Simmering with Resentment is the 11th book in Daryl Wood Gerber's A Cookbook Nook Mystery series. While I read the first book nearly five years ago, I caught up on the previous ones throughout the last few months. Finally, I became current in a series, especially since I've read and enjoyed most of the author's other stand-alone and series novels. This collection takes place in California, and it's wonderful to see the growth in so many of the characters in the last decade. From marriages to babies, murders to injuries, they've learned a ton... and in this one, Jenna is about to marry Rhett; except, the woman who set fire to her own restaurant and framed Rhett years ago has been released from prison. She's returned for what seems like vengeance, and when she's blown up, the blame game is intense. I was thrilled with the sheer number of suspects and side characters who could've been guilty. I kept jumping around until settling on someone, but I was wrong. I also didn't like who ended up being guilty, but it made complete sense too. Gerber's series has been a highlight in the last few months, and I really appreciate how easy she's made the books to read, enjoy, and root for. Very family-oriented, they present a strong balance of traditional cozy and modern life in a world of growing technology, being inclusive / diverse, and financial frenzy. Can't wait to see what comes next here.

I always look forward to reading a new book in the Cookbook Nook series and this new one is an action packed and suspenseful addition. Wedding bells are in the air in Crystal Cove, California with Jenna and Rhett's wedding coming up in a few weeks but, there is also a bridal expo going on. When Jenna and Rhett almost died in an explosion at Rhett's restaurant, she is sure that a woman who set fire to Rhett's old restaurant is responsible. Afterall, she is out of prison since she saw Sarita at the expo. But then the sailboat Sarita is staying on blows up a day or so later. Well, now she has to find out who would want them all dead. Jenna cannot resist investigating even though her friend and police chief, Cinnamon, tries to stop her. A lot of people had a motive to dislike Sarita, but Jenna and Rhett? This is another fun mystery to unravel as Jenna goes through the pool of suspects, putting herself in the eyes of a killer. Festivals also mean fun events, like food demonstrations at the Cookbook Nook Bookstore and Cafe. Lots of recipes are included. Recommended for cozy mystery and foodie lovers.
I received a complimentary ARC from Beyond the Page Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

This is the 11th book in the Cookbook Nook mysteries and while reading them all would add to the subtext between characters I haven’t read them all and still thoroughly enjoyed this one. I like the setting Crystal Cove although the bridal expo in the tiny town seemed odd, but I get what it added to the story. My favorite cameo was the 10 fire based named kittens! The main character Jenna is about to get married to her fiancé Rhett, but when things start to go wrong she wonders if it’s a sign that they need to postpone. Of course Jenna stumbles upon a body because that’s what cozy amateur sleuths do but it was quite a bit later than normal since she and her fiancé were attacked instead earlier in the story. The main mystery focuses on Sarita - a woman that tried to frame Rhett for burning down her business to fraud the insurance money and has done her time and returned with a vengeance. The mystery was interesting even if I didn’t find the ending shocking it was fun.

I enjoyed reading Simmering with Resentment. The story takes place in Crystal Cove, CA. Jenna Hart owner of the Cookbook Nook and Nook Cafe is the main character. Jenna is part owner along with her aunt Vera Hart Jenna is engaged and planning her wedding to Rhett Jackson owner of Intime Restaurant. The supporting characters adds to the story. The town is busy with a .Bride's Dream Expo. Jenna finds out that Sarita Strachline has been released early from prison. She was sent there for burning down her restaurant The Grotto and left town with the insurance money and left Rhett to take the fall. Jenna got the police to open the case which lead to her arrest. When running into each other at the expo they have words. While getting ready at home a brick is thrown threw the window, Jenna suspects that Sarita did it. Jenna meets Rhett at the restaurant to make dinner together. While there a bomb goes off in the kitchen and Rhett is hurt. Jenna again suspects Sarita, There is a second explosion and Sarita is killed. Jenna and her friends try to figure out who bombed the restaurant and the boat and killed Sarita. This is where the reader is taken on a journey to the exciting and surprising end.

Thank you NetGalley and Beyond the Page for this ARC.

I enjoyed reading this book. The mystery is well plotted with plenty of surprises. The characters are great and relatable. The only thing that I could change was the amount of times Jenna wanted to postpone the wedding. This was a very minor issue. The thing I like the most was outside the mystery was the kittens that were left at the firehouse.

The mystery can be read as a stand-alone, however, it’s best to read in order for the characters’ backstories. I recommended this book to cozy mystery fans.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been influenced by anyone.

Jenna and her fiance Rhett are looking forward to their upcoming wedding. The problem is that someone who has caused Rhett a lot of trouble just got out of prison and is now causing trouble again. Will she ruin their wedding or even their lives?

So many things are happening in this story. The upcoming nuptials, vandalism, theft, and murder are beautifully interwoven and constantly keep the reader on their toes as they try to figure out who did it. This author paints a vivid picture with her descriptions, as always. Thanks to Beyond the Page and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.

It is always fun to return to Crystal Cove with Jenna and crew and visit the Cookbook store. Jenna is a clever and savvy protagonist. I love the reference to the cookbooks they sell, too. The bridal expo and Jenna's upcoming wedding were suspenseful moments. I loved the food descriptions and the recipes at the end of the book.
The story moved along quickly. It was fun figuring out the mystery. While I figured out whodunit, it was still an entertaining story. Cookbook Nook Mysteries is one of my favorite series and I can't wait to read the next installment.

Thank you to Netgalley and The publisher for the ARC of this book. This was an honest review.

Dollycas's Thoughts

Jenna and Rhett's big day is almost here but Sarita Strachline is back in Crystal Cove looking for revenge. Jenna helped seal her conviction for arson, a crime she tried to blame on Rhett. When Rhett and Jenna try to have a cozy dinner by themselves it is blown up literally landing Rhett in the hospital. They are convinced Sarita is responsible for the explosive act.

Worried about Rhett and trying to keep all the wedding arrangements on track Jenna agrees to leave the investigation to the police. Then her prime suspect meets her demise. Much to the dismay of Police Chief Cinnamon Pritchard Jenna jumps into the investigation and puts a target on her back. Will Jenna live long enough to say "I do" or has her luck finally run out?

_______

I have been excited about Jenna and Rhett's nuptials before they even got engaged and was excited that this was the book where it would finally take place. They are so in love and that radiates whenever they are together. They are surrounded by a great cast of supporting characters. Jenna's Aunt Vera is always my favorite but every character within these pages is well developed and continues to grow as the story continues. They are engaging and diverse and every reader can find someone to identify with.

The author puts forth a complicated mystery. A mystery her protagonist really tries not to get involved in but it is clear her insight is needed. There were more suspects than I anticipated at first and I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and following all of the clues. I had an inkling who the guilty party was but I was wrong and very surprised when all was revealed and a little sad too.

I did enjoy the subplots about the weddings and some kittens left at the firehouse. Kittens are always fun and Wedding Planner Extraordinaire Harmony Bold was great. She kept Jenna calm through all things wedding related including some "mini snafu"s.

Ms. Gerber does a fabulous job of setting a scene making it so easy to visualize each place, everything that is happening, what people are wearing, and the food they are eating.  Oh, the food. Do not read any of Daryl Wood Gerber's books with an empty stomach. The food descriptions will have you craving every bite of food discussed. For this book, I would recommend flipping to the back of the book to find the recipe for Banana Mocha Cupcakes and baking them up before you start reading the story. That way when the cravings start you will have some tasty treats to enjoy while trying to solve this Cookbook Nook Mystery.

Simmering with Resentment really shows the author's cozy mystery writing chops. I escaped right into this story and enjoyed every minute with these wonderful characters. I did have a little disappointment as I wanted a bigger final scene using all the author's descriptive talents but that doesn't keep this story from being a 5-Star(fish) read.

As always I recommend reading the series from the start for maximum enjoyment but this story can be read on its own as well.

This is the 11th book in this popular cozy mystery series by author Daryl Wood Gerber. I have read the entire series and always enjoy returning to Crystal Cove and the Cookbook store with Jenna and crew. This was a very suspenseful addition to the series and a exciting read from beginning to end.

Jenna and Rhett are getting married and celebrating their impending wedding at a romantic dinner for two when a bomb goes off and Rhett is nearly killed. Jenna is devastated and suspicious that a arsonist she put in jail and now released is responsible. The pieces of the mystery are falling into place as Jenna decides she must solve this crime and put the woman back in jail to protect herself and those she loves. When the suspect dies in a bombing Jenna is fearful another suspect is on the loose. Police Chief and friend Cinnamon has her hands full solving this complex mystery.

This was such a exciting cozy mystery I read it cover to cover. Jenna is a savvy smart protagnist and a capable investigator. The Cookbook store is charming and the supporting charcters returning all add to the story. I enjoy this series and highly recommend this cozy series for your reading enjoyment.

We return to Crystal Cove where the yearly Bride’s Dream Expo is taking place. Jenna is doing the final preparations for her wedding to Rhett which will take place in a little over three weeks. Jenna’s happy bubble is burst when she learns Sarita Strachline was released from jail early for good behavior and has returned to Crystal Cove. Jenna worries that Sarita will come after her and Rhett since they are the ones who helped get her convicted for arson. Jenna is at Rhett’s restaurant for an intimate dinner when an explosion occurs in the kitchen. Rhett is thrown six feet from the blast and is unconscious. Jenna is quick to blame Sarita for the crime. Chief Cinnamon Pritchard tells Jenna to focus on Rhett and leave the investigating to her. Jenna cannot help it if information happens to come her way. But then something happens that blow the case wide open. Simmering with Resentment by Daryl Wood Gerber is the eleventh A Cookbook Nook Mystery. For those who are new to the series, each book can be read as a standalone (but you will be missing out on a great series). I find it better to read a series in order because it allows you to get to know the characters and connect with them. I found Simmering with Resentment to be well-written with developed characters. The story moved along at a good pace. I love visiting Crystal Cove with its quaint shops, friendly residents (most of them), and seaside location. Jenna has a wonderful group of friends who are there for her no matter what along with her family. It is time for Jenna and Rhett’s wedding. The wedding planner has everything in hand and there are just a few last-minute decisions to make (DJ or band for example). The author’s vivid descriptions allowed me to visualize the town, the bridal expo, the shops, and characters. I could envision myself in Crystal Cove. There are mouthwatering food descriptions (recipes at the end of the book). Jenna and Rhett’s reception is going to have some tasty dishes. I just love Jenna’s cat, Tigger. He is one cute and clever cat. I enjoyed the addition of the kittens that were dropped off at the fire station. They were a sweet addition to the story. The mystery was a fun one to figure out. There are several suspicious suspects along with good clues and misdirection. One person stood out to me, and I could not wait to get to the end to see if I was right (I love solving whodunits). I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout the story. There are some heartwarming cozy moments that will charm readers. I was a little disappointed with how the story ended. I wanted the complete experience (I would say more but then I would spoil it for you). I am looking forward to my next visit to Crystal Cove. Simmering with Resentment is an explosive cozy mystery with bridal expo excitement, wedding worries, a returning nemesis, an injured groom, a cornucopia of kittens, mouthwatering morsels, and a probing bride.

This was another lovely addition to the cosy mystery series, Cookbook Nook Mystery. Keep in mind this the 11th book in the series, and I would suggest reading the other books beforehand if you want that connection with the characters. That being said, this book does a good job of catching up the reader with what has happened in the previous books, and does mention any important relationships with characters and notable events that have happened. One thing I wished was improved was the writing— I think the book could've been shortened as some scenes added nothing to the story at all; they acted like filler pages. The revelation wasn't too shocking but the intrigue was well kept till the reveal. This series does have anything you could want in a cosy mystery— a murder mystery, small town setting, interesting characters and a cat sidekick!

I thought that it was quite unique that the main character, Jenna, owns a bookshop that specialises in cookbooks; this is the first time I had ever come across that job in a cosy mystery and its quite charming. There is a romance in this book that is quite central-ish to the story because in this book the main character is engaged and they are wedding planning (fun!). That is until the attempted murder happens...

Its a solid cosy murder mystery and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre!

2.5 stars.

Rating scale:
5 stars — Loved everything about this book. Will most likely re-read and would highly recommend to others
4 stars— This book was good. I didn’t love it but I still liked it enough to still rate it highly. I would still recommend this book; it just wasn’t a favourite of mine.
3 stars — I didn’t love it and I didn’t dislike it. There maybe have been a few things that bothered me while reading this book but for the most parts the likes outweigh the dislikes.
2 stars — There might be some things that were lacking in some areas—writing, characterisation, plot etc, but there may have been a few moments that I liked.
1 star — I disliked this book and had lots of issues with it.

This is one of my most favorite cozy mystery series, and I was super excited to read this 11th in the series! It did not disappoint at all! It was filled with mystery, intrigue, and lots of great characters that I’ve come to love over the length of this series. And I won’t give anything away, but I will say I LOVED the ending!!! The recipes included at the end sound great also! Do yourself a favor and put this one your list to read - preferably after you’ve read all the others in the series first just so you can be as in love with the ending as I am!

SIMMERING WITH RESENTMENT is the eleventh book in the Cookbook Nook Mysteries by Daryl Wood Gerber. I’ve been a longtime fan of this series and I was so excited that it appeared protagonist Jenna Hart’s upcoming nuptials to Rhett Baxter were finally going to take place. Adding to the wedding festivities, as she counts down the day to walking down the aisle, is the town’s bridal expo where brides and those dreaming of the big day flock to Crystal Cove to take part. But all doesn’t go according to plan when an explosion at Rhett’s restaurant puts him in the hospital and Jenna narrowly escapes injury herself. Will they ever have the chance to say their vows when it appears someone might be targeting them both? Ms. Gerber’s storytelling prowess pulled me in from the very start and kept me glued to the pages. One of the strengths of this series is the growth of characters over the course of books, and this newest release adds to it.

With Jenna having an invested interest in finding out who might have wanted to kill her and Rhett, she begins poking around and asking questions. Certain she’s found the culprit who had reasons to exact revenge, her theory vanishes as another explosion kills her suspect. The author’s story has twists and turns that kept me guessing, erroneously, about not only who the culprit could be but why. With a suspenseful reveal, the threads came together with a layer of tragic emotion woven in. Thankfully, Ms. Gerber doesn’t end there but continues with a couple heartwarming chapters that leaves the reader looking forward to catching up with Jenna and her pals in the next book!

Daryl Wood Gerber expertly captures the culinary cozy mystery genre in more ways than one. Not only are there mouthwatering descriptions of a large variety of dishes and desserts mentioned throughout the story, but with Jenna as the owner of the Cookbook Nook, a culinary bookshop, there are several delightful mentions of actual cookbooks. And then there are the actual recipes Ms. Gerber includes at the back of the book. It’s almost like getting a mini cookbook and each recipe sounds fabulous!

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Simmering with Resentment Earns 5/5 Bombshells…Deliciously Engaging!

In the eleventh book in the Cookbook Nook Mystery series, Daryl Wood Gerber has turned the time of joy and celebration into an intense game of survival…I love it! Jenna Hart is planning her wedding to Rhett Jackson, but the appearance of Sarita Strachline, who once vowed revenge for Jenna’s part in her incarceration, is problematic. Ok, that’s too tame…it’s deadly! It’s also too coincidental that Sarita’s release from jail coincides with an explosion at Rhett’s restaurant putting him in the hospital fighting for his life. What a motivator to get involved! Jenna doesn’t go off blindly, she does use the local police (I like this realism), but it’s her experience, knowledge, and motivations that leads to a very surprising conclusion. Gerber’s writing is well-plotted, twisty, rich with food and cookbook references, and having a core batch of characters that often act and react reasonably. She adds humor, friendship, and a nice romance to tickle anyone’s fancy. She adds fifteen recipes to enjoy from appetizers to entries, desserts to drinks, regular to gluten free. Always a pleasure to read one of Daryl’s books and test my skill with her recipes…this one is high up on my “favorite” list!

Wedding in the air as Jenna prepares for her own wedding and the bridal expo is in town. All is not so blissful as arsonist she once put in jail is out of prison and looking for revenge.

When there is an explosion at her prenuptial dinner she figures it is their work. Can she find justice before things get deadly?

A fast paced delightful read in the series.

Bride’s Dream Expo is in town, and Jenna Hart, owner of the Cookbook Nook, is preparing for her own wedding in a few weeks. But a dark cloud is hanging over the festive mood when Sarita Strachline, a woman Jenna helped convict of arson, returns to Crystal Cove bent on revenge. And when Jenna and Rhett’s prenuptial dinner is rocked by an explosion that almost takes Rhett’s life, Jenna can’t help but think Sarita is to blame. With Rhett in the hospital, Jenna is determined to find out the truth about the explosion and Sarita.
This was a very exciting cozy mystery full of suspense, plot twists, and red herrings that confuse you about the identity of the culprit. I was very surprised in the end. However, I felt that the main characters’ speculation was a little repetitive and the story was a bit too long and drawn out. Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond The Page Publishing for the Advanced Reader’s Copy of this novel. This review is my unbiased opinion.

What do you, oh, amateur sleuth, do when your best suspect gets herself blown up?

That is essentially the problem Jenna Hart faces in "Simmering With Resentment". The return of a nemesis and the bombing of your soon to be husband's bistro can't be a coincidence, can it? Or can it? When husband-to-be Rhett Jackson is injured in the bombing, Jenna is absolutely, positively certain it was Sarita who did it. After all, both Rhett and she had been instrumental in reopening the case that sent Sarita to prison. But then the boat Sarita had rented is blown up, killing Sarita. Suddenly your theory of of whodunit isn't looking as sound. Talk about complications.

Although this is the eleventh book in this series, I have somehow missed it until now. It didn't really matter. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The author does an excellent job of filling in background events and character as needed. In fact, I felt as if I got to know the various characters well and liked them. Now, true, Jenna is a bit relentless, as she's aptly described in the book, at reporting her theories to the police detective in charge, but I liked her, too. With her wedding drawing near, a town full of wedding obsessed tourists in town for the Bride's Dream Expo, and the bombings, it's no wonder she was a bit tightly wound. That said, with an unknown murderer on the loose, I was amazed to see her taking the dog for a walk alone.

With several plausible suspects and red herrings, I had no clue who did it. In fact, I had the wrong person pegged until nearly the end and had just discarded them when the big reveal happened. In the process, I was salivating with all the food talk. I should note that recipes with excellent instructions are included. I'm not even sure the food talk didn't get more space than the wedding talk although, when I think about it, the two blended together nicely as wedding plans and menus were discussed and embellished.

Bottom line, an intriguing mystery that will keep you guessing with likeable characters and, oh, yes, not just the previously mentioned dog but cats and oh, so adorable kittens. Thank you #NetGalley and #BeyondThePagePublishing for inviting me to Jenna and Rhett's wedding, not to mention all the excitement beforehand.

Wedding Bells are ringing, but someone is out to blow the event out of the water before Jenna and Rhett can get down the aisle! Sinister ex-partner and the people who love to hate her are all on the suspect list, but can Jenna and crew solve the crime before the killer puts a permanent end to the Jenna and Rhett's happily ever after? Great cast of characters that has you feeling like you are visiting old friends rather than reading a story. An intriguing plot that will keep you guessing right up to the end! I absolutely love visiting the Cookbook Nook and can't wait to meet up with these characters again!

In today’s mail was my ARC of Daryl Wood Gerber’s newest book in the Cookbook Nook Mystery series, Simmering with Resentment. I was so excited to receive it I sat down to read a few pages and ended up finishing it a few hours later. Once again, the author succeeded in keeping me hooked throughout the whole story!

The long-awaited wedding for Jenna Hart and Rhett Jackson is just a few week away now, when who should arrive back in town but convicted arsonist Sarita Strachline. Jenna and Rhett played a big hand in helping send her to prison for committing arson on her own restaurant, and stealing artwork. Rhett, who had run into the burning building to save his mother’s treasured recipes, nearly died in the fire. Sarita has been paroled on good behavior, but she’s back in Crystal Cove to settle down and be near her daughters. Not only is she back in town, but she’s had nasty confrontations with several people, including Jenna.

Jenna and Rhett are having a private dinner at Rhett’s restaurant when a homemade bomb explodes, injuring Rhett and putting him in the hospital. Worried sick over her fiance, Jenna is convinced Sarita planted the bomb and begins piecing clues together. In a shocking twist, a murder occurs, and Jenna can’t help but get involved.

I don’t want to give away any more of the plot, but want to say that I think this is my new favorite in the series. Reading this book is like visiting old friends. The cast of characters are so well integrated into the series that I always look forward to seeing what’s going on in their lives.

The plot is full of twists and turns, and it’s a fast-paced read. Honestly, I couldn’t wait to get to the end to have the mystery solved, but then I don’t want the book to end! I love visiting Crystal Cove in these books. It’s a quaint town set on the ocean, lovely views, interesting people…as you can see, I admire how the author writes to make the stories come alive.

On a personal note, I’m not much of an adventurous cook, but I wish the Cookbook Nook really existed so I could visit it and revel in all things cookery!

I won this ARC and am very happy to leave a review for one of my all-time favorite Cozy Mystery series!

I have been waiting for this new book in the CookbookNook series since I finished the last one. Jenna is co-owner of the cookbook store, and is planning her wedding when her fiancé is hurt during a homemade bomb blast at his restaurant. Several other incidents lead Jenna to talk about postponing the wedding but Rhett, her fiancé, isn’t in favor. Although Jenna has her mind made up the bomb was the work of a disagreeable woman recently back in town, she finds clues that don’t fit. This is another great book in the series by this author. While this could be read as a stand-alone book, I would suggest reading the series from the beginning.

A fabulous cozy mystery!

Jenna and Rhett are busy finalising arrangements for their forthcoming wedding, whilst a wedding expo is taking place in their town of Crystal Cove. When home-made bombs explode and a murder occurs, can the happy couple help solve the mystery in time for their marriage to take place as planned?

A fun read, with lots of interesting characters, plenty of red herrings, and a satisfying conclusion.

“ Simmering with Resentment ” by Daryl Wood Gerber the 11th instalment in the Cookbook Nook Mystery series. I really enjoy this series. The Agatha Award–winning author of Wining and Dying returns to the Cookbook Nook, where a killer’s explosive vengeance may lead to Jenna Hart’s happily never after . . .

I loved going back to Crystal Cove California, and visiting Jenna, Tigger and the staff at The Cookbook Nook. I like Jenna as the protagonist she is realistic, relatable and I love Tigger the marmalade cat. The authors descriptions of the Wedding Expo and Crystal Cove had me picturing myself walking down the streets enjoying all the town has to offer and don’t get me started on the food descriptions.

One part of the story I really loved was the fire station kitties all with a fire themed name. I definitely would of adopted one if I had really been there.

As for the mystery it was full of twists, and a few turns which kept me guessing. Overall this was a very enjoyable read, especially if you’re a foodie.

I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from Beyond the Page Publishing and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The newest in the cookbook book mystery series. Jenna’s wedding is almost here and she decides to peruse the wedding expo for any last minute inspiration. Unfortunately it’s not just the expo that’s in town - her fiancé’s previous boss has been released early from jail. Moreover, she blames Jenna for being sent to jail. Soon, a two bombs go off and one person ends up dead. Jenna has to find the killer before she’s next.

This is a great series! If you haven’t read any others in the series, you can jump in here - just know there are spoilers with relationships that developed in previous books. A good mystery though, and like all the others, has recipes at the end.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A bookstore, tons of food references and a mystery, what a trifecta!
I highly recommend this cozy mystery read. It is part of The Cookbook Nook Mysteries but can easily be read as a stand alone. This was my first read of the series and I plan to read the rest.
I loved all the characters! The book starts with the main character, Jenna Hart setting up her display window in her bookstore in Crystal Cove, CA for potential customers from a wedding expo that has come to town along with being weeks away from her own wedding. As your introduced to Jenna’s inner circle and some of the other residents of Crystal Cove, you may notice that several residents have fun or unique names. I loved the story more for this!
Jenna has a wonderful fiancé Rhett who owns a local restaurant Intime. The local gossip informs Jenna of an unexpected arrival in town of Sarita who has reason to resent both Jenna and Rhett. Later at the wedding expo, Jenna and Sarita have an unpleasant interaction. That evening starts a chain of events that will leave you guessing until the end of who done it!
While the mystery is unfolding and more events occurring, it is easy to fall in love with Jenna’s circle of friends and family around the Cookbook Nook. Your drawn into not only the mystery of what happens to Jenna and Rhett and the murder victim but the everyday lives of this delightful community.
Who isn’t nervous before a wedding? Are all the challenges and the murder investigation a sign to not get married when planned? Will something more sinister stop the wedding?
As a delicious bonus, the wonderful food references throughout the book just add to its charm. At the end there are several recipes so you get the pleasure of the story and the recipes as if you shopped at the Cookbook Nook!

Simmering With Resentment by Daryl Wood Gerber find us in June in Crystal Cove and there is a wedding expo happening, as well as Jenna and Rhett's own wedding just thee weeks away. Jenna's first wedding had been beyond simple and so she and Rhett had had decided to go all out on this one. And it was ready to go. Jenna had the perfect wedding planner in Harmony Bold, who was fabulous at keeping all the balls in the air. During the anniversary dinner that Rhett had planned for them, just as she was setting the table, there was an explosion in the kitchen and Rhett was right in the middle of it. She immediately called 911 and paramedics showed up to take him to the clinic. She was left with the police, including Cinnamon, the police chief on one of her best friends. It turned out to be a homemade bomb. Why would someone do that and how did they get it to do it? Jenna rushed to the clinic where Rhett was in surgery.

There were several suspects and she had her favorite until a bomb killed that woman, as well. A brick was thrown through Jenna's window. She needed to postpone the wedding. These were omens. She was hysterical. She was beyond worried about Rhett and now this threat. So many people who had reason to do this second bombing, but why Rhett? Cinnamon warned her to stay out of it every time they spoke. She was but she did hear things, things that a police officer might not hear. It was a good mystery with a very sad ending. The characters, both regulars and new ones, are well written and interesting. Crystal Cove is a fabulous place to live and Jenna had a terrific business and a close circle of friends. These factors make it fun to read and the very definition of a cozy mystery.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Simmering With Resentment by Beyond the Page Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #beyondthepage #darylwoodgerber #simmeringwithresentment

Simmering with Resentment is the perfectly titled eleventh book in the Cookbook Nook Mystery series by Daryl Wood Gerber

Long-held resentments can be dangerous in picturesque Crystal Cove. Jenna and Rhett are soon to be married and are finalizing wedding details when Sarita Stachline returns to town. Jenna helped convict Sarita for arson, and now Sarita is out of jail and back in town. Jenna and Rhett are enjoying a prenuptial dinner when an explosion lands Rhett in the hospital, and it's up to Jenna to figure out if Sarita or someone else is responsible. Unfortunately, things aren't straightforward because Sarita's resentments may not be the only ones uncovered.

I am a sucker for books about books, and Jenna runs a culinary bookshop with a cafe (wish my town had one!) So there are lots of book, cookbook, and food references with great recipes in the back, several of which I intend to try. Favorite characters are back, and it is nice to see them all, but if you aren't familiar with the series, no worries because the author brings you up to speed on everyone as they appear. The premise is intriguing, and there are enough red herrings along the way to keep you guessing. Jenna is a feisty and resourceful sleuth. The California coastal setting is idyllic and the wedding subplot with the bridal expo was fun.

Overall, I enjoyed this book; it hit the right notes for a satisfying cozy and is a nice addition to the series! Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the opportunity to review this ARC.

Simmering with Resentment is the latest book by Dary Wood Gerber in her Cookbook Nook Mystery series, and Jenna is back. She's a step closer to walking down the aisle, but it seems that everything could be thrown off the rails with the return of Sarita. Sarita skipped town years before leaving chaos in her wake. Now she's back and the question arises...why? When Jenna's fiance's restaurant ends up a target of a terrible explosion Jenna's immediate thought is that Sarita is behind it. Especially after the nasty confrontation. But is it Sarita? Or is it someone simply trying to make it look like her while they get away with murder?
Simmering with Resentment is an engaging novel from beginning to end. It's nice to return to Crystal Cove and once again be reunited with familiar characters and see how close-knit the community is. The characters are definitely engaging, but I couldn't help feeling that Jenna was a bit over the top this time around. I get it, her fiance was seriously hurt by what happened, but she seems a bit more aggressive in pushing her way into the investigation due to the connections to the past and the implications they bring as well.
I enjoyed the story nonetheless and all the mentions of delicious foods scattered throughout. I'm really looking forward to trying some of the delicious recipes that the author includes in the back of the book as well. I'm choosing to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I loved the twists and how the author continues to keep me page-turning and eager for the next twist that comes. If you are a fan of this series then I encourage you to grab this book.

I received an advanced readers’ copy in order to review this book. Simmering with Resentment is he 11th book in Daryl Wood Gerbers Cookbook Nook Series.

Jenna Hart owns and operates the Cookbook Nook along with her Aunt Vera Hart in Crystal Cove, California. The beginning of this book, she is planning her wedding to Rhett Jackson who owns and is chief chef at Intime. Not having had a big wedding when she married her 1st husband who is deceased but its also indicated that he was a cheat, she plans a bigger and more lavish affair this time around.

Much to Jenna’s dismay, she learns that Sarita Strachline is back in town. Sarita was the owner of a restaurant in which Rhett was the main chef but the restaurant was destroyed by fire in what eventually turned out to be arson along with insurance fraud and Sarita spent time in prison for her crime. It was Jenna’s friendship with Cinnamon Pritchett, who is chief of police, that resulted in the reopening of the restaurant fire case and the eventual arrest of Sarita. Rhett had been initially blamed for causing the fire.

Sarita and Jenna accidently bump into each other at a local restaurant and have words, ending with Sarita telling Jenna to “Back off”! Jenna goes home to find a brick has been thrown thru her front window with the message to “Back off!”

Rhett plans an intimate dinner for the two of them at his restaurant and a bomb explodes in the kitchen, seriously injuring Rhett. Jenna escapes with only some minor cuts/bruises but now she fears for Rhett’s life and his livelyhood since the restaurant has sustained considerable damage.

A couple days later, Sarita is found dead, a bomb having been detonated on the yacht she’d been living on. Jenna had been wondering how Sarita could afford such a nice boat and the rent for the slip where the boat is tied up, given she had just gotten out of prison and had to repay the insurance company for the money she had gotten from them.

In addition, there is a Bridal Fair going on, keeping the community busy with the additional attendees.

There are many suspects in this story: Sarita’s ex husband, some businessmen in the community who, unknown to Jenna, have ties with Sarita and many bridezillas who are disgruntled by the fact they cannot hire the caterer, photographer, florist, or wedding venue they desire. Expensive merchandise is also being stolen from various Bridal Fair vendors, throwing more problems into an already complicated situation.

I enjoyed this book, the plot has a steady pace without drowning you in a lot of small details. The plot is well formed. Jenna learns that the road to matrimony is not always smooth and does not run according to plan.

I absolutely loved this newest installment in a favorite series! When a beloved restaurant had an explosion, Jenna couldn't help thinking it was the person who'd blown up the other restaurant where Rhett worked and wondered if they'd been targeting her and him since they were having their private dinner at the time. I just knew Rhett was gonna be okay, but I still worried a little, lol.

There were plenty of suspects to consider, and Jenna had a whole bridal expo to do sleuthing in. Along with being a bride herself and wanting to enjoy part of the expo, Jenna had an agenda despite Cinnamon's usual warnings. I thought Cinnamon was especially nicer to her in this book. I know they've become friends, but probably since things were aimed at Jenna and her sweetie, Cinnamon felt a little more protective/sisterly of her.

It was like I knew but I didn't know whodunit and that'll make sense once anyone reads it. The showdown was exciting but not drawn out too long to make readers overly nervous lol. And the ending was just perfect!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own. I usually end up buying the book eventually since I do love this series.
