Creepy short stories for young readers. The fright factor could have been heightened just a bit as many of the stories seemed just a bit too tame. There's something for everyone but for me the best and most memorable stories were at the beginning and the end while those in the middle felt flat and monotonous. 2.5 stars rounded up.

"Spooky" in every sense of the word. Just not really fitting for my age. Haha.

But this one's fun. The stories were short and interesting. My 10 year-old self would totally dig this. A few of the tales were sad and shocking and you could really learn a lot from the characters. I especially liked the ones with cats in them. (Biased, much?)

Not really a fan of ghosts and supernatural themes but I'll let this one slide because it wasn't too bad. And this is obviously for young people so I don't really have much to say about it.

A perfect gift maybe for people who likes ghostly and creepy reads. This would probably take you just an hour to finish. You know, if you're bored and need a palette change.

This was so much fun and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys MG horror short stories! I see collections frequently compared to the ever-coveted status of Scary Stories, but they rarely live up to the parallel for me; however, Hide and Don't Seek absolutely gave me ALL the Scary Stories vibes, only for a newer, younger audience! I enjoyed every single story and poem in this collection and thought the illustrations were really fun (and occasionally quite creepy). If you think this sounds like something you or a reader in your life would be interested in, I wholeheartedly recommend grabbing a copy!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this review copy in exchange for an honest review!

YES!!! This brought me right back to my childhood--those days where I'd read any "Scary Stories" book I could get my hands on, whether that be Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or its many knock-offs. This was creepy and delightful in every way. I have already recommended it to kids on the Bookmobile I work for, and each have returned the book saying they loved it. Sounds like a home run to me! I can only keep my fingers crossed for a second book.

Thanks to Netgalley for the digital ARC.

Kudos to Rissi for creating a truly dark/creepy/scary anthology of short stories for the middle grade set. Often, books are billed as such but are too mild for young horror fans. In fact, I would argue that many of my 8th grade students will be just as freaked out by these stories as my 6th graders will be.

Among my favorites stories are the title tale, "The Girl and the Crow," and "Once Upon a Time." Although the accompanying illustrations I saw were not finalized, I could tell that Carolina Godina's drawings will augment the creepiness of the text, much like Stephen Gammell's do in the classic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

I'll definitely need to purchase multiple copies for my middle school libraries.

Okay, I originally took this book to listen to something while I try to rid my apartment of huge amounts of shed fur from two very-very fluffy dogs. This takes time, you know.
After 5 or 6 stories I understood there’ll be nothing really scary but I was still interested.
I love stories like these.

Okay, what do we have in the beginning? Spoiler-free, something like that:
1. Lost in the corn
2. Scary doll
3. Send this message further OR ELSE
4. Summer camp is scary
5. Weird secret
6. Worms.
And for me all this is… incredibly hilarious x) I laughed so much while listening to this book!
The Vanisher story reminded me of Vanish for cleaning and that old joke from the 00s about a commercial on a faulty TV: “pshh… Vanish… pshhpshh… will take away all your dirty spots… pshh pshh… and money”.

At some point, I was laughing so hard that I decided to share this with my subscribers but my dog came angry that I was shaking the bed with my laughing, and touched my phone screen with her nose, deleting everything.
True story.

Anyway, overall? I had such a great time. Although there’s nothing scary, the stories are good. Some are cheap creepypasta, others just have weird cliffhangers. Cliffhangers don’t add spookiness on their own.

After some time I understand there’re at most 3-4 stories I can remember: the wormboy one, vanish and a secret one. And the secret one I remembered because when I was retelling it to a friend, as soon as I finished, my mother came and told me, and I quote: “I wanted to hear the ending so much but it’s plain nonsense!”

Anyway,
Read if: you like short creepypasta stories; you want some simple stories where you don’t need to think much; you want something spooky-themes, not really scary.
Do not read if: you want real horror stories or anything thrilling, really; you want a unified plot or at least something connected; you want any closure to your stories.

It’s for kids, you know.

Hi! I wrote this book and had entirely too much fun doing so. It includes twenty spooky stories—some silly, some spine-tingling, some hide-under-the-covers scary. I hope they will make readers shiver, giggle, and shriek. I hope they'll delight and entertain you, and also make you think.

Two summers ago, I wrote the collection’s opening story, about a game of hide-and-seek that never ends, to amuse myself and my nieces. It was a fun way to procrastinate from the work I was supposed to be doing, so I wrote another, and another, and another, playing with not only fears but also formats: One story is told entirely through text messages, another through letters sent home from camp. A few are in verse. One is the script of a play. There’s even a story narrated by a very good dog.

And just wait until you see Carolina Godina's gorgeous and thrilling illustrations.

Hide and Don't Seek is my fourteenth book but the first to be categorized as middle grade (for ages 8 to 12), and I’m excited to meet new readers, reach new classrooms, and share these spooky stories I had so much fun inventing. The night before the book comes out, I’m feeling hopeful—and beneath that, kinda scared. Not about monsters under the bed (my mattress currently lives on the floor so my 13-year-old three-legged dog can reach me when she needs comforting at night), but about...nothingness. About throwing my heart into the air without knowing if the winds will carry it.

There’s so little an author can do for a book, besides write it and love it and wish it the best. But I’m grateful for the chance to sing into the abyss, and I hope a few notes will reach you.

Thanks for reading.

A delightful selection of spooky reads that would terrify any kid or adult looking for a scare. An interesting range of writing modes too, from prose to poetry and some epically creepy illustrations and spooktacular characters.

This was an okay horror anthology. I would say that, despite there being 20 stories in this collection, only a handful were genuinely scary/creepy. And no, the fact that I'm an adult reading a horror anthology geared towards kids DOES NOT excuse how weak some of these stories were. Because--spoiler alert--you CAN make scary horror for young kids that adults can find scary and unnerving as well.

On top of that, the range was all over the place in terms of fright factor. A handful of stories had some legitimately scary and fucked up shit in it, some were creepy and not that scary but I still enjoyed them, but a LOT of them were so dull that I could tell them to a five year old and they wouldn't get scared. And again, I understand that this collection is geared towards kids, but this is now the fifth junior horror collection I've read and it is EASILY the weakest of the bunch. As someone who grew up with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, this was like someone trying to emulate it, but bit off more than they could chew.

Sorry, this was a predominantly negative review, but I want to stress that there were some good stories in here and I do recommend it for kids looking for horror. It's just not as strong as other horror anthologies, and if kids (or adults) are looking for something much scarier, I would recommend "Darkness Creeping" and "Ghost: Thirteen Haunting Tales to Tell". But if you want a quick horror read, this is fine.

Hide and Don't Seek is a spooky middle grade anthology. The audio was a lot of fun and this is definitely a fun book for this age group around Halloween. An anthology tends to be hit or miss for me, so I did enjoy some stories more than others.

Some of the stories in this book were kinda disturbing, some were boring, and others were straight up weird. Like the the ones where some kid barfs up baby worms after eating one and then buries himself in the dirt like a worm like that's gross and nasty please stop...

Whew, that was a doozy! The first story had me worried that this was going to be a fairly young, somewhat predictable collection, but most of the stories actually ended up being pretty unsettling. A good many of the illustrations made me tense up, and a persistent rustling behind me actually put me on edge while I read. (No, I did not find the source of the rustling. Yes, I am at least 27% concerned about it.)

This took me right back to the days when I’d read the Scary Stories trilogy in the middle of the day because the illustrations were just that disturbing and I didn’t want to make direct eye contact with them for any considerable length of time. With a few of the images in Hide and Don’t Seek, I had to hold the book at an odd angle to finish reading a page without looking too long at the pictures. That’s a compliment if I’ve ever given one! I loved the inclusiveness. Also: Good Boy is Best Boy, and I hope he’s doing okay.

I will ever-so-slightly complain that I was promised laughter and did not receive it, but perhaps that was a red herring so I’d just have to read the whole thing and sit with my shivers (and that darn rustling behind me what is that). Or perhaps it contains a special brand of kid humor that will reveal itself to kids and only kids. Time will tell.

Overall: spooky, spooky, spooky. A perfect way to start the Halloween season, even if it’s a bit early. (Is the rustling behind me autumn leaves? But it’s only August and I’m inside my house!)

Some of these stories were really interesting and truly creepy. Others were just kind of random. Overall, I definitely would have been spooked by these if I read them when I was younger.

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS
This anthology had many great spooky ideas, but the execution was sadly lacking! I almost wish that there had been fewer stories, so the author could have fleshed out the remaining ones more. The stories were a hit or miss for me. Almost all of them felt severely underdeveloped, ended quite abruptly, and left me with more questions than answers. I feel like the stories could have been more impactful if we fully utilized the concept and got some answers instead of a vague end.

I listened to the audiobook with my son, and we both enjoyed some stories more than others. It is a fun short story collection. I am starting to see why many readers still love MG horrors - there is a nostalgic and timeless quality that makes them engaging even to adult readers.

This book was received as an ARC from HarperCollins Children's Books - Quill Tree Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book brought back to many memories when I read the original Scary Stories in elementary school and all of the reactions of all my classmates on how ridiculously scary they were. However in Hide and Don't Seek, these were far more modern and more creative. Among the young men and those who like Scary Stories, this book will be perfect especially read on Halloween. I know we have a lot of young readers looking for more Scary Stories that are age appropriate and like the original Scary Stories, this book will be perfect for school libraries for a special Halloween unit.

We will consider adding this title to our JFiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

-The details and story telling are pure gold.
-I absolutely love how each story is different - not only just the storyline but the format in which it is told. I must see the physical copy of this book when it comes out!
-A middle-grade horror must-read. I would not call myself a prolific horror reader so some of these stories even had me a little spooked!

This was a pretty scary but ultimately uneven collection. The poetry was mostly not good, and while I loved a lot of the framing devices, some (like the play) didn't work. That being said, the stories that were scary were genuinely unsettling, which is always a tough balance to strike in middle grade horror.
