A Laugh-Out-Loud Cozy Mystery in which the Cat is Boss
My name is Tawny Bigford. I’m 35, single, and I love hot showers. Seriously, all I wanted was a hot shower to start my day off right, but when I went to confront my landlady about the broken plumbing, I wound up talking to her corpse instead.
Now everyone thinks I’m to blame for her murder—not the best way to make an impression on the new neighbors, let me tell you. But how can I prove I’m innocent when I know practically nothing about the woman I supposedly killed?
Especially not the fact that she was the official Beech Grove Town Witch. Her former boss—a snarky black cat named Mr. Fluffikins—says I have to fill her vacated role until the real killer can be caught and brought to justice.
So, whether I like it or not, I’ve just been recruited to the Paranormal Temp Agency. Now I need to solve my landlady’s murder, figure out how to wield my newly granted powers, and maybe even find a way to fit in around here.
Molly Fitz is the quirky, cozy mystery pen name of USA Today bestselling author, Melissa Storm. And while she can't technically talk to animals, she and her doggie best friend, Sky Princess, have deep and very animated conversations as they navigate their days. Add to that, five more dogs, a snarky feline, comedian husband, and diva daughter, and you can pretty much imagine how life looks in the Casa de Fitz.
Molly lives in a house on a high hill in the Michigan woods and occasionally ventures out for good food, great coffee, or to meet new animal friends.
My first impression when I started this book was that it was intended for maybe a 13 year old. The plot was just too corny to be true, and I didn't like Mr. Fluffikins. I also didn't like the way the PTA apparently bossed Tawny around without telling her exactly what was going on. The book got better as it went along, but I really doubt that I will be reading any more unless I happen to come across a free copy of the book.
Honestly, I’ve picked this series only because of the ‘35 old, single female main character’. I thought it would be nice to read something like that. How wrong I was… The issue is not with the female MC, but with the cat-boss. That’s supposed to be an adult (or at least YA) cozy mystery, but… Mr. Fluffikins? What? Really? The whole story is not a LOL cozy mystery, but more like WTF cozy mystery. The Cat is just bossing around with some poor grown-up human (chosen for what damn reason?), who behaves like a child. No world development at all, just thrown some pieces of everything here and there, no proper magic system, no interesting mystery case…
Tawny Bigford, new to Beech Grove, just wanted her hot shower. However, when she goes to confront her landlady about the broken hot water heater, she gets more than she planned on. From romance writer to neophyte temp hire as "town witch" in one day? Yea, right.
Hired by a Mr. Fluffikins, who happens to be the head of the local PTA, Tawny finds herself in more than hot water, but you'll have to read this truly fun mystery to find out what happens.
Let's face it, Molly Fitz has to be one fun woman to be the writer she is. What an imagination! Each story she creates has a bit of a magical touch, and enough laughs to spit-take your coffee. Highly recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book as a gift from the author and chose to read and review it]
My only complaint is that this book was too short! I needed something not less than 200 pages but... well, I'm reading a Molly Fitz book so I guess that's sort of expected. I'm gonna move onto the sequel as soon as I am mentally available to read an enjoyable cozy mystery.
A writer who does what she wants because she can afford to, Tawny Bigford now lives in a little house on the property of her landlord in the town of Beech Grove. She loves where she lives but hates the fact the hot water heater is constantly running cold and her complaints go unanswered. Tawny has finally had it and literally stumbles over the landlord's dead body when she goes to her house. After being taken in for so-called questioning by the police, she has a run-in with a talking cat. On top of that, she is temporarily the new town witch. The adventure begins and does not finish until the end. This is the first book in a new series and I honestly loved it. Great characters and a magical world. Cannot wait to read the next one. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and looking forward to the next book in the Paranormal Temp Agency Series.
Witch for Hire by Molly Fitz is the first in a cozy series featuring a Paranormal Temp Agency and a fun character: Tawny. This was a quick read that had me laughing out loud. Some of the "magical" elements weren't really explained or not very detailed, but I didn't mind that. I didn't really need to know how it all worked, I was still able to enjoy the story. Tawny is in her mid-30s and that made it easy for me to relate to her. I liked that she was loyal to her newfound magical friends and wanted to help them even though she wasn't sure entirely what was happening or how, as a "normie", she could even help. Overall, I liked this magical escape and I look forward to reading the second book in the series.
I bought this Kindle ebook to read for a ParaCozy book club. I'm voluntarily sharing my honest opinion on the book and I am not influenced in any way.
A highly enjoyable paranormal read, love this new series by Molly Fitz. Tawny ends up finding her landlady body and being accused of her murder. Soon she finds out there is more to her former landlady than she knew, she was the town witch. Forced to take her place temporarily can Tawny help find and stop the killer before they strike again.
This was a cute, fast-paced, easy read. I liked the story and the character development. It's the first in a series, so I'll definitely try the next book.
Oh my goodness I loved this! A secret paranormal society, stray cats = magical field agents and a possible budding romance all rolled into a cozy mystery? 100% yes. Immediately starting book 2!
I love all the Molly Fitz Pet Detective books and I was sure I would love this one. But I didn't. I can't pinpoint just exactly what was wrong with it. It just didn't seem to really ever catch my enthusiasm and I thought the story was kind of boring. I am very sorry, Ms. Fitz. There are some Pet Detective books I haven't read and I'll go back to those.

I read about two hundred books a year and this is only the third or fourth I haven't enjoyed.
Witch For Hire is a delightfully madcap introduction to the Paranormal Temp Agency series. The fact is that I’m not going to feel comfortable saying much more than what you can read in the Cover Description Blurb for it would be so very easy to let spoilers slip – but then, that blurb certainly should capture your attention.
Tawny is relatively new in town and as a writer can pretty much set her own schedule and budget. She’s renting a small house on the same property as her landlord who occupies the main house. Her landlord is very much a grumpy hands-off, don’t bother me kind of woman. Tawny makes no excuses for the fact that she loves her hot showers, it’s how she wakes up and at times how she figures out her stories… until the hot water heater decided that, oh, about five minutes was enough hot water and then froze her out. Today she’s not going to take it anymore and heads directly from her freezing shower to her landlady’s house… to discover a very cold, very dead body. And soon after, a very handsome police officer believing she’s a killer. A great introduction to a handsome man… not.
This is the beginning of Tawny’s experience with the weird, odd, and paranormal aspects of this small town. And a talking cat. Yes. A talking cat who is the boss of everyone she’s about to meet.
It turns out that her landlady was the town witch, and was murdered for her powers which would have transferred to the person closest to her at her death – since they believed, at first, that Tawny killed her well then she has the power now. But, no. Not a witchy twitch anywhere near Tawny. Now, this council of paranormals has to find the killer, contain a witch’s powers, and deal with a non-witch in their midst who should not even know who they really are. Mr. Fluffikins – the cat boss – has a plan and grants Tawny temporary powers to help in the investigation, basically taking the witch’s spot on council and protecting the town for now. But the danger is far from over… as you will soon discover.
I had fun with Witch For Hire. We meet a quite unique group of characters, watch an investigation take place with all kinds of complications, and sit back while enjoying Tawny’s particular brand of sass and snark. I laughed quite a bit and scratched my head at times in a bit of a puzzle. It’s not hard to figure out who the villain is but it’s not handed to you either. I’m looking forward to my next visit in Psychic For Hire which is due out in December of 2020.
Molly Fitz is back with a brand new cozy mystery series and book one in that series, Witch for Hire: Paranormal Temp Agency has me hooked. In all honesty, I have to confess that, as a rule, I’m really not a fan of the cozy mystery genre. Molly’s books became the exception to that rule after I was asked to read and review the first book in her Pet P.I. series. It was the protagonists in her tales that won me over. Her talking cats captured my heart as they will the heart of any real cat person.
Witch for Hire: Paranormal Temp Agency debuted at the right time with Halloween being right around the corner. I mean, the real protagonist in this wonderful little read is Mr. Fluffikins, a black cat that talks and the leader of the local coven. What’s more Halloween than a black cat? Like with all of Molly’s cozy mysteries featuring talking, furry protagonist, Witch for Hire: Paranormal Temp Agency, is an enjoyable, fast-paced read.
Witch for Hire: Paranormal Temp Agency begins with Tawny walking into her landlady Lily Haberdash’s house and tripping over her dead body, which is sprawled out on the floor right in front of the door. The dead woman, the local Beech Grove Town witch. While trying to recover from this gruesome surprise, Tawny is discovered by Barnes, a cop who, as it turns out, is the coven’s liaison with the police department. Tawny thinking that she was being taken to the police station is taken to the Paranormal Temp Agency instead, where she meets Mr Fluffikins and is recruited by him to replace the deceased witch until her real murderer is apprehended.
Like with all Molly Fitz books, the plot twists come fast one right behind another, taking this story in directions you would never suspect. The surprises they present keeps you turning the pages like you were an assault rifle with the fire selector set to full-auto. Fortunately your assault rifle is like a six shooter in those old-time westerns, the six-shooters that never ran out of ammunition.
This is a fun start to what is going to be an interesting series containing talking cats, witches, angles and mystery. The character are unique and some what special. The story did seem short or I just couldn't put it down until I finished it (not sure which). I wasn't quite sure why the main character went along with everything that was happening without putting up to much resistance or at least complaining but glad that she do to along with it as it lead to some funny situations. The mystery was different from the normal run of the mill, in the fact that you knew who the killer was and why but don't worry there is still a mystery involved in the form of what was going to happen next and to the main character. Looking forward to the next book. Tawny Bigford moves into a new home and a new town only to find out that not everything is as it seem in the quiet town of Beech Grove. Putting up with food showers is one thing but being accused of the murder of your landlady is something else. Especially as the dead lady is the town witch and who ever kills her then receives her powers. Arrested and dragged to the police station is not the best way to get introduced to the other residents but then again finding out the lady's relatives might just be out to kill you because they think you are the owner of the powers isn't either. Bait has a whole new meaning for Tawny now but can she a mere mortal help the witches catch the killer and get the magic back to the rightful owner of heir?I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
WITCH FOR HIRE is the first book in the Paranormal Temp Agency series. These will need to be read in the order of release. This is a fantastic start to a new paranormal cozy-mystery series.
The cat is the town boss…. Well, why not? They know they are in charge wherever they are anyway. Just ask them. Mr. Fluffikins has assigned Tawny as the temporary Town Witch when she stumbles on the landlady/previous witch’s murder.
Don’t try to drink anything while reading this. You’ll spit whatever you have in your mouth all over your screen. This new town, its inhabitants, and the concepts of this new world and how it hides within the normal world is fun.
Now that Tawny knows about magic and has had a taste, how can she possibly return to her old normal? Just enjoying a hot shower won’t be enough to satisfy her any more!
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: WITCH FOR HIRE Series: Paranormal Temp Agency #1 Category /Genre: Paranormal Cozy Mystery Recommended for: 14+ due to adult content Grammar/editing: book received as an unedited ARC / errors excused Received from: Melissa Storm
This was a cute cozy mystery involving, of all things, a Paranormal Temp Agency, with a cat named Mr. Fluffikins as the lead, and an interesting group of town members who fill various rolls to keep the witching of the town under wraps from the "normies" in town.
Tawny (Tawna Bigford), a newly divorced 35-year old author, is new in town and living in the guesthouse of Mrs. Haberdash, the local Town Witch. When she goes to confront her landlord about the lack of hot water she finds her dead and is suddenly pulled into an investigation into finding her killer. I enjoyed the "temporary" witch magic that she is given while helping the PTA and I liked some of the PTA group itself, such as Parker Barnes (the police liaison) and Mr. Fluffikins (the talking cat and leader of the group) and enjoyed the back and forth banter. Everything moved fairly fast and it was a bit hard to follow some of the craziness that ensued.
If you're looking for a nice, clean cozy mystery I think you'd probably enjoy this new series by Molly Fitz. I received a free copy of the story in exchange for my honest opinion.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Interesting premise I just didn't click with any of the characters.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Series/Sequencing Style: 1st in a dynamic series, can be read as standalone, but recommended as a series in order understanding series types: dynamic, static, anthology - source 1, source 2
Review/Notes I think "cozy" mysteries aren't really my thing. This was corny, kinda lame honestly, and somehow sounded quite young or amateur or something. Pacing was weird, probably because it was a short story. Read the second one back-to-back with this hoping it would get more interesting, but it wasn't really worth it. Light, silly stories that cozy mystery fans might still enjoy.

Witch for Hire Is book #1 in the Paranormal Temp Agency series by Molly Fitz.
Tawny Bigford just wanted a hot shower in the morning, but the hot water was not working. She went to her landlady’s home and found her dead. That was just a start to the craziness.
I listened to the audio version of this book. I give this 3.5 and round up since it is the first in the series.
It was a cute, quick story that was a good introduction to the series. There were gaps like where her feelings about a particular character changed and there really wasn’t an explanation. I found Tawny’s attitude in the beginning to be off putting but she was becoming more likable towards the end. I look forward to reading more of the series.
I thought the narration was fine.
I received an advanced audio copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I just finished reading the start of this new series and found the caracters so vibrant, intreageing and down right fabulous .the mystery itself enthralling with its twists and turns full of surprises and humor. I couldn't set it aside even though it was late and time to turn in I needed to find out what happened to the main caracters as well as the others.IF you're like me and enjoy a good clean para cozey mystery with stellar caracters and more than one mystery after another you'll absolutely will not want to miss out on "Witch for Hire "Molly Fitz is a writer of high caliber that draws you into her mystery's with a few short words then keeps you enthralled from start to finish so aquier it now so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 😀🙄Kat
Tawny is a writer who lives frugally so she can do what she wants. She recently moved to the small town of Beech Grove and is living in a cottage with serious deficiencies, so she goes to the landlady to complain. Too late, the landlady is dead at Tawny's feet, literally. She barely gets back up before the police show up to take her in for murder. Not a good way to start the day, and it gets worse. As she says, "I'd just discovered a murder, been kidnapped, and then offered a job by a talking cat. How much weirder could this day get?" Plenty weird, and that's the fun of this book. She's now a worker for the Paranormal Temp Agency and filling in for the murdered town witch. There's plenty of places that this series can go and I can't wait to see where it ends up.
First of all, it is closer to a novella than a regular book. I finished most of it in about two hours. I genuinely wonder if the author has some serious self esteem issues, because she doesn't seem to have a problem with writing the character as someone constantly being bullied. You find out sort of toward the end that she was being bullied for her own good or her own protection, but it was painful to watch. There still wasn't any decent explanation to what was happening in the story to make it worth wanting to read the next one.
Her publisher or friends should definitely have told her that she needed to add more meat to the story to make it feel like the reader will really understand what is happening. The book's story takes place over the course of about 30 hours roughly.
I was super excited to read this book because I liked the premise behind it, but as I was reading the story, it became apparent to me that this didn't really read like a cozy mystery at all. Where were the suspects? Where was the investigating? IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. This book was so focused on the magic part of it that it didn't feel like a mystery - the sleuth even says this at one point in the book. Nevertheless, I kept reading though, because I was curious to see how it ended, but I think I just kept getting more confused about what was actually happening? I think this book will be a one-time read for sure, and I'm probably not going to pick up any others. Just wasn't my cup of tea this time.
I wish that I would've had a hard copy of this book instead of listening to the audiobook, because there was just so much extra information in the story that didn't need to be there at all except for word count. The main character seems very flighty because of all the miscellaneous information she talks about. It doesn't seem that this was the author's intent, because the character's behavior is pretty straightforward.
The other characters are hard to pin down, because the main character's perspective is so fractured. I like the premise of the story, but there's no cohesive storyline that gets resolved. In fact, not much gets resolved by the end of the book at all.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Tawny Bigford is new in the town of Beech Grove. When she goes to confront her landlord about the lack of hot water one morning she stumbles over the lady's dead body. That soon leads her into a world of magic that she never knew existed as she's told that she's the new town witch.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and I honestly loved it. It's first in a new series and is a magnificent start. It's full of humor and intrigue and will draw you in you in from the beginning. It's well-written with wonderful characters and a fantastic world. I'm really looking forward to the next book.
Witch for Hire: A Laugh-Out-Loud Cozy Mystery in which the Cat is Boss. This is the first book in the Paranormal Temp Agency series.
We all know and have to agree that cats rule the roost. But when you are a witch and your boss is named Mr. Fluffikins, how do you deal with that? Just do your best not to laugh and try to find out who murdered your predecessor. This book is a lot of fun to read and has wonderfully quirky characters, murder, mystery, and magic. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series. I read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book with no obligation.
This is not your typical paranormal tale. The main character is not paranormal. Tawny is an unwitting Normal who stumbles into a murder and subsequently discovers her small town is managed by a group of folks and their feline leader who are all paranormals. The story is delightfully quirky and a little suspenseful as the murderer is identified and the struggle for magical power erupts.
I received a free advanced reader’s copy for my honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am not usually a fan of paranormal tales. I recommend “Witch for Hire” to anyone who would like to ‘dip their toes’ into the paranormal genre.
