Humans have been driven underground, like rats, as we try to stay safe from the marauding orcs. All my life, my only job has been to make sure my sick younger sister has enough to eat. But then on a foraging mission, one of those giant beasts get his paws on me.
At first I worry that I’m going to become a plaything of the orcs. But Yrish the Mad Dog of the Burning Sun Clan vows to keep me safe. I believe him. There is a nobleness to this rampaging orc warrior.
He says that he will lay down his life till the end of his days to protect me. That he will love me and try to keep me comfortable as I give him children. Because apparently my scent is strong and tells him I’m his mate.
I guess it’s better than my scent telling him I’m what’s for dinner.
Author’s Note: This is a full length monster romance that features a giant Orc with eyes for his beloved, curvy human. Action and adventure abound as well as steamy scenes between the tiny human and giant Orc. HEA guaranteed.
Celeste King is the author behind the Worlds of Protheka, a collection of interconnected series that promise dark fantasy, intense romance, and washboard abs. When it comes to her stories, there are sure to brooding alphas, sassy humans, and plenty of spice to look forward to.
With the ever growing fantasy worlds, the 'what ifs' are endless, and that is what excites her the most. Even she doesn't know just how far these characters will go, but she's gladly along for the ride.
You can always find her fearlessly diving into an adventure (in this world or another), typically with her husband, and partner in crime, at her side.
She helps keep the excitement alive for the rest us with each of her Prothekan works, where there are no heroes coming to save you and being kidnapped...isn't so bad when your captor is this hot.
I normally like Celeste King but this book confused me. First of all the main male character wasn't a Chieftan so I don't know why the title is 'Rescued By The Orc Chieftan'. Secondly the book has so many contradictions. 1: The Orc thought how much the main female character's gaunt face had filled out from all the food he'd been providing her but she'd only met him like a day or two before. 2: The main female character had a memory of her starting her period when she was younger and didn't know what it was, she rushed to the infirmary and starting ingesting herbs then passed out. When questioned (present time) about the herbs she ingested she had no idea what it was but fast forward to her and Orc's going back to her previous home she knew what herbs she was looking for.
The book jumped around so much that I was continually back tracking to see if I had skipped some pages but I hadn't. So confusing.
This is a monster- orc romance between Yrish and Camille. Yrish is cursed with this war madness and is in danger of attacking his own people. But then he comes across a human woman in the woods whose scent makes his madness go away. He then decides she must be his and takes her back to his village. He tries to convince Camille to stay with him so she can keep the madness at bay.
This was just okay for me. I feel like everything was a little rushed, especially at the end.
I was pretty bored by this … not much seemed to be happening and for all the camp promised by the cover, this book was surprisingly conventional. This was sweat enough to be tooth rotting IMO
Maybe I was tired or distracted but this was not working for. There were reference in the writing which irked me and a confusing time progression which made me lose track of how much time had actually passed in the plot.
In this story, Yrish battles a curse with causes a fugue state when he fights; he finds an unusual cure to his curse in Camille. Between Camille’s bravery and Yrish’s tenderness, I just loved their budding relationship - so sweet. A great story with plenty of action to enjoy.
I wanted something lighthearted to read and was hoping this would be it. This feels like it could have used more polish. I originally wrote only a tad more but as the book continued, I had to let that idea go. I feel bad giving it 2 stars but I can't bring myself to click on that 3.
I felt continually like I was missing context and I don't know if it's because I haven't read any of the other Protheka related series yet or due to the writing not filling in gaps. Given this is the first book of THIS series, I figured it'd be a safe place to start but I was definitely confused and lost at times. Combined with the lack of polish, it was overall a little confusing and lackluster.
Based on the title, Rescued by the Orc Chieftain, one would think that, Yrish, the MMC, is the clan chieftain but he's the Commander and it's not until the 2nd half of the book that it's stated the orc Loki is chieftain? Why is it called Rescued by the Orc Chieftain?
Camille says there is nobody to say goodbye to as if they have zero friends but the book literally began with Camille speaking with her friend Bridget? Bridget is never mentioned again.
Speaking of the beginning, the way Camille immediately sabotaged herself was so abrupt. There should have been some kind of buildup, even a little, to go from the dramatic "I'll do anything for my sister" to overreacting to the point of burning bridges and getting herself fired with a ton of insults thrown at her boss. Was he a douche that deserved it? Sure, but if her situation is that dire, why would she immediately throw it all away the moment something doesn't go her way? It just didn't make sense.
The travel and terrain made no sense. Camille is supposed to only be out for an hour(?) but she gets lost following a monkey (?) holding a banana (??) even though they live near what used to be Atlanta, Georgia (???) for several hours (?). Yrish takes her back to his clan on foot in the span of a few hours (?) but it takes them a day on horseback to ride back (???). Camille acts like she has no idea where they are but suddenly she's claiming she recognizes a specific tree? despite rarely being on the surface?
Despite supposedly being super dedicated to the care of her younger sister Ivory and putting her first before everything, we actually see very little of Camille taking care of her. She's either not home or she's letting her sister wander around an orc camp with orcs they barely know and just met (and despite the fact that multiple orcs made it very clear that they view humans as playthings and don't like having humans around). Way to go, responsible sister.
Every interaction felt stiff. The romance build up was non-existent in that about 60% of the way in, Yrish and Camille suddenly like each other but there really wasn't much in the way of seeing that develop. It just suddenly was. Camille likes that he treats her with bare minimum kindness and Yrish likes that she calms his bloodlust. Great, very healthy reasons that build a strong foundation to any romantic relationship. Also most of that all went down in the span of like three days.
Negative points for mentioning describing a dog with rabies more than once. :(
The storyline was ok, but she was not rescued by the orc chieftain. He was the commander and the chieftain was some other guy. Not as intense as other Orc stories, but still enjoyable.
I feel like I just read a draft of a book not a published one. The plot is a sloppy mess and there are no descriptions or world building at all. The orcs are from another world that merged with modern earth. They warred with humans resulting in a dystopian present where the orcs face the gradual disappearance of their orc magic and territory disputes with other clans, while humans are just trying to survive. Sounds like a good book right? Well thats the extent of the world building in the book. That’s it. There are not even descriptions of what people or places look like! Are they in a building? Tent? Yurt? Are they all speaking English? Does Yurish have hair? No clue. One minute the orc rides a large (literally the only descriptor) “beast”, then it’s a horse, then it’s a “horqin”? In the same chapter the location changes - on a long journey taking a break from the “beast”, in something with a table and breakable window, then 2 days ride from her home but suddenly it’s at the bottom of the mountain the orc base is on? It’s like whole chapters were missing. And on top of all that, the plot ended up being really stupid too.
SPOILERS- Yurish is cursed with a berserker type rage that only Camille’s scent soothes. But in a world that references orc magic, colliding universes, and maybe mates, it turns out the reason Camille’s scent soothes Yurish is because he actually has a mental illness not a curse and Camille ate a bunch of herbs when she was like 12 and decades later is detectable in her blood, so they collect the herb for him and he is cured. WTF did I just read? I did give 2 stars because I didn’t hate the characters and there were no typos (technically) but let’s be honest, I’m being generous. What a waste of a good premise.
The story of human Camille and orc Commander Yirsh. She was living in barracks and helping in the kitchens, he was cursed with the madeness that ran in his family for generations. Her scent was the one thing that kept the madness away. But there is a plot twist! It is not her scent per se, but a resedue of a plant that she consumed to relief her period pains (off the pages, when she was much younger). Camille comes up with the teory that he is not cursed, but are suffering from a mental illness. (She has no medicine experience whatsoever, but hey, it is a fantasy.) They go back to the destroyed barracks to find the plant that might help him feel better in the long run. Ah, I almost forgot - she has a 10 yo sister that is irrelevant.
Story: 📜📜/5 The idea was great - I really like the setting in this world, but the descritpions were sparse and not consistent. Also, the mix of human world and orc world os confusing - what age human were in? The clues are not pointing to a specific time frame, especially to establish the technology and science developement levels. I was ledt confused.
Spice: 🌶🌶/5 I think the book was supposed to be more spicy, but the writing style in this book was not selling it. The spicy scenes were lacking, the descriptions were brief and vauge.
Romance: ❤/5 The chemistry was off. Maybe the writing style is to blame, but the one liners were poorly delivered and were so cliché that it was hard to connect to the story and love.
❗️Trigger warnings:❗️ - descriptions of gore deaths - violence - mental illness - self harm (not suicidal) - sexual scenes

Writing style --* Hero character-** Heroine character--** Bones of the story--** HEA--**
This could have been great book. The writing style is juvenile. The author does little world building and the characters suffer for it. The H is a fierce warrior and his tribe has members that hate humans. So he can bring two into their tribe and there is little dissension? His curse is so horrible for him to live with that he keeps the humans but he loves fighting so much he continues to do it anyway? His inner struggles are practically nil and his character is left deflated and artificial. An orc that loves to fight but his curse causes him to fall into blood lust so strong that his mind blocks his brain from distinguishing between enemy and brothers in arms so he takes in two human females to help with a curse that he seems to ignore as he seeks at least two more battles that put his mate at risk of death.
The h is a brave woman and her love for her sister is noble. Then again, what sister? She disappears after the h mates with the H. No explanation... just gone. The h doesn't mention her nor does she care for her sickly sister who needed constant care. The love scenes are just flat. I found myself skipping them as the cookie cutter attempts were just sad.
The book had a good synopsis but the follow through didn't give me an experience that made me want to continue with the series. As long as it is free on Kindle then you haven't lost anything but your time. Pass it over and read Naomi Lucas.
amille will do anything for her sister Ivory. She currently works in the bunker kitchen but that is fraught with danger, mainly the head chef. The men always have the pcik of the food, there is enough that everyone should be able to eat well and yet many of the women and female children are starving. In a desperate effort to ensure her sister has enough to eat she leaves the bunker and comes across what she thinks is a dead orc. Well it turns out he is very much alive and has a propostion for her - not that kind!! Yrish comes to after his battle rage and somehow he is not rabid. The scent of the small blonde human woman wo is next to him has driven the madness away. He thought that magic was not possible in this world and yet it appears very much as though it might be. He wants to keep her with him always but she has a sister to look after. He can see that she is near starvation so offers her and her sister food, shelter and protection if she will stay with him. They each have much to gain and lose over this bargain. I have to say that Yrish is one of my most favourite Orcs. He could easily have been dark and unpleasant. Angry over his curse and yet he is not. I adore this world and cannot wait for the next one.
Rescued by the Orc Chieftan is a perfectly delightful addition to the series. If you haven't read Celeste King's orc romances, you're missing out!
Yrish is often taken over by madness during battle. His fellows orcs fear him, and with good reason. But one small human woman changes everything. Camille is fearless, and will do anything to give her sister a better life. But she didn't count on actually liking the orc who kidnapped her.
Yrish is strong. Fierce. And yet he's gentle too. When it comes to Camille and his feelings for her, he's just as insecure as most guys. It made him endearing, the way he worried over to show Camille he wanted her as his mate.
Camille has fought long and hard to keep her little sister safe and fed. Watching her learn to trust an orc, a creature she'd thought of as the enemy, was entertaining to say the least. And it also proves that you can't always judge someone by their looks. The brutish orc showed her more tenderness and concern than the humans she'd been living with.
Another 5 star read from Ms. King! I can't wait to see what happens next with these super sexy orcs! I'll be eagerly waiting for the next book....

A very enjoyable book in this series that is about Yrish the Mad Dog of the Burning Sun Clan who is cursed goes into a frenzy to destroy enemies or friends. (This frenzy was introduced in the previous stories.) Battling enemies on the border with his clan, Yrish goes deep into the frenzy. Yrish decides to outcast himself to save them. Meanwhile, Camille and her sister Ivory live in an underground human bunker. Bob the head cook is demanding favors for food which Camille is refusing, and she ends up being cast out of the kitchen. Foraging for food out in the wilds for her sickly sister, Camille spies a monkey with a banana and chases after it gets deeper in the woods. Camille then trips over a body twisting her leg. An unmoving body of an Orc. Then Yrish awakens and notices that his mind is calm by a scent coming from the human. What occurs next was an engaging story with likable characters with chemistry that kept me turning the pages to see if Camille and Yrish get their happy ending. I volunteer to read and review this ARC that I received via Booksprout.
Wow this book was so good and a must read, Camille lives in a underground bunker with her sick sister Ivory and does everything she can to keep her safe and fed. Needing some fresh air Camille goes outside and stumbles across a dead Orc or so she thought and then he captures her saying her scent calms his anger and that she must stay with him but Camille needs to get back to her sister because she has nobody else. Commander Yrish mad dog of the Burning sun clan left his clan to keep them safe because of his blood curse and his rampages. After a brutal fight that his blood lust took over he wake to an amazing scent the makes his body calm and so he decides to keep her because he believes she is the cure to his curse. Yrish goes back to the bunker with Camille to get Ivory but ends up saving all the humans from another Orc Clan. How does it all turn out for everyone involved and do they get there HEA or not. . Aside from technical things, there’s nothing concrete about this that I disliked, I just didn’t like it.
I wish the author had a more concrete idea of the main characters, Yrish especially. I thought I had an idea of where he was going, and then he would do something or say something that had me trying to connect this behavior to what I thought he was. Like, with the shaman, when he is asking for help with Camille, that whole interaction was just incredibly awkward, but his childlike desperation was so bizarre to me.
Organization wise, the plot nor execution were extremely strong, so I was relying on the organization of the book to be really clear and I just wound up expecting more. We jump right into the story, which doesn’t bother me, but from there on it was just cuts between different scenes and there wasn’t a flow to it.
I like paranormal romance and I love a plot that forces two unlikely characters closer, but this didn’t work for me.
All in all, this is a good story - I have issues with some spelling and grammar (definitely needs an editor) and with the timeline. *PLEASE NOTE: while the next few lines will be critiques about the writing, I DID STILL ENJOY the book and may continue reading the series.*
For the story itself, I have no issues with how long they actually progress through the story - it was the execution that left it lacking. One minute it sounds like about a day goes by, then the next paragraph it's actually been several days - no wait - it has only been a day? And there are certain areas where it looks like there was a jump in train-of-thought for the writer and was never addressed for a re-write. There are also a lot of areas that could be expanded on to make the world building really POP! 😊 If you can get past the areas in need of editing, this is a good book
Blurb: This huge orc brings out the animal in me! Humans have been driven underground, like rats, as we try to stay safe from the marauding orcs. All my life, my only job has been to make sure my sick younger sister has enough to eat. But then on a foraging mission, one of those giant beasts get his paws on me. Camille is doing her best to keep her young, sister Ivory safe in an underground bunker where the strongest run over the weaker. When she is fired from the job she hates, she gets out of the bunker for some fresh air and finds a dead Orc. But he is far from dead. Yrish, the Wild Dog of the Burning Son Clan has a severe anger management problem. When he gets angry, he looses control and destroys everyone and everything in his path. But Camille calms his anger and when he asks her to stay with his clan, she has to do what's best for her sister. The book is well paced, sizzling, well developed characters, steamy, and has a few turns. Celeste King has done it again and this series is available to read for free with your Kindle Unlimited subscription. Great start. I received an ARC from Booksprout and this is my honest review.
The story was rushed. Nice idea, but could have used more development.
Although I like the idea to find a medical cure for a curse, the execution was questionable. I mean, you find trace of a plant you ate once years ago? That plant is now an intricate part of her? What super/horror plant is that? And how did the shaman - trained in magic, not medicine - find it?
Also, the romance was super rushed, on both sides. I mean I can understand his point, being possessive and simple needs her, but her? A guy who is somewhat decent and - boom - love! Yes you can easily crush on someone that fast, but it was not that relatable...
Also, no conflict with Orcs that hate humans. Only teased and then skipped... It feels like half the book is missing... I guess it is simply not my kind of book, fair enough.
Fantastic! I loved this book! Great world building. Wonderful characters. I really liked Camille, who was doing all she could to take care of her sick sister and avoiding a lecherous man who would rather they starve if he can't get any "favors" for his "generosity." When she leaves the bunker to find some food for her sister, she is captured by an orc. I was fascinated by Yrish and the blood curse he is under that causes him to fly into a rage- unable to determine friend from foe. He leaves in order to protect those he cares for and comes across Camille, whose presence somehow breaks through his rampage. Hoping for a cure, he abducts her. This story caught my attention from the start. I loved every page. 5 stars.
I asked my best friend "Should I read this? I kind of want to be swept away..." And he said "Yeah. I wanna be swept away. I'd take an Orc lover; I'm not ashamed."
This book was refreshingly predictable with enough surprises to keep me invested. Of course I knew exactly where it was going. There are no secrets when the ending is in the title. What's great is that it wasn't that smutty, but it had some sauce. It was about battle lyrics but there wasn't so much battle that it seemed like a world of Warcraft novel. And it took on a timely topic in an interesting way.
Honestly, it was only 169 pages and less than three hours later, I have no regrets. I'll probably read the rest of them. Solid four stars for me in the absolutely entertaining brain candy of a book category.
This author is new to me and I'm glad I took the time to check her out! Love orc books and this series has great potential. The theme is good but I feel the author can work on their transitions and details. One moment the couple is riding to the mountain and stopped at a stream, next they are in a dwelling ? One moment the main character is in pants and the next gripping get skirts? Also the whole - the clan will not tolerate a human - to total acceptance? Why mention it if there wasn't going to be some pushback from the clan. Could use some polishing, but overall a good read. Thank you!
I hope this is one of the authors earlier works, because it certainly needs a lot of improvement, beginning with a decent proofreader. The improper punctuation, disjointed sentences, and miss-placed quotation marks make the story difficult to read. I like the initial premise, and the plot seems solid, however many pertinent details seem to be missing and others are inconsistent throughout the story. I think with some major we working and a lot of development this could be a really good story. Basically, it tells the tale of two very different people brought together by need which allows them to get to know each other, and subsequently fall in love.
This book/series was recommended to me in a FB group and I’m happy it was. I know it’s only 3.5 stars but it was still a good read overall.
There were a few grammar/spacing/editing errors but not so many that it was completely distracting. The main story was good, although a bit too fast paced (it’s like all I can find are insta-love/quick love books, which makes it harder for me to feel connected to the characters and their relationship).
I did enjoy the two MCs but they were pretty one dimensional and the side characters only made very small appearances.
If you’re into Orc stuff definitely give it a try.
Camille is a cook in bunker #46 well she was until she asked for food for her sister but the chef wanted something from Camille in return so Camille looses it and gets fired so now Camille has to go outside where it’s dangerous to get food for her sister. While outside Camille comes across a dead orc but he’s not because he opens his big yellow eyes his name is Mad Dog Yrish who is the commander of the Burning Sun clan and he captures Camille because her scent cures his madness. There is so much more going on in this fantastic story I loved it and I highly recommend this book.
This was my first introduction to Celeste King and although I really love an Orc Romance I feel like I was missing background information. I found out that there is a series before this that might contain the world building that I need so I may go check that out as well. Over all it wasn't a bad read it just felt a bit disjointed the Orc was a commander not a chieftain I liked the characters and I enjoyed it enough that I'll probably read the next book in the series as well as check out the original series.
A nice premise that read quickly, it started off strong and held my interest all the way through. But...there were plot divots that could have been edited better. The hero orc was not a chieftain, so I read the first few chapters thinking that he was going to kill the actual chief and his second. Camille was both brave and impulsive so that was fun, but some of her background details needed straightening to be believable. I loved the gore and the action of the story, it really held my interest right through, aside from some of the details being wonky, it was definitely worth reading.
Camille is responsible for her sister, Ivory, and Yrish is responsible for the death of thousands. Once he starts killing, Yrish doesn't stop.. until he meets Camille, that is. It was a sweet story, and easy read. The climax happened a little earlier than I expected, and some of the drama of adding a human to the clan that I expected based on the early part of the book did not happen. The sex scenes were a little simplistic, but since I'm not reading for the sex, I didn't mind.
I found myself skimming a lot and the writing style felt familiar and then I realized she also wrote the naga series that I just couldn't get into.
The spice scenes were so quick and skipped over, the first one was literally one page and he just slammed it home w no prep and that was sad. She's a tiny human... fkn ouch.
A lot of the details also seemed to go on and on and I found myself bored until I got to more dialogue.
It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't amazing or something I would read again. I feel there are a lot of other authors who do orcs much more justice.
I enjoyed this story immensely. The interactions between the two of them are believable and the pacing of the romance is spot on. I wish there had been more specific follow-up on people from the bunker (the stupid chef). The one big thing that bothers me.... LOKI is the chieftain isn't he? Yrish is the commander of the troops. The first sex scene was kinda...odd. The rest of the sex scenes were much better.
