Candace McClosky thought the billionaire tycoon actually loved her and would help her save her family’s ranch. She fancied herself in love for the first time in her life.
She was a fool.
Now she’s stuck with even more problems and, as the oldest, she feels responsible for helping her sisters and saving their ranch.
So…she comes up with a desperate plan and pitches it to an even more desperate cowboy.
Jefferson Connelly is happy his brother fell in love, but he isn’t interested in having his life upended by matters of the heart.
When a woman he barely knows makes him the craziest offer he’s ever heard of he’s at the point in his life where he finds himself actually thinking it might not be a bad deal. And he’s willing to do a good deed.
For a ranch.
He wasn’t expecting God to use a tiny baby and a sullen teen to teach him the eternal lessons he needed in order to be a good husband.
Will he allow God’s refining fire to make him better? Or will he become bitter?
What is a hard working woman going to do when she is on the verge of losing her farm since her unexpected pregnancy will not allow her to work the fields and take care of the hogs. When her sister Esther gets married leaving her other sister Meg to take care of the farm, Candace McClosky knows it's going to be too much for her. At Esther's wedding, Candace knows she's going to need help to keep her farm and with not enough money to hire a farm hand, she sets in motion another plan. She pitches an offer to Jefferson Hutchison, the brother of her new brother-in-law, Monroe, that if he marries her in a marriage of convenience, she will give him her third of the farm. They are virtual strangers but there is something about him that she feels she can trust.
Jefferson Hutchison, has worked hard for his dad's harvesting company but has always had a dream to own his own farm. He has no plans to marry since his only experience with seeing that modeled was the failed marriage of his parents. When his mother just left her father and his six children for someone else- that had an impact on him making him leery of taking that step. When Candace makes him an offer of a third of her family's farm if she will marry him. He doesn't make a quick decision since if he says yes, he will take his vow seriously. He also wants more than just a marriage of convenience with a desire for more children.
I loved this story and the depth of commitment that Jefferson made to his marriage vows. his decision to not take lightly the words that he had spoken. These two virtual strangers would grow their relationship from a distance as Jefferson fulfilled his commitment to his father for the harvesting season. This man who had only a hard father as a model had so much compassion as he had a concern for a young teenager and his sister giving them a home.
This is another story by Jessie Gussman that shares the power of forgiveness and a second chance.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
Heartland Holidays is a story that will touch your heart. When the family farm is at stake, Meg, the oldest sister is willing to do anything to save it. When she comes up pregnant from believing a man that was never really interested in her, Meg is needing another way to get help in saving their farm. What better time than at Ester and Monroe's wedding to try to find an honest man to help them work their farm. Monroe has a slew of brothers and the one that Meg has decided to ask to marry her as a business proposition was Jefferson. Rugged, could do anything he put his mind too and would work till the job was done as he had worked since he was young on the harvest crew his daddy ran. He didn't do a lot of talking but Meg thought he was the best choice. And to Meg's excitement he agreed.
Jefferson tells Meg that he has already gave his daddy his word he will go on the harvest crew the end of the week. But he will tell his daddy to get a replacement as he is coming back to Meg in July before the baby is born to be with her as he doesn't want to be like his daddy, never there for his wife. Life doesn't always work as people figure it to be. God has everything in his control. When Jefferson gets the call at the first of July that Meg was in labor, earlier than her due date, he immediately leaves the harvest crew and drives as fast as he could to get to Meg. When he gets to her room a doctor is talking with her and Meg who is always the strong one is crying. Will whatever has happened be something that Meg and Jefferson can handle?
I received an ARC copy of this book and have gave my honest review.
Candace and Jefferson’s story is a sweet marriage of convenience turned love match romance. Knowing that she and her sisters will lose the family farm unless they get help, Candace proposes a marriage of convenience to Jefferson, a brother of Monroe whom she knows very well. Though they really don’t know each other, they will both benefit from the marriage. She will gain the help she needs for the farm, a husband to repair her reputation as well as a father figure for her unborn child. He will will have a stake in the farm and can use it as collateral to buy an adjacent farm, giving him the roots and home he has wanted for years. Both consider God’s plan for them and go into the marriage with the idea of making it last. Respecting each other, consulting each other before making decisions and communicating are what they have decided are necessary for their marriage to be successful. Love is not currently in the equation. Still there are a few surprises in store for both of them. They have two unexpected, but welcome additions to the family even before Candace gives birth. They also learn that if they open their hearts and follow God’s guidance, anything is possible ….even love in a marriage arranged for business reasons.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Bad decisions have put Candace in the position where losing the family ranch in the near future is not merely probable but certain. She can come up with only one way out: a marriage of convenience. With a man around the place who doesn't need to be paid a wage, they can get through the hard times. But will Jefferson, the man she's chosen, even agree? And if he does, can two virtual strangers really make a marriage work - especially with a baby on the way and the influences of their families?
This may be weird, but one of the things I particularly liked about this book was the way that Candace and Jefferson got to know each other largely long distance - which means over the phone, without the distraction of the physical side of a relationship. I feel like so many romances focus on the physical side almost to the exclusion of building a real, lasting friendship, so this was a nice change and well done. This story started off as an unusual and probably not ideal approach to marriage, and developed into a family that feels real, with a satisfying ending. I'm eager to see what comes next in the series! (Note that the books are all standalone romances, but with some common characters.) Recommended.
Note that I received a review copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
Candace is pregnant and with her out of action the sisters risk losing the family farm so she proposes a business arrangement to Jefferson. He was her sister's brother in law, with a reputation as being a hard worker and of good character - but her offer of her share of the family farm for his being willing to marry her and work on the farm to keep it afloat. Only problem (apart from the fact they had never spoken to each other prior to this conversation...) he was about to leave within days for 9 months work out of state. I loved the characters and how they kept their word, were committed to making their marriage a success (juggling priorities to work, family and medical issues) and worked at communicating while apart, until they first became friends then attracted then in love. It could be said that Jefferson was a bit too perfect and things went a bit too smoothly in their relationship, but who doesn't like a HEA? I received an ARC but this review is my own. Looking forward to the next in the series!
Jessie Gussman is one of my favorite authors for clean romance with HEA endings, and she came through with this heartwarming love story about Candace and Jefferson. When Candace trusted the wrong man and became pregnant and he walked out on he, she was alone and about to lose the farm she and her sisters owned after their parents were killed in an accident. She came up with a business proposition to ask her brother-in-law's brother, Jefferson, to marry her to help her save her farm and give her baby a father. They had hardly ever talked to each other before but Jefferson decided to go through with it. During the wedding ceremony when they had their first kiss, they both realized that their marriage would be more than a business proposition. When the baby girl, Rosie, was born prematurely with a birth defect love blossomed for both of them. They also took in two homeless children they found out about. The characters were likeable. I loved this book and highly recommend it for a clean Christian romance. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Candace was in so much trouble. She felt the weight of responsibility for keeping her family’s farm afloat but she knew she couldn’t keep working as hard as she needed to—not when she was pregnant and the baby’s biological dad wanted nothing more to do with her. She was desperate so she proposed marriage to Jefferson, a neighbor who worked on his dad’s harvest crew. They looked at it as a business arrangement with the terms all laid out in advance so expectations could be managed. As they both set forth in good faith to fulfill their side of the contract, something amazing and unexpected began to happen—feelings of admiration and affection began to grow between them. Is love just a feeling or is it an action verb? I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out. It was very thought-provoking. I received an early reader copy from the author and this voluntary review contains my honest opinions.
• This story caught my interest right away and kept it until the very end. I was really immersed in Candace's and Jefferson's love story.
• Jefferson, really tries to come out of his non-communicative personality. He wants to improve himself and become more aware of other people's feelings, so he can have a successful relationship with Candace.
• I loved the Christian themes in this novella and the relationship wisdom that Jefferson used to try and make his marriage more than a business arrangement and one with depth. It's wisdom that married couples, families, and all individuals could use.
I was given an advance copy of this book by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I really enjoyed reading this book by Jessie Gussman and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
My ex-husband’s family operated combines and travelled the country for months, much like the Hutchinson family. I know the problems that creates in families. Jessie Gussman writes as one who understands that lifestyle and the problems that goes with it. I can only imagine Jefferson’s shock when Candace asks him to marry her. He barely knows her name, he even wonders if his brother is possibly the father of her unborn baby. This story keeps you involved, there are so many questions to be answered. Where will they live, how can they make their sudden expanded “family” work, will Jefferson be able to make it back before the baby comes, so many questions that need answers. I have enjoyed this series and this book is a good addition. No pressure, but I’m really looking forward to the next one.
Jefferson was quite astonished when he realized that he actually was willing to accept Candace’s proposal to get married. Even though she is pregnant from another man’s child, and they don’t know each other! I think we are several to have bad examples, know where we want to be different or, in rarer instances, similar to what we experienced growing up. Our childhood all molds us into the persons we are today. That is exactly what Jefferson is going through, just that he never really had the time to adjust to the idea of being a husband or becoming a father as he is thrown into that role within a day of Candace’s proposition. Enjoy reading another story in which the man has a strong character (the woman as well ☺) and is willing to put in the work so that his marriage can blossom.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love a great Jessie Gussman novel. Heartland Holidays doesn't disappoint. Candace is such an interesting character! She's truly working on saving their farm, but she goes about it in such an interesting way - causing some trouble for herself. Enter Jefferson. Jefferson is a totally stand-up guy and buys into Candace's scheme. He enters their agreement in a spirit of having it all and making it everything both of them ever wanted. I love how he steps up and creates a beautiful life for not only Candace and her sisters, but also for two orphans - all the while keeping his word to his dad. This book has some ups and downs - life isn't always rosy (baby Rose). I do love the decision making process and how each character strengthens their relationship with God. What a great book!
Loved Candace and Jefferson's story. Candace was always looking out for her sisters. And when it looked like they may lose the farm she makes a business arrangement with Jefferson. With everything laid out, she's expecting, marry her, be her babies Father and they will have other children. All Jefferson needs to do is help keep the farm. Biggest wrench in Candace's proposal, Jefferson has a job out of town all summer. I loved reading how Jefferson made extra efforts even long-distance, to be considerate of Candace. I laughed, and gasped while reading. If you like clean heartfelt stories, I highly recommend 'Heartland Holidays', I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.
I'm a sucker for an inspiring marriage of convenience trope! The ones that Jessie Gussman writes are so full of hope and unselfish love that it inspires me to be a better person in all my relationships, not just my marriage.
When people put one another first and really try to please God, magical things happen. Certainly, they happen in this book. While recognizing that life will still be difficult, the characters in this book also come to realize that they can have love to sustain them through those difficult times; love and faith in God.
I truly enjoy Jessie Gussman's books because they all share the traits of espousing unselfish romantic love and of putting God first.
Sometimes the marriage of convenience trope can be a bit annoying or unbelieveable. That was not the case in this book! Candace proposes a marriage of convenience to Jefferson even though she doesn't know much of anything about him except he is a brother to Candace's new brother in law. She has no expectations of love, knowing that mainly she is offering her portion of the farm to him in order to save the whole farm. Oh, and he would be a dad to her unborn baby. You won't be disappointed if you pick up this book. It hilights what so many people forget, that love is a choice you make every day when you are married. It isn't easy but with mutual respect, it is absolutely doable! I received an e-copy of this book from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.
As with any Jessie Gussman book you pick up, you know it will be a good read. I haven't found one of hers that I did not like.
This book started out a little different than some of the others I have read. Candace is at her sister's wedding and wants to save her ranch so she asks one of the groom's brothers if he would marry her. She offers him a third of the ranch if he says yes and follows through with the wedding. She also tells him that he can take her third that she's giving him and buying the neighboring ranch if he wants too.
I really enjoyed the book and I loved listening to it in audio. As usual Jay did an awesome job and listened to it without taking many breaks. They make a great pair and I can't wait to listen to more stories by her and narrated by Jay Dyess.
Candace loved a man in a business suit. But, when the "suit" disappointed her when she needed him most, she needed to find a man who was dependable and loyal. She didn't need love but she did need someone who could help her save her family's farm and help to raise the baby she was expecting.
When Candace proposed a marriage of convince to Jefferson, he wasn't sure this would ever be a marriage of love but he could consider a marriage of convenience.
This is another wonderful addition to the Heartland Cowboy Christmas series. The story is sweet and clean. It is a story of loyalty and how love can grow over time to be a forever kind of love.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
Jefferson and Candace marries for convenience but they quickly decide that they want more and then love enters the picture and the magic happens. They have so much love to give that they give it freely to some children in need and they become part of the family. I love the marriage of convenience stories and then bring in the kids and I’m a goner. Part of the story had me worried at the end, I wasn’t expecting that but I love not knowing everything that’s going to happen. Jessie Gussman has done a fantastic job, I felt so much love throughout this story. “I received ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.”
I have mixed feelings about this book in this series. Candance has a hard action to take to save the family ranch after she gets pregnant. She asks Jackson to marry her. They don't know each other hardly at all. They do come to love each other & establish a Christian home. God can take our failures & bring good out of them as this story reveals. God is a loving, forgiving, good God. His plan is for us to choose to be obedient to Him & stay away from getting pregnant outside of marriage but He can make a bad situation good when we make the wrong choice. I received an ARC. This is my voluntary opinion.
I had an ARC for this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Candace approaches Jefferson at her sister’s wedding and proposes to him. She needs to save her family farm and provide for her coming baby whose father is not in the picture. Jefferson isn’t interested in marriage, but seriously considers her proposition. He’s quiet and questions whether he can be a good father. Jessie Gussman includes homeless children, an unplanned pregnancy, and a desire for his own ranch to highlight the plot of this uplifting book. A must read.
Another great book in the series. Good clean storyline with God fearing characters. Candice who is pregnant and unmarried has her eyes on Jefferson with an unusual proposition. She asks him to marry her in return for her third of the family farm. Jefferson doesn’t have a lot of experience around women but he knows he doesn’t want to hurt Candice. His experience is women leave after they offer love. Can a marriage of convenience last? Can these two find a way to be a real family? *I received this book for free for my unbiased review.
Jessie has done it again. Each book she writes keeps getting better. Candace and Jefferson’s journey to their love is amazing. From practically strangers to a marriage of convenience, their first kiss (WOW) to falling deeply in love. And throughout this love story, Jessie weaves the inspirational thread of following God and giving everything into His hands. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend this and all of her books. I received a free copy of this book and this is my voluntary, honest review.
This was a great story with characters you couldn’t help falling in love with. You have a mother to be that hasn’t always made the right choices, but she has decided there is no right or wrong, she has made and needs to follow through on. She wants to get married to….. someone she barely knows. Her daughter will need a dad and she needs to save her farm and her family’s legacy.
Follow the ups and downs of this story, try not to fall in love with their story and them. You’ll fail, I promise you.
I received an advance review copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Jessie Gussman has some interesting ways for her characters to meet. In this book, a pregnant Candace, anxious to save the family farm asks Jefferson to marry her. Incredibly, he agrees and they both take their vows seriously. But although they have a quick wedding, he has other obligations and he intends to meet them. Then Candace's life becomes even more complicated.
This is a sweet love story about two people who make a business deal/marriage a serious undertaking and they fall in love in the process.
This family, community and series in general has been so much fun. Poor Candace has created herself a mess and proposing to a stranger is either the smartest or the dumbest thing she’s ever done. Jefferson wants a farm and is very tempted but is he ready? The story is so good. I absolutely loved how they fell in love. Definitely not a cookie cutter romance. I really love that Jessie writes stories about falling in love with a person and not with a perfect body or gorgeous face. I highly recommend this story.
Candace has no one to blame but herself. She thought he really loved her and now she is pregnant and alone. It's her turn to find someone to marry her and accept her baby as their own. She has decided to proposition Jefferson with a business deal to benefit them both.
Jefferson has always wanted his own farm. No longer working for his father, but for himself. When Candace suggests a business deal where they get married and he has one third of their farm.
Can they make this work or was it all a mistake? ~
I enjoyed this book by Jessie Gussman. I thought it was a sweet marriage of convenience story and I loved how the characters developed and grew to love each other. I liked seeing how the relationship grew as they got to know each other and as they took the time to work together. I also liked how they were there for each other during the hard times and were able to strengthen each other.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I loved Jefferson he was outstanding. I enjoyed Jefferson and Candace story so much the characters were great and so realistic. This marriage for convenience piece had a slow start as they got to know each other and it was so interesting to see how they grew closer. Things are not easy for them as they had to deal with some serious issues and everything came to a head at the end of the book. It is a very good book and I highly recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I listened to the audio of this book. I've read or listened to all of the books in this series and while I enjoyed this one, it has been my least favorite for reasons noted below.
I feel like even though it was a marriage of convenience, They should have got to know each other a little more or something. It just all happened so quick and they really didn't know each other at all. Additionally, There was a lot of secrecy on her part about the baby and I feel like any husband to be would want some details before a wedding.
Jay Dyess did his usual excellent job with the narrative.
