Monster Hunter/Lover #1

Accidentally Orc-Ward

Rate this book
Hi, my name's Mabel and I'm the universe's worst monster hunter.

I mean, it doesn't help that I keep falling in love with them...

They said a meek human woman could never kill monsters-- and they were right. The only problem was my father accidentally killed a nobleman and the king needed a new monster slayer.

I am a debt that has to be paid.

Now, my family is long dead, I am no longer meek, and I am still charged with killing every non-human entity that the latest king bears a grudge against.

If I could just stop loving them...

-----------

I'm Brugo and, really, I shouldn't have eaten that human.

It's been a hard winter, though.

I thought that by keeping myself far away from humans I would be fine. But then the drought happened, followed closely by a bitter winter that lasted for far too long.

That human had been a mistake but it had been the only thing that kept me alive.

Now I smell another human and I yearn for this one too...

Accidentally Orc-Ward is the first book in the Monster Hunter/Lover series. If you desire a happily ever after with unbelievably hot monsters and a human who doesn't have to choose as well as plenty of steamy scenes then grab your copy today.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I started this book, but I can certainly say that this story keeps you hooked from beginning to end and leaves you wanting to know what happens next. Something tells me this is only the beginning and as a reader, we are in for one wild ride with this series!

Mabel has been tasked by the King with taking out an Orc who has done the unthinkable. Skilled at what she does, she knows when she sets out on her adventure that this is going to be just another (somewhat) easy day at the office. What she doesn't expect it her feelings to get in the way and put her life on a completely different path.

Brugo has done something that is terrible to the human race. Having banished himself from his clan, he is all on his own in this tiny, wooded mountain area with little in the way of resources. When Mabel stumbles in the woods on her hunt for him, he thinks he has another easy job (and potential meal) in his grasp. What he doesn't factor in is his deep attraction to her and this constant pull he feels that makes him think of her as home. Can both Brugo and Mabel put aside their roles in this universe and open themselves up to the potential of love from one another?

This story is fast-paced, action packed and full of spice! The chemistry between Mabel and Brugo is off the charts from the moment they meet each other and it is hard for them to deny themselves of the attraction. Their moments together are certainly hot and leave you wanting more. You also get a lot of backstory from Brugo- the circumstances around what brought Mabel on her mission and why he was exiled from his clan. The one thing I do wish is that we got a bit more of Mabel's backstory. You do get a glimpse into it but there isn't much expanded on it in terms of maybe some more about her parents and the family that she has seen come and go. I feel like the possibilities are endless with Brugo's family because they are still around so that is why I feel like we could have gotten more from Mabel's past- which still could be coming as this story ends on a massive cliffhanger that I hope is taken care of in the next book!

Mabel is forced to be a monster hunter for King Gilberd. Like forced, forced. Her body has been transformed to be stronger than an average human and she is compelled to go to him when he calls. Mabel is sent to find a Orc that killed a war lord. Mabel only has one friend, Reeve, all of her family is gone. She needs the purse for killing the orc. She is running out of money and time. King Gilberd only has one use for her. So she has to make sure she stays useful.

Brugo is just trying to survive. He knew killing and eating the war lord was wrong and has exiled himself to a land that cannot sustain an orc. Killing the war lord was necessary. Brugo was hungry and needed to survive. As soon as he smells Mabel, Brugo knows there is something different about her. Mabel tries to do her job but the attraction is something that she cannot ignore. Brugo is huge but there is something gentle about him. Brugo and Mabel get to know each other and find out the real reason for Brugo killing the war lord.

Betrayal, family and love are at the core of this book. Seeing this couple come through the turmoil that is life will have readers holding their breaths. This book includes fights and a lot of sexy times. Get ready to be entertained. I can't wait to see what's next for Mabel and Brugo.

now obsessed with orcs

First in the series, This is a spicy paranormal story with a romantic twist.

Mabel is a monster hunter. After her father killed a nobleman, she was turned into a monster who was tasked to kill other monsters to pay that debt. Now she is hated by everyone in the town.

Bruno is an Orc and has been banished from the kingdom, and has a reward on his head. When he caught Mabel, instead of killing her he intends to use her as a hostage to try to exchange her for his freedom.

Written in dual POV, it’s almost like two stories being told at once.

I almost skipped this one because I had never read an orc book before and I didn’t think that would me my jam. However, I am absolutely addicted. I read this front to back in one setting. I absolutely can’t wait for the second one!!!

On to book two: Plunder Down Under!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A steamy monster romance read

Mabel, a magically altered human, is sent to remove Brugo, an Orc, from the living for killing the King’s favorite warlord. As the story progresses her journey begins, their emotions spin, and the truth could cause everything to end. Accidentally Orc-Ward is a steamy monster romance read.

I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

A monster love story

Mabel has been sent to be Drugo's undoing, but when she finds him he outsmarts her. He's wanting to keep her as a hostage, but finds that he's attracted to her. Together they have to figure out their situation and how they're going to handle everything, including her connection to the king.

This book has action and some 🔥🔥🔥🔥. I will definitely be reading the next book.

2.5 stars. The book is almost too vanilla for a monster romance. Sure, the MMC is green-skinned and has tusks and a real big eggplant, but so does Ruby Dixon and she basic AF. But honestly, the sleepy spice is just the cherry on top of the shit sundae that is this ramshackle plot. The weirdest spicy scene was the one where they did it right next to a pile of corpses of the people they’d just killed together? Super gross and not hot.

The FMC is supposed to be this super-hard-to-kill, super-long-lived, badass monster hunter, but she gets captured by the MMC easily in act one and then again by the villains in act three after they followed her back to the MMC’s hideout without her noticing. Also she seems super naive, having lived long enough for like 4 or 5 human lifetimes, to be so easily deceived by the villain (who was apparently playing a very, very long con), and to have no other friends or contacts in the palace after all that time… it reeks of lazy writing. As does the fact that she has never had any other lovers as good as the MMC and has not been in love for centuries until randomly meeting this dude in a cave.

The MMC is supposed to be this tragic tale of a man who has committed a murder to avenge a crime against his sister, blames himself for her ever being hurt in the first place, and was exiled from his home and disowned by his family for it. The resolution is super anticlimactic.

I'm in two minds about this book. On one hand, I love a good steamy monster romance. On the other hand, this was rather clunky.

Mabel is a monster hunter who works for King Gilberd. Changed as punishment for her father's actions, she's forced to do the king's bidding, and he commands her to kill the orc who killed one of his warlords. She tracks down the orc, but can't find it in herself to kill him...instead, she wants to do him! But the king won't take this failure lying down....

This gets steamy fairly quickly, which is fine for an instalove, but there's not really a whole lot of reason for these two to be together. It's a bit longer than your typical instalove, so I wanted to see a little more development and chemistry outside of the bedroom between the two main characters. It seems like Brugo gave Mabel a heated look, and suddenly, she's questioning everything she's ever desired. And for being a successful monster hunter, Mabel never really came across as such or dangerous or ruthless.

The writing itself could've used another pass through editing. There were some words used here and there that didn't really belong; the author was going for one thing but ended up with something entirely different because of a misused word. There were several typos, too (public hair, as an example) that kinda took me out of the story a bit.

This wasn't a bad story by any means, and I'll read more of the author's work, but it didn't quite get where I wanted it to for me to be fully satisfied.

Ok, soooooo… I was so excited to get this ARC as I had really, really enjoyed another book by this author. However, this one just didn’t meet the same mark. It felt rushed, cliched and too one dimensional to be enjoyable.

The relationship between Mabel and Brugo was pretty much Insta-Love/fated mates (not my fave but ok) and pretty hot and heavy. I will admit that I like hot and heavy in these length books as they’re pretty self explanatory and don’t require the emotional lead up that a longer novel would. It’s straight to the point of what I want in one, so a big point there (basically why I gave it two stars, not one).

The speech feels stilted and grating at times, and could flow much better.

I liked that the setting was easy to visualise and didn’t need any world building. It’s pretty much a castle, a forest and a cave. I also liked the summing ability that the king had to call her back. That was clever, and I’d have loved to seen it utilised more.

My biggest thing was the unoriginality. It just reads like every other formulaic book in the ‘fated-mates, monster-meets-lover’ category.

If this is your jam though and you want and easy read, then GO FOR IT, definitely give it a go, just don’t expect your world to be rocked. Take it for what it is: a quick, cliched, fated-mates monster romance.

This is book 1 in a series. It ends on a cliffhanger. So far, the story is MF, but from the blurb, and the last few paragraphs of the book, I think the rest of the series will be why choose.

Mabel is a monster killer. She has been forced to undergo a magical transformation that makes her stronger and faster than a normal human. Now, she's forced to obey the evil king as he orders her to kill monsters. This time, he sends her father an orc who ate his enforcer. Brugo is an orc who had been exiled far from his family. He killed and ate a human to avenge his sister, and he does not regret it
One day, a human (or is she?) finds him in his cave. He attacks her and they fight. Will they get together? How will they deal with the king? Read to find out...

I really liked this book! It's a dual POV. I can't wait to read book 2 to see what happens next: I've already pre-ordered it! Brugo is very sweet and yet strong at the same time. I also loved how they started as enemies, but quickly recognized there was more between them. I like how the characters are written and developed. I recommend this book to any monster romance lover!

ARC Review
I read a free excerpt of this book and it was so good I immediately jumped for an ARC. It started a little slow for me but once you get to the place where the characters meet, it picks up and gets pretty spicy right away. There's a lot of steamy scenes packed into this short novella and vast amounts of..uh..'liquid'!! I liked the more old world feel and that the orc actually lives in a cave,as monsters ought to. I also like that she's captured and chained up. 😏 It's a good story with some interesting original ideas and is dual pov.

I found that there was a lot of repetition of both characters inner thoughts of turmoil and the trauma from their pasts. I also couldn't really feel a tangible difference in personality between each point of view, both read very much the same, the orc didn't seem more monsterous or masculine than the heroine in his own thoughts, I also found his thoughts and dialogue to be a bit too modern and everyday considering what he is. I still liked the characters though!

The story gets better as their attraction becomes love and then danger and action become very exciting towards the end.

DNF at 61%

I use 1-star ratings sparingly because I feel bad to trash people's work. This time, though, I can't help it. This is such clunky writing, I was sure it was an author's debut. Imagine my surprise to realize she's written 30+books!

I had planned to push through to the end to see if it redeems itself, but I can't forgive the MMC for "encapsulating her breast" (what?!) or when he "hit the spring of her public hair."

The bad, unrefined writing isn't the only thing wrong here, in my opinion. The characters' motivations don't add up. The entire thing centers on "I should kill you but I want to do you", and that only takes a story so far. There's virtually no plot at all, and the steamy scenes are nowhere near good enough to make this book count as lighthearted smut. We don't get a feel for why the MCs like each other, so it's all pretty hard to believe.

I guess her being grateful that she wasn't killed by his monster equipment is supposed to be sexy:
...he fills me so completely that I am surprised I don't split in two, thankful, as well that this isn't the case.

How was this rough draft published?!

This is a entertaining story that tells the tale of Mabel & brugo 💜🖤

Mabel is a slave to the king's family bloodline, she's been cursed to do there bidding and kill monsters, giving her the title off monster hunter!! We follow her as she's tasked to find and kill an orc, who killed and ate a nobleman.

When Mabel finds the orc she's looking for they have a bit off a fight and she is captured by the orc, it's then she realises theres more to the story, and finds out the reason the orc brugo killed the nobleman.

Brugo is a damaged orc who thinks he is unworthy and dosn't deserve forgiveness, his family has banished him, even thou he done it for his sister.

Brugo & Mable feel an instant connection, and they find out they are fated mates!

Brugo was deliciously alpha🥵 because Mabel was magically altered, she was his perfect match.🖤💜

This is a tale of love, betrayal, passion and lots of hot steamy scene🥵 if you love enemies to lovers monster romance then this book is for you, the book isn't finished yet and I hope we will be seeing more off them, because it seems like Mabel might have more than one fated mate😱😱.

Definitely a different type of read for me.

I’m not new to monster fucking but this was my first Orc and I’m definitely intrigued. This was also my first book by this author and I’m invested in the storyline.

The pacing was hard to get a read on as the passage of time wasn’t clear at all in the book but I enjoyed it. Definitely a case of instalove and the author set up the storyline in a way that says this is just the beginning.

I wasn’t expecting the ending, it felt kind of abrupt and I feel like I went from 68% to 97% wayyyyy too fast.

I’m invested in the plot and characters especially after the way this ended and can’t wait to read the next book!

This was a tough one for me to rate because it wasn’t a 5 star read but it wasn’t a 3 star read either. It was really good but there was just something there that didn’t win me over to 5 stars. I think it’s because I struggled a bit in the beginning to get into the storyline but once I did I couldn’t stop reading. All in all, a great read that introduced me to a new monster and a new author. It’s a win win!

4 1/2 stars - I read a lot of Orc romances and this story that's about Mabel and Brugo was an enjoyable read. Monster Hunter Mabel is a human who was change into a monster by magic and Brugo the Orc were good characters. The story of a starved orc, Brugo, who ate King Gilberd's Warlord and is living in a cave in a forest of man-eating plants and a human monster woman, Mabel, whose job of being a monster hunter that was force upon her and their encounters as Mabel meets Brugo was an entertaining read. Will Mabel complete her mission, or disobey the miserly evil King's orders? This story is a slow burn since it's an enemy to lover's romance, but I found myself quite engaged in the story. This story has touches of darkness which denotes the harsh conditions and lives of our two leading characters that are just getting by was good background for this Orc romance. I enjoyed this ARC that I received via the author, and I volunteer to read and review.

Mabel. She is... Well, she is a monster hunter. Is she the best? Well, no, but falling in love doesn’t make her the worst! She is sent on a mission to kill an orc that had killed and eaten a human, only this orc is a lot stronger than she anticipated. Brugo. He… well he is the one who ate the human that got her called out to kill him, the tiny human with white hair. She’s beautiful but He cannot have her. They are enemies after all. But they have a bigger enemy that together they can defeat!

Well dang, this book was spicy and well-written, and the plot was amazing! You get enemies to lovers, betrayals, and things you didn’t see coming. This book will keep you at the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next, what they do, who they are with, and where they are going.

I can’t wait to see what else Lucee has in store for us with this series! Thank you for the advanced reader copy!

This was a quick and easy read the main characters had me cheering for them in the end but it ends on a kind of cliffhanger so I’m not a fan of that but it didn’t take away from the storyline. Mabel is a non human monster Hunter after her father killed a noble man and she must pay of the debt and with dark magic holding her and keeping her tired to the Royal family to serve the King but she has a flaw and that has her falling for the aliens and now the King has a new job for her and its to kill the Orc that killed one of his warlords. Brugo is an Orc who has just killed a warlord and ate him after he done some evil and inexcusable things to his sister and now the King has sent a Hunter to kill him and for once in his life he doesn’t care anymore because he is sick of being alone but when he smells the human he new she was is fated mate and now sets about making her his but the curse/ magic stops them from being together. How will it all end do they get there HEA or not

Ok, first things first. This is not a standalone so please do not expect everything to be neatly tied up with a ribbon at the end of this book. It is an enemies to lovers with a sprinkle of fated mates and I really enjoyed it. Mabel really has been given a rather rough deal. She did not ask to be made into a monster hunter, yet she was. The result of which means that she has long since outlived the rest of her family. So not only is she alone but she is expected to kill things and she does not like killing. She has been tasked by the King to get rid of an Orc. One who has in fact eaten one of the king's men. Brugo, for his part, has been living in an unforgiving place. Damp caves, impenetrable forest and toothed plants all add up to a scarcity in food. Could there be more to his eating the king's man than at first thought?

Mabel is sent to kill Brugo but she hates having to kill.
Monster Hunter Mabel was link to the kings line when she was magically made into a monster hunter as repayment for her father killing a man close to the King himself. She has now outlive her whole family and has no one who is close to her. When the king summons her this time her target is an orc who killed one of the King's Warlords then ate him. Brugo has been hiding in a cave system surrounded by a thick forest where the plant have teeth but there are slim picking of wildlife for him to eat. Now he has a monster hunter on his trail.

It was okay. I was excited to get this ARC because I like monster romance and the blurb made it sound very interesting. I was a little disappointed. I like Mabel and kinda feel sorry for her and how she got stuck being a monster hunter. Brugo is the orc she is sent to kill. The interaction between them is enemies to mates.
The characters just seemed lifeless with no emotions. The story itself is a great idea but it seems really rushed. I hope the second book is better because the blurb for it sounds really good.

Things Aren't As they appear to be

Mabel is a renowned monster given a command from n the king to k*ll an Orc who has eaten one of the Kings closest men. Mabel doesn't want to harm monsters but she has no choice due to the dark magic that transformed her and bound her to the royal family.

Mabel's life changed when she met Brugo the Orc. What started out as mortal enemies turned into a forbidden love between monster Hunter and mobster. Now Mabel is labeled a traitor and on the run.

Will she completely her assignment or forge a new life with her Orc Bae?

This is a gem. I enjoyed following Mabel’s with her current monster hunter assignment to take care of an orc that killed a warlord close to the king.

Then she meets Brugo, the orc, and they attracted to each other even though she’s trying to kill him. This new romance between them and her getting to know what happened for Brugo to kill the warlord makes her second guess if she’s actually hunting monsters.

Their relationship is cute and adorable and can’t wait to read the next book. I highly recommend this.

This book is based on Mabel who is a monster hunter that is supposed to be going after an orc who killed the kings righthand man.
Things don't go quite to plan when she runs into him for the first time and both of them end up having feelings for each other.
There were alot of parts of the book that I didn't expect at all and I was pleasantly surprised with what happened throughout it. There were plenty of spicy scenes and also lots of action and fighting.
The book does end on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next book in the series

First time reading anything from Lucee Joie. I definitely was not disappointed. I loved reading this book and with each chapter I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. The storyline is great, and I cannot wait to read more of this Monster Hunter series, as this is book 1. The character build is top-notch for me. I fell in love with Mabel real quick, and Brugo soon after. Action packed with plenty of spice. I can’t wait to read book 2 to see where things go!

As always please pay attention to any trigger warnings, what I like you may not, and I always go in blind. Happy reading!

I LOVE this book. I really enjoy the plot and I’m really curious to see how it unfolds in book two, also to see how the romance is in book two. This book has enemies to lovers and fated mates, Brugo (the orc) is the orc daddy of my dreams and I’m so, so happy this was my first introduction to orc romance lol I have no regrets with this book. I always wish stories didn’t end, but that’s what book two is for right?! I’m ready for the Kraken!

This was a great quick read! I loved Mabel and Brugo, the idea of Mabel having this sorta monster hunter type body was quite unique, and Brugo was like the perfect specimen of an Orc in my mind. Joie did a great job with the storyline, it was gripping, entertaining, spicy, had that romance we needed and she managed to maintain balance and make it flow quite well within this book. I am definitely eager to see what book two brings!
