The Highlands #1

Beyond the Thistles

Rate this book
It’s been a long time since Walker Ironside left behind Scotland and the memories that haunt him. Yet after years of traveling the world as a bodyguard, Walker misses his homeland enough to return. To a village in the Scottish Highlands that plays host to an exclusive members-only club, Ardnoch Estate. If not happy, Walker is content working with the elite security at the club and maintaining his bachelor lifestyle. What he doesn’t need is distraction in the form of the enticing but too-young newcomer, single mother Sloane Harrow.

Sloane never imagined she’d get pregnant at sixteen. Or that a decade later she’d escape from California with her daughter, Callie, to start over in the Scottish Highlands. Hidden and safe from Callie’s dangerous father, Sloane is satisfied with their new lives. Her daughter is happy. Sloane has a stable job, a quaint cottage, a passion for baking that might just be turning into a business, and a huge crush on brooding security guard Walker Ironside. Unfortunately, the grumpy Scot seems immune to Sloane’s charm, but she can’t help but try to seduce him with cupcakes and baked treats whenever the opportunity arises.

However, when someone arrives in Ardnoch intent on destroying Sloane’s life, Walker is the first to step forward to protect her and Callie. Even if it means giving into temptation and awakening his own demons. Because in doing so, Walker faces failing not only to shield Sloane from her past, but to safeguard her against his own.

this mostly likely would have been a 4 star read if i hadnt already read SYs adair family series (which this series is a spin-off of).

the reason being is everything about this story feel very recycled, very copy and paste. so much so that i genuinely believed for a few chapters that i had already read this and just forgot because thats how familiar everything felt. its as if the events of the main series are happening again, this time to different characters.

but for some readers, this may be a good thing. i mean, its one the reasons i read all of the books in adair family series - because i enjoyed the consistent predicability. i knew what i was getting before i even opened the book - some suspense, most likely a kidnapping or death threat, a brooding love interest who will protect the woman from those threats, and a whole lot of angsty romance. its a formula that works.

so its too bad that i was actually wanting this to be different. not completely different, but something… fresher? that it would give something that the main series hadnt already. but that, unfortunately, was not the case. again, this could be either a bad or good thing, depending on what you are looking for. but, for me, it just felt old and used.

First of all, I need to comment on this audiobook.

I have no idea who Shane East is or what this man looks like but I’m convinced he’s the sexiest thing alive, okay.
His voice? Illegal. No one should sound like that. How dare he sound like that?! 😩

Go. Go bless your ears. You’re welcome! 🫠

Now, that I’ve gotten that out my system, let’s talk about the book.

My first Samantha Young and I enjoyed it quite a bit. (Thank you, Shane East)
It’s gotten me in the mood to read more romantic suspense.

I can’t say I necessarily loved the balance between the romance and the suspense elements here though. I think it took somewhat of a hit on the romantic progression between the two characters. The suspense towards the end felt a little…underdeveloped.

It was mainly lust driven which isn’t something that bothers me. Especially when it starts off that way and the characters choose that.

But at some point I want emotion and that component was missing since the agreement was for it to be sex only. Plus Walker was a closed-off bastard.

Again, I don’t mind if characters don’t want to open up to each other right away, but the readers should be privy to their turmoils. It feels dumb to be kept in the dark like that. 🙄

There was a therapy element incorporated which was such a missed emotional opportunity. I wish we were exposed to more sessions, since Walker was dealing with a lot and it would’ve added nuance. But you don’t know any of it till the end and I find it so annoying when authors do that.

I was hoping for things to be a bit more compelling than they were. Sloane was escaping a dark past, as was Walker. I like it when characters trauma bond…to an extend. 😅
There were things that they had in common and things that set them apart, but I can’t say I ever got a full understanding of the dynamic of their relationship. Other than the sex being phenomenal.

But I’m still calling this a win, since it wasn’t a complete flop. It got me intrigued to read more from this author and the sub genre.

Also, Shane East. My love. 🥰
I’m crushing hard. 🥲

Two words: OB. SESSED.

I love romantic suspense and this delivered on everything I love in a book. In the beginning, Sloane runs away to Scotland to hide away as the housekeeper at an estate for wealthy clients. She's taking care of her daughter and trying to lay low. She's always felt an attraction for Walker, though, who is a bodyguard working there too. When someone starts threatening Sloane and her daughter, Walker decides to protect them 24/7 and make sure nothing happens to them. I loved how protective Walker was and how they started a physical, no strings relationship first. Obviously they both had feelings, but both had hurts from their past making them hesitant to start an actual relationship. Walker especially is a very damaged hero and I just loved him so much.

And the suspense?? I loved how much there was in this book and how I was constantly kept on my toes. That definitely made Walker's protectiveness even more apparent and forced them into a lot of proximity! I also loved the close relationship Walker ended up having with Sloane's daughter and I loved her character. And this took place in Scotland, which was so atmospheric and I loved it. Definitely pick this one up if you love romantic suspense!

A romance between bodyguard Walker and housekeeper Sloane. Sloane has a mysterious past, but has been able to hide in Scotland employed at a private club retreat for the rich and famous. Walker is a guard that works at the estate. Sparks fly between the two, but Walker is wary of getting serious with the sweet, single mother.

Maybe it's just me, but as I've been reading the Adair series by Samantha Young, and now this spinoff series... these books have become a little bit too formulaic for me. I'll still read anything Young writes as she's one of my favorite authors, but this book felt overly long and I predicted just about every major event that happened. I'm curious about North and Aria's story, so hopefully that one will be good.

What's more embarrassing though? The book or the fact I was worse than Sloane and her inability to take a fucking hint?
The whole affair was beyond tired.
The romance, the pairing, the plot, the drama twists—the redundancy of it all. So disappointing.

I love this author's books—usually— and I was so damn excited about a grumpy bodyguard/sunshine single mom pairing with an age gap but this was painful to read. Everything was just so silly and bland. And silly. I've tried the first book of her Adair Family series and this was an obviously reminiscent experience. Especially the suspense part which was pretty risible and couldn't be taken seriously.

I should have cut my losses early and avoided the pathetic mush at the end: "I love you, Daddy... I forgive you." EXCUSE ME?! The same dad who tossed you and your baby out and refused to help you throughout 11 whole years? Just like that? He's forgiven? Why? Because he bequeathed to you his fortune on his death bed in a posthumous letter?
Fuck this book. Everything is tired. Even the HEA. 🥴

Thank God! I was not ready to leave the Scottish Highlands

The Adair family series is a tough act to follow but Beyond the Thistle held its own and I am completely enamoured. The perfect balance of romance, mystery and suspense, Beyond the Thistle is a must read.

Sloane + Walker

If you've read the Adair series - especially the last book - you already met Sloane and Walker.
Sloane got pregnant with 16. Her rich Bel Air dad basically disowned her after that and she had to stay with the baby's father. But that didn't work out either so she left Nathan when Callie was just a toddler. For the following years they tried to stay as far away from the violent criminal as possible. That's kinda how they ended up in Scotland now - where Sloane is happily working for the Adairs and dreaming of opening her own bakery.

After leaving the military Walker used to travel the world as the bodyguard of one of the famous Adair brothers, but now he's also settled down in Scotland - working security at the Adair estate.

It was insta attraction on both sides. But only Sloane is showing it outwardly. She just can't read Walker, he doesn't smile or talk much. But he seems to always be there to help her when she needs him.

Both Sloane and Walker have troubled pasts - will they finally be able to get that happily ever after together??

Eeep! A new Sam Young series and we don't even have to leave the amazing Adair world!

This was a great start for this new series!
You just can't help but love Sloane and Walker - and Cassie too.
They are so the perfect family already but they just don't know it yet! Too adorable!
I just adored Walker and how he softens (beyond his thistles) every time he's with Sloane and Cassie.
It takes them a while to get that happy end. Lots of bad guys and bad memories are in the way. But we'll get there.

I really loved reading this.
I was a bit mad for the slighty uninspired first danger moment. With all those bodyguards and knowing about the danger - that shouldn't have happened - Sam should/could've changed that a tiny bit.

But I still loved the book so much. I loved all the many Adair cameos.
And we already meet future characters for this Highland series.
GIMMEE!!

Like I already said in my reviews for the Adair books - I could totally imagine this as an amazing Netflix show. We already basically 'see' everything Sam writes about. She describes everything so beautifully. The people, the places... everything. I really need to see this on the screen!

From the covers to the final words ... this series will be just as beautiful as the Adair series!

BEYOND THE THISTLES was the perfect start for this new Adair spin-off series!
Adorable and funny and sweet and dangerous and heartbreaking and very sexy!
Run to your nearest bookdealer for your own Walker Ironside - this one is MINE!

Sloane Harrow grew up in California, and was pregnant at sixteen. Through the years life had not been kind to her, but her daughter was her whole world. Then trouble sends her running, and she ends up in the middle of nowhere in the Scottish Highlands trying to start over. She's been there a year, and still struggles to get by, but she has a stable job, a roof over their heads, and a love for baking that she hopes to turn into a business one day. She also enjoys getting to see the gorgeous security guard every time she goes to work. It's an added perk to the job to lay eyes on the man who starred in all her fantasies. Walker Ironside just did it for her. She'd never been so physically attracted to a man in her life. From the muscles, to the Scottish accent he had become her new crush. He was a man of few words, and appeared to be immune to her flirting, so she tried to hide how deeply affected she was when he was near.

Walker Ironside returns to Scotland after years of being gone. He's moved all around and worked in private security for the last six years for a Hollywood actor. He's now settled in at the Ardnoch Estate working in security at the members only club. He's a bachelor who doesn't do commitments and likes to live his life free of complications. Then a sexy single mom makes it clear she wants him. She catches his attention from the start, but is off limits. She's too young and he only does casual. Then circumstances have them spending more time together, and it's impossible to deny the intense pull between them. As he's trying to avoid temptation the past comes back to haunt Sloane. While trying to protect Sloane and Callie will he finally have to face his own demons?

Beyond the Thistles by Samantha Young is the first book in the Highlands series. It's a spin off of the Adair Family series, and takes us back to Ardnoch and the beautiful Scottish Highlands. I loved getting more of the Adairs, but also new couples. This book was a fabulous start to the series! I adored Walker and Sloane together, and their connection and chemistry was on fire. This story is an age gap, single mom, bodyguard, grumpy/sunshine, workplace romance full of angst, emotion, danger, mystery and suspense. It's about family, survival, second chances and unexpected love. I can't wait for more in this series! I'm completely addicted to this world! <333

Beyond the Thistles is book 1 of the “Highlands” series by author Samantha Young. It is a standalone contemporary romance. Dual POV with a HEA.

Tropes:
✔️ age gap
✔️ Scottish hero
✔️ small town
✔️ grumpy – sunshine
✔️ Bodyguard romance
✔️ Single mother on the run

Overall, Beyond the Thistles is a captivating and emotional romance novel that takes readers on a journey of love, danger, and personal growth. The chemistry between the two main characters, Walker and Sloane, is palpable and keeps readers hooked throughout the story.

Sloane is a strong and resilient character, who has overcome great challenges in her life. Her determination to protect her daughter and start a new life in Scotland is admirable. She was certainly no damsel in distress. Walker, on the other hand, is a brooding, reticent and complex character, haunted by his past and struggling to move on. The romance between them is a slow burn, with a bit of unnecessary drama.

The plot is well-paced, with enough suspense and twists to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Especially the ending I never saw coming.

The supporting characters like Callie, Sloane's daughter, and the couples for The Adair Family series add depth and heart to the story. The setting of the Scottish Highlands adds a wonderful touch to the story, with its picturesque landscapes and charming villages.

Overall, "Beyond the Thistles" is a must-read for fans of the Adair Family series and of contemporary romance in general. It's a well-written and engaging story that will leave readers satisfied and wanting more.

4.5 stars! First off, this cover! 😍 Second off, I loved Beyond the Thistles! The Scottish Highlands setting was honestly everything for this story. We have a single mom heroine, a gruff and grumpy bodyguard, and romantic suspense!

Sloane is a single mom to her daughter Callie. At the beginning of the story we see Sloane’s relationship with the father of her child and how he’s definitely not a good guy. Because of something that goes down, Sloane ends up on the run and leaves the U.S. We catch up with her later in the Scottish Highlands where she’s working as a housekeeper at Ardnoch Estate. The estate is a members-only club that is now a haven for famous people seeking peace and quiet from their celebrity lives, run by the Adair family (another series the author has). We meet Walker, a grumpy, broody, grumpy bodyguard of one of the Adair family members. He and Sloane work for the same family and run into one another often.

I was just pulled into this story immediately. The setting and the storytelling was captivating and I had to finish the story. Sloane is into baking and I liked seeing her with her daughter Callie as they have gotten used to Scottish life. Walker has secrets from his past and trauma, we do see him going to a therapist at one point which was nice to see (wish we got more of that). This does turn into a friends with benefits setup, first he tries not to give in but she clearly convinces him that’s what she wants too. Of course, this is a romantic suspense so we do see the suspense elements kick in and he becomes super protective over her and Callie. I just really enjoyed this one and now I can’t wait for the 2nd book out soon and want to go back and read the Adair series since it has some crossover!

A beautiful start to Samantha’s brand new spin-off series! If you, like many of us, were not ready to say goodbye to Ardnoch, you’ll be glad to know we are getting more stories inside this world we fell in love with. You remember Walker, Brodan Adair’s best friend and bodyguard? Well, you are not ready for this gentle giant and his love story with Sloane. Full of the characters we love and brand new ones, steam, cuteness, suspense and a whole array of feels, get ready for this wild start!

So, Beyond the Thistles is the first installment in Young’s The Highlands series, which is a spin-off of her Adair Family series. Focused on Walker Ironside and Sloane Harrow, who we already had a taste of in Until You. These two are very much attracted to one another, one wants to act on it and the other is trying not to. Walker is not a commitment kind of man but that changes when danger appears back in Sloane’s life. The brooding bodyguard will do anything in his power to protect his woman and her adorable daughter and that turns into an outstanding love story.

What dangerous, dangerous ground we were on.
But neither of us could stop ourselves.

When a book is able to grab and keep my attention from the very first page, I know I am likely in for a treat. Samantha Young is one of my auto-buy authors and she never disappoints me. I loved the Adairs and I cannot wait to see what she’ll do with this new series. I already know she started with a bang! The chemistry between Walker and Sloane is palpable and impossible to miss. These two are so hot for each other and when they act on it? FIRE. Mix that with cute moments with Callie, a whole lot of interactions with the Adairs and new characters you’ll love and a bit of drama and suspense and you get this wonderful and emotional novel.

I wanted to meld myself to Walker Ironside like we were two halves of one whole. This was love, I realized. This was what it was like to be truly, madly, deeply in love with someone.

Therefore, I am rating Beyond the Thistles with 5 STARS because it’s the perfect continuation of Samantha’s last series and a perfect start to this new journey we are starting with brand new characters in Ardnoch Estate. I seriously loved Walker and Sloane together, their chemistry, their connection and their feelings growing fast for each other. Also, I am a sucker for cute children and Callie sure was that and so much more! I don’t know what is coming next in the series (maybe Aria’s story??) but I am here for it. I cannot wait for more!

Sloane is a fiercely independent, single mum of her adorable daughter Callie. She is originally from the US but when everything in her life imploded, she was offered an opportunity too good to turn down. An opportunity to start her life again, where nobody knows her or anything about her past. Somewhere she feels safe and the ability to give Callie the life she deserves. Being tucked away in the Scottish Highlands feels like the best place for them both right now.

Walker originally comes from Scotland but left his home country and family when a tragedy tore them all apart. He has been working in security, traveling all over the world and most recently as a bodyguard for one of Adair brothers. After being offered a permanent job at Ardnoch Estate he decided that being back in Scotland wasn’t so bad and still working with the Adair family cemented the deal.

Sloane soon settles into life working at Ardnoch Estate, she makes friends and enjoys life in the small village. The estate plays host to the rich and famous but Sloane isn’t dazzled by celebrity, she just wants to do her job and then be at home with her daughter. She is soon enfolded into the Adair clan and loves being treated like a part of their own family.

Sloane loves to bake and has a dream of opening her own shop one day but that is a long way off yet, one step at a time. Walker has been the lucky recipient of Sloane’s baking talent and is a big fan. Coincidently Sloane has been fangirling him, nothing to do with food and all to do with his all round general hotness. Walker can feel the attraction and pull between them but he is all about no strings attached and she deserves more than that from any man she chooses to share that part of herself with.

Sloane knows that there is something there between her and Walker, yet he won’t make a move - so frustrating! She has all this pent up lust for him and he is the only guy she wants to help her release it. Eventually things do come to a head and it turns out they both want the same thing, something that mutually benefits them both. It’s around this time that the safe bubble around Sloane and Callie begins to break down. Someone is trying to put the fear of God into her - and it’s working. Walker is having none of it, he is fiercely protective of them and makes it his mission to keep them safe.

‘I’m the biggest fucking badass out there, and anyone who thinks they can terrorize you is going to wish they were dead by the time I’m done with them.’.

I love how Sloane went from being this scared vulnerable person morphing into a totally kickass, strong woman. I think she realised that she had a lot more strength and resilience than she thought she did. And Walker… everyone deserves to have a man like him. He wasn’t just a badass, he was also quite vulnerable and he grew so much being with Sloane. This is the first story in The Highlands series from Samantha. If you are a fan of the Adair family series, you will love this!

I have been meaning to read the authors Adair family series forever so when the opportunity came to read the first book in her new spinoff series I was SO in. Y’all, I loved it so so much and now I’m so glad I can go back to the prior series while I wait for the next book.

You may have noticed that over the past year or so I’ve been obsessed with romantic suspense and this is one of the best I’ve read recently. It had so many of my most loved tropes like a single parent, age gap, grump and sunshine, small town, and that underlying sense of danger that just works so well for me. It also had the most gorgeous setting in the Scottish highlands and an adorable kid with Sloane’s daughter, Cassie. And Walker was exactly the kind of brooding grump that turns me into a puddle because you just know that inside he’s soft and squishy. I can’t say enough good things about this one, it was spicy, romantic, suspenseful and amazing.

I finished the Adair series earlier in the year, so when I learned there was a spinoff I was all in. Aside from the characters in the Adair series, I absolutely LOVED the setting. Though I do have to say, I feel bad for our heroines as this area that is supposed to be so safe seems to attract the crazy exes! This was a great start to a new series. I liked that I had some insight based on reading the Adair series BUT also didn't feel like I would have missed out if I hadn't read that series first. We have a heroine semi in distress- Sloane- she had her daughter YOUNG and had to run to keep them both save. She is doing everything she can to make ends meet. Then we have Walker who is a massive GRUMP. He works in security at the estate where the Adairs live and Sloane also works. The buildup between these two was a tad bit too long for me. I also had a hard time with how much of a jerk Walker was to Sloane. I had a better understanding after we learned his history but still bro make up your mind- are you in or out? Sloane was a strong one. She was willing to do ANYTHING to keep her daughter safe. She knew her worth. When these two finally got it together, it was HOT and magical.

Sloane has been trying to make a move on Walker- the hot bodyguard- for a minute, but he seems immune to everything she is offering. She can tell he is interested but doesn't want to take the bait. Things shift between them though when Sloane starts getting threats. Now he is around her and her daughter all the time. Even though he makes it clear nothing can happen between them, Sloane wonders about what could be. When things start escalating towards her, he makes the decision to spend the night. Now it's on. They can't fight this thing between them anymore. But the number one rule is no feelings. Well Sloane agrees because what else is she going to do. She can't that she has already fallen for him. Now he knows her horrible ugly past and is still here. It isn't until she confesses her feelings that he really pulls away. She is done with this back and forth. She needs to what's best for her and her daughter. She knows what her heart wants but will Walker figure it out before this threat against her becomes a reality?

Walker is a brick wall when it comes to feelings. His role is to be a protector because he couldn't do it when it mattered most. He wants to make sure people are safe. He can't acknowledge the attraction he has towards Sloane. It is taking alllll of his willpower to not give in to this draw towards her. He knows he is being hot and cold, but he doesn't do relationships period. But then she gets threatened. And all bets are off. He will not let what happened to his sister happen again. Even if his heart is threatened. After they can no longer fight it anymore, they give in. And it is amazing. He is clear on his expectations- no future, no feelings. But he can't help but show her he cares in other ways. So when she lets him in on how she is feeling. He panics. He can't do this anymore. There are too many things he has to deal with before he can be what he wants to be for her, but will his timing be ok? Will she be willing to take him back after how up and down he has been? Or will he be too late like before?

This was a great intro to a spinoff series that I have now learned has time jumps in it so we can read about Thane's kids!! I am looking forward to reading the next one soon. If you haven't read this or the Adair series, I HIGHLY recommend them both!

She looked at me like I could save her from anything, but the truth was, she saved me. Every damn day.

Since I read the Adair family series, I was hooked and I couldn't wait to read Sloane & Walker's story! It was every bit of what I had imagined. I admit, I didn't like it when Sloane was the one who made first moves despite being brushed off by Walker so many times but as the chapters passed, I realised that if Sloane did not go after him, Walker wouldn't have gotten the push he needed to whirl in her direction. They had opposing personalities and part of it is why they fit so well together. The chemistry and sexual tension between them was palpable and they just belonged together right from the start, and adding Callie to the mix was like a cherry on top. I always enjoyed seeing her bond with Walker. She didn't have a male figure to look upto in her life until Walker came along and he did not have a family he could rely upon and take care of and I was so glad when he found his peace with Sloane & Callie! Also, the way the people live together like a family was just heartwarming to see. I loved Sloane from the very first page and the way she protected herself and her daughter was so brave! I loved the fact that she could defend herself and she knew she had the strength. The slow burn also was well executed and I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. The last few chapters were adorable and really funny. It was like getting a breath of fresh air after all that the characters went through. Overall , this book was enthralling and had me captivated but I felt like some parts were too stretched and could've been cut short. But I can't wait to read Aria & North's story next became there's definitely something interesting going on between them lol! 👀😂

This girl has no self respect. She lusts after him even in panic situations. Like how embarrassing is it that a guy knows you'll be up for anything and still rejects you.

That guy is there to help you and asking about your past and you're planning how you're gonna seduce him.

His constant rejections and her embarrassing pursuation was bugging me too much. I just can't stomach those. So I read some reviews and get to know that it doesn't get better. Fmc keep begging and mmc keep rejecting. So I give up at 40%

5 stars!

Oh, my heart, what a read! So many feels in this book, a grumpy/sunshine, age gap, single parent romance with a badass protective hero and a fierce-yet-relatable heroine, and a gorgeous love story that is sexy and intense, hard-fought-for, and full of so much emotion. I was completely sucked into this story and loved every moment of the journey.

This is the beginning of a new series for Samantha Young, set within the stunning world of the Scottish Highlands, and a very close spin-off from The Adairs series. I was thrilled when I learned that we’d be getting more books in this world, full of beautifully emotional and dramatic romance with well-integrated suspense storylines, and intense, passionate, and swoony love stories; and that’s exactly what we get with this one.

Sloane and Walker are new to Ardnoch, and both were introduced in the last book of The Adairs series, Only You. Walker is a stand-offish ex-military man who works security; he came to town as Brodan Adair’s bodyguard, and now works with the team at Ardnoch Estate, protecting the resort’s exclusive celebrity guests. Sloane ran from her life in the US and moved to Ardnoch to create a new life for herself and her ten year old daughter. She works as a housekeeper at the Estate, and bakes on the side, and she’s become best friends with Monroe, Brodan’s now-wife.

So, between work and their personal lives, Sloane and Walker have plenty of opportunity to interact, and Sloane has developed quite the crush on the grumpy man who seems to want nothing much to do with her beyond eating her baked goods. But when she runs into trouble, Walker is there to help her, and he becomes instantly protective of both Sloane and her little girl.

The chemistry between these two is intense, and the sexual tension is evident from the very beginning. But while Sloane wears her heart on her sleeve, Walker is more reserved, so it was to my utter delight that we get his POV and see that he’s feeling the attraction just as much as she is, he just has a truckload of baggage that he he’s unwilling to unload onto her, so he’s keeping his distance. Until this…

“My priority is my kid. And while you might look at me and see an exhausted single mom who needs to get gently laid and have a so-so, satisfactory orgasm, it’s us single moms who genuinely want a guy to fuck them wild and hard and give us multiple orgasms. And then go home so we don’t have to explain you to our kids or deal with you on top of the millions of other things we have to deal with on the daily.”

God, I love Sloane! She’s been through a lot, but she’s brave and bold, and she doesn’t hold back when it comes to what she wants, and when Walker finds himself unable to stay away any longer, they dive into a casual sex arrangement that is kinds of steamy.

“Get upstairs.”
Thrill filled me even as nervous butterflies fluttered wildly in my belly. “Are you going to be this bossy all the time?”
“Did you think I would be anything but in charge when we fuck?”
No.
No, I guessed not.
The man was a dominant, sexy bastard.

Holy. Freaking. Hotness! Walker may be closed-off and quiet, but damn, the man is a force in the bedroom, with sinful moves, and the sexy time is sizzling! As expected, ‘casual’ is only casual for a little while, and I loved seeing things change between them.

“I’ve never been in a relationship, Sloane. I don’t know if I know how to be in one. But if it’s enough for you to know I want to try, then stay with me.”

All of this is just the beginning of their story, because Sloane and Walker have a wild rides of ups and downs as they figure everything out. Between their mad chemistry, their intense sexual connection and their ever-growing feelings for each other, Sloane and Callie are still in danger and Walker is determined to protect them. And at the same time, Walker is still holding so much of himself back. It’s an emotional journey for them to find their way forward together, dealing with their personal issues and all that life is throwing at them, and I felt it all with them.

“You look at me like I can fix everything. I like the way it makes me feel,” I confessed gruffly. “I like that I’m that man for you. That someone as strong as you, as capable, wants me to be the man at her side.”

“You’re a hero, Walker … You
try like no man I’ve ever met. Everything you feel is in everything you do. No one has ever made me feel so safe and essential as you do.”

I love these characters so much! Walker is so irresistibly grumpy, he has a lot of demons that he keeps secret, and he’s just this big, fierce, bossy, badass. But he softens around Sloane and little Callie (their bond is just gorgeous!), and the way he cares for them is so beautiful! He feels so much for Sloane, and watching him come to some pretty big realisations as he falls harder and harder for her is just beautiful.

And Sloane is a freaking rockstar! She’s strong and brave, and even though she’s been through so much, she doesn’t let it get to her, marching forward to create a good life for her and her daughter. She’s funny, sweet and relatable, and she fights for what she wants, not prepared to settle for less, and I loved her so much!

Though they have so much to work through, the love between Sloane and Walker is obvious, and the way they care for, support, and protect each other without question is gorgeous to see.

“I’m going to work my ass off to make sure I get to keep you forever, Walker.”
His lip curled slightly at the corner. “Woman, you don’t need to work your ass off. I have no intention of going anywhere.”

The suspense storyline is woven into the story really well, bringing intense feels and adding to the already intense drama and romance. I love the way their story unfolded, such a fun, sexy, dramatic, suspenseful and beautifully romantic ride, and I finished this one feeling super swoony and loved their HEA.

“I’ve loved no one like I love you.”

We get to catch up with some of the Adair clan. Brodan and Monroe, of course, but also a fair bit of Regan, which I loved. You don’t have to have read The Adair series before diving into this one, but you’ll love the tie-in and all of the cameos if you do. Plus, those books are all amazing, so don’t miss out on them!

This is such a gorgeous read! I’m looking forward to more from this series, and with hints dropped about the net book, and cannot wait to get my hands on that one.

I loved it - 5 stars.

I finished this and all I kept thinking about was what's really the different between this book and all the books in the Adair Family series? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!! They're all a carbon copy of each other. But hey, I at least had Shane East's sexy voice to keep me company. And on that note, this is where I part ways with this series.

DNF at 37 per cent. I have three reasons:

1. The struggling single-mother trope was being beaten to death. Honestly, we get it! The thing is, with being a single parent comes a huge amount of resilience, and I felt like Sloane was missing that, even after ten years. I'm also bored of reading about an fmc that loves to bake. UGH. Come on, authors, please think of a new way to make women more endearing.

2. Walker didn't want to be with Sloane. He thought her life seemed too complicated and made it clear by shutting down her advances. I'm sure they’ll happily be together by the end, but Sloane going on a mission to seduce him into a no-strings-attached situation was embarrassing.

3. This is probably an oversight on my side, but I hadn't realised this series is linked with another by the same author - it's not mentioned in the blurb. Unfortunately, so much of what I read was spent reviewing the background of every side character, which I'm sure would be fun if I'd read the Adair Family books, but I haven't, so it felt like a lot of unnecessary info dumping.

Of all the Samantha young books I’ve read (and I’ve read them all) I think Walker and Sloane are my new favourite couple - add in Callie and it’s a perfect family

The twists and turns in this book
Keep happening right until the end and I was not prepared for some of them.

The usual amazing characters from the Adair clan are all in the book and it’s great to see more from Aria who is the hotel manager and I wonder if she’s one of the next books? Can’t wait for the next one!

At that moment, he reminded me of that Scottish flower- the thistle.
There were all these prickles on the steam and leaves before you could get to the pretty flower.
That was Walker.
You had to look beyond his gruffness to see he was a caring, good man.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Sloane.

Let's be real, I've been jonesing for this story as soon as Walker first set eyes on Sloane, and there interaction between them at the school bake sale?? SWOON. So when Sam announced that she was going to continue to write in the Adair world, my heart DEMANDED for Sloane and Walker's story.

I couldn't wait to see what Sloane's backstory was because in true fashion with everyone at the Ardnoch, everyone is running from something in their past. The challenge with this one, is we really had to put our thinking caps on to figure out what direction this one was coming from. There were lots of layers and possibilities with this one so it kept us on our toes.

I can't help but adore Sloane. The woman is a warrior with what she had to deal with in her past, but Walker being so dedicated to her and Callie's safety was completely swoony. It's a must read for all fans of the Adairs!

I’m ecstatic that Sam decided to extend her Adair Family series! I can’t wait to see where else this spin off series will take us!

I loved this book. I love Samantha Young. And I love this universe she created. Beyond the Thistles is the first book in a new spin-off series, it can absolutely be read as a standalone with no problem, but I do recommend reading the initial series—The Adair Family—just because it’s amazing and will give you more background on certain characters.

This book had all the tropes I love—age gap, single mom on the run, small town, brooding bodyguard hero—and they were so well executed. It was a pleasure to read and go on this journey with the characters. It’s also super hot, like hero is bossy in bed kinda hot, and so well written. The plot was interesting from start to finish, I love a good suspense and Samantha always delivers. I also adore the setting of the series, the Scottish highlands. Secluded castle. Honestly, what could be better?

Anyway, if you’re looking for a sexy contemporary series with great characters, amazing romance, and genuinely interesting storylines, look no further!

This is one of those books that I knew I would like and I was right! I really enjoyed this book. It is a romantic suspense that takes place in Scotland. I love Scotland and the Scottish accent so the audiobook was great for me.
The heroine, Sloane, is a single mom who fled to Scotland after a bad situation with the father of her baby. She is now working as a housekeeper for a members-only haven for famous people who need some peace. The hero, Walker, is a grumpy and broody bodyguard for one of the owners of the club.
When Sloane's past catches up to her Walker ends up taking over keeping her safe.
I loved the setting of this book and the story kept me entranced the whole way. I will definitely be picking up book 2.

We've met Sloane and Walker in "Only You." We've also seen the chemistry between them, and because of this, I couldn't wait to read their story. Now...let me tell you about it.

Sloane is a single mother to the beautiful Callie. She arrives in Scotland dreaming about a new life while escaping her old one, where her ex was a dangerous man. She is still afraid that he might hurt her, and this is why she can't tell her story to her friends. As soon as she meets Walker, she likes him straight away. Her attraction towards him is insane, but it looks like he doesn't feel it. But this is only on the outside. Because Walker definitely notices her, but he knows he is not looking for commitment. Every single day it becomes harder and harder for him to resist her, until one proposition from her about a casual affair takes down his defenses.

These two were incredible. They fit perfectly together. She is beautiful, soft, and brave, and he is the grumpy, rugged alpha man that needed her to steal his heart. Especially when he found out that she and her daughter are in danger. He becomes their fierce protector and the man of her dreams.

I loved their love scenes. The chemistry was insane, and there was plenty of smut to make smoke come from my ears. One more thing: the smut was just incredible, and Walker was one bossy man in bed 🥵🥵🥵.

I loved their love story, and I can't wait to read the next book from the series. It will be about North and Aria, and I am sure the book will be awesome.

I’ve found a new author to love! The small town suspense of a Catherine Cowles novel has married the steam of an Elsie Silver novel, while also being completely original in the Scottish highlands!

I have a new series to obsess over!
