Jagger Cruz, the popular, gorgeous, athletic, heartbreaker, was my introduction to college flings.
Over the years, I’ve tried to pay no attention to every wicked rumor I heard about him, even though deep down I knew they weren’t just rumors. Unable to face the consequences of what we’d done, if we were ever in close quarters, I ran in the other direction. If we were coincidentally put in the same class, I dropped it.
Avoidance was the name of the game and so far I was winning.
That is, until we’re assigned the same apartment.
Living with Jagger during my last semester was definitely not in my plans, but I’m determined to make it work. As long as I don’t look at him for too long or let his innuendos get under my skin, I should be fine, right? I have to be.
They say hooking up with your roommate can be messy, and losing my heart to Jagger would be disastrous.
Claire Contreras is a New York Times Best Selling Author. Her books range from romantic suspense to contemporary romance and are currently translated into over fifteen languages. When she's not writing, she's usually lost in a book or hanging out with her family.
Personally for me this book was a mess. I had the hardest time connecting with Jagger. There was a moment in this book where I thought wait, things can actually take a turn for the better but sadly no, Josephine had to think from her vagina and ruin it.
So let’s start from the beginning. The book starts off with Josephine going to her college frat party, freshmen year.
There are a lot of guys in there. A lot. Like too many for me to just waltz in and be all cool without also being insanely awkward. One simply cannot be both and it is a choice we make. Like right now, if I decide that I am cooler than I am, no one will think to question it. I know this because I've studied the art of cool from effortlessly cool people.
Where she meets Jagger, who she already knows since they are family friends. They have one glass of Tequila together
"I never thought I'd see the day Josephine Canó would be trying to get drunk at a party." “I guess . . . I guess I figure it'll help give me a little bit of courage, you know?" “Courage for what?" “To talk to guys and stuff." He chuckles, shaking his head. "Every guy who's walked by has checked you out. I don't think you need any kind of courage." “They haven't talked to me." I feel myself frown. "Because you're with me." He winks. "I've been giving off she's mine vibe." “Oh." My heart slams into my chest. I swallow. "Do you . . . " I pause and lick my lips. "Do you want me to be yours? For the night, I mean." "Are you offering?" “Maybe."
And then they go upstairs and fuck.
He brings his mouth to mine again and kisses me like he's dreamed of this moment. I wonder, for a moment, if I should tell him that I'm a virgin. I decide against it. It's not like I have an STD that I need to disclose. On that note, when he pulls back from the kiss and begins to undress me, I shut my brain off and go with it.
So after that happened, 4 years pass by and we are at the present.
Josephine POV
but then I did the stupidest thing when I ran into Jagger freshman year and hooked up with him. A stupid, drunken, rookie mistake
Darling you had one glass of tequila..... and in between you were already throwing hints at Jagger about being ”his for the night... So like what are you talking about 😂 and let me just point out that Jagger didn’t get that memo because according to him
We’ve known each other since we were kids. We had a lot of firsts together. I cringe inwardly thinking about the last time we actually spent time together before this semester. The party we bumped into each other at was wild, to say the least, and things got out of hand faster than I anticipated. We’d both been drinking, but we weren’t drunk. We couldn’t blame the alcohol for what we did.
Anywaaaay, so it’s been 4 years since their one night stand and apparently Jagger had been in love with Josephine but before he could make his move she ended up dating his friend Lawrence, who is from the enemy team.
Now in the present Josephine and Lawrence aren’t together anymore because he cheated on her and she is heartbroken. She needs a new place to stay, and ends up being roommates with Jagger. Who she is physically attracted too. Emotionally she is still heartbroken over Lawrence.
Yes, while they are roommates Jagger is with OW, brings them home and all but honestly I didn’t care that much. As long as the H & h aren’t officially together or hooking up, these things don’t bother me that much.
Now why I called the book a mess, you can read for yourself and judge. This is regarding why Jagger and Josephine weren’t together after their hook up.
”We hooked up once.” He moves closer. My pulse leaps. “Once,” I whisper. “That worked out fine.” “Did it?” “It seemed to. You got what you wanted out of it, didn’t you? You moved on rather quickly, too.” “He was very persistent.” I swallow. “You weren’t.” “What would have happened if I had been?” “I don’t know.” It’s a total lie. I one thousand percent would have dated him, but he never chased, never showed interest. It was a one and done for him.
“I would never hurt you. That’s why I never chased. I regretted it though.”
“Of course you didn’t.” He scoffs. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “You haven’t even been around. You’ve spent so much of your time at Duke freaking parties.” He makes a face as he says the words, as if merely speaking it aloud leaves a taste in his mouth. “How would you know? You dropped classes I was in. You walked away from parties we both attended—” “Because even though we both know you’re not the chasing type and you’re definitely not the settling down type, you kept coming on to me at those parties!”
Jagger wasn’t persistent nor is he the chasing type but he kept on coming at Josephine during parties..... so like what does that mean? 🤔 He was coming at her to talk about the weather or something?
Then the thing that pissed be off. So now Jagger has been supposedly in LOVE with Josephine since their initial hook up 4 years ago. Now after being roommates, they couldn’t resist each other anymore and started hooking up. They go to a party and this is what happens.
I’m also not into fucking multiple women at once. At least, not anymore. Not after I finally had Jo again. Jo, who won’t even admit to herself that the reason she won’t allow me to fuck her in my bed is because I fucked other women there before her. I don’t make it a habit of guessing what people are feeling, but I know Jo and I know that’s the case here and from the way she keeps glancing over here and looking between me and Cassidy I also know she’s just as bothered by this as I am by seeing her with Bobby. The question is, will she do something about it? Will I?
I smile because I can’t help it. Getting attention from beautiful women is something that I may be accustomed to, but it doesn’t mean it gets old, and Cassidy is a ten out of ten, with her curvaceous body and an ass that a Kardashian would pay for. I hold her gaze as I take another sip of my beer. I’m almost out and I’m on a two-beer limit, for no particular reason other than the fact that I know myself and pacing is everything during football season, which means I either get another beer or take Cassidy upstairs and let her ride me, which would make her year and my night. She’d be good in bed. That’s not even a question.
Josephine gets jealous seeing Jagger with Cassidy and goes to him and is like let’s exclusively hook up now. No one else. I don’t need to think about it. I’m hers. I’ve been hers for a long time, even though she doesn’t know it, but I want her to sweat this out a little. Maybe I am petty after all.
What about Cassidy, Jagger? The one who is a 10/10?? What about her? Who would make your night? Who you were sure would be good in bed?
NOOOOOOOW to the main explosive part. If you haven’t figured it out yet, sometimes Jagger.... he acts like a 12 year old hormonal boy. Instead of acting like a grown ass adult and COMMUNICATING his feelings, he obviously ends up fucking up.
So Jagger, smart man. He see’s Lawrence and Josephine On that note, my gaze swings back to Jo and Lawrence. I can’t see much from here, but I do see his hand on hers and it makes my blood boil. Is she thinking about taking him back? After everything? What would I do if she did? I’d have to move out. No question about it. They stand up and walk toward the back exit together, his hand on her shoulder. I ball my fists and stand up, but before I can take a step in that direction, Mav is in front of me, pressing a hand on my chest.
Oh my god you GUYS LAWRENCE HAS HIS HANDS ON JOSEPHINES SHOULDER. OH NO WHAT HAS SHE DONE. OMG. The betrayal. Jagger sweetheart what are you going to do now? The person holding the cell phone moves to the side and starts saying Jagger’s name. The woman on top of him pulls away slightly and sticks her tongue out to the camera. Jagger also looks, no smile, no laugh, just looks straight into the camera. He looks beyond drunk. I’ve never seen him that way. My stomach squeezes. I set my hands over it suddenly regretting the greasy breakfast I had this morning. I’m going to be sick. I won’t throw up. I know myself, but still, the feeling sits in my stomach.
So instead of talking to Josephine about why she was with Lawrence? Jagger goes and makes out with another girl. They don’t have sex. Don’t worry, Jagger somehow managed to not stick his dick inside her but he did get drunk and make out with someone else, AFTER both Josephine and Jagger had an agreement they won’t be with OTHER people.
And he has the audacity to be angry with Josephine for weeks 😂😂 even after the video was out. Because she left the restaurant with Lawrence. Can YOU IMAGINE. That was him thinking “oh she chose him over me again”. How self centered do you have to be to think that 😂😂😂😂
I felt bad for Josephine here. A lot. She got cheated on already and then this happens. So I felt for her. This is the part I was talking about. The turning point. If Jagger would have groveled I would have given the book 3.5-4 stars. Easily. But you know the good old vagina. Can’t resist a hot man. I shake my head, tears springing my eyes again, trickling down slowly. I want him so badly it hurts, I want to believe him and forgive him and forget about that video, but I see it playing in my head and I don’t know that I can. Even with that thought, I stand on the tips of my toes and kiss his mouth, soft and slow. Even as I question myself and my actions and what this will lead to, I lean into his touch, into his hands as they pull down my bodysuit, arch my back as his mouth finds my nipples. Soon, we’re fumbling fingers pulling our pants down and he’s hoisting me up against the wall, my back crashing against it as his mouth finds mine again.
The thing that bothered me the most is that the book had potential. To be really good. There were moments where Lawrence tried to get back with Josephine or was trying to get her to sign this NDA, which really upset her. And how Jagger was trying to be there for her was cute. He always knew when she was upset, even when she tried her best to hide it. So they had some cute moments.
I also liked Josephine’s side story too. She crashed her fathers car etc etc, because of that her relationship with her parents hadn’t been the best. And then when she finally told her mom want actually happened that night, I did almost shed a tear.
For me the issue was understanding Jagger, like I failed to connect with him and his actions.

The Heartbreaker is Claire Contreras newest new adult/sports romance and it's got it's fair share of angst, banter, and steam. It's an enemies to lovers/forced proximity read and those are some of my favorite troupes.
Jagger and Josephine have known each other since childhood, but they see each other in a different light when they run into each other at a college party their freshman year. They have a fling, and we fast-forward a few years later. Now, they're enemies. Enemies that are forced into being roommates. These two dance around each other, as much as they seem like they can't stand each other, you can tell they carry a torch.
There were a few things that I don't love in romances that happened here, but I was mostly okay with it, until a bigger miscommunication that didn't work for me. Overall, I liked this one but I never fell in love with it. I really really wanted to love the hero, but no matter how much I tried I just didn't. I'm not 100% sure why I couldn't click with him, but I didn't care for Jagger. I did, however really like Jo. Also, his siblings... I'm so excited to get those stories.
This was a fast paced, fun, and entertaining read and I would recommend giving it a try if you like angsty NA romance.
Oh, boy! I was so excited to actually grab this one. And honestly, this book is pure cliché. I skipped through the whole thing. I have no patience for these 2-3 stars books. Where is some unique idea? Where? There is a scene when I was like "where did I hear this before." I did, and I am not wrong. (They both happened too at the party, in the bathroom. Just sayin')
“Did you wear this for him?” He touches the skirt of my dress, lifting it a bit before dropping it. “No, I wore it for me,” I lie.
From heartbreaker
"Did you wear this for him?” She swallows, shaking her head. “For me?” (..) "I wore it for me," she says, her voice a whisper.
I am okay with clichés, believe me I am. But this story is so flat, dull or I can not even find the right word choice to describe my feelings(kinda lack of it.) The story in a few sentence from what I've seen.
(SPOILER)!!
They like each other. They hook up. He is afraid thus push her away. She is dating w another dude. Dude broke her heart and there is some secret there. He is sleeping around w everybody who is breathing. Then circumstances force them back together to be around each other. - Can we be fck buddies? - Sure. So they are screwing again a few times but it is more they both know but won't admit. After all H realize he always liked her too much, she is falling in love as well. Misunderstandig, jealousy. Confession. Get back together. HEA
This is an enemies-to-lovers sports romance, where the MCs were suposed to be 22 years old but in reality they acted like 14 years old that don’t know how to communicate their feelings, which at the end, it backfired.
At 82% some OW drama happens, where he clearly cheated on her. It won’t bother me “much” if the hero would grovel and beg on his knees to the h to take him back. But did he grovel? No. He only said “I loved you from the very beginning” and she threw herself at him on the spot. These situations irk me so much like girly, after ending your relationship with your ex because of cheating, you do this type of shit? 🤦🏼♀️
This book was a total mess. It had zero originality with the typical manwhore H and full of misunderstandings. It's enemies to lovers, sports-college romance where both the MCs were so dumb🙄
They are childhood friends who meet at a college party in their freshmen year and have ONS. She was a virgin btw. Then in the present time they don't talk and hate eachother for such a stupid reason. Just because the h started dating his friend thinking that the H is not interested in a relationship while he didn't do anything but is so into her and had many friends with benefits situations with other girls. Just comunicate people it's that simple.🙄
Than fast forward 4 years later she broke up with the bf cuz he cheated on her and they happen to rent the same living space. They agree on just sexual relationship BUT being exlusive. When I really thought they were so cute, he really understood her, they opened up to each other I was like yees this is finally going somewhere but sadly no. The big misunderstanding in the end just made me so mad. He sees her with the ex bf, ASSUMES they're back together and goes to a party where he gets shitfaced and makes out with some girl.
“But you kissed her,” I whisper, hating the tears in my eyes. “I saw you kiss her.” He nods, shutting his eyes briefly. “I thought we were over. I thought you wanted him.” “You should have asked.” Now it’s my turn to step forward, to crowd his space. “You should have texted. You could have called.”
Yes you should've, but sadly you didn't which makes him the biggest asshole. And he didn't even grovel, just says I love you and she's like don't worry I forgive you. They get engaged at the end and that was it.
Addictive, sexy and angsty, I read The Heartbreaker in one sitting. The sizzling chemistry between Jo and Jagger make this a must-read for romance fans!
Claire has brought a sports/college romance that will bring you to your knees because of how dramatic and incredible it truly is...
It has been a hot minute since I read a romance by Claire and I won't lie, I have missed her writing style of youth and drama. I am not too keen of romance novels that tend to steer you away from the main characters, but with THE HEARTBREAKER I took a turn of just absolutely loving it! Claire out did herself because I really was craving a good college romance that has all the necessary needs of parties, classes, and of course the romance between Josephine and Jagger.
I really hope that she writes more sports romances. This book sure did take me back to having the same feelings of The Player.

They grew up together. Their parents are best friends. And now they're in their last year of college - the same one. One night - four years ago - they had a little naked encounter. But after that Jo tried her best to avoid Jagger. She even started dating a guy he didn't like. But now she's single again and ready to start her last year of school. New year, new house. New roommate. Aka Jagger.
LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN .... ☺

Adorable! This was your typical cute and sparky and argue-y and sexy college sports romance. I loved reading it. I also kinda hated that they wasted those four years! They could've been happily together all that time. But of course they were too young back then. But now's the time to try for that happily ever after. But it will take some time, because it doesn't look like they've grown up much since then. Lol! They still hate each other - even though we really don't know why! They don't even know why! Idiots! 😂 Anyway - the reader has a very entertaining time following their love story. I really enjoyed reading this. It wasn't anything mega surprising new, but we love those sweet college sports romances. I loved Jo and Jagger - even though they were a tiny bit too immature at times. And I loved all the siblings! I see some more stories coming!
THE HEARTBREAKER was an adorable little college-sports-second-chance-y love story! Run to your nearest amazon for your own JAGGER - this one is MINE!
3.5-4 'Pick me' Stars! ARC provided via Valentine PR in exchange for an honest review.
It's been a while since my last Claire Contreras' read and The Heartbreaker sure was a delightful, angsty and sexy treat. As soon as I read the blurb for this one, it reminded me how much I enjoyed my first (and still favorite!) book I’ve read by this author (The Player). While being a pretty easy read, with not too much drama, Claire’s new release has a lot of potential and many aspects I love about a romantic read. A mix of enemies to lovers, second chance romance and forced proximity that will have you addicted from start to finish!
The Heartbreaker is Contreras’ newest standalone and it focuses on the love story between Josephine Canó and Jagger Cruz. Part of two families who are very close, the connection between them has always been there. Four years before the actual story starts, they have an unforgettable and fateful night that completely changes their relationship. Now it’s the last year of college and Jo has been avoiding Jagger since then. Jagger is not having it, he “hates” her and he tries to focus on the people who actually are interested in him. But what happens when they are forced to become roommates? The past comes back, together with their intense chemistry, and it’s not that easy to avoid each other anymore.
We were friends once, before we went and messed that up by hooking up. Maybe we can get back there. Maybe, but doubtful, because for some inexplicable reason, I feel things I shouldn’t when I’m around him.
As I said, this novel has a mix of many themes / troupes I enjoy in the romance genre, and Claire did a very good job mingling them. What made this story is for sure the two main characters. Both Jo and Jagger have been hurt, they are still going through some stuff and they are now forced to face the consequences of that memorable night. I loved that The Heartbreaker also has that feel of “I have always wanted / loved you”. It brought depth to the development of the story, those feels that I am a sucker for and that type of slow burn that when finally explodes is incredibly intense.
“I’ve wanted you every day since and seeing you with him was like eating glass. Is that what you want to hear? Is that what it’ll take for you to finally pick me?”
Yes, I do have to also say, this is not my favorite from this author, it’s not a very unique love story but it still is a beautiful and passionate romance read that will be perfect treat for anytime you want to enjoy a story with these themes/troupes. It has two complex main characters, a whole amazing crew of secondary ones, a lot of sexual tension and consequently a sizzling chemistry and a whole array of emotions. Jo and Jagger finally get that second chance and I loved when they accepted their feelings for each other. I wish we had longer epilogue though because it felt a bit rushed but it still was oh-so-adorable!
“I love you, Josephine, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I have a million questions about my future, but you’re not one of them.”
Therefore, I am rating The Heartbreaker with 3.5-4 STARS because I thoroughly enjoyed this love story and the intense relationship between Jo and Jagger. Their second chance was beautiful to read and I hope Claire has more in store for us because I am so curious about the rest of the characters we have been introduced to! Be sure to check this emotional story out guys, especially if you enjoy enemies to lovers, second chance and forced proximity romance!
”Living with Jagger Cruz is definitely not for the faint of heart.”
Ah, don’t you just love it when you’re just supposed to love the male leads but instead end up loving each character ( obvio besides the douchebag)? Well, this was that book.
“You’re beautiful.” I cup her face and make her look at me. “You’re fucking perfect, Jo.”
Josephine Canó is heartbroken. She found her boyfriend of 3 or 4 years has been cheating on her. So, to save her another heartbreak she swears off relationship and decides to just have a fling instead of dating but her plan goes down the drain when she realises that her roommate is none other than Jagger, a guy she hooked up with 4 years ago.
”The last thing I need is to focus on Jagger Cruz and his kindness and his gorgeous face or his stupid muscles.”
Jagger Cruz is your typical playboy- a football player, a heartbreaker but with a soft side which comes out when he’s with his family and friends and yes,Jo. He’s been in love with Jo since forever when he slept with her 4 years back but he was heartbroken once he found out she started dating his friend but maybe now his time has come.
”I love you, Jo. I mean that.” He pins me with his gaze. “You don’t have to say it back. You don’t have to return the feeling if you don’t love me, but I will never stop, and I know words are just words, but mine aren’t. I don’t say shit I don’t mean.”
Overall, i loved the book! It just had everything i needed. The was a miscommunication thing between the main leads but i feel like many book have that so i didn’t think much of it. I loved each and every single one character this book had! I loved the relationship our H and h shared with his and her family. I loved the chemistry between Jo and Jagger!! I’m praying Claire gives us books for all 3 Cruz brothers! I really wanna see what happens with them.
If you’re in mood for a sweet, light and funny read check this one out!

Josephine Cano is a student at UNC. She's newly single and in her senior year. It's her last semester and she's moving into a new place. Then things turn complicated when she learns who her new roommate is.
Jagger Cruz is a popular, gorgeous football star, and her former crush. He's the ultimate fantasy, and she's never been able to forget the one encounter they shared four years ago. Their dads are friends and their families go way back, so she's tried to avoid him so things don't get messy. She's managed to stay away for years. Everything was going great, and now they're sharing the same space. He's suddenly everywhere she turns. In order to survive living together, she can't fall for his charms again, but one touch and she's in over her head. Will they be able to keep things casual, or will they finally try for something more?
-"After I had you, I knew it would never be enough."
-I lean into him, against him, wanting more, begging for more. Anything to douse the fire and sate this ridiculous need for him.
The Heartbreaker by Claire Contreras is a sexy, standalone, enemies to lovers, roommates, college, sports romance full of angst and sizzling chemistry. It's a captivating story about family, friendship and second chances. I freaking LOVED this story and this new world Claire has created! I couldn't put this book down and was completely consumed by these characters, and these delicious Cruz brothers! I'm hooked!!! <333
With charming characters and steamy chemistry, this book is a quick, light and steamy read.
Jagger was my favorite part of the book. I loved every part of him. He had a heart of gold, and while he is a playboy, as most athlete heroes are, he was charming and endearing. I enjoyed his attraction to Josephine, and I felt like it was genuine.
Josephine is dealing with a lot in this book, and I do wish that much more of that would have been more developed. There is a particular decision she makes that made absolutely no sense to me as she has so much more to lose vs. the other person. I almost thought I misread the secret when she shared it. I was almost angry with her for this choice and it made me hate a certain character even more.
The plot is quick paced and flows smoothly, but like I said previously there are some areas I wished would have been fleshed out a little more. The enemies to lovers vibe for the exposition and rising action need a bit more oomph. I never really felt that they hated each other, and never really understand the big fallout between them. There is a lot of miscommunication or not talking, which doesn’t bother me at all so it didn’t affect my rating, but it does lend itself to an easy ending.
If you are looking for fun read, the heartbreaker is for you. This one has all that plus a cast of characters you’ll adore. I’m already crossing my fingers for Mav’s book.
FIVE HEARTBREAKER STARS for Josephine and Jagger 💖🖤💖🖤!!!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I have to admit that I loved this book because of the simple plot, which according to the reviews didn't suit some people.
I've read this book quickly and easily, which suited me the most, because after constantly reading dark romance books, sometimes I need a break and this book was just that for me.
"The Heartbreaker" is a typical college sports romance that you'll read very quickly although you may sometimes get angry at the immature actions of the protagonists, without them the book would be boring.
If you're looking for a college sports romance and you also love Claire's writing style, then you should give a try this book!
Not even going to try and explain all the things I disliked here. The story fizzled and imploded almost from the get-go. Sadly, too, because it had the potential to be something much better. Mediocre writing at best, filled with a bunch of nonsensical page-filler, and it felt as though the author was in a rush to just get a book published. Very disappointing -- because I've read 5-star stories by this author.
I do love a Claire Contreras' book but how can you resist this one with that cover and title? Well, you certainly don't want to.
Jagger and Josephine (Jo) have known each other for quite a while because their parents are friends. When they both go off to the same college and end up at the same party, Jo literally grabs the bull by the horns and she and Jagger hook up.
Unfortunately, Jo hears some unkind things that turns her off from having any kind of relationship with Jagger while Jagger has pined for her since before that night.
Circumstances are only made worse for Jagger when Jo starts dating his friend, Lawrence...his cheating friend. And yes, he does tell Jo but it falls on deaf ears.
Fast forward three years and Jo finally catches Lawrence in the act. She breaks up with him, however, something happened and Jo wrecked her Dad's car and it got her kicked off the volleyball team. We slowly get filled in.
Jo gets a new place to live - it just happens that Jagger is going for the same place. They decide they can be adults about it and be roommates. It's a good thing because it forces both of them to look at some truths.
The bad part is what she sees Jagger doing. It does make it angsty but I didn't like that he did that....why would he do that?? It's somewhat explained but still didn't make it right.
Jagger has two brothers that are featured heavily in the book as well as Jo's sister, Misty. In fact, Misty and one of the brothers had a thing in the past. I'm certainly hoping the third book will be about them. (The second book, The Rulebreaker, is about the third brother, Maverick. It's set to be released July 1, 2021.)
I really enjoyed these two and was happy with the way things worked out. It will be interesting to see them in the coming books.
This was a quick read, NA, sports romance. I felt like it was a little all over the place, and the characters went back and forth a lot, but then again, they're college-aged. I personally am just not a fan of the huge misunderstanding, and I would rather people talk things out, especially if they want to be serious about each other, but again, they were young. Anyway, this is a super quick read, hot and entertaining. The audiobook narration is pretty fantastic.
„I swear I will do anything, everything, to show you I’m worthy of you.”
This is exactly the type of college love story I want to read! Angsty, sexy and utterly captivating. The Heartbreaker ticks all of the boxes when it comes to a perfect New Adult sports romance. Casted with flawed but amazing characters, and surrounded with drama, parties and new adult challenges, this story kept me in a state of complete infatuation from start to finish!
I love the way Claire handled Josephine and Jagger’s love story. It’s full of tension, longing and disappointments. Their path to each other, though filled with chemistry and passion from the very beginning, was dotted with anger, jealousy and avoidance. As befits young lovers, who are mostly hormone-driven, Jo and Jagger made mistakes, assumptions, and weren't completely honest with each other. But these errors allowed them to mature not only as individuals, but also as a couple, and create a relationship built on mutual trust, honesty and transparent and genuine feelings. Cherry on top? Jagger and Jo are pure fire together! The passion between these two is scorching hot and all-consuming. And their tender moments? Swoon- worthy!
If you’re looking for a great New Adult romance filled with sexiness and angst, this one is for you! The Heartbreaker will give you a true college experience with all the drama, fun and heat it includes. Claire Contreras delivered another engaging and magnificent story that will keep you hooked till the last page!
Keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the Cruz brothers will get their own books. I love them all!
A smokin’ hot, second chance college romance! The sexual tension is off-the-charts sexy. He had his chance and blew it four years ago. This time, he’s taking what always should have been his.
A gorgeous football player named Jagger...he’s what dreams are made of. He’s all about the game and the girls. Josephine was always the good girl, until her life imploded and now she’s trying to find her way back. She never thought Jagger would play a role. He was just supposed to be a part of her past she has long since buried. Now she can’t escape him since he became her roommate.
Her battered heart can’t handle anymore hurt. Newly single and healing after a bad break up, she’s sworn off men, especially athletes. No more relationships. Casual hook ups are all she’s looking for. When Jagger volunteers as tribute, she can’t help but accept. It may be a bad idea, but she can’t resist. Some mistakes are worth making.
Sexy, fun, a little angst and the steam factor!!! This college love story has some drama, a few secrets and a super sweet ending. An enjoyable anytime read that will leave you with a smile on your face.
This is a steamy, new adult college sports romance. Josephine and Jagger were friends when they were little. After years of not seeing each other, they run into each other their freshman year of college at a party. They start flirting at the party and sleep together. She is a virgin, but doesn’t tell him until after the fact. She knew it was a no string attached night, and when he doesn’t pursue her she starts dating Lawrence. Jo dated Lawrence for three years, during which time she avoided Jagger at all costs. She dropped any classes that she happened to have with them, left a party if he was there, etcetera.
Her last year of college, she has to take a math class that Jagger is also taking in order to graduate on time. She has recently broken up with Lawrence after he cheated on her, and is definitely not looking to start a relationship with anyone let alone Jagger. There is a popular house near campus that Jo finally got to the top of the waiting list for and gets to move in to. She shows up to get the keys, and it turns out Jagger is her new roommate. After arguing and avoiding each other for a while, they both give in to their attraction and agree to a casual fling.
They both have feelings for each other, but pretend that they don’t. Feelings get hurt when things are misinterpreted towards the end of the book. They both avoid each other instead of confronting the other person about what they think they saw. While this conflict is probably realistic when it comes to college students, I am tired of the miscommunication/misinterpretation trope. Let’s be adults and talk to each other.
Overall, this was a fun read that I would recommend if you are looking for something steamy that is a fast and easy read. 3.5 stars I received this book for free in return for an honest review.
CHARACTERS: Did not like either of them. - Jagger (hero): Sounds like a 13 year old hormonal teenager. Ex. 1: Jagger describing heroine's mother: “Mrs. Canó has a bangin’ body too, not that I’m trying to check her out or anything, but she usually wears dresses that hug her curves and hit just below the knee... Still, total MILF. Not that I’d ever fuck her. I mean, I hooked up with her daughter for God’s sake.” Ex. 2: Jagger wanting to make Jo his but all of a sudden gets the attention of another female: “I smile because I can't help it. Getting attention from beautiful women is something that I may be accustomed to, but it doesn’t mean it gets old, and Cassidy is a ten out of ten, with her curvaceous body and an ass that a Kardashian would pay for.”
- Josephine (heroine): She's just never sure of herself and makes poor decisions. She was warned by Jagger that Lawrence is a cheater. But then she decides to date him anyways and what do you know?! He cheated on her! Now we get to read an entire story of how hurt she was by it and how much of a shit stirrer Lawrence is.
REASONS for LOW Rating: 1. Prologue started off bad. So Josephine and Jagger reunite after years apart at a party. They exchange maybe like 3 lines and what do you know... And then the scene just ends there. Ch. 1 then picks up with a 4 year time jump.
2. LOTS of dialogue and fluff I like conversations that are in depth and meaningful. I also prefer more show than tell. However, a lot of the interactions are highlighted primarily by dialogue. But the conversations between the hero and heroine felt so brief and filler-like. Without the witty banter or meaningful sharing, I could not connect with the two characters nor did I feel any passion between them.
Ex. 1: Jagger gets jealous that another boy caught Josephine's attention: “Is he still inside?” “Yes.” “He’s probably waiting for me to give him my number.” “Why would you want to give him your number?” Jagger scowls. “Because he’s cute.” “I thought you were done dating athletes?” “I am.” I blink. “I told you that?” “You did.” “Hm.” I purse my lips. “I’m really thirsty.”
Ex. 2: Jagger and Josephine set roommate rules and 2 ENTIRE pages are dedicated to the topic of defining an acceptable party: “What about parties?” “What about them?” She stands up with her mug and heads to the hall. “Are we allowed to have parties?” “Do you want to have a party?” She turns to face me. “Do you?” “I mean . . . ” She bites her lip for a second. “I know you guys love to throw parties, so I guess it’s fine.”
Why do most of their conversations feel like they're answering each other's question with ANOTHER question?!
3. Writing style = mediocre Hearing the characters' monologue/thought processing made me cringe because they sounded so juvenile or immature.
Ex. 1: Prologue scene where Josephine enters a party: “There are a lot of guys in there. A lot. Like too many for me to just waltz in and be all cool without also being insanely awkward. One simply cannot be both and it is a choice we make. Like right now, if I decide that I am cooler than I am, no one will think to question it. I know this because I've studied the art of cool from effortlessly cool people.”
OVERALL: I could not get into the story because of the writing style (reads like a Wattpad book) and did not connect with the characters.
I'M SORRY BUT the ending makes me drop a star, I was adamant to give this book 3 stars but changes my mind.
I really don't like misunderstanding especially when the character jump to conclusions and I hate the way they resolved the main conflict, again, sorry but it's a no for me. Don't even remind me how they solved it, no grovel just 'oh never mind I forgive you, you did nothing wrong' and then goes straight to bareback makeup sex, just NO. Character wise... I adore their family and sibling dynamic, and Jagger can be cute sometimes, emphasized on sometimes. Jo too.. she's ok but too nice sometimes and I don't remember much about her actually.
This book had so many things that normally, I love - childhood friends / family friends, sports romance, accidental roommates. But the way it was all put together just really didn’t work for me.
For one, Jagger is hooking up with one girl casually for the first half of the book. And Jagger is just an annoying, egotistical, asshole. He never shows he cares about Jo until they’re alone, to the point of hurting her / disrespecting her by ignoring her. And then when he *thinks* she’s back with her ex, he cheats on her.
I just can’t read books where the guys are like this… arrogant, stuck up, douchebags.
The Heartbreaker by Claire Contreras was fun, passionate, and hot! I loved everything about the characters in this story! Jagger Cruz absolutely stole my heart! I read this entire book in one sitting because I could simply not put it down. If you adore college sports romances, this is the book for you.
I love the setting of this story. Being an NC girl myself, I totally get the whole Duke vs. Carolina rivalry vibe in this story. It creates some tension which is fun. Jagger and Jo have quite the chemistry, growing up together with their families being close. I loved how their friendship evolved into a hot and sexy romance, but there of course are various obstacles these two had to overcome to be together. Jo is a strong, independent female who is loyal and keeps her promises. Jagger is a sexy, alpha male who is a bit closed off at first, but eventually shows his confidence to go for what he truly wants.
This is one of my first books from Claire Contreras, but it won't be my last. This book was light, with low angst which I loved! I just adored the setting and all the characters in this book! I look forward to reading more from this author!
bah, SO predictable and it wasn't as hot as I hoped it'd be.
Some scenes weren't necessary for the plot, it just made me roll my eyes and think "what is the point of this?". There was information that just didn't add up to the plot, and it'll make the story drag from time to time.
Oh, and Jo and Jagger's behavior was infuriating at some points. So childish that it was hard to think they were at college, they just seem to be still in high school. I don't even get why they become enemies (???) and how they get past it so fast and start to hate each other, and love each other again it's like (???) Circumstances that in my opinion, should've been totally avoidable if they weren't so childlike.
It's a book fast to read and if you want something light and meaningless, this is for you.
I loved it! Seriously I was hooked from the first page. The Heartbreaker is the perfect weekend read. Just make sure you do not have anything else planned. The perfect balance of angst, swoon worthy moments and a few Oh No's and tons of chemistry.
Jo just ended a bad relationship; she wants something casual. Can she have something casual with Jagger? Jagger is the king of casual after all, that's all he does. Does it matter that are lives are intertwined? Can we recover if this crashes and burns?
I absolutely loved this enemy to lovers! A must read.
P.S. I need more of the Cruz men! I really hope they all get a book.
Why the heck did I wait so long to actually read a book by this author? She has been on my radar for several years now, but for some reason I hadn't taken the plunge and one-clicked on of her books...until now. The moment I read the blurb and saw the cover for this book, I just knew that this was going to be the story to pop my Claire Contreras cherry! AND... I must say what the PERFECT book to do so!
The Heartbreaker was an addictively steamy enemies-to-lovers new adult sports romance with a fun storyline and charming characters that had me hooked throughout this fast paced read. Jagger Cruz and Josephine Canó had that off the charts chemistry that grips your heart and leaves you swooning through those angsty moments. The passion they share was explosive and you can feel how much they care about each other, even if they both want to deny it. That back and forth push and pull feel will have you on edge as you watch these two fighting their feelings.
This story was a beautifully captivating read and I really hope that the other Cruz brothers get their own stories because I need more of them! Also, I will certainly be reading more books by Claire Contreras soon since I really loved this story and the characters.
