Ethan & Jag Destroy the World

Rate this book
Jagmarith, Demon champion of the Blood Wars, detests festivities.

He’s certainly not a fan of humans or their ridiculous holidays.

Winter festivals. Celebrations of flowers. Misshapen hearts to symbolize love. All pointless and weak.

Unfortunately, his feelings are not taken into consideration when he’s summoned by ancient magic to the human realm.

Stolen from his home in Hell, Jagmarith is now at the mercy of a bumbling, adorable human named Ethan, who has accidentally bound Jagmarith to him. Now, Jag must endure grueling human holidays like Christmas and pretend to be a nice human boyfriend to the man who summoned him.

The fake boyfriend role has been very trying.

But along with the upcoming Halloween party and fuss over finding the perfect ghoulish decorations, not to mention the very odd feelings he’s developing for Ethan, there’s that little matter of the impending Armageddon to deal with.

Jag is not pleased.

Maz Maddox

Maz Maddox is the odd lovechild between a unicorn, dinosaur and vampire. The outcome is a human-like figure who inherited aspects of all three. She is a champion of logic and science, adores beauty and whimsy, and has a slight streak of darkness that dances the line of genius and insanity.

Residing in the wild land of cowboy boots and Shiner beer, Maz spends her time with her two dogs and a husband who she adores, and is constantly demanding that science gives her a pocket sized triceratops. The efforts of these demands have yet to be fulfilled.

When she’s not pining over the lack of chihuahua sized ornithischia, she’s a writer who loves crafting adventures tales sprinkled with humor, a hefty helping of romance, and topped with a happy ending.

I can never get enough of Maz Maddox's playful, flirty, and unique stories, because they always tend to make me smile. 🙂

This time around, we have a heartbroken, young linguist, Ethan, accidentally summoning a deadly warrior demon, Jag, to his basement, in a misguided effort to make his douchey ex-boyfriend jealous.

I loved the urgency at the start of the story to immediately correct the situation and return Jag back to his home in the demon realm. But when sex and feelings got thrown into the mix over several months, that determination, on both their parts, suddenly turned into "Meh, if he gets back, he gets back", with a strong preference to Jag never having to leave Ethan's side ever again.

But when the world started tearing itself apart, with the summoning spell being the only possible cause, the guys had to refocus on repairing the rifts by completing the summoning pact.

The most entertaining part of this story for me was Jag's demon warrior take on all of the everyday aspects of normal human life. Like how flakes of frozen water falling from the sky was both deadly and terrifying.

Jag's attempts at courting Ethan with small gifts, often with the skulls of dead animals and man-eating flowers, were pretty funny, too. Plus, his desire to please and protect Ethan was really adorable.

The sexy bits were kinda-sorta bordering on too steamy for my tastes, and I could've completely done without the tentacle tongues and tails.

I'd still highly recommend this light-hearted, holiday-feeling story to fans of Maddox's books and rate it at around 4.25 stars.

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

OMG THIS WAS SO CUTE!

I hadn't read the novella of Jag and Ethan before so I read the two parts of this book. And can qe just ralk aboit how cute "Jagmarith, second son of Bolor’gath, Champion of the Blood Wars, and carrier of his clan’s armor" is.

I loved Jag the demon who was ACCIDENTALLY summoned by Ethan the fumbling human. They were both so adorable together. Jag understanding the human world was so funny.

The Plot: Ethan wants to make his ex jealous and wnded up with a demon boyfriend. But said demon boyfriend shouldn't stay on Earth and so a tear starts between Hell and Earth. Also it rains hellish animals. FUN!

The Romance: ADORABLE. These giys were so cute together. Jag wants to give Ethan skulls and posionous carnivorous plants to show his affection. Can we say... #Romantic?

Angst-o-meter: low angst! Because this book was SO CUTE.

Steam-o-meter: Medium steam. Also Jag has horns and 2 tongues. #NuffSaid

HEA: YES! And it was so CUTE!

Did I mention that this book was cute? Yes? Ok!

“God, why are you so tall? I can’t kiss you dramatically from down here!”

Audio review

This was short and entertaining, and really funny at times. I must admit I was a bit confused early on because there was a strange time jump early-ish in the book. I found out it was because of the first bit being a short story that was later expanded on. I didn’t find out until I downloaded the ebook to get the quotes for my review, so I was a bit puzzled by this until the end, lol. That doesn’t mean it was bad or anything, just had me scratching my head a bit. It resulted in the romance part feeling glossed over, as they were suddenly an established couple after the time jump. Oh well.

If you two cause the end of the world because you’re horny idiots, I’ll kill you.” Ethan was fairly sure they were doomed.

The good parts of this was really good, though. Maz Maddox knows how to write funny stuff, that’s for sure, and both the books I’ve read by them so far have been refreshingly original. Ethan and Jag were both awesome, but I think my favorite character was Jag’s familiar, Sammy. Too funny. I really liked the mystery-solving part, and had a lot of fun when listening to their amateur attempts at heists, lol.

Jag has an accent (british?), and Ethan is American. This wasn’t a problem during dialogue. The chapters from Jag’s POV had a british accent during the dialogue as well as the regular narration. Unfortunately, Ethan’s chapters *also* had the british accent during the regular narration. His american accent was only present during dialogue. This made it difficult to keep track of whos POV it was sometimes. The narration was good except for that tho!

“So.” Ethan stirred his stew absently. “What’s Hell like? Do you really have boiling lakes of fire and all that?” “Oh, yes. The fire lakes are truly beautiful. I spent my childhood there during the summer months, fishing for ember fish.”

“Did you plan another vacation to the beach so I can take my revenge against the seagulls?” “Nope.” Ethan hooked his arm around Jag’s. “How about I show you?” “I still wish to get my revenge, Ethan.” Jag followed as Ethan pulled him out of the kitchen. “They stole from me and insulted me with their cries and by shitting in my ice cream.”

“What’s your poison, new guy? We have all manner of adult beverages, but we also have really yummy virgin stuff if you’re driving.” Jag stared since nothing the witch said made any sense. How could a drink be of a certain age or lack sexual experience? Did he even want a drink that could potentially have sex? Satan below, what the hell would that even taste like?

I just like silly goose writing, silly goose jokes, weird humour, and there’s a demon with two tongues.

What else can I say? 🤷🏻‍♀️

There’s definitely a lack of use of his two tongues in this book but that is literally because the plot is getting in the way of the sexy times.

I rate this book 4 silly goose’s.

I feel like fans of Maz Maddox’s RELIC series, may enjoy this, it’s the same realm of silly sausage.
It’s a nice short palette cleanse read also, and you need to read part 1 first💖

Original review September 22, 2022:

Ethan & Jag Destroy the World was hilarious, endearing and entertaining, Maz Maddox comedy gold. Y’all know I’m not a fan of insta-love, there was a minor plot hole or two and a couple little cringing niggles but those things didn’t bother me at all because I was so entertained in every other way.

I loved this one and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed out loud reading a book as often as I did reading this one. Even better, Maz managed to freaking gut me for a second there too. Gotta love when an author can make you laugh and laugh and laugh and then clobber you with tears as well.

Another KU that’s added to my Christmas wishlist. Need this adorable gem in my library permanently.

ETA December 31, 2023:
I just finished the audiobook and have to say that I stand by my original review 100%. Kirt Graves nails the narration, as usual. He is hands down my favorite narrator at this point, managing to breathe life, sparkle and charisma into characters in the most brilliant and remarkable ways.

Note: the audiobook is available through Maz and Kirt’s online shop here.

Edited to add December 26, 2024:
Ethan and Jag Destroy the World (ebook) is FREE today. If you haven’t read it yet or have only read it with KU, now’s the time to add this hilarious gem to your permanent library!

This was so freakin cute I can’t handle it.

Give me archaic language and a bumbling creature learning human ways any day. This author can do it so well too! Never have demons and violence been cuter. I even loved the reference to another favorite MM author of mine. Authors supporting authors is something I didn’t know I wanted. All sorts of good feels here.

One of the funniest books I’ve ever read:)

I read the first part nearly a year ago, and loved it! I was hoping there would be more with Jag&Ethan. This book didn’t disappoint. There is a shift in the book, the first part was more funny, like laughing out loud funny, the 2nd part was more romantic and focused more on the relationship. If you in the mood to read a light Ron-com with the best demon ever, this is it!!☺️

I already loved Maddox's dinosaur shifter series so I decided to give ETHAN & JAG DESTROY THE WORLD a try and I absolutely loved it!! When Ethan accidentally summons Jagmarith, Demon champion of the Blood Wars, they quickly realize the only way to return Jag to Hell is to fulfill the summoning Oath -- make Ethan's ex jealous by fake dating at a holiday party. What could go wrong?

I just adored this book so much that I read it in one night. Ethan was a nervous, bumbling, but so sweet human who doesn't quite know what to do with the giant, red, horned demon he's summoned. But what really makes this romance shine is Jag who was grumpy and easily riled by the human world, but also the sweetest demon as he tried to learn all about human holidays in order to help Ethan. Watching Jag be stumped by human traditions and trying to court Ethan with animal skulls and poisonous flowers -- you know, just demon things -- was the softest thing.

Not only was this so much fun to read but it also felt really unique; humans and demons are pretty standard in the paranormal romance genre but Jag and Ethan's story felt so fresh and different. It had me laughing out loud one moment and then swooning the next. Ethan and Jag were so great together, whether they were baking cookies, stealing rare books, or getting frisky with a pair of fake horns from the Halloween store. And don't even get me started on Jag's two extendable tongues! Yeah, you read that right. This was definitely a very hot read.

With lots of holiday mishaps, fake dating to real dating, an adorable demon familiar, and an impending invasion from Hell, ETHAN & JAG DESTROY THE WORLD hit all the right spots for me!

I LOVE Ethan and Jag!

The first 40% of this story is the new year's eve release that Maz wrote earlier, where we first met Ethan and Jag. Ethan accidentally summons a demon - Jag - from an ancient spell book, not realizing exactly what he got himself into. Now they have to work together to ensure Ethan's goal is accomplished - make his ex jealous. Hello fake boyfriends!

I loved all the little nuances to Jag experiencing the human world for the first time - how odd our traditions like Halloween and Christmas are - the cookies, the decorating, the fake "scary" props, fake blood, I love it all.

I really love Maz's writing - there is humor laced through it, really well written characters, and some fun times and steam. I really loved this and loved that we got more of Ethan and Jag. I loved the new story so much, definitely recommend this!

Jag is a powerful demon of Hell from a strong clan, and a mighty warrior. Imagine his shock when he finds himself summoned to the Earthly plane by a puny human worm who was actually trying to curse his ex. Ethan thought magic was a lot of nonsense so he didn’t really expect the old book he was attempting to translate to actually summon a demon. Oops! This book was so delightful! Jag’s personal insights into Earth were so funny and strangely spot on. I love how these two characters actually manage to fall in love and wind up having to try and save the world from ending due to a magical mix-up. Maz Maddox has a sick and twisted imagination and I love it so much!

Never have I ever

I am such a fan of Max Maddox. I never quite know what’s going to happen but I know it’s going to have a dollop of outrageousness, a splash of zany and result in a whole lotta fun. I loved Ethan and Jag in “Demon All the Way.” Who wouldn’t want more cookie-decorating demons and leopard-ish humans in their lives? Especially when the demon and human are as adorably chaotic as Jag and Ethan and have freaking fantastic chemistry so hot it set my world aflame. “Ethan tasted like sex and desire; he was a forbidden fruit Jag had never dreamed of consuming.” Nngh, love these two and this book so much. They had me chuckling and swooning from beginning to end and I still want more. I vow that you need these two in your life and that sum(mons) up my review.

I am never not entertained by Maz Maddox's stories and this was no exception. Funny, sweet, with some romance and some action. I adored Jag and Ethan and the secondary characters were very good.

This is more like two shorts - a Christmas and then a Halloween novella - that tie together. The only thing I was a bit disappointed in was the nine-month gap between the two stories. I would have loved to see Ethan and Jag settling into their situation during that time.

A hilarious and cute read. I loved the dry humor, and seeing Jag try to adjust to all of the human world stuff, especially with the focus on holidays. Ethan and Jag were adorable together.

I also enjoyed that the end scene

Overall, a fun two part read.

More please

Loved this a lot. The first section was a freebie and is unchanged but part 2 is entirely new and so fun.
Jag has been in the human world for 9 months and has learnt a lot. He and Ethan are super sweet together and their adventure is fun. Very nearly cried which is a real achievement.
I'd love more of them quite honestly

This was such a fun read. Bookended, to my surprise, by the Christmas Holiday.

It was a zany often satirical fantasy romance between a ruthless demon warrior and the man who summoned him (accidentally) to Earth. Incredibly charming.

This book was a delight!

Quirky, amusing and sweet all-around. Apart from all the references to blood, guts and gore that is, but that’s what you get when one of the MCs is a demon.

The book is a two-parter, where the first part – Demon All the Way – was previously published, and the second part – Ethan and Jag Destroy the World – is an expansion and continuation of the first story. To me, both parts were brand new, though, and story-wise they melded together perfectly. If Maddox hadn’t explained the division in the preface I wouldn’t have noticed.

As all of Maddox’s earlier stories, this is complete silliness in the very best way.
A nerdy linguist who summons a demon to make his ex jealous? Well of course.
A blood-thirsty but bored demon who’s tasked to play the boyfriend of said linguist? Yes naturally.
Hilarious situations entailing courtship skull collection and flesh-eating flowers that are caused by culture differences? You bet.
Complete and utter havoc caused by a human and a demon falling in love? Absolutely.

Ethan & Jag is written as dual POV which is awesome. Ethan is the very definition of a cinnamon roll, he’s so endearing, but also quite naughty. And it’s hilarious to follow Jag’s inner monologue and his reactions and interpretations of everything human.

It’s rom-com at its best.

I flew through the story. Mostly. It’s cute, whimsical, and a very easy read.

However, there were a few things that pulled me out of the story. The first one was pretty immediate, when Jag’s familiar equated the human realm to the US. It’s no biggie, but annoying and easily avoidable. Then there were some contradictions to the back-story of the demon world and their interest in the human realm. Most notably there seemed to be a mix-up between the cause of the mayhem; first it’s the so-called re-taking, then it’s supposedly caused by Jag and Ethan’s shenanigans. And when the upheaval caused by the faulty summoning is solved, it also solves the – initially entirely separate – issue of a potential re-taking. It doesn’t make sense which is a shame. The information and back-story covering the demon realm isn’t that extensive after all.

But in the end it doesn’t matter if the there are some plot-holes. The plot is secondary in this read.
It’s all about Ethan and Jag’s interactions and their fumbling and endearing attempts at understanding each other and their infatuation. adorable.

4 stars!

This was cute, it was funny, and just a solid read. Jag’s character did outshine Ethan, but I don’t know if it’s far to compare Ethan Montgomery to Jagmarith, second son of Bolor’gath, Champion of the Blood Wars, and carrier of his clan’s armor.

AHHH, I didn't expect this one to be so freakin CUTE. You can check out the art I made on my Instagram❤️I really adore this story.

I've never read Jag & Ethan story before & I'm glad the author gave Jag & Ethan a complete story with HEA.

Jagmarith, second son of Bolor’gath, Champion of the Blood Wars, and carrier of his clan’s armor was summoned by MISTAKE by the clueless & adorable human named Ethan😆. Ethan used a mighty oath by accident & needed to be fulfilled first so Jag could return home.

Unfortunately, all Ethan wanted was to make his ex jealous, so now he got a fake boyfriend demon to play the part.

Fake dating starts & the 2 fall in love with each other celebrating all holidays throughout the year, but the THING is the oath has to be completed & Jag can't stay on earth, so that's when hell breaks loose😆.

Jag the demon is clueless about the human world & he shows his affection by gifting Ethan skulls & monsters😆See the 9 skulls & the Dino skull drawing I made😉love the Dino reference at the end.
