A Fairy Garden Mystery #3

A Hint of Mischief

Rate this book
The proprietor of a fairy garden and tea shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Courtney Kelly has an occasional side gig as a sleuth--with a sprinkling of magical assistance. . . .

Courtney has thrown a few fairy garden parties--for kids. But if a local socialite is willing to dip into her trust fund for an old sorority sister's fortieth birthday bash, Courtney will be there with bells on. To make the job even more appealing, a famous actress, Farrah Lawson, is flying in for the occasion, and there's nothing like a celebrity cameo to raise a business's profile.

Now Courtney has less than two weeks to paint a mural, hang up tinkling windchimes, plan party games, and conjure up all the details. While she works her magic, the hostess and her girlfriends head off for an indulgent spa day--which leads to a fateful facial for Farrah, followed by her mysterious death. Could the kindhearted eyebrow waxer who Farrah berated in public really be the killer, as the police suspect? Courtney thinks otherwise, and with the help of her imaginative sleuth fairy, sets out to dig up the truth behind this puzzling murder . . .

A Hint of Mischief is the 3rd book in the Fairy Garden Mysteries written by Daryl Wood Gerber. I've read the previous two novels in this series and several of her other ones in the past; I enjoy her writing style, character development, and charming settings. This latest installment in her slightly fantastical cozy mystery series shines brightly and shows why she's been a favorite in the genre. Protagonist Courtney runs a fairy garden and tea shop in a seaside California town, where her fairy, Fiona, helps her solve strange and sometimes deadly crimes around town. In this caper, a local celebrity is throwing a birthday party for a sorority sister, and several out-of-town friends come for a visit. Unfortunately, one of them ends up dead, and the suspect list is rather long. Spa drama. Husband-stealing antics. Best friend tirades. So many possible connections!

Gerber's magic appears in her words and her brilliant imagery. I'm not knowledgeable about fairies nor do I typically love the fantasy genre; however, these tales are balanced well, relying on a solid mystery and strong character plight, which makes them easy to read and generally filled with a range of dimensions. Supporting Courtney are her friends and family, each with sad and happy backstories of their own. I find myself rooting for her and a former high school friend, now a local chef, to fall in love. I am also excited to meet more of the fairies, especially given Fiona's latest milestone (achieving a new pair of wings). What could Gerber have in store for us in this wonderful collection? I'll eagerly await the next book and encourage other readers to give this one a chance... until it's ready and I can find out for myself!

This is the third book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series and it continues to get better. I really like the bit of whimsy mixed in with the mystery. I did think it took a little time to get to the mystery in this one, but once we got there I thought it’s as an interesting one. I did think there was one clue in particular that had me convinced of the murderer earlier than I normally decide but it was a fun mystery either way. Courtney is asked to throw a fairy party for a bunch of grown women which is a little different, but she’s excited to do it. The women went to college together and Courtney realizes they have secrets and drama that has followed them. Courtney also has to deal with the ex that dumped her and his new wife visiting her town. I really liked the very end and the promise it gives for another book.

Fiona is a righteous fairy to Courtney, Misty Dawn wants to throw a fairy theme birthday party for her friend, Odine Oakes owner of Fantasy Awaits specializing in jewelry. Misty has invited her classmates from college to help with the celebration. She has asked Courtney to put the party together.. There is a lot of tension between the women. Farrah Lawson, a famous actress is murdered. Courtney and her assistant, Joss Timberlake try to figure out who killed her. There are several things going on. ,Courtney's relationship with her boyfriend, Brady Cash, owner of Hideaway Cafe, who is shoplifting the stores and the mystery of the fairy doors popping up over the town. The reader is taken on a journey of betrayal, jealousy and heartbreak. The ending builds up with the discovery of the murderer to a happy and fun ending.

A Hint of Mischief by Daryl Wood Gerber is an enchanting cozy mystery. We return to Carmel-by-the Sea where Courtney Kelly owns Open Your Imagination. The town is full of quaint shops (I want to visit and check out all the shops in the various courtyards). It was nice to catch up with Courtney, Joss, Fiona, Megan, Pixie, and Brady. There is a helpful list of the characters at the beginning of the book. I thought A Hint of Mischief was well-written with great characters. I like the author’s engaging writing style. I found myself drawn into story. I love the fairies in the story and that Courtney can see them. Fiona adds humor to the story. I like that we get to learn more about the fairies (the various types) and their capabilities. There is one main mystery and two side mysteries. Misty Dawn hires Courtney to organize an adult fairy birthday party for one of her sorority sisters. When one of the party goers ends up dead, Courtney with help from her righteous fairy begins investigating. This was a well-plotted mystery. I had fun following the investigation and solving the crime. One of the clues was cleverly done. Courtney needs to work on her questioning technique (be less obvious because she does not want to alienate her neighbors). There are several suspects, a red herring or two, and helpful clues. The mystery is nicely wrapped up with all of the questions answered. Someone is stealing from the shops in town. Courtney intends to discover who is behind the thefts. Fairy doors are appearing around Carmel-by-the-Sea. No one knows who is installing the fairy doors. I enjoyed the fairy party planning. Joss and Courtney came up with some clever ideas. I love the fairy gardens that were created by Courtney and customers in Open your Imagination. It gave me inspiration. I like how the romance is progressing between Courtney and Brady. I like that they are not rushing things. I loved the epilogue where we learn something special. While A Hint of Mischief is the third A Fairy Garden Mystery, it can be read as a standalone. The author provides the necessary background information. There is a preview of A Flicker of a Doubt which is the next A Fairy Garden Mystery at the end plus there are recipes for some of the treats featured in the story (Brookies, Chocolate Crinkles, Fairy Cookies). A Hint of Mischief is a magical mystery with flitting fairies, fabulous fairy gardens, a slain sorority sister, a playful Pixie, baffling fairy doors, covert thefts, and a curious Courtney.

“A Hint of Mischief ” by Daryl Wood Gerber the 3rd instalment in “A Fairy Garden Mystery" series. I think this was my favourite so far, I love catching up with Courtney, Fiona her righteous fairy, Joss and Meagan and Pixie. Plus I love all the recipes at the back of the book! Courtney Kelly, the owner of a fairy-gardening and tea shop in Carmel, California. It’s a special place brimming with good vibes and the kind of magical assistance its proprietor will need to prepare for an old sorority sister’s birthday bash awhile solving a puzzling murder!

I found the story to be very entertaining as well as full of twists to keep you guessing till the very end. I’m also liking where things are going between Courtney and Brady …

I’m anxiously awaiting for the next instalment as I want to know if Fiona gets her wings as well as learn more about the other fairies as it seems lots of people have them even if they can’t see them.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Courtney Kelly, owner of a fairy garden shop is used to throwing fairy themed parties for kids. But a local socialite wants to hire her to throw a fairy themed party for one of her friends' fortieth birthday in two weeks. Courtney decides to embrace the challenge. When one of the famous guest is found dead Courtney gets pulled into the investigation to clear the name of the innocent person accused of murder.

I love this series. Fiona the fairy is my favorite character. I love how she is evolving and growing into an adult fairy over the series. I am also enjoying seeing Courtney and Brady getting closer. The setting of the fairy garden store is fun and charming. The mystery is well plotted with plenty of red herrings to throw the reader off who really was behind the murder. There are recipes included in the book for those who enjoy baking/cooking. I recommend this book to cozy/fantasy fans.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.

A HINT OF MISCHIEF is the third book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series by Daryl Wood Gerber. This charming and magical tale combines the best of cozy mysteries: a well-plotted murder, delightful characters, and an inviting setting. And I can’t overlook the cover… it’s magic all on its own. With a wide cast of characters, both human and fairy alike, the author thoughtfully provides a list at the front of the book for easy reference. But despite the number, Ms. Gerber does an admirable job with unique descriptions and the ability to make each character come to life on the pages. I also like how she opens each chapter with a literary quote about a fairy—who knew there were so many mentions out there?!

The protagonist, Courtney Kelly, is owner of the adorable shop, Open Your Imagination, in Carmel-by-the-Sea in coastal California. The garden shop specializing in creating fairy gardens gives Courtney plenty of opportunities to teach customers how to craft their own fairy gardens, which readers can replicate at home. And stealing each scene she inhabits is Courtney’s adorable fairy, Fiona. Ms. Gerber’s detailed description of Fiona and all her fairy folk, brings magic to the pages and makes it entirely believable that fairies do exist.

While all the charming characters and the fairy garden shop might seem to make the reader forget that this is a murder mystery, the author starts the action from the very first page, which sets the pace for the book. She does an admirable job of weaving everyday work and play into the untimely death of a celebrity in town, who came to celebrate an old friend’s birthday. With the large gathering of sorority sisters for the birthday, there are plenty of suspects to go around. Except, fingers point toward a local young woman with a troubled past, who the celebrity gets into an altercation with. Courtney and Fiona jump into the investigation, intent on finding the real killer. Ms. Gerber expertly doles the clues out and leads the reader on a chase to find the truth. Courtney, at times, can be a bit overly forward in delving into the truth, but her tenacity is rewarded. Fiona is more actively involved in the investigation this time, which adds to the overall appeal and I’m happy to know that another Fairy Garden Mystery is in the works!

While this might be a fairy garden book, there are plenty of mouthwatering dishes being served at the garden tea, at the birthday party, and at Courtney’s boyfriend’s restaurant. If you’ve read any of Ms. Gerber’s other books, you’ll know that she is an excellent cook and provides almost mini cookbooks with each mystery. A Hint of Mischief is no different with plenty of yummy recipes to choose from.

I was provided with an advance review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Hint of Mischief by Daryl Wood Gerber is the third book in her Fairy Garden cozy mystery series. It was an enjoyable read that kept me turning the pages.

Courtney once again inserts herself into a murder investigation in her hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea when a famous actress, who is visiting a customer of her shop, is poisoned. I found Courtney to be a little to assertive and abrasive this time as she questions people. The people she was questioning were merely acquaintances who she had just recently met. The story was smoothly paced with several twists and enough red herrings that I honestly didn't have a clue who had done the deed until the chapter before the dramatic reveal. The mystery was well crafted, the secondary characters are delightful and I was glad to see that Courtney and Brady's romance is beginning to blossom.

I voluntarily reviewed a digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Publishing via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

I like this author but this is the first book I've read in this series. Even though it's the third one in the series, the cast of characters at the beginning of the book is very helpful. I have mixed feelings about the book. I like how the friends in the town stick together. I also enjoyed learning about fairy gardens, which I was unfamiliar with before reading this book.

Courtney is an interesting character and a good friend. As an amateur sleuth, she has a tendency to jump to conclusions, skipping from one potential suspect to another, and making everyone angry. The fairies play a large role in the story, which I hadn't expected. Sometimes I thought the magic was fun and at other times, it didn't seem to fit with the murder mystery. The story drags in the middle with nothing really moving forward with either the official police case or Courtney's unofficial investigation. Things pick up, though, as Courtney gets closer to the truth. I really enjoyed the ending of both the case and developments in Courtney's personal life, so I will check out other books in this whimsical series. 3.5 stars

I enjoyed the first two books in this series and was so excited to receive a copy of book 3 to review. A Hint Of Mischief has a lot going on in terms of character development (both with the human characters/relationships and the fairies) as well as a murder and 2 mini-mysteries: one about fairy doors and one about thefts.

One thing I really liked about this one was getting to learn more about the fairies and what they can do. It's such a fun and whimsical element to the story and really adds a lot to the series. While I really liked this book, it did feel at times like the story wasn't moving as quickly as it should. The pacing felt slowed down and I think that is because there was too much going on. There was the murder with so many suspects (and Courtney flat-out accusing some people of murder, which I didn't feel was true to her character), the fairy doors, the thefts, the relationships, the fairy party planning, and more. It just felt like the story was getting in its own way because so much was fit into it.

That being said, after the first third of the book or so, the pacing picked up a bit and the story felt like it was really taking off. There were so many suspects with viable reasons to kill Farrah that I didn't know for sure who did it, though I had my suspicions. I couldn't wait to find out more about the fairy doors and to see Fiona grow as a fairy and keep earning her adult wings. This is a solid series and enjoyable if you love a bit of paranormal/magic. I have so much fun when reading these books - I even took pictures of this one when I went to a fairy shop. :) Definitely worth reading and I do recommend reading this series in order to get the most enjoyment out of it.

I received a copy for review and am sharing my honest review; my opinion is not influenced in any way.

Wonderful third book in the series! Magical and delightful all around! I enjoy Courtney's take on life and how she is with both humans and fairies. Fiona is maturing into an even better fairy and I hope to read more of her tales in the future! The mystery in this one had me going back and forth. There were nice curveballs thrown in to keep the reader guessing. Overall this was a fun read and I'm glad I own it so I can go back to it in the future!

After reading this book, the third in the “Fairy Garden Mystery” series, you will want to see a fairy and have one of your own! A Hint of Mischief will make you believe in fairies and other things that are supposed to be myths. With a birthday party for a famous actress, a murder, and the introduction of another quirky fairy, readers will be enthralled.

Actress Farrah Lawson is a friend and former classmate of Misty who has hired Courtney to throw a fairy garden party for another classmate's birthday party, which Farrah will be attending. It seemed odd, an adult fairy party, but Courtney rarely turns down a playing client. The arrangements are in full swing when the birthday girl, the actress, and the rest of Misty’s guests arrive. But when a spa day turns ugly, Courtney ends up in the middle of another murder investigation.

The characters in this series are a combination of nature-loving, fairy-loving hard-working individuals. They are always a joy to read about and bring fans a new look at fantasy life. The setting of a fairy garden center is where any garden lover would want to spend a few hours, and if they get to see a fairy or maybe a famous actress, all the better. Every time I read a book in this series, I want to run out and open a fairy-inspired garden center of my own. In this newest installment to the series, the murder victim is loved and hated; readers may even feel a twinge of satisfaction when they learn what type of person the victim really was when she was killed.

There is strong evidence to follow, and figuring out who the killer is won’t take readers long, but the unveiling will have you holding your breath until the very end. The suspects keep Courtney on her toes; between the demanding actress, the rest of the party guests, and Misty, she doesn’t have a moment to spare. With a motive as old as time itself, A Hint of Mischief will keep you happy and filled with wonder. One day who knows, maybe we will all get to see a fairy, but if not, at least we can enjoy reading about them and hoping.

This has quickly become a favorite series for me. Courtney is wonderful to follow along with. She could easily be a BFF and that is before you add the fairy gardens as well as the fairies themselves. This time she is hired to put together a party for a socialites fortieth birthday. Add in a famous person and things get interesting. When she turns up dead Courtney has to look into things. Add in her magical fairy network to really make things good. I was hooked from page one and unable to stop until I hit the very end. I can not wait to see what happens next time. A truly magical must read for cozy fans. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

A Hint of Mischief is the third instalment in Daryl Wood Gerber's 'A Fairy Garden Mystery' series. I've also read a few of the author's books from her 'Cookbook Nook Mystery series'.

In this fabulous cosy mystery, Courtney Kelly owns a magical fairy garden shop and tearoom, called Open Your Imagination, based in the small town of Carmel, California. She has been able to see the fairies from a very young age but there are some sceptics who don't have her ability. She teaches garden design and sells everything from fairy figurines to tinkling wind chimes and it's the perfect place for her book club teas. Courtney is putting together a posh fortieth birthday fairy garden party, requested by Misty for a former sorority friend, Odine Oates and she has only two weeks to prepare. A famous actress, Farrah Lawson will join in the fun but things go awry as there are minor thefts and upsets. Then Farrah is found dead from poison, following an unsatisfactory eyebrow wax. Courtney's fairy friend lends a hand in sorting through alibis and apprehending the murderer.

The writing style of Daryl Wood Gerber continues to impress and even with the plethora of cast members, the story is easy to follow. Narrator Courtney is a great character and I love her determination and her singlemindedness. The whodunit aspect was great with plenty of opportunities for the most diligent of armchair detectives to play along. Every clue led to a revelation and I really liked the way things were all wrapped up. This tremendously enchanting novel was a hit for me and I am looking forward to reading book four. If you adore a fantastic cosy mystery with a strong dose of magical realism, don't miss out on A Hint of Mischief.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

A Hint of Mischief is the third book in Daryl Wood Gerber's Fairy Garden Mysteries.

I love this series and while it can be read as a standalone, I think that more enjoyment will be had if you read the other books in the series.

This book is such a wonderful, fantastic well written magical tale.

Courtney Kelly owns the fairy garden and tea shop in Carmel-By-The-Sea.
There is a murder, and this isn't the first one that Courtney gets involved in.

I really love reading about the fairies and the magical fairy garden.

The characters are beautifully drawn with a well written intricate mystery.

I look forward to more books in this series.

I received a free copy from the publisher through Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it.

This is the third book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series, as I read the first two books and enjoyed them I requested this one as well. Like most cozies this one has a mix of the more daily life/ work plot lines as well as a mystery. In the case of this book I really enjoyed the daily life and work plot lines, but the mystery one less so unfortunately.

I love the original theme of this series. It's so fun to read about Courtney's business surrounding fairy gardens. Then there are the actual fairies as well. It makes for a fun and unique theme. I enjoy reading about the store and Courtney's love for fairy gardens. In this book she has to organize a fairy themed party that I enjoyed reading about. Although with all the build up for the party, I thought the actual party didn't have as much impact as I had expected. There is more we see of Fiona as well as some other fairies. There's a small side plot line surrounding fairy doors that someone is creating and Courtney tries to spot them all and figure out who's creating them.

Then on the mystery side there is one of the people who got invited for the party who gets murdered. Courtney being involved in the party planning and knowing all the suspects gets involved. Someone she knows is a suspect and Courtney wants to help her. There's also a mystery with a thief and a missing manuscript. For some reason the mystery didn't grip me. I checked and it seems I had the same problem with the second book apparently. I just wasn't as invested in who had done it.

I felt the book and especially the mystery was a bit slow at times, there wasn't as much progress especially around the middle part of the book. Then all the red herrings and suspects and motives all get resolved in the last part of the book. When I took some time to think through the suspects I was able to guess the murderer right and strangely enough the logic I used for my reasoning wasn't one the main character used. I thought the clue the main character used to figure out who had done it wasn't as clear as a clue. I was a bit bothered by how Courtney basically accused everyone of murder until she finally confronted the right person. It just felt kinda rude how she accuses everyone. I also thought it felt a bit too easy how half of the time the fairies where the reason a suspect talked.

I liked reading about Courtney herself and her interactions with her friends and her Fairy Fiona. The romance with Brady also continues a bit. There is a small bit with her ex being back in town, but I wasn't quite sure what the point of that was. There was little drama luckily, but even so I felt it didn't really add to the book.

To summarize: This series has a fun and unique theme about fairy gardens and fairies. I enjoy reading about it and Courtney's daily life and work. Unfortunately the mystery didn't really grip me. It felt slow in places and I wasn't as invested. I managed to guess the murderer right. It felt a bit off to me how the main character figured out the murderer. I thought it was kinda rude how she accused almost every suspect at the end of the book before resolving why they weren't the murderer. I also felt that there were some plot lines with the thief, the missing manuscript and the ex back in town that didn't add as much to the story. So this was a bit of a mixed one for me, the daily life, work and fairies plots are fun to me, but the mystery didn't fully grip me.

It’s summertime; and a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea is calling me! Sadly, I cannot physically visit, but reading A Hint of Mischief, Book 3, in the Fairy Garden Mystery series, takes me there instead. Daryl Wood Gerber crafts amazing descriptions that place me upon the winding paths through alleyways or within the walled backyard gardens.

I’ve read Books 1 & 2, as well, and quickly became a fan because while reading this series I feel lighter…ready and willing to embrace the whimsical. It’s as though I stepped into an alternate universe and find myself in a gentler, scenic location (that includes murder), where colors are more vivid, sounds heightened, pleasing aromas wafting at every turn…I just want to be immersed there and never leave.

Courtney Kelly creates a similar atmosphere for her customers at Open Your Imagination. People visit the shop and return to it to spend time imagining, crafting, embracing the whimsy…often, the world does not seem to provide enough places that allows that. The interaction with Fiona, her fairy, does not seem implausible, instead enviable. I enjoy reading about the interest, willingness, and growth of other central characters to believe and see fairies as well. And a fairy assistant to help solve the crimes, well who wouldn’t embrace that sidekick!

Leave your adult skepticism behind and read this with the mind-set of the child who clapped furiously for Tinker Bell's recovery. There are fairies and magic within and that's okay. Courtney Kelly can see and talk to the fairies and is usually accompanied by Fiona the fairy. Fiona is a fledgling fairy, so to speak, still earning her adult wings, but she's smart, attentive, and caring. You know, the sort of fairy we'd all love to know have our back. A fairy may not be able to make things happen but they can calm and suggest, I guess you could say, and that proves helpful as Courtney tries to solve the mystery of actress Farrah Lawson.

The whimsy of Courtney's fairy inhabited world is shattered with Farrah's murder. Who did it? Why? Was it a jealous boyfriend? The husband of one of her friend's that she once had an affair with? And, what's with the fairy doors that keep appearing in the neighborhood. They're darling and imaginative, but who is creating them? It definitely isn't the fairies. Then there are the thefts? Is their any particular significance to the items that are taken? Are they connected to the murder? What is Courtney's former fiance's role? Will Courtney and Brad ever get serious? Will Courtney's tendency to be, well, snoopy get her in trouble? Of course, it will. This is a cozy mystery, after all, even if Fiona is hovering about.

Despite the slow, to me, start and that Courtney was able to rely on her fairy's magic too frequently for my liking, I found this a fun, whimsical read. Leave your adult cares behind and open a fairy garden door and see how this tale of fairies, fairy rules and stipulations, human greed and betrayal, and human weaknesses all come into play.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for the invite into the fairy garden and mystery. Now I want to see a fairy garden.

I love a good cozy mystery, but the fairy aspect of these stories delights me with a childlike glee! I so want to go put fairy doors around my neighborhood and see if anyone notices! The characters are well developed and when I read these stories, I feel like I am hanging out with friends rather than following characters in a story. I think that is the main aspect of following any series that I like most, is that you get to know the characters so well especially in a cozy mystery. You not only become closely acquainted with the characters, but the town and businesses as well. In this case, Who knew owning a plant and fairy garden store would lead to searching for killers, but Courtney must find out who the killer is before a friend's daughter is wrongly accused and convicted. I absolutely can't wait to read the next book in the series. In the meantime, I think I need to create my own fairly garden!

I received an advance copy via NetGalley.

A Hint of Mischief is a modern cozy mystery set in Carmel, California that follows Courtney, a shopkeeper who makes and sells fairy gardens, and who really can see and speak with fairies. Her resident fairy, Fiona, help her as she meddles with murders and intrigue around Carmel. The fantasy element is light and fluffy. There's no big worldbuilding here--the fairies are pretty much the pop culture standard.

This is the third book in the series but I had no issues at all getting into the mystery. There is a massive cast of residents and visitors to town; normally, I have trouble keeping track of a lot of names, but the author did an excellent job of adding physical descriptions and hints to help me track who is who. (I wasn't surprised to find out the writer has experience with many mystery novels--it shows). There's a light romantic subplot, too.

This book focuses on Courtney's contract job to make an elaborate fairy garden party for a group of forty-something sorority sisters with a lot of drama. When one of the guests ends up dead, Courtney can't abide that a friend is under suspicion, so she begins her own investigation. There were two aspects that grated on me: 1) the murder victim is famous, and yet there's no mention of media attention at all, and it's not like the matter is kept secret. 2) Courtney is... well, rather obnoxious. She's not a listen-and-watch quiet kind of amateur sleuth, but the kind who is nosey and pushy. It's a wonder she has any friends; I sure wouldn't want to associate with her unless she could help me evade suspicion of murder!

That said, I liked the book overall. I loved the setting of Carmel, and the author does a great job of making the small town feel vibrant and fun. Fairy gardens make for a unique angle for a series and I enjoyed learning more about them. The fairy themselves are pleasant, and I do appreciate when the sleuth is a cat lover. I'd be willing to read more in the series to see if the sleuth is more likeable under other circumstances.

A local socialite has asked Courtney to put together a fairy garden party for the birthday of one of her sorority sisters and she is happy to take her money. It doesn't hurt that Farrah Lawson, a famous actress, will also be attending the party. Courtney has only two weeks to prepare for the upcoming festivities but with a little help from some friends she is sure everything will get taken care of. Meanwhile the sorority sisters are off for a spa day hoping for some relaxation. Farrah decides on a getting a facial which ends up being her last. She was rude to the staff, could one of them have killed her? Courtney decides she must find out who the killer is and in doing so learns that Farrah had quite a few enemies. Follow along as Courtney and her fairy friends put the puzzle pieces together in hopes of figuring out who the killer might be. This is such a charmingly magical series that will have you hunting through your own garden looking for fairies. I can't wait to see where the magic will take me next!

If for no other reason than making me smile with the cute names of the fictional shops, I love reading this series. How can you not chuckle at Seize the Clay, Aunt Teeks (say that one out loud), and Wizard of Paws? And for the most part, the characters are just as endearing. Courtney Kelly is running a fairy garden shop and is surrounded by friends, fairies, and felines. (a few canines too) Work keeps her on her toes as do the various events in her little town and her involvement in the training of a young fairy, Fiona. This story introduced a lot of new characters to help lay the groundwork for the murder and it got to be a bit confusing at times since there was a lot of activity with the recurring characters. But this kept the overall series story going and left several threads for readers to pick up in the next book!

Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.

This is the third book in the fairy garden series. Courtney is in charge of a fairy garden party for a 40th birthday. Things take a turn when one of the guests is found dead and Courtney starts to investigate. Fiona is the perfect fairy and I love all the other fairies in the book. The mystery was ok. I didn't guess the killer until the end. Wasn't my favorite book but it was still enjoyable.

Another joyous book down!
I love following everyone's growth in this story. Fiona getting her adult wings, Courtney and Brady's relationship, it's all so sweet and cozy, truly made up for the cozy mystery genre.

And such a cliffhanger!
If I didn't want to savour the last book (so far!) I'd jump into it right now.

Maybe I will. I'm not that good at holding back 😊

A Hint of Mischief is the third book in Daryl Wood Gerber’s Fairy Garden Mystery novel series, and the story continues with Courtney being commissioned to throw a fairy garden party for a sorority sister’s 40th birthday. What she has no idea is that it will be the precursor to murder. But with the help of her fairy friend and her other friends around her Courtney will piece together the puzzle as to why someone would want a famous movie star dead.
A Hint of Mischief is the first book that I have read in this series, but I have to admit that I enjoyed this book quite a bit. While all or most of the relationships between the characters have been established at this point, the author takes into consideration that some readers might just be diving into this series. The details included in just the right places make this story thoroughly engaging. I liked being filled in on certain information concerning characters so that I could still enjoy the book.
The mystery of the murder is truly well done. I kept trying to piece together who had the strongest motive to end Farrah’s life and why. Of course, Courtney follows all leads, yes, even the wrong ones. But you know the saying – leave no stone unturned. LOL! I will admit that I didn’t like it when she was barking up the wrong tree, but she gets back on the right track. True to form, there is always the cop saying “let the professionals handle this.”
There is a lot to enjoy in this book from engaging characters, to tasty foods (some recipes included) that will have you envious of the characters who get to enjoy them. I enjoyed this book, and I intend to read the previous books in this series when I’m able. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series and more of Fiona and Courtney’s sleuthing adventures and the growing romance between Courtney and Brady.
I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. The pacing was moderate, and I would have liked a bit more drama to spice it up and really make it a page-turner, but I enjoyed this book nonetheless. Highly recommended for those who enjoy this series and just love a good fantasy/paranormal cozy mystery.

This is the third book in this entertaining series! I really like the idea of magical fairy gardens! I wish I had more of an imagination so I could create my own. But it is fun to read about Courtney's business and how she builds the gardens and helps others build the gardens. It has to help that she can actually see and talk to some of the fairies.

I appreciate the list of characters at the beginning of the book. It helped to refresh my memory of who the regular residents of Carmel-By-The-Sea are and who the newcomers are. Thanks for listing them.

As for the mystery itself, I wasn't sure who did it. There were so many possibilities! The victim wasn't very nice and some of the suspects had some dislikable moments also.

All in all, it was a fun book and now I want to see a fairy door...

I pick up this series because I love the idea of fairies and fairy gardens. The fairies play a much larger role in this one than in previous ones and it seems like everyone knows about them (I thought not everyone knew about them in the last one but I could be wrong). The mystery was interesting but dragged in the middle to the point where I forgot they were actually trying to solve something. Still I enjoyed the premise and will probably continue with the series.

I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.

The third in the Fairy Garden mystery series, A Hint of Mischief was another great read. I’ve been enjoying the development of not only the human characters, but our resident fairies as well! (And I definitely hope to hear more about the Fairy Queen now!) Enough suspicion was placed on multiple people that it kept me guessing, so I enjoyed this case. 4.5 stars.

In A Hint of Mischief by Daryl Wood Gerber, Courtney Kelly, owner of a fairy garden and tea shop, once again is drawn into a murder mystery when a famous actress visiting Carmel, California, is poisoned. Courtney is warned by the local police to leave the investigation to them. However, this does not deter Courtney from following her own line of questioning as she does not believe the number one suspect is guilty of the heinous crime. Who poisoned the actress is not the only mystery that has gained Courtney’s attention. A thief is targeting local businesses, and valuable items are disappearing from a residence. Fairy doors are mysteriously appearing all over Carmel. Courtney is aided in her amateur sleuthing by her sidekick, a fairy named Fiona. Readers will enjoy the antics of Fiona and Courtney’s Ragdoll cat.

A Hint of Mischief is the third book in A Fairy Garden Mystery series. It is a wonderfully written sequel to the first two books in the series. Courtney is a strong protagonist with believable qualities that lend credence to the motivation behind her actions and behaviors. All the characters, whether humans, fairies, or pets, have distinctive personalities. They add fun moments and pull readers deeper into a story with puzzling crimes, mythical creatures with magical powers, fairy garden activities, and budding romances. The descriptive language used by the author vividly brings scenes in the town of Carmel to life. The suspense steadily builds up to an exciting climax.

At the beginning of the book is a list of humans, animals, and mythical beings, along with their roles in the story. The list is helpful for keeping track of the large cast of characters who all play an essential part in this captivating mystery. Each chapter starts with an ingenious quote relating to the fairy realm. After the epilogue, the author has included some recipes with a creative twist. Characters from the story introduce their recipes with a brief blurb about why they specially selected those recipes to share with readers. Some recipes include the gluten-free version. Gerber has included an excerpt from the upcoming fourth book in this marvelously entertaining Fairy Garden Mystery series.

A HINT OF MISCHIEF by Daryl Wood Gerber
The Third Fairy Garden Mystery

Life is never dull for shop owner and fairy garden designer Courtney Kelly. A thief is plaguing Carmel-by-the-Sea with brazen daylight heists, someone is placing fairy doors around town, and Courtney has been tasked with planning an adult fairy party. With not much notice, socialite Misty Dawn wants Courtney to go all out for the birthday party she's throwing for her friend. Sorority sisters, including the famous actress Farrah Lawson, will be in attendance and money is no object. There's tension among these old friends however, and Farrah's nasty side soon makes itself known. When Farrah's found poisoned, Courtney can't help but get involved. With her fairy friend Fiona to help her, the two will look for clues in order to save a friend and help the police.

The Fairy Garden Mystery series makes me want to play in the dirt! I want to grab tiny plants, cute figurines, and create my own fairy garden.

A HINT OF MISCHIEF compelled me to keep turning the pages making this a fast read. It grabbed my attention, kept me curious, and didn't let go. The combination of mysteries kept me intrigued as did conflicting information from various characters regarding the murder mystery. Several suspicious characters were also behaving badly adding to the puzzle of who was guilty.

I love the relationship between Courtney and Fiona. Fiona is growing too. While still full of fun and play, she's also maturing, taking things seriously when needed. I also love how Courtney and Brady's relationship is developing. The two are supportive and caring with genuine interest in each other.

A HINT OF MISCHIEF is a fairy good mystery. It will put a smile on your face, a spring in your step, and have you looking in the greenery for fairies.
