I used to hunt witches. Now I live with one.

To further complicate things, my past as a supernatural bounty hunter doesn’t exactly make me popular in these new circles I’m running in.

Shocker, I know.

Someone wants me dead.

Unfortunately for them, I’m pretty good at keeping myself alive. Not that it stops Ronan from being an alphahole.
He wants me to stay in Nathalie’s apartment and be safe while he handles the threat, all while holding Bree’s future over my head.

Not gonna happen.

To say I’m fucked is an understatement. But I’ve been in worse spots before.

Lucifer may be gone, but the corruption of magic isn’t. I have enemies everywhere.

And this time, they’re going to know what it means to burn.

Some things are worse than the devil.
To save Bree, I’ll become one of them.

Haunted by Shadows
By Kel Carpenter
This continues Piper, witch hunter, but living with a witch now. Lust/hate relationships with a demon or two. Lusty scenes that really just seem smutty at times. Despite all of this, I enjoyed it for the most part. I like the basic plot line, minus the smut. I like the characters, too.

***I received this ARC courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review***

As much as I wanted to like this book it didn't really hit the spot like the last one did. There is a plot, at least there was one in the previous book.

The plot was almost all about Piper finding a way to wake Bree. You see Bree has been in some kind of stasis for the past 10 years after a magical spell went awry, Piper devoted herself to finding a way to break the stasis even if it meant killing people. She just wanted her sister back. During her adventure she draws the attention of Ronan, a demon, who wants her. Piper refuses because she is focused on her sister and can't be distracted by the force that was Ronan. A lot of drama happen and at the end of book 1 , Ronan kidnaps her sister.

This book begins from there. They come to a compromise, Piper agrees to an exchange of blood in order to get her sister back and find out why she is in stasis. That's it, that was at maybe 15% and all of a sudden we forget about her sister Bree. Another subplot comes into play which doesn't even concern her and yet she immersed herself in it. Piper from book 1 was all about her sister, Piper from this book did not remember her sister except she wanted to throw a fit because Ronan wasn't helping her out.

The end left a lot to be desired as well. Maybe it's because I just read another book where a bunch of nothing happens and then all of a sudden we have a cliffhanger, maybe that's why I'm so irritated. I was hoping for more and I'm left disappointed.

I think the magic that I saw in book one has fizzled out after I finished this one. There isn't much I can say in terms of where the story went without giving away massive spoilers so I'll have to leave it at that. I didn't love where the story went or where it's possibly going.

The chemistry between Piper and Ronan was there but Piper was fighting it every step of the way. Even after he's made it very clear to her that he won't push her into anything and that he's realized that the way he was going about persuing her in the beginning only pushed her away. He will burn worlds for her at this point and all Piper can do is be stubborn about it for no other reason than she feels like it. Give him at least a chance, will you?

Bree was a much more interesting character this time around. I wish we had gotten more of her point of view in this story. She's proved to have quite the interesting background story and I want to know more about it. Particularly right before Piper blacked out and Bree was stuck with Lucifer. I would have loved to have been present for everything that happened in those moments. The recap she gave Piper doesn't seem to do what happened justice.

The ending wasn't unexpected but that's usually the twist that's presented after those circumstances come to fruition. I'm not in love with it though. I will probably give the next book a chance to redeem itself. I just hope Piper gives Ronan a chance at this point.

The Audio Book:

The narration was fine. The male narrator was a tad bit better though. The female narrator had a thing with pronouncing hard 't''s in words that it isn't usually heavily pronounced. It just took me out of the story every time she would do that. That was my only issue with the narration.

I thought Touched by Fire had a lot of twists and turns. Haunted by Shadows gives a deeper look into the world of New Chicago. The Magic Wars have taken a lot from those without magic & Piper was affected. She hates magic but thanks to Nathalie she is slowly changing her mind & losing her prejudice. A new villain arrives to take Lucifer’s place in the underworld. One more deserving of hate than Lucifer himself. Piper & Ronan grow closer & I cannot wait to see where their relationships leads them. Haunted by Shadows was a fantastic read that had me falling deeper in love with the characters.

Haunted by Shadows by Kel Carpenter is a thrilling urban fantasy that plunges readers into a world of magic, danger, and moral ambiguity. The protagonist, a former supernatural bounty hunter turned reluctant ally of witches, finds herself embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse as she navigates the treacherous waters of her new reality.

Carpenter wastes no time in plunging readers into the action, setting a breakneck pace that keeps the pages turning. From the very first line, the tension is palpable as the protagonist grapples with her troubled past and uncertain future. As she confronts enemies old and new, readers are treated to a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns that will leave them breathless.

The protagonist's internal conflict adds depth and complexity to the narrative, as she struggles to reconcile her identity as a former hunter with her newfound alliances. Carpenter deftly explores themes of redemption and sacrifice, crafting a protagonist who is both flawed and fiercely determined to protect those she cares about.

The supporting cast is equally compelling, from the enigmatic Ronan to the vulnerable Bree, each character is fleshed out with nuance and depth. As alliances shift and betrayals unfold, readers are kept guessing until the very end.

Haunted by Shadows is a gripping tale of magic and mayhem that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next installment. Carpenter's vivid prose and dynamic storytelling make this a must-read for fans of urban fantasy and supernatural thrillers alike. With its pulse-pounding action and morally ambiguous characters, this is a book that will haunt readers long after the final page is turned.

WOW… I don’t even know what to say other than wow! 5/5 stars

I absolutely loved book 1 #TouchedByFire and book 2 was equally as good. There is one twist after the other. You think it can’t possibly get any better and then BAMM comes the next twist and I just sat here with my mouth open not knowing what to think. The book literally left me speechless, because it was so good.

And I flew through it! It is one of those books you’re trying to read really slowly, just to stay in this glorious world a little while longer. However, at the same time you want to speed through it and cannot put it down, because you NEED to know what will happen next and you need to stay with this characters, because it is addicting. And I think this last word describes this series pretty well: Addicting.

#HauntedByShadows has everything a good book needs and that makes a book great: It has likeable characters, the kind of sarcastic and dry humour I love so much, the dialogues again have been quick and witty and showed a great & intelligent back and forth. Even without knowing who is speaking I was able to know who said what, because the personality of the characters shines through in every single line of dialogue. The dialoges made me squeal and giggle and fangirl so much - especially where Ronan was present. <33 There is fighting, love, friendship, lust, magic, witches, sexy demons, a slow-burn romance, some steamy scenes and just… general awesomeness.

I loved all the characters - especially the three main characters and there is so much great character development in here! All of them show development, but I simply love the direction the main character Piper herself took. She had to go through so many difficult and big changes throughout the course of the story and she will have to go through much more if this ending is any indication, but she’s coping so well! She is strong-minded, stubborn, but also deep down she has a good heart. A heart that wants to love and trust and she is doing so so well. And she is still that badass fighter that knows how to protect herself and she hasn’t lost her overall sass in these developments.
I am afraid of how she’ll be doing in book 3, because I am sure what is to come won’t be easy for her, but I am so looking forward to #BloodBeDamned , because yes, this book ended on a cliffhanger that left me a little shook not gonna lie.

The side characters were interesting as well - particularly the two twins. I’m not even sure whether we will see these two again with everything going on, but I definitely took a liking to them. Another character I really love is Lucifer. I am not sure whether I can accept and/or believe what happened in his storyline, but we will see. To be honest I am hoping to be surprised, but I don’t think it’s very likely… Everything just was so… overwhelming…

And if all these amazing characters weren’t enough? The story has a great plot as well! I loved how everything started off in book 1 and book 2 definitely did some build up for book 3, but second book syndrome was never present. I am anxiously waiting for the next book now! <3

It's the second book in the Demons of New Chicago series! I love reading about our favorite supernatural bounty hunter and the one who wants her gone, permanently. I love everything Kel Carpenter writes, and this is no exception. I also really like Ronan!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Another great book in this series! What a way to start the new year! Kel Carpenter does an amazing job with her world building & character chemistry. The heat between Piper & Ronan is so hot! I love that Piper is such a strong, take no bs leading lady. She is secure and independent, even in regards to the love aspect of the book. It makes for an interesting read that complements the story. Her relationship & growth with Nathalie just makes me happy. It reminds me of the way my friends & I sometimes are & makes the book that much more enchanting. As always, it’s ends with a bang & leaves you wanting more!

I always love kel’s characters. I love how her characters just have that darkness to them you don’t normally see in other books. Piper is the same but in this book her character growth is so satisfying. She went from a lonely and cold women to some one that can start to rely on the people close to her. Her relationship with Ronan is swoon worthy because he’s damn near perfect for a demon but i love the way her friendship grows with Nat even more. On top of the great character development (not only pipers, but Nat and Ronan’s too) this book is a fast pace action book that suck you in until you finish it. I loved it because it’s not like any other books I have read.

I really love how this girl is abrasive, assertive, and has this IDGAF attitude. She has stopped fighting so hard and it will be interesting to see how this goes now that the things holding her back are changing.

Book one in this amazing story was captivating and drew you in.. with a fast paste story and likeable characters.. but book two has smashed all expectations out the park. I love all the charters they all have their own unique quirks.. the story is fast pasted and I love Piper dry sense of humour and Ronans I can wait and you will come attitude, add to that Nats continued belief in them being a team and her unbelievable magic and you have an amazing group that I just can’t get enough of. The side charters are also just as intriguing they become such a large part of the story even if they are not in it much, they are written so well that you care about them anyway. The heat leave also went to an outstanding 10 in this book, while not being cheese or lovey dovey that would not fit the charters. The growth of the story just sucks you in and I just needed to know more and be right in it with them. I loved the twists you could not see come that kept you on your toes and unable to put the story down. I just Loved every single page and I can’t recommend this story enough please I need book 3!!!!

Haunted by Shadows is the second book in the Magic Wars: Demons of New Chicago series by Kel Carpenter and it picks up right where Touched by Fire (book 1) leaves off. In HbS, Piper is still her bada$$ self, but we see her start to soften around the edges and evolve from the hard, uncaring, magic/supernatural hating Witch Hunter she was in the first book.

The heat/steam level has been turned up a few notches and I think I love Ronan (sigh...). He is definitely fleshing out to be one of my favorite book boyfriends (maybe ever).

Action, intrigue, suspense? She brings it all. In book 2, it is obvious that something or someone has been following Piper, but who? And what for?

Answers to some of the questions from the first book are revealed, but I think I have more questions now than I had before! And that ending!! Uuuugh!! I was forgiving with the cliffy in book one, but SERIOUSLY??? We need book 3 stat!

Haunted by shadows

So, one demon is missing, but the other is just as problematic. Only now, he has a bargaining chip. Well a bargaining comatose human at least.
Piper wants her sister back, and there is only one way that’s going to happen.... she’s going to have to bargain with the Harvester. Will she further the bond in order to save her remaining family member? And can her sister ever be revived?
This is the perfect follow up. There is enough action to keep you from putting it down, and plenty of passion to ensure you don’t get any work done until the book is finished.
Piper is snarky and hard, but gradually growing and learning to trust. Nat continues to be the perfect foil for Piper’s antics. And Ronan, well he’s just as frustrating, honest and HOT as before.
If you liked the first book, then you will love this one.
I’m looking forward to the next part of the adventure.

WOW - This series keeps getting better and better.
Piper is a great character, between Nat and Ronan, they are slowly removing the layers of prejudice and hatred to reveal the root cause of her. And I love the journey they took us on.
Piper keeps her end goal locked on - save Bree, but the path she takes, it twists and turns and brakes down and opens up who she is.
Ronan - what a great character/demon. He truly does see the real Piper, and boy does he have some patience.
Everyone needs a Nat in the their life. Someone who will stick by you, believe in you even when no one else will, including yourself.
I love the world/storyline the author has created and can't wait to see what happens in New Chicago next. Bring on book #3.
Highly recommend.

The Demons of New Chicago saga continues as Piper begins to accept the catastrophic changes to herself and her world. She’s no longer alone, whether she wants to accept it or not. Getting her sister back continues to be her main focus and that annoying mate/love interest just won’t go away. At least he’s useful as is her new BFF, another thing she never asked for or wanted.
Great characters, slow burn but intense romance that isn’t really the main focus of the story makes for a book series that could cross gender genres if given the opportunity. Seriously – more men should read books like this. Learn to love strong female characters!

“Both love and magic were fucked up, but I wasn’t sure which was worse at the end of the day.” - Haunted by Shadows

I am so happy this was my first book read of 2021. This book set the tone for the year and set the bar so high. Kel this book was ~AMAZING~ and made me have all the feels!

Piper is such a strong character trying to make up for past mistakes. She doesn’t take any BS from anyone and is very independent. Seeing her open up more this book was great, and seeing how she interacts with Nat and Ronan always made me laugh. I’m going to be counting down to book 3 after that ending though!!

If you haven’t started this series yet you are missing out!

I'm going to say that I enjoyed book 2 even more than Touched by Fire. The first book gave us a great look into Piper and why she is the way she is, and why she hates supernaturals. We learn about her sister, which is what led to her summoning Ronan. In book 2 we pick up where we left off in book 1, essentially. In this book, we see more of the Underworld and effects book 1 left on it. There were definitely surprises, twists and turns. I feel like we saw more character growth in Piper. I adore Nat just as much in this book, if not more. Ronan is just delicious, and his and Piper's relationship changes and grows. I definitely recommend this book! I can't wait to see where we go from here!

I consumed this book whole. Fire overtook me and ate it up. Kel is amazing! Book two went all sorts of nuts and amazing in all the best ways.
Piper goes through so much. Good. Bad. Steamy. She grows so much as a person. Ronan, mmm...he’s just ever the alphahole we just can’t get enough of. Nat the amazing witchy bestie.
I can’t even fully put into words how much I loved this book.
If you loved book one, book two will make you fall deeper in love.

All I can say is I freaking love this book! I love all of Kels books but this one sent me on a journey I wasn't quite prepared for. While the first book was a slow build up this one gets to more of the meaty center. I really enjoy reading about Pipers journey, along with Nat, Ronan and all the other side characters you come to love or hate, there's no in-between. From book one to book two I changed some of my hate to love and love to hate. You never know from one book to the next what characters you'll learn more about to completely change your perspective on them. That happened to me in this book. I really can't wait for the 3rd book to be released! I'm anxious to see how this all turns out!

I feel that Kel Carpenter has another hit on her hands. I really enjoy this, it read a lot like Kel's books. I enjoyed Piper's growth and the sassy banter between her and the other characters. I am excited to see where this series takes us. I also can't wait to learn more about Ronan, and hopefully a bit more about Nathalie. This gets 5 stars in my book.

Well that was a wild ride. There were so many twists and turns that I'm still left reeling and downright craving the next book. I didn't know that I would be able to love these characters more than I did with the last book but OMG did they prove me wrong- the passion, the action, the stubborn loyalty?!?! This book was a work of art! In all honesty, though, what else is there to be expected by such an amazing writer such as Kel Carpenter. You NEED this series. I can't wait for the next one!

So freaking good, yet again! Piper is even better in this book than she was in the last one and boy did I love it! I love the sexual tension, the action packed scenes and the storyline that weaves it all together. Then that ending! Holy cow I know I have a long wait ahead of me but I am so excited for when the next book comes out! I definitely recommend this series!

Touched by fire was my favorite book in 2020. So I was impatiently awaiting the release of this book and it did not disappoint. This was actually better than the first. There was no dull moment in this story. Once one conflict was resolved another arose. Piper's character started to grow and change and I loved the bonds she was creating with Nat and Ronan.

Bloody hell! This book had me clinging to my kindle. I simply couldn’t put it down.
This book surpasses book 1 and book 1 was gooood. Raw intense emotions grip you while reading, from fear to adrenaline as you walk beside Piper in her quest to save her sister. Ronan is there, never relenting and the push and pull between the two of them has you reading way past your bedtime (lol)
This is an excellent read and demon or not, I’m claiming Ronan as my new book boyfriend!

This is a fantastic follow up to book one. I ardour Kel Carpenters books her characters are complicated and thought provoking.
Piper has a target in her everyone wants her, and not to be friends. Her enemies are gaining strength and working together to bring her down.
I enjoyed this book immensely and read though the night to find out what happened. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
