ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΥΣ ΔΕΣΜΩΤΗΣ
«Το αρχαίο δραματικό ποίημα του μύθου της προμήθειας της φωτιάς από τον Προμηθέα ξεκίνησα να το μεταφράζω τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2014 (τώρα που σημειώνω, σε μια γωνιά του μυαλού μου αναδύεται η σεφερική λέξη μεταγραφή για τις ενδογλωσσικές μεταφράσεις) και πρέπει να σταμάτησα να εργάζομαι σ’ αυτό στα τέλη της άνοιξης του 2018», αναφέρει ο μεταφραστής. «Η εργασία έγινε τμηματικά, αποσπασματικά και λόγω πενθών σπασμωδικά, κάποιες φορές με ασυνήθιστη ταχύτητα καθώς γύρευα να προλάβω το θάνατο επιστήθιου φίλου, με παύσεις πολλές και επανεκκινήσεις. Υπάρχει ένα είδος γιάτρισσας συγκέντρωσης που ανθίζει στις απώλειες και στις καταστροφές. Τότε υπήρχε για μένα γιάτρισσα. Έπειτα η μετάφραση διάβηκε από ανεκπλήρωτες θεατρικές διαδρομές πριν φτάσει σε αυτή την παράσταση.» Η μετάφραση του Νίκου Α. Παναγιωτόπουλου έγινε ο καμβάς, ίσως και η αφορμή, για την θεατρική και μουσική σύνθεση του Δημήτρη Καμαρωτού, σε μια παραγωγή του Κέντρου Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος (ΚΠΙΣΝ), σε συνεργασία με την Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη. Οι δύο φορείς συνέπραξαν, προκειμένου για την παρουσίασή του στο Αναγνωστήριο της ιστορικής έδρας της ΕΒΕ, το Βαλλιάνειο Μέγαρο στην οδό Πανεπιστημίου. Συμμετείχαν οι ηθοποιοί Αμαλία Μουτούση και Κωνσταντίνος Αβαρικιώτης, η μεσόφωνος Άννα Παγκάλου και οι μουσικοί Κατερίνα Κωνσταντούρου και Χρήστος Λιάτσος. ). Υπήρξε πολύ μεγάλος τραγικός ποιητής της αρχαίας Ελλάδας, ίσως και μεγαλύτερος απ όλους γενικά τους άλλους ομοτέχνους του. Ήταν επίσης αρχιτέκτονας, σκηνοθέτης και μουσικός. Από τα έργα του 67 χάθηκαν και μόνο 7 διασώθηκαν ("Προμηθέας Δεσμώτης", "Ικέτιδες", "Πέρσες" και "Επτά επί Θήβαις", καθώς και η τριλογία του υπό τον τίτλο "Όρέστεια" που περιλαμβάνει τα μερικότερα έργα: "Αγαμέμνων", "Χοηφόροι" και "Ευμενίδες").
Ο Αισχύλος διακρίθηκε σαν μαχητής στο Μαραθώνα και στη Σαλαμίνα. Πήρε εξάλλου, 13 πρώτα βραβεία από έργα του, εκτός από τα δεύτερα και τρίτα, που κατά καιρούς του απονεμήθηκαν σε αντίστοιχους διαγωνισμούς. Με το Αισχύλο η αρχαιοελληνική τραγωδία εξελίχθηκε, από τον αρχικό διθύραμβο, σε πολυπρόσωπη παράσταση και έφθασε στο μεσουράνημά της. Το ύφος του διακρίνεται για τη μεγαλοπρέπειά του, το όλο δε έργο του για το βάθος, την πρωτοτυπία στη μορφή και την ισχυρότατη φαντασία του μεγάλου ποιητή. Κατά γενική, σχεδόν, αναγνώριση ο Αισχύλος υπήρξε μέγας και, από κάθε άποψη, ασύγκριτος δημιουργός. Πέθανε από ατύχημα στη Γέλα της Σικελίας, σε ηλικία 70 ετών, και τάφηκε εκεί. Προμηθεύς Δεσμώτης = Promētheus Desmōtēs = Prometheus Bound, Aeschylus
Prometheus Bound is an Ancient Greek tragedy. In antiquity, it was attributed to Aeschylus, but now is considered by some scholars to be the work of another hand, and perhaps one as late as c. 430 BC. Despite these doubts of authorship, the play's designation as Aeschylean has remained conventional.
The tragedy is based on the myth of Prometheus, a Titan who defies the gods and gives fire to mankind, acts for which he is subjected to perpetual punishment.

To you, the clever and crafty, bitter beyond all bitterness, who has sinned against the gods in bestowing honors upon creatures of a day—to you, thief of fire, I speak.
Daphne was turned into a laurel tree as she ran away from Apollo. Clytie, consumed with love for the sun god Helios, gazed at the sun until she turned into a heliotrope. Medusa was transformed into a hideous Gorgon by the goddess Athena. Narcissus, enamored with his reflection, stared at himself until he perished. He turned into a flower that bears his name.
(Greek mythology has turned me off from gardening).
However, none of these tragedies compare to what happened to Prometheus. As the Titan god of fire, he gave humans the gift of fire, but Zeus punished him for his kindness. Prometheus was chained to a rock and had his liver eaten by an eagle every day, only to have it grow back each night in a never-ending cycle of misery.
Out of all the injustices in Greek mythology, the fate of Prometheus is the most heart-wrenching. He didn't deserve to suffer this way, especially since he had fought alongside the gods in their war against the Titans. All he wanted was to share his gifts with mortals, improve their lives, and inspire and teach them.
"Every art possessed by man comes from Prometheus."
Final thoughts:
Zeus ate his first wife, Metis, while she was pregnant with Athena, transformed himself into a swan to do the nasty with Leda, transformed himself into a white bull to do the nasty with Europa, married his sister, cheated on his sister constantly, sired numerous illegitimate children, refused to pay child support, yet somehow Prometheus is the bad guy? Prometheus gave us the gift of fire. Just think of all the delicious barbeques you enjoyed because of him. What did Zeus leave behind other than STDs?
Daddy Cronus should have eaten Zeus. Yes, I said it.

Zeus is such a tyrant; he just wanted to keep all that power to himself. So when the noble hearted Prometheus gave a little bit of it to man, Zeus was rather angry; thus, he punishes Prometheus rather severely: he is chained to rock where an eagle eats his liver, only for it to grow back overnight for the next day’s feed. This is perpetually repeated.
But what of Prometheus’s reasons. Why did he give man fire?
He did it because he saw that man needed it. It wasn’t the simple reckless theft as Zeus would have it be: it was benevolence. Prometheus is a titan, a race of giants of incredible size that possess great strength; however, they have little intellect. Prometheus is the exception to the rule. He saw in man a smaller version of himself; he realised that salvation resided in improving one’s intellect, like his own did, so he gave them a tool in which they could use to develop. Does he sound like a bad guy? No. He doesn’t. His only crime was disobedience. His fate eternal torture:
Prometheus is, naturally, quite annoyed at the entire situation. He has spent years in service to this new God; he helped him win his dominion. This is how he is repaved? He knows that Zeus will never relent, so he turns to prophecy to construe the tyrant’s fall. He speaks to the chorus and to various demi-gods to make his plans known. He is very much the victim in this play. He only ever wanted to help mankind, but in doing so he accidently threatened the position and authority of the Gods. Not a thing to be taken for granted by those in power.
"Then beneath the earth those hidden blessings for man, bronze, iron, silver and gold—who can claim to have discovered before me? No one, I am sure, who wants to speak to the purpose. In one short sentence understand it all: every art of mankind comes from Prometheus.
So the situation becomes morally complex. Although his actions were intended to be kind, he very much overstepped a boundary. Man has prospered with his gift, but it wasn’t Prometheus’s to give. Perhaps the Gods were withholding it for a reason beyond their own preservation. Man has developed medicine and trade form fire, but he has also developed war and conquest. He has become more productive, more dangerous. Zeus could simply have taken fire back from man, though he has a point to make in his actions. He wants Prometheus to see his “mistake” and live with the consequences. Isn’t Zeus just lovely?
I love how Aeschylus has banded this situation together. He plays on the audience’s sympathy for his hero, but he also shows the danger he possesses. As ever, with Ancient Greek drama the morale dilemma is the driving force of the plot. I’d love to see this performed; it’s a true shame the rest of the trilogy didn’t survive, but that’s where we look to Percy Shelley’s interpretation of the second play Prometheus Unbound. And wonder at the power of the poet’s ability to take Aeschylus’s source material and make it so completely his own without destroying it.

Prometheus Unbound is a curious play by Aeschylus that allows us to understand a relatively unknown part of Greek mythology: Prometheus's condemnation of his famous torture.
The room was filled with beautiful replicas, which were very accurate, of a sober beauty typical of Greek tragedies, but it seemed a little wordy to me. I have a little trouble with Aeschylus' choice to present the hero to us, who was already condemned to his ordeal from the play's start. It would have been, in my opinion, more attractive to give a real personality to the different characters, and, in particular, Prometheus, to show them in the grip of their destiny from which they are trying to escape. Their replies would probably have seemed a little less vain to me. However, it is quite a pleasant play to read, and Aeschylus writes with exciting lines, although the whole story is too wordy for my taste.

It would have been, in my opinion, more attractive to give a real personality to the different characters, and, in particular, Prometheus, to show them in the grip of their destiny from which they are trying to escape. Their replies would probably have seemed a little less vain to me. However, it is quite a pleasant play to read, and Aeschylus writes with exciting lines, although the whole story is too wordy for my taste.

Prometheus knows that indeed, and suffers unspeakable injustice and pain for his unruly tongue and rebellious action. But that doesn't stop him from speaking up against the tyranny of Zeus, who is particularly harsh and unfair as he is new to power - not established enough yet to be able able to cope with free thinking, independence and criticism.
Prometheus is punished for feeling for humankind and for giving them the tools to rise to a new level of civilisation. By giving them fire, he offers them what was considered the privilege of gods, and thus he breaks the hierarchical rules of the status quo. For that, he is chained to a mountain by Hephaistos, acting unwillingly on Zeus' orders.
The political situation described two and a half millennia ago is strikingly human and timeless. Exchange Prometheus' name for any idealist rebel, and Zeus' wrath for that of any ruthless patriarch, and the drama will stay essentially the same. You will find the sexual exploitation of young vulnerable women exposed to men of power without empathy in any given era, and most later victims won't be given the whole Ionian Sea to be remembered by. You will find the advisers of Oceanus' type - recognising injustice but reluctant to risk their own privilege to speak up against the tyrant. And you will find the powerless Chorus of those lamenting fate without being able to change it.
Machiavelli described Zeus in his Prince. And Milton created a version of Prometheus in his Satan. Wherever people are punished for speaking truth to power and standing up for the rights of weaker communities, you have Prometheus Bound re-enacted.
And still today we hear powerful men yelling "Pride!" or "Shame!" whenever someone takes on the role of Prometheus to educate and support humanity and to make them independent of tyrannical rulers' whims.
Prometheus is all of us who believe in and work for the development of civilised and just life. What makes him stand out is his will to act on behalf of others, and not just moan and complain about the injustice of his "bad boss".

دوباره دست به سرقتی دیگر بزن.... آتش را از آدمیان سپنجی، این خدایان نو رسیده بستان.
پرومته...تو دوستدار آدمیان بودی یا دشمنشان؟ این موهبت بود که بدیشان دادی یا که افسون بلا؟
پرومته...آتشت را بردار. تو دوراندیش خدایان بودی... تو خود میدانستی با بخشیدن آتش چه بر سرت می آید اما باز دست به این سرقت زدی.
پرومته آیا ژرفای دوراندیشی ات پیشتر نرفت؟....پیشتر نرفت تا ببینی انسان با آتش چه میکند؟ آری انسان با آتش خوراک میپزد، با آتش هنر می آفریند...اما تو ندیدی که این شعله کوچک چگونه انسانیت را میسوزاند.
پرومته... ای روشن بین...تو به آدمیان هدیه دادی، اما نمیدانستی که آدمیان چقدر به هدیه تو عشق میورزند. آنچنان مسحور این شی زیبا شده اند که یادشان رفته انسانی درون آن میسوزد.

I greatly enjoyed reading this play. It’s mind boggling that it was written around 500 years BC! It was surprisingly easy to follow and understand, and I liked how the gods/titans conversed like normal people, even though they looked down on mortals so much.

I'm shocked to see that only one of my Goodreads friends has read this play. This is my favorite work of ancient Greek literature. The story has some pretty deep meaning. It's really the inverse of the Fall From Grace. Instead of the human desire for knowledge resulting in the perverse punishment of Original Sin as issued by that sadistic toddler running the show in the Old Testament, we find a tale of heroic sacrifice which results in the illuminating powers of reason and curiosity being bestowed upon the minds of mortal, fallible human beings.

This Grecian play is about Prometheus, a Titan who defied Zeus and is now being torturously punished for it.
After Zeus overthrew the Titans (with Prometheus’ help), he settled himself as a pure tyrant with nothing but cruelty and narcissism to his name. He saw no use for humans and wanted to wipe them off the face of the earth to be replaced by a new race. However, Prometheus took pity on the human creatures and decided to give them the gift of Fire, and with that gift gave them the knowledge to stay alive and improve their lives.
Zeus, furious for being defied, puts Prometheus in chains for this and orders him to be tied to a cliff’s edge for many, many years, where he will feel nothing but torture and misery. Prometheus knew that he would be punished for his selfless act to help the humans, but even he did not imagine his punishment to be so cruel. Thus, the play mostly shows him lamenting his bad fortune and hopeless future to whoever will listen, but yet he never loses his spirit or his belief in his own righteousness. He screams taunts of Zeus’ inevitable downfall, and refuses to offer any help in the future. The play shows us that Prometheus may have lost his freedom, but he did not lose his fiery heart or his desire for revenge.
All in all, I think this was a very sad story that showed the evilness of the Gods, even towards someone to whom they owe their rule.
We see how Prometheus, who acted out of nothing but the goodness of his heart and willingness to teach, will have to suffer dire consequences by the hands of the evil Zeus, who, by tradition, is truly one of the most cruel and disgusting Gods in the whole of Greek mythology. Honestly, Zeus and his weak-minded minions made me want to rage and riot, as per usual.
That said, I do think the play itself lacked a sense of action, suspense and urgency. The characters spoke a lot of words discussing the past and future, but we don’t actually get to see any events unfold in the present. Therefore, the story was a little bit stale.

در این نمایشنامه (سال ۴۳۰ پیش از میلاد نوشته شده)، زئوس یک ظالم مطلق به تصویر کشیده می شود. چرا که او اعتقادی به قوانین حاکم بر دوستی ندارد و اصلا مفاهیمی همچون دوستی، عشق یا هم دردی را درک نمی کند. با وجود این که پرومته یکی از عوامل مهم پیروزی زئوس بر علیه تایتان ها است، باز هم زئوس او را تنبیه می کند. این تنبیه از نظر مخاطب بسیار شنیع به نظر می آید، نه به خاطر این که خود تنبیه بسیار بی رحمانه است، بلکه به این خاطر که این تنبیه بر شخصی تحمیل می شود که از دوستان زئوس بوده است. آیسخولوس در طول نمایشنامه با ارجاع های مختلف به دوستی، عامدانه بر روی این حقیقت تاکید می کند. هفستوس به دلیل دوستی با پرومتئوس، نمی تواند به راحتی دستورات زئوس را اجرا کند. گروه همسرایان اگرچه در ابتدا بر اطاعت تاکید می کنند، در اواخر نمایشنامه اعلام می کنند که دوستی ارزشی با اهمیت تر است. علاوه بر این باید این نکته را مد نظر داشت که یکی از دلایل مجازات شدن پرومته این است که او دوستی با انسان ها را به احترام و اطاعت از زئوس ترجیح می دهد. زئوس به دلیل خودخواهی و مستبد بودن نمی تواند این مسائل را درک کند. تاکید پرومته بر اهمیت دوستی، در بخش نهایی نمایشنامه و توسط هم سرایان برجسته می شود. آن ها تاکید می کنند که اطاعت کردن باید در جایگاه دوم قرار گیرد. استبداد زئوس به جای این که بر حق و منصفانه باشد، شیطانی و گمراهانه به نظر می رسد.
پرومته و زئوس نمایندگان عقل و زور هستند. پرومته با هوشمندی خود به زئوس کمک می کند تا تایتان ها را شکست دهد. ولی زمانی که تصمیم می گیرد با استفاده از عقل و هوش خود به انسان ها کمک کند، زئوس با استفاده از زور او را تنبیه می کند. این کشمکش در طول نمایشنامه بارها مورد تاکید قرار می گیرد. ملازمان زئوس پرومته را به سخره می گیرند که چرا این قدر تیزهوش نبوده که از تنبیه زئوس جلوگیری کند. هم سرایان به شیوه ای هم دلانه تر او را نکوهش می کنند. ولی پرومته معتقد است بدون دانش او زئوس سقوط می کند. چرا که قدرتی بالاتر از او شکستش می د��د. زور شاید بتواند بر تفکر غلبه کند، ولی بدون آن عمر چندانی نخواهد داشت. در پرومته در زنجیر، آیسخولوس با نشان دادن پرومته به عنوان قربانی ضعیف اما مقاوم در برابر یک نیروی مافوق، قدرتمند و ستمگر که به لطف قوانین مستبدانه و اطاعت محض زیردستانش به قدرت ادامه می دهد، به نمایش کشمکش حل ناشدنی میان زور و عقل می پردازد. با این حال در لایه زیرین این کشمکش، این ایده مطرح می شود که زور برای تداوم بقاء خود به تفکر هم نیاز دارد. آیسخولوس این تصور را در ما به وجود می آورد که در نهایت، عقل و زور در صورت همکاری با یک دیگر است که مانع بروز فاجعه می شوند. مقاومت متفکرانه پرومته که در نقطه مقابل اطاعت بی چون و چرای زیر دستان زئوس قرار دارد، بر اهمیت تداوم تفکر تاکید می کند. قضاوت مشخص پرومته بالاخره روزی باعث نجات زئوس می شود. در حالی که مخالفت او با زئوس در نهایت منجر به نابودی می شود.

اشیل یا آیسخولوس یکی از سه تراژدی نویس بزرگ یونان است. داستان پرومته (پرومتئوس) مانند بیشتر بیشتر آثار یونانی، یک تریلوژی بوده است؛ اما هزار افسوس، که دو نمایشنامه بعدی، پرومته امروز باقی نمانده است. گرچه ما از عاقبت پرومته، بر اساس دیگر آثار یونانی، آگاه هستیم؛ اما نمی دانیم دارد دقیقاً اشیل چه طور آن را روایت کرده است. روایت پرومته، روایت طغیان است. طغیان آدمی، در‌برابر اراده خدایان و زئوس خودکامه. روایت مقاومت در برابر سلاح دیرینِ ایزدان، رنج و توسل به بینش و آگاهی!
شخصیت‌های نمایشنامه، تماماً در خدمت توصیف همویند که حضور ندارد! در خدمت توصیف زئوس. خدای مغرور و تازه به قدرت رسیده که کمر به نسل‌کشی آدمیزاد بسته است و تیتانی طاغی، به نام پرومته، برخلاف میل خدای خدایگان، آگاهی خویشتن را در اختیار آدم می‌گذارد و شعله‌ای از آتشی که زئوس پنهان کرده است را در امتیاز آدمی قرار می‌دهد. در مقابل این سرکشی، توقع می‌رود که زئوس پرومته را در جهان زیرین، هادس، زندانی کند یا او را بکشد. اما این چنین نمی‌کند! او را بر بالای کوهی به زنجیر می‌کشد و پرنده‌ای مأمور میشود تا هر روز، جگر پرومته را بشکافد و سینه پرومته را بدرد. پرومته تاوان دانستن و بینش‌اش را پرداخت میکند. رنجی مدام. اما چرا زئوس پرومته را از بین نمی‌برد؟
پرومته چیزی را می‌داند که کسی نمی‌داند. گویی خردی که از مادرش گایا به ارث برده است همان که امروز به زنجیرش کشیده، منجی فردایش خواهد بود. راز از بین رفتن حکمرانی زئوس را تنها پرومته می‌داند! پس زئوس لاجرم باید آنقدر او را عذاب کند تا لب به سخن بگشاید و پرومته که از فردا آگاهی دارد؛ به این سادگی لی به سخن نخواهد گشود!
پ.ن: مثل تجربه افسانه های تبای، در این اثر هم شاهرخ مسکوب، مقدمه بسیار فوق‌العاده ای بر اثر نگاشته بود که در داوری اثر، نادیده گرفتن آن ممکن نمی باشد! در نوشتن این بررسی از مقدمه مسکوب یاری گرفتم.
پ.ن۲: هیچ رابطه منطقی ای بین شخصیت ایو، معشوقه زمینی زئوس، و پرومته وجود ندارد. اما اشیل تصمیم گرفته است که از او در این تراژدی استفاده کند (شاید به خاطر شخصیت پردازی بیشتر زئوس) برای من ایو، بهترین شخصیت ماجرای پرومته است!
پ.ن۳: طبق مقدمه مسکوب، اشیل متعلق به دوره طلایی تمدنی یونان است! فهم درست و عمیق از دوره تاریخی اشیل که در آن دموکراسی بر فرمانروایی اشراف پیروز میشود؛ معنایی ژرف تر از پرومته در اختیار ما می‌گذارد.
پ.ن۴: اشیل، نویسنده بسیار مذهبی است اما شاید بشود پرومته در زنجیر را یکی از ضد مذهبی ترین آثار یونانی دانست. توجیه این حقیقت، با دانستن عاقبت پرومته و تریلوژی ای که امروز از بین رفته توجیه میشود. (من داستان را برای خوانندگان مشتاق افشا نمی‌کنم)

This is probably the best and most classic telling of Prometheus, from his giving fire to man from the noblest of reasons to how horribly and seemingly unjustly that Zeus punishes him.
All arts and tools come from Prometheus, after all, and he should always be considered the greatest of all friends of mankind even though he is a titan.
However, he's also the one that pushed us to improve our intellect in the same way he did for himself, and in doing so, he brought harm upon himself. See a trend? We created war with the smelting of ore into weapons, after all. It's not all about cooking and keeping warm or creating medicine.
Was Zeus right? Was it right to keep an immortal chained and have a bird eat his liver for all eternity? Or was this just the graphic depiction of what we will always do to ourselves?
I wish I could read the other two parts of this play. I think that would be awesome. :) But alas. What we've got is still pretty raw and emotional and delightfully slanted. After all, we're meant to sympathize entirely with Prometheus throughout the play.
It reminds me an awful lot of Paradise Lost. :) Good motivations and charismatic leaders leading to roads paved to hell. :)

من دو نسخه از این کتاب رو از کتابخونه امانت گرفتم؛ یکیش ترجمه‌ی شاهرخ مسکوب و اون یکی از عبدالله کوثری.
هردو ترجمه خوب بودن (البته فقط از نگاه یه خواننده فارسی‌زبان، چون متن اصلی نداشتم) اما به دیدِ من عبدالله کوثری با خلاقیت بیشتری متن رو شاعرانه‌تر و زیباتر کرده بود، و خیلی جاها هم سعی کرد شبه-قافیه‌هایی توی متن تکرار کنه و آرایه‌های ادبی به کار ببره.
مثال می‌ذارم (بقیه ریویو هم همه‌ش همینه فقط مثال):

هردو ترجمه خوب بودن (البته فقط از نگاه یه خواننده فارسی‌زبان، چون متن اصلی نداشتم) اما به دیدِ من عبدالله کوثری با خلاقیت بیشتری متن رو شاعرانه‌تر و زیباتر کرده بود، و خیلی جاها هم سعی کرد شبه-قافیه‌هایی توی متن تکرار کنه و آرایه‌های ادبی به کار ببره.
مثال می‌ذارم (بقیه ریویو هم همه‌ش همینه فقط مثال):

Bound to a rock, Prometheus claims for help and understanding; for how long?... imprisoned.
He’s alone. Someone has locked his feet and hands. He implores the Divine Ether, the winds …mother Earth, the Sun: “look at the suffering imposed upon a god”.
He gets an explanation from the Oceanides who inform him that the Olympus has new rulers; Zeus' laws are absolute; there’s no forgiveness for the deeds of Prometheus, who, once brought to humanity the divine fire: all arts' knowledge.
Zeus, now is the king. He wants to annihilate races. He distributes privileges; but nothing to mankind.
Prometheus swears: “one day will come to ban him:… he’ll pay for this unjust deed”.
The end for this tragic play places Prometheus being buried under rocks.
Three thousand years later Shelley will resurrect him...

Azra Erhat metni yine mükemmel çevirisiyle bize sunarken, metnin değindiği konuyu, miti daha iyi anlayalım diye Hesiodos'un Thegonia'sından 2 bölüm ile Goethe'nin Prometheus şiirini kitabın sonuna, kendi Mitoloji Sözlüğü'ndeki Prometheus maddesini de önsöz olarak kitaba giriş olarak eklemiş. çünkü harika biri.

Nothing happens! More than any other work of literature I've ever read, Prometheus Bound is the play where nothing happens. Even in Waiting for Godot, the characters at least move around a little. But poor Prometheus spends the entire play spiked to a rock.
But it's terrific anyway.
This is Karl Marx's favorite play, and you'll understand why. Prometheus is a proletariat hero: when he sides against the gods and with humanity, he's going with the Revolution. It's not just fire he gives them, either; he throws in math, writing, medicine, and "blind hopes" to stop men from "foreseeing their death." Thanks?
Prometheus is a great character himself: sarcastic, cynical, overflowing with self-pity: one of the most human characters in Greek drama. He spends most of the play boasting about what he's done for humans or whining about how much his punishment sucks. Hermes is right when he says, "You'd be unbearable if you were free."
He gets this wonderful moment in the second half: Io shows up to commiserate. She's one of Zeus and Hera's many casualties: Zeus wanted to sleep with her, Hera was jealous, and she ended up getting turned into a cow driven from one end of the earth to another by a stinging gadfly. So she ambles in and they're like, man: that Zeus guy, huh? What a dick. It's a very cool interaction, the Titan and the cowified maiden recognizing each other as fellow sufferers.
But this is one reason there's some debate over whether Aeschylus wrote Prometheus Bound at all: Zeus is a total dick here. A tyrant. There's not much ambiguity. Prometheus repeatedly prophesies his overthrow, too, which is weird because Greek audiences would have known perfectly well that he's lying. So why this assault on Zeus? Prometheus tells Hermes, contemptuously, "Let me assure you, I would not exchange / my own misfortune for your slavery" [to Zeus]. That's an intense thing to say, right? The issue of tyranny was important to the Greeks, who (as you may have heard) were trying this new thing they called "democracy" - see Sophocles' great Antigone for more - but it seems downright reckless to accuse Zeus of it. Over the past few decades, most scholars have tipped against Aeschylus' authorship: their idea is that this is a later play mistakenly attributed to Aeschylus. Only a later playwright would be this brash, is the idea.
If you're only going to read one Aeschylus, it should be Anne Carson's translation of Agamemnon; after that you should read the other two plays in The Oresteia, either the Fagles or Hughes translations.
But read this fourth! Whoever wrote it, they did a great job. For a play in which nothing happens, there's a lot going on.

Scully and Herington, which I read on Dec. 27 2012, is not very good. Functional at best, and beware: there are stupid modernizations here. Guess what they wrote? They wrote this: "Zeus is not / about to mellow". So much for them.
Joel Agee has a new translation for NYRB Classics that I read on March 24 2015, and it's way better - so much better that I rewrote this entire review because now I like this play. Also I got to meet Agee last night and he's wicked nice.

Prometeu (O Filantropo) roubou o fogo aos deuses e entregou-o aos homens. Além do fogo, "insuflou-lhes cegas esperanças" - para que deixassem de se preocupar com a morte - e ensinou-lhes as artes para que evoluíssem. Zeus, furioso, condenou o Titã a ser acorrentado a um rochedo, enquanto uma águia lhe devorava o fígado, que se renovava constantemente. É libertado, por Hércules, ao fim de trinta milénios.

Romanian review: ,,Prometeu înlănțuit" este prima piesă de teatru din Grecia Antică pe care am citit-o. Știam povestea lui Prometeu de foarte mult timp: Prometeu este titanul care a furat focul și l-a dăruit oamenilor, fiind pedepsit de Zeus. Pedeapsa sa a fost să fie înlănțuit de o stâncă pentru eternitate, în timp ce un vultur venea în fiecare zi pentru a-i mânca ficatul care se regenera. Hercule este cel care l-a eliberat în cele din urmă. Ideea este că piesa nu oferă foarte multe lucruri noi și cu siguranță ar fi fost mai interesantă dacă nu cunoșteam deja mitul lui Prometeu.
Piesa constă în totalitate într-un dialog pe care îl poartă Prometeu cu Io, Hermes și Corul, după ce titanul își primește pedeapsa. Deși este destul de interesant, nu mi s-a părut impresionant.
Piesa vorbește despre natura efemeră a puterii, despre felul prin care, oferindu-le focul oamenilor, Prometeu le-a dat acestora putere, dar și capacitatea să evolueze și să înainteze pe drumul cunoașterii. Tema cunoașterii este vag abordată, fiind mai mult subînțeleasă. Prin comparație, cărți precum Frankenstein: The 1818 Text o abordează mult mai în detaliu și într-un mod mult mai impresionant.
Concluzia este că ,,Prometeu înlănțuit" a fost o lectură plăcută, dar nu m-a impresionat prea mult. Părerea mea este că are mai mult o valoare istorică decât artistică.
English review: "Prometheus Bound" is the first Ancient Greek play I’ve ever read. I’ve known the story of Prometheus for a long time: he’s the Titan who stole fire and gave it to humanity, only to be punished by Zeus. His sentence was to remain chained to a rock for eternity, with a vulture coming every day to eat his regenerating liver. Eventually, Heracles freed him. The thing is, the play doesn’t add much to what I already knew, and it would definitely have been more engaging if I hadn’t been so familiar with the myth of Prometheus.
The entire play consists of a dialogue between Prometheus and the Chorus, Io, and Hermes after Prometheus has received his punishment. While it’s somewhat interesting, I didn’t find it particularly striking.
The play reflects on the fleeting nature of power, exploring how Prometheus, by giving fire to humanity, not only empowered them but also granted them the ability to progress and seek knowledge. However, the theme of knowledge is only lightly touched upon—it’s more implied than fully developed. In comparison, works like Frankenstein: The 1818 Text delve into this theme with far greater depth and impact.
In conclusion, "Prometheus Bound" was an enjoyable read, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression. In my opinion, its value lies more in its historical significance than in its artistic merit.

Malum olduğu üzere, ateş ilkel dönemden beri insançocuğunun kafasını her zaman karıştıran gizemli bir güçtür. Bazı kaynaklarda Homo Sapiens'in büyük göç harekatında silah olarak kullandığından bahsedilen ateşin; tek tanrılı dinlerde de karşımıza kimi zaman ceza;
"Ve kafirler için hazırlanmış olan ateşten sakının." (Kur'an; 3:131)
Kimi zaman ise Tanrı'nın vahiy aracı olarak çıkmaktadır.
"Ve Rabb'in meleği, bir çalıdan yükselen ateş alevinin içinden ona göründü. Musa baktı, çalı yanıyor, ama tükenmiyordu." (Tevrat; Çıkış 3:2)
Bu eserde ise ateş bir metafor. İnsançocuğunu insan yapan hemen her şeyin simgesi. Tekniğin, sanatın ve yaratıcılığın bir simgesi. Ve yine ateş; Prometheus'un yaptığı eylem ile devrimci bir hareket.
İnsançocuğunu "İnsan" yapan hemen her şeyi getiren Prometheus bu davranışıyla cezalandırılacaktır. Zira kadim dünyada da geçerlidir bu kural: hiçbir iyilik cezasız kalmaz.
Konuyu çok güzel özetleyen ve bütünüyle ayrı bir eser olarak yorumlanabilecek; Azra Erhat'ın güzel önsözü, kitabın doyurucu ekleri ile başarılı bir çalışma olduğu su götürmez. Yorumumu, aslında oldukça gizemli bir alıntı ile tamamlıyorum:
"Önceleri insanlar görmeden bakıyor,
Dinlediklerini anlamıyorlardı,
Uzun ömürleri boyunca düş görüntüleri gibi
Düzensiz, gelişigüzel yaşıyorlardı" (s.19)

طغیانی علیه ایزدان و قوانین ناعادلانه‌شان.
فکر نمی‌کنم هیچ‌چیزی بهتر از حرف‌هایی که شاهرخ مسکوب برای کتاب تو موخره نوشته بود، بتونم بگم. بسیار کوتاه و خواندنی. آدم باورش نمی‌شه ۵۰۰ سال قبل از میلاد همچین چیزهایی به نگارش در اومدن.

In vista dell’allestimento a Siracusa ho riletto questo capolavoro.
Forza delle parole, potenza del protagonista sono alla massima espressione.
Prometeo è un bullo con gli dei e un eroe con gli uomini. Subisce la sua condanna con sprezzo verso Zeus, poiché ne conosce il destino, e non si piega davanti a nessuno: non davanti alle parole di Cratos e Bia, non davanti alle minacce di Hermes, che velano di paura gli occhi di Zeus.
PROMETEO:
O etere lucente, venti dal volo rapido,
sorgenti dei fiumi, scintillio infinito delle onde del mare,
terra madre di tutte le cose, e cerchio del sole onniveggente,
io vi invoco. Guardatemi: sono un dio, ma patisco strazio ad opera di dei.
Scintilli davanti ai vostri occhi la sofferenza.
Spendida la descrizione della natura, è a essa che Prometeo si rivolge. E' ad essa che chiede pietà perchè il cuore degli dei è muto al suo dolore.
E ancora sempre Prometeo:
Adesso, infelice ludibrio dei venti,
patisco un supplizio che è festa per i miei nemici.
Qui si sente la comunanza della malvagità dei nemici di fronte alla debolezza del singolo. E' la cattiveria quella che lega, non la bontà.
E il Coro risponde:
Inaccessibile è l'indole del figlio di Crono,
inesorabile il suo cuore.
La bontà del dio che dona il fuoco agli uomini, che non si piega alla loro sconfitta è incomprensibile per gli altri.
Sono passi che mi danno il senso della profondità dell'animo dello scrittore. I libri che si scrivono oggi sono spazzatura dopo un anno. Loro hanno guardato il loro animo attraverso i secoli, li hanno superati e sono giunti fino a noi, inesorabili, imperturbabili, attuali nelle tematiche e nella sensibilità dell'uomo verso l'altro uomo. E' una cosa che in qualche modo mi affascina e mi spaventa insieme.
Ed è il tempo eterno a scandire la vita degli dei in un percorso ciclico e continuo.
Prometeo è condannato ad essere legato ad una rupe alla fine del mondo e ad avere le viscere straziate da un’aquila ab infinito; Atlante a reggere le sorti del mondo; Tantalo ad una sete e fame imperitura; Cassandra a non essere mai creduta nei sui vaticini; Issione a girare in eterno su una ruota nella volta celeste. La percezione del tempo esiste e non esiste allo stesso tempo.
Bellissimi i dialoghi con Io e il Coro, parte centrale dell’opera. Prometeo compatisce ( nel senso latino del termine) la giovane provata dalle lunghe sofferenze proprio per questo le dona vaticini sul suo destino.
Egli è rassegnato alla sua punizione, ma non la subisce passivamente. Aspetta la sua liberazione, ormai già scritta.
Il finale è un climax…si sa cosa succederà e sentirlo arrivare e non vederlo descritto è un colpo da Maestro.

زئوس قصد داره انسانهارو نابود کنه ولی پرومته (یکی دیگه از خدایان) عاشق انسانهاست. برای نجاتشون چی کار میکنه؟ آتش رو براشون میبره تا از بین نرن. اما این کارش از نظر زئوس نافرمانی بزرگی محسوب میشه و برای مجازاتش دست و پاهاش رو زنجیر میکنه و عقابی رو مأمور میکنه که هر روز از جگرش بخوره🤐 این نمایشنامه از زمانی شروع میشه که قراره پرومته رو زنجیر کنن و شرح رنج و عذابیه که این طفلک کشیده.
من طبق معمول همیشه شگفت‌زده‌ام که آخه چطور ۴۰۰ سال قبل میلاد اینارو نوشتن که الان هم انقدر به روزه !! یکی از شیرین‌ترین نمایشنامه‌های یونان باستانی بود که خوندم. لذت بردم به معنی واقعی کلمه👌🏻 ترجمه‌های شاهرخ مسکوب که به فارسی فاخر هست کاملا فضای مناسبی رو برای کیف دو چندان کردن ایجاد میکنه و یه مقدمه طبق معمول عالی هم داره که بعد از تموم شدن نمایشنامه خوندمش.
