Perron Manor—a place evil calls home

Sisters Sarah and Chloe inherit a house they could never have previously dreamed of owning. It seems too good to be true.

Shortly after they move in, however, the siblings start to notice strange things: horrible smells, sudden drops in temperature, as well as unexplainable sounds and feelings of being watched.

All of that is compounded when they find a study upstairs, filled with occult items and a strange book written in Latin.

Their experiences grow more frequent and more terrifying, building towards a heart-stopping climax where the sisters come face to face with the evil behind Perron Manor. Will they survive and save their very souls?

Haunted: Perron Manor is Book 1 in the Haunted series, which continues with Haunted: Devil's Door

I am an author with a huge love of horror.

Of course, other genres float my boat as well; Sci-Fi, Thrillers, pretty much any Dark Fiction, but Horror is what I call home.

My first novel, Horror in the Woods, was released on in May 2017, and the second, The Demonic, on the the following July hitting multiple best seller lists. Since then, I have authored a number of horror novels that have terrified fans for the past few years.

This was one scary book!

Haunted-House-flashing-lights-gif.gif

A little backstory:

Sisters Chloe and Sarah are left Perron Manor in an inheritance after their Uncle passes away. Chloe with her husband, Andrew and their baby Emma along with Sarah all decide to live together in the manor as they figure it would be a great opportunity for all of them, so they move in. Chloe though has been in the house when she was little with her parents, but bad things happened in the house at that time and she doesn't remember everything that took place.

Little do they know that the manor is known to be haunted as none of them believe in such things as ghosts and hauntings. Paranormal investigator, David Ritter shows up on their doorstep letting them know the manor is haunted and that he would like to know if they would let him do an investigation. They do not let him in the manor and they tell him to leave as they do not believe in those kind of things.

The manor starts to become active though with knocks, whispers, apparitions, shadows, and cold drafts. The sisters along with Andrew don't have an explanation for the events, but they stay in denial about the manor being haunted until something happens to one of the sisters that cannot be explained. When things go from bad to worse, Chloe reaches out to David Ritter for help as the family does not know what to do or what can be done to stop the haunting. The manor wants their souls and it will do anything to get them.

Do the sisters and Andrew make it out of the house? Why is the manor haunted? What is haunting the manor? What happens to this family when the haunting escalates? No spoilers here as you will just have to read the book!

Thoughts:

This book was one scary ride and author, Lee Mountford slowly builds up the haunting and spooky atmosphere all the way through the book then lowers the boom as things escalate in the manor to the point that I would stay up to the early morning hours reading it!

Author, Lee Mountford is able to weave the story so well that the aspects of what the characters see and feel can be "seen and felt" as well while reading the book. If the characters hear whispers then the reader will hear whispers and if the characters see a ghost then the reader will see it. Everything is brought to life on the pages of the book. This was my second reread of this book as I am wanting to reread the whole series once again to get my spook meter running!

There is also a demonic theme weaved into the story which emanates from the pages when the haunting becomes more intensified.

I am looking forward to rereading the rest of the series once again so that I can surround myself in the haunted realm! Giving this one five "Scary Boo Demon" stars!

Highly Recommend!

I won't lie; this is a fantastic book for me!

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this title; the pacing was excellent, the story well written and easy to visualize (Sometimes too much so xD), and the length was spot on.

The horror aspects are built very well, serving as mini climaxes that slowly upped the ante each time until the finale. Again, Lee hits that perfect spot between tension, story, and background.

The multiple perspectives worked very well, serving rather than hindering the story.

As I said, I loved this book thoroughly and the horror it provided. Glad I own the rest of the series and the 4th as well.

Creepy, chilling, eerie... and the beat goes on! In other words, I am still only in the shallows of this series.
This one left me a bit open-mouthed so, on to the next! Can it get any more uncomfortable tension-wise? The answer here is always, “Yey-uss!”

OMG! Was this written just for me, the "Ghost Story Junkie:? Quiet possibly....and I hope this author is planning a 50 or so book series here. It certainly clicked all the reasons that I love ghost stories. It begins with "Britain's most Haunted House"...Perron Manor...in the present time. The history of this mansion goes way back to its very construction. There were periods of dormancy followed by absolutely horrific events. The last tragedy recorded there was when Chloe was only six years old, and was staying there as her parents helped her Uncle and his partner, Marcus. Chloe and Sarah weren't worried after all "....the past can't hurt you"...right? The fact that her family was the ONLY survivor has completely slipped her mind. So Chloe and her sister Sarah move in along with Chloe's husband and small child. ". . . Back to Devil's House . . . " Now the fun truly begins. The parts that dealt with the house itself and its sordid, bloody history were in a word, "captivating"... to say the least. "This house is special. It is, I believe, alive.". If only they knew...but they are by this time beyond any reasonable resemblance of clear thought or reasonable actions. The best thing they could have done was throw a match in a big puddle of gasoline and RUN. I'm not going to say much more about the outcome but let's just say the reader might want to start checking windows and doors and make sure you have plenty of light. I don't scare easily but part of this were almost heart stopping.

There really is and was a Perron family and a mansion in, I believe, Manchester England. The house has some disturbing events that have occurred in it and was the setting for the movie "The Conjuring" …that is actually rooted in a horrifying true experience of Ed and Lorraine Warren. I'm not saying that any of the book or the movie are based on actual occurrences...but who knows? As the bard, William Shakespeare said "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Supernatural Scandal! Famed Investigator Ignored! "Well, I tried to warn them. I really did! But did they listen? No, (shrugs) what can you do with the modern sceptic?" - D. Ritter - The Paranormal Investigators Chanticleer.

In many ways this is an excellent book. The characters of Chloe & Sarah, and the house itself are developed well over the course of the story, and for the majority of the story, the pacing is exactly on point for this story's subject matter.

There are a number of scenes that are highly affective giving me numerous chills and rolling goosebumps over my skin. I was left one evening doing an extra 'perimeter check,' of my home - just because ... I was reading this book.

These are all really good signs and why I'm happy to recommend this book to other readers, however I haven't given the book 5 stars, instead I have given it a worthy 4 stars.

Why drop a star - the ending, but not the denouement - the denouement left me with more chills... however the ending left me cold - in the worst possible way I stopped caring about the characters because they started making completely bone-headed out-of-character decisions, and then there is Sarah, heavily foreshadowed as falling under the malign influence of the house, just isn't during the ending when I expected that foreshadowing to be revealed, and for no special reason I could see... geez this was anti-climatic.

Which for this reader was a crying shame, as the story promised a lot more for at least 89% of the book (and from 96% onwards...)

Recommended. 4 'Spooky Chills & Goosebumps,' stars.

HAUNTED: Perron Manor is Book 1 in the Haunted series by Lee Mountford. This story takes place in "Britain's most Haunted House"--Perron Manor--in the present time. The history of this mansion goes back to its very construction, with periods of dormancy followed by horrific events.

When we begin, Chloe and her younger sister Sarah, have inherited the Manor from their reclusive Uncle Vincent. The last tragedy recorded there was when Chloe was only six years old, and was staying there as her parents helped her Uncle and his partner, Marcus.

". . . the past couldn't hurt them."

Chloe's family were the only survivors.

Having no recollection of anything during that time, Chloe doesn't hesitate to urge her husband to move there, along with their young child, and co-heir sister.

". . . Back to Devil's House . . . "

I will admit, I felt the "connection" between the characters was forced somehow, and many of their conversations/actions just didn't feel . . . authentic. . . to me.

However, while I had a difficult time with these characters and their motivations, the atmosphere and history of the Manor captured my undivided attention. The scenes that dealt with the house itself and its sordid history were mesmerizing, to say the least, and some of the minor characters brought more interest and mystery to it.

"This house is special. It is, I believe, alive."

By the end of the novel, the characters were starting to grow on me, and some scenes with them were more "believable" than they were in the first three-quarters or so.

". . . Once you saw what was behind the veil, how could you ever unsee it? . . . "

Overall, while the characters didn't do much for me in the beginning, the Manor itself certainly did! The ending scenes made quite an impression on me, and I've already preordered the next installment.

Recommended.

When two sisters inherit a huge house, they are ecstatic. Sarah and Chloe see Perron Manor as an opportunity to improve their lives. They move in....and quickly find out that the old house is a very scary place. Things start out small...odd smells, weird sounds, cold spots. But things quickly escalate and become much more dangerous.

I listened to the audio book version of this story. Narrated by Hannibal Hills, the audio is just over 8 hours long. Hills does a great job of voice acting. I enjoyed his reading of the prequel, Inside: Perron Manor, and his performance was just as scary this time! As for the story, I enjoyed it from start to finish. The characters were a bit annoying at times and their decisions were total crap....but I don't think I would make great choices in a similar situation either!

Haunted house stories are favorites for me, so I loved this book. Definitely reading more of Lee Mountford's books. There are five books in the Haunted series so far...so I can't wait to read the rest!

Very boring couple of first chapters of the book basically a group of teenagers a mother and father inherit a manor in the first 8 chapters not much happens a lot of dialogue that's about it there's no WOW Factor. Disappointing considering it's supposed to be a haunted house story.

Strictly related to audiobook - petition for male narrators to stop pitching their voice into grandma register for female characters.

A himbo, his wife - a bimbo, and her sister - a dumbo. And a damn baby. In a demon-haunted mansion. Some very very vague background story of a long history of violence. And some vague occult stuff in the attic. And some vague occult book. Most of the dumbos and their damn baby survive. It kinda all goes nowhere.

This book was phenomenal. Super creepy. I read it in the dark at night and was genuinely terrified. I had this one on my TBR for a while and regret waiting so long to read it. Will be reading the next one immediately.

There were lots of creepy moments in this. And I really did like those. But pffff, these people were so unlikable.

I had such a hard time enjoying reading about Chloe, her husband Andrew and Chloe’s sister, Sarah. The way they kept saying that anyone believing in ‘weird things’ had to be completely insane... Even when Chloe explained everything she had seen, they still decided she was either crazy or lying.

I was intrigued enough to start book 2, but when I found out the entire book is about what happened in Perron Manor when Chloe was 6 years old, I stopped. I don’t enjoy reading a book that’s set in the past. It’s like reading one big flash back.

So while this had potential, I don’t think I can read more about Chloe, Andrew and Sarah.

** Edited as review is now live on Kendall Reviews! **

One of the most common plot points or tropes for haunted house stories, especially those involving sprawling mansions, is the one where a family inherits it from a relative who has passed away. Typically the relative is one who has been a recluse or distanced themselves from the rest of the family over the years, so that not much, if anything, is known about them.

This idea has been tackled by the literary giants as well as the baby-faced writers. It’s either something that’ll either excite you or turn you off.

So, keep that in mind, if you’re thinking of diving into Lee Mountford’s newest, ‘Haunted: Perron Manor.’

What I liked: Perron Manor is a massive house on an acreage near a small town. The house has history. Known history. In fact, so well known, books and paranormal investigators have all weaved its way into the lore. The story itself follows Sarah and Chloe, sisters who’ve inherited Perron Manor after their uncle passed away. They move out to the old property, excited to be owners of a mansion, even if it needs some work to update it. Chloe has an infant daughter, Emma as well as her mildly disgruntled husband Andrew.

At first, all is calm, but then odd things begin to happen. Doors opened that were left closed, knocks and bangs on the doors. An odd figure spotted on a camera.

Throughout this, Mountford gives us some great character depth. We learn a bit about Chloe’s history with the manor as well as Sarah’s military background and her struggles. I enjoyed how we got to know these characters as humans and how the natural banter between them.

The house itself is a major character. I wish Mountford had included some floor plans, as I’d have loved to see the layout. His descriptions are fantastic, but as a fan of stories that involve mansions like this, I often enjoy having a visual reminder.

Chloe and Sarah go through a great transformative arc, both individually, as well as siblings and the added dependent (Emma), makes for some fantastically tense moments.

What I didn’t like: I think the toughest thing going in for me personally, was that this is part of a series. Knowing that I didn’t expect to get all the answers, but I found I didn’t get ANY answers. We got hints and bits of what had happened and maybe why the things were occurring, but I think, personally, too much was left unanswered as a draw for readers to dive into book two. As an example (spoiler-free) a discovery is made. A book. Not once do we hear about any attempt at research being done on the book. We do get an antiquities dealer, who may or may not return to the fold in the future, but otherwise nothing.

We also get some characters brought in along the way that I felt we learned too much about with not enough pay off from them. Again, they may very well return down the road, but otherwise, it came off as a lot of space taken up for other characters, instead of moving the story along.

Why you should buy this: I enjoyed this read. I’d peg it at a middle of the road haunted house story for me. I wanted to know what was happening, but it took a bit to get the ball rolling and ultimately, the pay off at the end works but was more of a set up for the next release. Mountford does deliver some really eerie scenes, so rest assured you’ll be creeped out, but for me personally, I wanted more finality of certain things and a less open ending.

For fans of haunted house stories, this will tick all of the boxes for what makes you love that narrative.

It was ok. It was really slow and I didn't really like any of the MC's. It was also in my opinion, really predictable and there was way to much going on at once. I notice its a series so maybe more gets explained as we go on. I'll probably try book 2 just to see if it gets any better.

Wow! I loved every moment of this book!
Honestly, the whole thing had me hooked from beginning to end. Not only was it very creepy and descriptive, but the characters were all very likeable and I loved how different chapters consisted of the different perspectives of both Chloe and her sister Sarah. It made me understand each character individually and I found myself wanting to believe each of their sides, whether that be skepticism, belief or just in denial. The end actually had me feeling kind of sad and absolutely wanting more answers!
I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in this series!

Predictable and maddening

Would not recommend this at all. How many insanely ridiculous incidents need to happen before someone finally acknowledges maybe it's not my imagination??? That's just the beginning of the madness.

Book 1 in the terrifying Haunted House Series PERRON MANOR, HAUNTED: PERRON MANOR is not as unremittingly scary as the Prequel INSIDE PERRON MANOR: THE INVESTIGATION, which recounted the horrifying multiple histories of the land, later house and gardens, known as Perron Manor: a history non-stop in its bloodthirsty sacrifices and unending tragedies. I was so eager for Book 1 that I forgot I shouldn't read at night alone, especially not on a night with intermittent high wind gusts....and HAUNTED: PERRON MANOR scared the living daylights out of me. Talk about Jump Scares! Talk about Implacability! Writing this review on a bright sunshiny morning and remembering CERTAIN scenes, I am chilled all over and can feel my hair turning white! Scared me senseless! Hurry up, Book 2, I know Perron Manor isn't finished with us yet!!

A Kindle Unlimited read - thankfully.

Uncle leaves a mansion to his two nieces. The house is haunted not only by ghosts but controlled by a demon. One of the nieces is married and (of course) has a baby daughter.

The four of them (nieces, husband & daughter) move in with the idea of making it a family home. This is driven by the mother.

Mother starts seeing ghosts and ends up dead, with her soul trapped in the house forever. Sister pledges to release her soul and that's the hook to get you to read the second in the series.

A predictable horror story. It didn't scare me or entice me to read the next. On the plus side, it was fast-paced and only took a few hours to read. Disappointing all told.

There were a lot of gaps in the story line, and I wish more history of the minor characters and events would have been shared. I think it would have helped make me care a little more about what happened to the main protagonists. I suspect that may occur in the rest of the books from the series, but I’m not sure I’ll be reading those just yet.

All the action was saved for the last 15 percent of the book. One of the sisters showed signs of a mild possession, but it was never addressed. The husband was oblivious, and the other sister experienced most of the spooky happenings - apparently because of her history with the house as a child. But what were the details of that history? It was never shared.

It was a fairly good book, though, a good 3 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ .

Maybe haunted house books aren’t for me, or maybe this one just wasn’t good…I’m not sure. I could see this being a decent horror movie I’d watch but in book form, it didn’t do it for me. The book was so slow, nothing really happened until 80% into the book. The character were not likable at all, there constant dismissal that the house could possibly be haunted was honestly annoying.

Three stupid adults and a damn baby in a house with poorly explained ghosts and a loose plot. The ending was entertaining, the gory description of everything was fun to read but other than that, nothing appealed to me about this book.

An intense and spooky tale!

This was a haunted house story pushed to its limits. The genre does not get better than this and I can't wait to read the sequels. Ghosts, demonic possession, Satanism and Hell House reborn, all in one story. Absolutely brilliant!

Brilliant and Gripping

Gripped me right away and held me as captive as Perron Manor holds its victims. So, of course, being either eager or foolish, I’m heading straight for book two in this haunting series. Lee Mountford has just joined my list of fave writers for 2021 … provided he doesn’t give me a heart attack, lols.

Hodnocení: 4,5/5 ✩
Mám ráda knihy, kterým se nedá upřít atmosféra, strach, tajemno, nadpřirozené jevy, duchové, temnota, kouzla a kletby, a ani trocha toho šílenství.

I honestly had a hard time getting into this one. It took me until about halfway through to get invested in the story and the characters. I wish there was a little more explanation and background to the characters. Overall, I enjoyed this read. It was definitely not something I would have picked for myself, but that is what I enjoy about book club. 🙂
