was born has always held a place in my heart.

People and places make my stories what they are. Each character I've written is a part of me in some way. Each place I write is as well. Adventures come in many ways, and each of my stories has taken me on an adventure that I treasure.

Come with me on my adventures and fall in love with my characters, as I have. I promise, you will love the ride.

This was a real disappointment for me. I found Ked to be completely irritating. I didn’t care for the relationship between him and Sean. I couldn’t really get into the book and once the mystery was solved I just couldn’t believe their relationship. I won’t be reading the next book.

When “Bear Essentials” opens, Ked is beginning a career he has been working hard for. He’s always felt a connection to nature and the outdoors in general and he’s about to begin working as a forest ranger based out of a small town called Bear Lake. He has left behind everything to do his dream job based only on some photos of the town and a long-standing desire to do something to benefit the land.

Ked is a slight man, and his mind and mouth never stop! During the first part of the novel, I felt for the townspeople who were meeting him as his running dialogue was difficult to even follow. I hate to say it, but I found myself skipping over some of his lengthy paragraphs of dialogue because I found it quite confusing. I did get used to it eventually!

As Ked gets to know the townsfolk he meets Sean Ashby. Sean moved to Bear Lake to avoid people. He’s an artist and a bit elusive … that is until he gets wind of Ked. Although there is instant chemistry between the two men, Sean implies that there are things that Ked doesn’t know about him. Ked seems to take it on as a mission and begins his discovery of what Sean Ashby is and who he is.

A couple of things happen in the novel. There is the exploration of Sean’s life as a “Dom”. The description of the book says that there is BDSM content but it’s on the lighter side. There is going to be a continuation of the novel so I expect that this side of Sean and Ked’s relationship may be expounded upon in the future.

There is also a slight mystery with a tantalizing injection of danger. While out trying to catch some poachers, Ked is injured and becomes the target of some nasty people. This event comes back to haunt Ked a few times throughout the novel.

Both Ked and Sean have things from their pasts that they are struggling with. Each of them is dealing with quite different things, but it’s another plotline running through the novel. I thought that Sean’s storyline was the most interesting although I found the emotions of his character the most difficult to connect with.

What I really enjoyed about the book was the marvelous collection of supporting characters that made up the town. Everyone who was introduced was unique and interesting and slowly, they all welcomed Ked into their chosen family. Carrington has captured the tight-knit community of a small town and the way that they all rely on one another. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more about the town’s residents and all the things that they get up to.

DNF @ 20%. The romance hasn't even gotten started, there are at least four different plot threads and I don't really care about any of them. Ked is also a very exhausting main character who seems to be constantly talking, putting his foot in his mouth, stepping into other people's business and making assumptions about them. Not a book for me.

I was super excited to read this book. It was a cold rainy day and I wanted something to take me away for a bit. Ked and Sean's story did the trick! While I thought the book was a bit wordy and long at times I did enjoy the super sweetness between Ked and Sean, especially early on. The whole lake life setting makes me want to move and be part of a small, sweet, little lake community. I enjoyed the book and will read the next one.

I have to start off by saying that Ked is tiring. He doesn't stop. He is always moving and talking - he needs someone like Sean. I also have to say that the beginning of Bear Essentials is very sweet - in fact, I may have to use the word saccharine. However, this feeling did not last for long. Once I got into the flow of the book that sweetness passed.
Even though Bear Essentials is described as a BDSM story for me there were very few BDSM elements and the scenes were few and far between. The book could have easily be written without any at all.
Bear Lake is one of those places which would best be described as quirky. The setting is lovely and it seems that when someone settles there they never want to leave and, yes, I am looking at Dan. The locals are also that little bit different, but they suit Bear Lake perfectly. It seems that they have created this perfect little bubble and once you are in you may never want to leave.
There is a lot in the story in that we have romance, poaching and attempted murder to mention but a few.
It is well written and the story interesting. It ends with those dreaded words 'to be continued in the next book' but that next book will concentrate on another couple. I will be revisiting Bear Lake.

This is an interesting start to a new series with quirky characters, an intriguing storyline, some surprising twists and a beautiful setting. Ked is sweet, funny and completely unable to control what he says. I love his enthusiasm for his new job and how he works so hard to learn everything as quickly as possible. Once he meets Sean he is determined to win him over and even when he finds out what the major obstacle is he is not deterred in his quest. They are complete opposites but they have a strong connection and I like how their relationship evolves. I wish that there was more emphasis on the BDSM aspects of their relationship and a bit more background information about both of them. There is also a lot going on in this story and I found that distracting as well as a bit unnecessary. My favorite part of this story are all of the residents of Bear Lake and how they are all unique in their own way as well as how they come together as a strong and supportive community when needed. I look forward to reading the next book in this new and entertaining series.

Ked was cute and endearing. I adored his unstoppable chatter, how well he knew his strengths and weaknesses, and most of all, how unrelentingly he wooed Sean. He learned about BDSM lifestyle when he found out Sean was part of it, although at the beginning only because he thought it was hot. Admittedly, kink wasn't strongly involved in their relationship, even when they started dating, definitely not to the levels I know this author can write. But they built together a dynamic that worked for them and I loved them together.

My favorite thing about this story is that, while it was concentrated on the romance between Ked and Sean, a big part of it also about the small community of Bear Lake and the natural environment surrounding it. The residents were amazingly portrayed, too, and I enjoyed seeing how much they were part of each other's lives, supportive, helping people who were there for one another for the good and the bad. I can't wait to see more of them in the next installment of this series.

This is a great start to a new series, with a compelling storyline and an interesting host of characters. I enjoyed getting to know not only Ked and Sean, but all the other townspeople of the quiet and quirky Bear Lake. And the connection between Ked and Sean was wonderful to read about. They fit together perfectly, and Sean is exactly the calming presence Ked needs. The only hang up I had - and it was very slight - was that sometimes Ked's dialogue was a little long and unnecessary, and it felt a bit drawn out. Other than that, he is adorable and fun and enthusiastic, especially in his quest to win over the quiet and reserved Sean. Well-written with a few twists and turns, and a sweet romance, I can't wait for the next in the series.

Book One always sets the tone

This is Book 1 in the Bear Lake Chronicles and I can't wait to read Book 2. The characters in the town are engaging and fun. The two main characters are well matched and wonderful. The sex is steamy and the Dom/sub relationship is perfection. I loved, loved, loved this story and want more. Rain Carrington is batting a thousand.

I wasn't sure what to think of Ked at first and was a little worried that I would start to get annoyed with him. He's the definition of someone with "verbal diarrhea", he talks so much that people have a hard time following everything he says when he gets going. However, he has a heart of gold and loves his job and the land he is supposed to protect. I loved how he brought more energy to the small town he was in and helped people in so many ways. His tendency to talk about everything caused some problems, but it also got the people around him to talk more and open up. His enthusiasm to do things to help others and to get Sean was almost infectious.

Sean is gruff and hard to get to know. I felt for Ked as he tried to get closer to Sean and felt like he was getting nowhere fast. Once Sean was ready to get to know Ked, I loved that he was honest and said what he wanted. I also loved that Sean showed Ked how open and trusting he was going to be by telling Ked things he tended to keep to himself. His gesture to let Ked know he was ready was amazing and I would have loved to have seen it in real life. It sounded amazing.

Their relationship initially was slow going and then builds fast once Sean is all in. While I wasn't happy with Ked and his poor judgment about a few situations, I was happy to see Sean and everyone else pointing out where he went wrong, but not hounding him about his mistakes. I loved that Sean was there for Ked and was willing to listen and let them rebuild their trust. I had a few niggles of doubts about how one of the main conflicts in Ked's job was handled, but nothing that worried me too much.

The people in the town were amazing. I almost want to find a town like that to move to someday; where everyone takes care of each other, even if it has the drawbacks like that everyone knows most everyone else's business. I loved how they teased each other and helped Sean and Ked in so many ways. While I have a good idea who the next book is about, I can't wait to see how that story unfolds as well.

I didn’t much care for Ked. He’s foolish and foolhardy. He’s irritatingly verbose, and frustratingly nonsensical. His demeanor is light-hearted, but it felt like he crossed people’s boundaries without regard for how it might affect them. That brand of nonchalance came off as callous, when I’m sure the author’s intention was for Ked to seem overly caring and unexpectedly in touch with this community. It felt like too much, though. Ked shows up to a Friday night drinking session in the park and suddenly it’s the best party in town because he thought to play music? He inserts himself into everyone’s lives and it’s okay because he’s trying to help them figure out some obvious truth? I never really connected with Ked’s internal or external verbal diarrhea dialogue, and therefore it didn’t feel genuine when every person in town was suddenly smitten with him. Sean seemed like an okay partner, but the whole Woods Dom thing with how he fetishized Ked as a wood nymph and pushed for outdoor sexytimes, as a result, felt weird.

I WANT TO LIVE AT BEAR LAKE!!!

I fell in love with Colorado through RAIN CARRINGTON. Her love of the land and the wonder around her shines clear in her writing. Thank You for sharing Colorado with us. This funny journey with Ked and Sean was a joy. Kaden Edmond Donegal, Ked for short was like no character I've ever read before. He was truly just human. I'm so glad he found Sean. I really ENJOYED him. He is adorable. Thank You for this touching magnificent journey. It was like a small vacation. I pray for your precious Colorado and pray for the firefighters risking their lives there, like the ones in California. This story is a beautiful escape. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!

I seem to be on a “Bear” hunt lately! And I think this is my first Ginger Bear or would that be a Cinnamon Bear???

Ked, oh you will hear many times (maybe too many!) why this young man goes by that name, has recently moved to Bear Lake to be the new Forest Ranger after finishing college. Bear Lake is a small, close-knit community that tends to keep to itself but that’s all about to change when Ked blows into town.

Ked’s non-stop verbal diarrhea about did me in at first. Don’t get me wrong, I loved his youthful enthusiasm but reading his non-stop babbling made me want to put my fingers across his mouth and tell him to just breathe! When Sean finally got him to focus, with the help of some BDSM, I’m sure the whole freaking town wanted to cheer! I know I did. Speaking of BDSM, I thought there would be more but it was a small part of the story.

I think the townspeople really warmed my heart, especially Millie, Hannah and Dan, with the way they simply “adopted” Ked and made him their own. They truly made this story special.

I will say, this booked seemed like several books put together. You had Ked coming to Bear Lake to learn his job. Next you had all the suspense of the poachers. Then it switched gears and had Ked trying to figure out what made Sean tick so he would like him. Then you had Ked exploring BDSM. Next you had Ked’s life in danger. Then you had Ked and Sean confronting their pasts. Then you had Sean and Ked exploring more of their BDSM relationship. Add in the sub-plots with Hannah and Dan, Millie’s backstory, bringing in another ranger and how Ked would react. There were A LOT of story lines going and I was almost overwhelming but made me want to know more. I know several characters were mentioned briefly, like Karolin, Wolf and Max and are part of upcoming books.

One of the things that did perplex me was the point of view. Most of the book came from Ked. Then, all of a sudden, we were hearing Sean first person and I was looking to see if the author titled the chapter to prepare you. Then, when they went to Texas, it was first Ked, then Sean and then seemed to be a narrator that was telling what was going on. It was very confusing and took me out of the story to figure out who was talking.

I did like this story and really liked the character development of this town and its residents. Looking forward to the next book.

Great first book and first-time read for this author. I will defo be delving into Rain's back library for further reading material.

First off, the descriptions of Bear Lake and it's locale are definitely a place you'd want to visit. The author clearly has a deep affection and love for Colorado...!

This is a tale of two storylines (1) the poachers and (2) Ked and Sean's relationship - and to my mind the poachers storyline is a major interlude from Ked and Sean's intense D/S relationship...

Setting the poachers story to one side - which is a rollercoaster of a ride for Ked (and everyone else involved for that matter), because it's Ked who I want to talk about first.

The first thing you notice about Ked is he talks a mile a minute!! Now for someone with a really good educational background (very rich and over achieving parents) plus a high I Q (?), you'd think he'd be more articulate. Wrong!! Ked rambles, think verbal diarrhoea. However, when it comes to his work or something new, Ked has a razor sharp focus / a single mindedness that immediately made me think that he was on the Autistic Spectrum.

This was bourne out when Ked actively stalked Sean and found out about his secret lifestyle. Ked spent many weeks researching and reading myriad books on the subject, so as not to be caught off guard. Speaking of Sean...

Sean, Army Veteran and former Medic, He saw action in Afghanistan, where something devastating happened to him. This incident had a profound effect on him psychologically. He has PTSD and isn't dealing that well. Being a loner, working as a furniture maker / artisan, he lives the life of a recluse only venturing into Bear Lake for supplies or further afield to service his (particular) sexual needs.

On first meeting, both MCs are instantly attracted to each other, although Sean is very reluctant to act on his feelings, not wanting to be hurt again. Ked on the other hand goes all out to get his man encouraged by some of Bear Lake's residents.

The MCs are polar opposites, Ked with his self-esteem issues and Sean's intense and brooding persona. The dynamic seems to work though and the couple work well together both inside and outside of the bedroom!! Through mutual consent the couple embark on a D/S relationship.

Like Sean, the sexual side of their relationship is loving but intense and at times brutal. But Ked seems to absorb this brutality, soaking it up as Sean doles it out. Ked relishes the beatings more and more and he uses the discipline / punishments he receives to become more grounded and less stressed. This shared aspect to their relationship allows them to make peace with the unresolved parts of their lives: Ked with his parents and Sean with the incident that has haunted him...

Finally, I have to mention some of the larger than life characters who call Bear Lake their home. What a wonderful community to be a part of, everyone looking out for each other and watching each other's backs. I for one would certainly love to be an integral part of that community, especially if there were other bears living there, ginger or otherwise...!

I read this book last month. I am honest, I struggled with the review. I loved a lot but some stuff didn't work for me at all.
First up, I liked Ked, Kaden Edmond Donegal. He cracked me up with his uncontrolled babbling. He is honest to the bone, but he tries to take on the suggestions of the people he interacts with. So he has development in his character.
The book starts pretty slow, introducing a lot of the supporting characters in chapters one to three. Bear Lake is a pretty small community in a mountainous region and home to some pretty eccentric people.

When Ked finally meets Sean, Sean has a calming effect on Ked. But Sean doesn't want a relationship yet. Ked falls in lust with Sean immediately and when he gets rejected he starts trying to find out as much as he can about him and why Sean doesn't want him. He turns quite stalker-ish and some of his methods are illegal, even for a law enforcement officer. The other thing Ked seems to do, pretty much out of the goodness of his heart, is meddling with his new found friends in town. While it seems to work with some, mostly he has to apologise for his rash words or actions to the others.
Sean didn't sit well with me. I loved his back story but the way he is dealing or not dealing with things makes him unlikeable. He is very impatient with Ked when it comes to the lifestyle and in the beginning he is getting hot and cold with Ked, I really felt sorry for Ked. When he has outbursts because of his PTSD he comes across as scary.
What really went against my grain with Sean was the part where he starts to humiliate Ked, even though it is in private. Calling someone a "whore" doesn't sit well with me, it isn't an endearment I would want to hear from my love interest and it isn't turning me on in the slightest. So reading about it makes me feel really uncomfortable.
I have the feeling that Sean doesn't really deserve Ked and I am wondering if it should have been him that needed to work on keeping Ked in his life.
I thought the criminal plot was interesting and the development of it helped the rest of the book along.

This was a big let down for me. A good story with a sexy ginger is a trope I really like, but unfortunately, Sean being a sexy ginger wasn’t enough to hold up this story. I really didn’t care for most of the characters, especially our MCs. Ked was just plain irritating and immature and the Forest Service would likely not send someone so inexperienced to a solo assignment. Sean, our sexy ginger, didn’t sit well with me either. There was just something about him that bothered me and it really came out during his and Ked’s scenes. He was just a bit too controlling, alright he’s Dom, but still, and he had a real sadistic side that made me uncomfortable. I was really put off by some of his actions that, to be were humiliating to Ked, like referring to Ked as “his little whore.”
As for their romance, I didn’t feel it, and barely saw it. Almost all of on-page time together was spent having sex. There were several times when references were made about them not knowing each other very well as of yet, but we weren’t shown them spending a lot of quality time getting to know one another. Every time that seemed to be happening, it quickly turned into another sex scene. I also found it curious that when Ked was first asking folks about Sean, he had indicated that he didn’t have a submissive bone in his body, but then suddenly it’s like he’s auditioning for the part of submissive of the year!
Add in some sloppy writing, timeline inconsistencies, etc., and this, to me, fell flat on its face.

This is a lengthier book than your usual romance story, and probably the bigger amount of words depends on how wordy Ked is. “Lord have mercy, don’t you ever keep your response to less than novel length?” was the outcry of Dan, coworker of Ked just a few days after meeting the petit man. Ked has no mind-mouth filter and he expresses his emotions and thoughts in his rambling speeches, and at the beginning he doesn’t realise that he needs restraints and guidance in order to channel his overwhelming character and find peace of mind and heart. Enter the elusive Sean, the former soldier turned wood carver, who seeks a sub to control and cherish. Add to the mix criminal poachers, nosy friends and town dwellers, and the great forests of Colorado to protect and you have all the elements for an interesting story with quite some heat.

This book is mainly written from Ked’s POV but a few chapters show also Sean’s POV, but you will not know which chapter until you have read the first few pages wondering who is thinking and saying what because there is no indication. There is also no indication when a scene or event ends and the story line jumps to a few days or hours later. And this continuous flow from one moment to a future one is at times quite annoying.

Bear Lake is an interesting little town, full of quirky, salt-of-the-earth characters. I loved picturing the scenery - made me want to run off and live in a little town like that!! I liked the fact that we got some hints into some side characters' back stories - and some of those stories are racy!!

Ked and Sean make a good couple. I really liked Ked, even though he would be tiring to be around. I thought the book overall was a little too long. Some parts I thought were unnecessary to the overall story, so it dragged a little bit. But I was attached enough to the characters that I stuck with it.

I did think that the relationship between Ked and Sean progressed REALLY quickly - it seemed like they went from not knowing each other at all to being completely in love with each other at light-speed. I know the speed of their relationship was part of their whole story, but it would have been a lot more believable if they had spent a tiny bit more time getting to know each other.

The juicy bits are definitely steamy. I don't read a whole lot of BDSM books, this one was probably about as hard-core as I'm comfortable with - and it did push my own limits a little bit. But overall I enjoyed it, and I plan to read the next book when it comes out!

A great start as a very chatty Ked meets the towns people of Bear Lake.
Ked wanted to a be Forrest Ranger and moving to Bear Mountain where his first steps. His first meeting with his trainer, Dan was a funny one Ked sure can talk. I loved Ked he maybe a small little fellow but he’s mighty when he’s in protection mode. Ked wants Sean but can he catch him?. A great story to read although in places scenes are drawn out. Ked loved the towns people and there all a great community together.
This was written in Ked's pov but I needed both to connect with but that’s just me. Includes some danger with poachers, sexy BDSM scenes and much more. Yah watch the trigger warnings some scenes are tough to read if your not used to them.

Ken meets Wolf who owns the cabins and chemistry simmers, but... when he meets or is rescued by Sean the wood carver also ex-army medic its definitely much more🔥. Sean didn’t do relationships even though going to certain clubs miles away for kinky hook-ups.

Ked is relocating, starting a new job as a forest ranger, and super excited about this new chapter, the talkative man is not letting anything get him down. Getting to the small town of Bear Lake, his overeager actions puts him in danger pretty much right off the bat. When he gets saved by the hot bearded ginger Sean, Ked is immediately attracted. But Sean is not giving Ked the time of day. Ked is not going to let that stop him and proceeds to learn anything he can about Sean so as to figure out how to get him to notice him. Will the long winded Ked get his man in the end or will this all be for nothing?

I really struggled with this story, it was so long winded, just about as long winded as Ked is. This really was just an ok story, the naughty bits, danger, and drama were average. I give this 3 stars.

This was a great way to introduce a new series. Ked is chatty!! He’s always felt an affinity with nature and becomes a forest ranger. He moves to Bear Lake. Sean is an artist and needs solitude. But he gets Ked instead. Both men are flawed and are trying to cope with things that happened in their pasts. There was an amazing group of secondary characters in the story line. I really enjoyed the story line and am looking forward to reading more in the series. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. This is a story of Sean a military medic/wood carver/artist and Ked a park ranger. Ked is new in Bear Lake and is learning the ropes from Dan a ranger soon to retire. Sean is out of the military due to injuries sustained while treating a patient and has PTSD. He lives in a secluded area of the forest. Ked gets knocked out by poachers and Sean protects him. Sean is smitten with Ked immediately and Ked also crushes on Sean. There is a lot of action, drama, hilarious situations and steamy interaction. Truly a great read.

An amazingly engrossing story, I was unable to put it down, just had to keep reading, the whole Ranger and Park area was fascinating to learn about and understand. Ked and Sean were Intense characters, backed up by a slew of amusing and interesting friends and neighbours, they all looked out for each other, even at gunpoint. This story would've made a great movie, although they'd have to tone down the filthy sex scenes somewhat. A wonderful, exciting read.

This read was ok but it was really long and I struggled to keep reading to the end. The characters didnt seem to grow on me so I'm not sure id rush to read the next book in the series.

This was a new to me author and the story just felt very wordy and long.

I think my favourite part was how the town became Keds 'family' but overall the story felt mixed up

I was really excited to read this book but it just didn't work for me. Don't get me wrong, the plot is great but the story is wordy and just seems to go on and on. For me I think it needed to be cut down and streamlined a little. I also failed to connect with the characters and struggle at times to follow what was happening amongst so much going on.

There is no interaction between the love interests for more than half of the book. The narrator is annoying. The books badly need an editor. I DNFed before the sex, which while it promised to be kinky, sounded like it was never actually going to happen or go anywhere. Even skimming I couldn't find much to like in this book. >:-C

Great start on a new series. I wasn’t sure what to expect diving in from the excerpt but I ended up with a storyline filled with chatty characters, new beginnings, quirkinesses, and honestly those are great things in a book. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
