I have a major crush on…the Bookworm
But how do I get into her good books?
I’m Tennessee Jackson, wide receiver, touchdown scoring machine.
When Millie Conway interviews me for the school paper,
I’m caught a little off guard.
In all my years at Covington Prep, we’ve never shared a class.
Like, brains, bookish—it’s not really my thing.
She’s one of the smartest kids in school
Which puts her way out of my league
Yet there’s something about Millie that makes my heart skip a beat
But whenever I’m around her, I keep messing up
How do I get into the bookworm’s good books?

Millie
I thought that being Covington Prep’s sports reporter was my worst nightmare.
And it is.
All I want to do is write my book review column and share my love of books,
but now I’m following the Covington Chargers, interviewing players and writing football reports.
Tennessee Jackson helps me with my first interview
And sure, the confident football star is cute and tall and has all those muscles
But I'm happy in my world of imaginary book boyfriends
I don't need a real one.
And besides, we have absolutely nothing in common.
I'm not interested in him at all
So, why can't I stop thinking about him?
And when I learn his secret
Why does my heart care so much?

(Clean YA Rom-com) *Mini Review*

📚The Bookworm by Kylie Key📚

Book 2 in The Girls We Love series. [But can be read out of order]

Tropes and Things you’ll love:

❣️Jock + book nerd
❣️Sports Romance
❣️High school
❣️Opposites Attract
❣️Football Romance
❣️MMC is secretly dyslexic
❣️FMC is shy and has no confidence
❣️No spice, no swearing

Ok, this was actually really cute! Not my favorite, but still cute.
I’ve recently been getting into rom-coms and I feel like YA rom-coms are so relatable to me right now; because I’m a teenager in (homeschool) high school.
The whole jock x bookish nerd is a trope that seems to intrigue me, because in school it’s really uncommon for that to happen.

*~ Characters ~*
Millie was a cute and (shy yes) but she had this thing about her that made her intriguing, even to me. {It’s not just you who sees that, Tennessee!}I thought it was pretty cool that she was a sort of a reporter for the sports football team! -even though she knew nothing about sports-
Tennessee , Ten for short, was not the best MMC, but wasn’t the worst. I thought it was SO cute to see how he admired how smart Millie was and compare himself to her. On top of all this, all the other side characters were done well!

*~ Conlcusion ~*
I really liked this cute sports rom-com! It showed what a real high school couple (and im talking about a REAL couple who are complete opposites) should look like! I loved a lot of the quotes in this book, the author’s writing, and will be looking out for more of Kylie Key’s books. I would totally recommend this book if you’re looking for a sweet football romcom to enjoy, and definitely one that you’ll stay up reading till’ Millie and Tennessee get their HEA!

My rating: 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

⚠️ Age recommendation: 14+ ⚠️

🔥Romance: Up to non-descriptive kissing

🤬Language: none -except for a few darns

💣Violence: none really

LGBTQ content: none

POVs: Dual POV

I saw this book on Instagram reels and knew it was up my alley. I’m a sucker for football romances, so I decided to pick it up, and I really enjoyed it. I liked that it was so realistic to high school life, and it didn’t feel like the characters were too mature for their age group. They felt like actual high schoolers by the way they acted and how the characters fell for each other. The plot was light-hearted and easy to read. It was hard to put it down. I stayed up too late reading it because it was so addicting. All the side characters were fun, and I enjoyed learning more about them. The series is made up of stand-alones, so I read them out of order, but it makes me really excited to read the other books dedicated to the side characters in the story. I enjoyed the depth of all the characters, even the side characters. I liked watching Millie gain confidence in herself and be more adventurous. I related to her bookworm tendencies so much. It felt like I was reading about myself sometimes. I enjoyed how she always fought for what was right and was always caring towards others. Tennessee was so sweet. I’m such a sucker for football players. I liked how awkward he was talking with Millie. 🤣 I enjoyed seeing him step up as a brother and a son. He had a lot of depth and character development that was really well done. He was so gentlemanly, which was so cute.
There were a few kisses.

This is book two of the Covington Prep: The Girls We Love series and the main characters are Tennessee (Tenn) Jackson and Millie Conway. Tenn is the wide receiver on the school’s football (American) team who also tries to hide the fact he is dyslexic. Millie is a complete nerd and bookworm, writing book reviews for the school paper, who ends up having to write some pieces on the tennis and football teams, when she finds herself lacking sufficient credits for her class. She knows absolutely nothing about sports of any kind and is lucky enough to find a friend in Taylor, a star tennis player who moved to the school fairly recently and who takes her training really seriously. When another student on the paper’s editing team added an extra bit to her piece on Taylor, it was a rude shock and a nasty thing to do, to belittle Taylor‘s living arrangements but thankfully she believed Millie when she told her she had nothing to do with it. Now Millie has to do interviews on the players and their chances for the new season and has to rely on someone’s dad to help translate all the jargon and rules for her! She also takes photos of the players for her articles and manages to grab a few great shots that make the front page. She ends up interviewing Tenn, as he is friends with Max, who is Taylor’s boyfriend, as Taylor helps to give her some confidence by going with her to start. Tenn has never really interacted with Millie before as she has always been in the AP classes, whilst he is into all the different sports and struggles with his reading and writing, and has to attend special tutoring sessions.
He has only told one close friend about his difficulties and is mainly ashamed of needing help. Whilst he can’t stop thinking of and picturing Millie in his mind, he knows that she is clearly out of his league and that there would never be any way she would be interested in him. He has enough to worry about at home, with his parents arguing more and his mother drinking far too much! He tries to ignore his feelings, especially since he keeps messing up every time she is around. Millie should have continued being happy reading her romance novels and thinking of the prince in them, but Tenn’s face and body keeps getting superimposed on her page, stopping her from even reading a page of her book. It’s Homecoming Week and various clubs in the school have arranged events during the week, culminating in the grudge match against their rivals, who they haven’t managed to beat in over thirteen years! Millie was hoping Tenn would be interested in taking part in some of her bookish themed events, but he disappears. He tries to talk to her, but neither can seem to get a word out when facing each other, due to nerves. He is hiding an injury and his dyslexia from everybody, but Millie finally finds out his secret and he worries what she might do. The big game is at the end of the week and the Homecoming Dance is the following evening. He asks her to the dance in a roundabout sort of way, leaving her thinking it is just to make up numbers with their friends Max and Taylor.
Nothing could be farther from the truth and his mother coming to her pinnacle of suffering, rubs off on him and she has some wise words of his own, to give back to him just as he needs them the most. It allows him to see that he is not stupid or an idiot for not being able to read or write like many of his friends. He has his own talents on the sports fields and his dyslexia is just one small part of what makes him, him! He has to own it now and no longer be afraid of what others might think. A couple of disastrous events make him think Millie must hate him, but he finds out the exact opposite, after she found out his secret and looked into it herself, wanting to understand his issues and help to make it easier for him, without knocking his confidence. High school struggles and the first blush of young love all collide in this story, as two complete opposites learn to listen to their hearts and not worry so much about what others think. Another great read by this author and I can’t wait to read some more. I received an ARC copy of this book form BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I love reading Kylie Key’s books. I’m pretty sure I’ve read all of them. Her writing style is easy to follow and perfect for teens who just want a cutesy romance. It’s completely clean and the plot is so much fun to read. The characters have faults and imperfections making them more realistic. I love how they both grow as the story goes on. They become better people and learn so much. It’s a great story and I can’t wait for what comes next!

I adored this high school romance. The jock and the shy, quiet reader. I loved all of the facets of both of them and also of their relationships and families. I may have read a ton waaaay late at night because once I started the first page I couldn’t stop!

Very sweet! I love YA romances and the bookworm and the football player is a great idea. This book had some sweet romance but I really feel like it was about self-confidence and personal growth. It deals with alcoholism, just in case that's a trigger for you.
Max and Taylor were fun to see again and I am so happy that Tenn and Millie got a HEA!

Millie’s goal to become a reporter has brought her to cover her High School football team. But she knows nothing about football or any other sport, for that matter. Tennessee is the wide recevier and really good at sports. But he isn't the smartest one. Can opposites attract? Sweet

Could have been better

I almost gave this a 2 star rating. Tennessee, while overall a good guy, kept screwing up. He is one of those guys that make "jukes" aka insult others to make themselves feel better (he says so himself). He has issues with reading due to dyslexia, and so he plays it off and prefers to humiliate other before anyone humiliates him.
For example, when he lost a tug kf war game he said something like "Well, your a team of jocks, and we're a team of nerd." Implying he lost because of the "weak/nerdy" kids on his team. Then he kept ditching her at events for one reason or another (some for good reason but he kept doing it).
I for one would think the worst of a guy tbat constantly belittle me or people like me, kept leaving me stranded in places I was uncomfortable, and kept teasing and touching me as a shield when he played with his friends. Like....we are not 5. How is a girl supposed to guess you actually like her if you keep pulling stuff like that lol
But since we see Tennessee's pov, we as a read know he has a lot going on. Dealing with an alcoholic mother, insecurities about reading/feeling dumb, taking care of his siblings, a bummed knee during football season, etc. Towards the end we do see him slowly (VERY slowly) changing and trying to do better for Millie and himself.
Millie is confused by Tennessee's behavior and although she's attracted to him, she gets frustrated with how he treats her or the things he says. Honestly, they both were crushing but so scared to talk to each other, I really didn't feel much Chemistry betweem them. They didn't really have romantic moments because they didn't talk about anything outside her journalism assignments.
Was a bit disappointed but the ending was sweet and I did like a few of the issues the book tried to address so giving it 3 stars 😊

It was interesting enough

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2022...

***Spoilers here and there***

I don’t know once I got towards the end I was trying to hurry up and finish. I think I got tried of the book or something. It happens with certain books.

Not all though,, even though I liked this book and I enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next books to this series. I’m definitely going to be on the look out for them.

Also; I think that Tennessee was messing his self up when it came to Millie too. Because he kept saying the wrong things to upset her. Then on top of that he kept leaving without telling her. I was glad that he done better on the third round when he went to pick up his sister. Because of his mom drinking again.

Because he was clearly messing things up for himself. I could tell and everyone else that Millie knew. That Tennessee liked her. She was the only one didn’t think so. Because of the way he was acting and the things that he was saying to or about her.

I was glad when he got himself together. It sucked that he was hiding his disability. It’s nothing wrong with having disability. Especially dyslexia because of people has it. He seem like he was smart though especially with sports and other things. But he just had a hard time with reading. Though audiobooks is good for him. As well since he don’t have to read he can listen to them as well.

i usually don’t do this, but dnf at 25%

as i was reading, i couldn’t help but keep asking when this book was written, bc it reads like a 2015 wattpad story (except maybe less slut shaming lol).

bestie is 5’2, reads a lot, and doesn’t know anything about sports. The problem is that, at times, she comes across almost childlike. I mean like when she’s following the team around and she goes with them to the gym, she doesn’t know what reps and sets are. I understand that not everyone goes to the gym, but if someone is sitting on a machine where they are lifting weights and they tell you they do 3 sets of 20 reps each, i think most people would understand what you mean. Also, apparently she can’t lift 10 pounds with her legs? I don’t want to be rude, but for her to be an able-bodied 17/18 year old, to not be able to lift 10 pounds at the leg press is concerning.

All this to say, the writing and storytelling felt extremely childish and immature. It felt as though the author wanted to check every stereotype for the fmc, while writing little to no personality for the mmc

Once I started this I didn’t want to put it down. Definitely a slow burn YA romance.
I do wish that Millie and Tenn could have communicated a little sooner about things going on.
Millie is a bookworm; would rather stay home and read then go to parties or even football games. She becomes the new football reporter though so she has no choice but to go to the games. She is a great photographer and a good writer so everyone is enjoying her football articles.
Tenn is the wide receiver for the Chargers so he’s a popular football player. He feels that Millie is too smart for him and out of his league. He is struggling with things at home and a secret he is keeping.
I really wish he would have just talked to Millie sooner. He wasn’t very good at talking to her and then he kept abandoning her. Millie was definitely patient though and wanted to make sure he was okay. She ended up figuring out his secret randomly and then she ended up apologizing before they even talked about it!

could have been better

Tenn is not a nice guy, his disabilities aside. That’s no excuse for how he acted 90% of this book. I didn’t care for Cullen either. I was disappointed that the book finally got better around 90% and it felt that should have been at 60-70% in the book. There’s issues that had deep meaning that was just quickly fixed. I wanted better for Millie, who was a Really sweet girl. I was not impress with Taylor as her friend. And for Damn Sure not at all happy with how Tenn got a magical makeover in the span of two sentences.
I had not read Taylor book, I won’t be reading it either.
Why is the mean girl excuse and still mean in this book?
Also the book description makes it sound like from the start Tenn liked Millie & just didn’t know how to go about getting her to like him. Yeah NOT how this story plays out.

Aww this was so cute!! I actually enjoyed it more than the first book about max and Taylor. I won’t lie- at times I was frustrated especially with Tennessee, like why do you got to be like that dude?? I honestly, contemplated that they didn’t even suit eachother, but anyway it really turned around. Millie was such a great character and I looooved her style in the book, she was such a nice person and friendly. These two were super cute together. I liked Tennessee’s family dynamic and how it was resolved. I really enjoy this series, normally I just read the first book and decide otherwise but this has kept me hooked from the first book. I really like the football atmosphere and the whole plot.

Oh my goodness, Tennessee and Millie are so great as a couple! This is definitely a slow-burn romance, but done in the best way.

And I LOVE the football action in this book. It's clear the author knows her a way around a game, and it made the story that much more interesting. I love the team dynamics, too. That's something I always appreciate in a sports romance.

And Tennessee is right up there as a book boyfriend. I have a running list with my top guys on it, and he's in my Top 6.

Add to your tbr! It's in KU.

This was my first read from this author. I picked up this book because I'm a fan of young adult stories and I really enjoyed this one. I loved the first person point of view which is a deal breaker for me. Plus the whole "a guy who can have every girl has a crush on a bookworm" storyline was pretty amazing. I'll be reading more from this author in the future.

Such a cute YA story! Millie's a bookworm who writes the book review column for her school newspaper, but ends up as the sports reporter. Tennessee is the football star she interviews. There's all sorts of awkwardness between these two but I loved both characters. Tenn is a swoony book boyfriend, he comes off a bit rough but he's got a secret he doesn't want Millie to know about. Millie is as sweet as can be!

Not typical

IMO not a typical high school romance. Yes it was about a star football player and a bookworm, but the story wasn't easy for either of them. They were both battling with insecurities and it took them awhile to realize what was happening. It was sweet and full of character changes all through the book and not just by the main characters.

Really cute book, heartwarming, and I loved the wait it used Tennessee to represent dyslexia and all the kids hiding things about them in fear of others reactions. Honestly the reason it’s rated lower is that the writing felt very elementary, but I enjoyed the short chapters

Sweet YA book

A strong representation of a young man struggling with dyslexia and a young woman struggling with confidence. It’s a pretty typical ya romance with a bit of family drama mixed in. A very easy read.
