The author of For the Love of Layla brings you the debut standalone in her new horror romance series Horrors & Heartthrobs…

What would you do if you were sucked into an alternate reality that seemed to be made up of all your worst nightmares? Fight? Run? Scream? Die? I tried all of those things before he found me. He looked like salvation. He was salvation until he wasn’t. We’re the only ones alive in this world of horrors, he made sure of it. He and I against it all. How did he survive this hell for so long? Thriving amongst the ghouls, monsters, and things I can’t even begin to classify. Easy, he just needed to be every bit as screwed up as the shit trying to kill him. I want a way out more than I want the miasma thick air in my lungs or the mysterious, dark-haired, green-eyed man stuck here with me. What does he want? I couldn’t tell you. All I know is the monster that was once my salvation doesn’t seem too keen on letting me go.
Now Showing is a dark horror romance and therefore depicts events and situations that could be upsetting to some readers. A full list of warnings will be available on my author website.

3.5 ⭐️

Now Showing by Callie Moss is a dark horror romance. I read the triggers and was like okay cool 😎 because I don’t get easily triggered in fiction but this had me slightly on edge. This book is unlike anything I have read and I was unable to stop reading. I was so captivated yet horrified but couldn’t stop flipping the pages. The horror was actually well written and I found myself surprisingly scared(I was reading this at night but I’m not usually a scaredy cat).

Tropes/What to Expect
✔️horror
✔️DARK romance 🥀
✔️alternate universe
✔️somewhat captor/captive relationship

The FMC is so whiny I swear all she did was cry but I sympathized with her because if I thrown into a scary, dark universe I would be crying too 😭 The MMC has a ton of emotional baggage and I felt so sorry for him. He just wanted someone to care and love for 🥹 seriously such a sweet book boyfriend.

Overall I definitely recommend. The only thing that kept this from a 5 star was at times I was confused by the world or certain situations. I NEED one of my book friends to read this asap so I can talk with someone 🖤 PLEASE CHECK TRIGGERS I would hate to recommend and cause any emotional distress to anyone. Your mental health is important.

✎𓂃“No matter how much good she sees in me...I am and always will be a monster. Her monster.”

I came here to be triggered. I came here to be spooked. What I got was an alternate universe, Beauty and the Beast/Stockholm Syndrome-esque dark romance…and in the end it wasn’t for me 🙈

The good things:
❥Kai: every damaged, deranged inch of this monster daddy 😈
❥The horror: not over the top (says a lot coming from me 🐔) but just spooky enough!
❥The concept: very interesting and unique!

The bad things:
☠ Felicity
☠ Felicity’s whining
☠ Felicity’s screaming
☠ Felicity’s crying
☠ Felicity’s stupidity and naivety

But my biggest complaint:
☠ This desperately needed to go through another round of editing. Typos, misspellings, and a severe lack of punctuation. I get it–I probably overuse commas and the like in my writing. Too much is, well, too much. But when two separate thoughts in a sentence are thrown together without punctuation?? It makes no sense and it hinders my reading pace!

For example:
“Their voices trail in from the kitchen as Carrie his mom helps Josh get a snack of his own I stare ahead, watching Aladdin help Jasmine onto the magic carpet doing my best to ignore the bully sitting next to me or his friends at his sides.”

There were so many instances of this that I very nearly DNF’d, as it made its 272 pages feel extremely long to me 😬 (sorry Divinity!!!)

I can’t say I’d recommend this one but I’ll at least save you the trouble of going all the way to the author’s website for the trigger warnings:

Graphic Sex, Language, Intense Horror. Themes of Forced Proximity, Child Loss (not between main characters), Flashbacks of Remembered Sexual Trauma of a Child, PTSD, Deeply Disturbing Depictions of Psychological Torment and Mental Illness

I’d personally add in “spiders” to this list bc SORRY they triggered me!!! 🕷️

-----------
doin this one for you, my boo divinity 🫶

lol not the author dragging you to her website for the list of trigger warnings 😅 (i checked–it is actually a FULL page of TWs for all of her books)

3.5 stars. This was definitely a unique experience. We follow our lead, Felicity, into an alternate dimension where she is held in an abusive, codependent relationship with Kai. Now she was involved in some fairly similar circumstances in the real world, which drew a ton of parallels between past and present. Plenty to read into and have fun interpreting. However, I did experience a good deal of reader fatigue while going through this. Jumping back and forth in time, being in the different dimensions, crossovers, visions, the relationship dynamics, etc just became an awful lot of sift through. In fact, there were several points when I was really unsure of the purpose of the story. Now the authors clearly put a lot of time and effort into building this out, and part of my critiques may come down to just being a mismatch for my tastes. But it ultimately all came across as very overcomplicated and hard to follow. Cool visuals, some intense sexual situations, good character development for both Kai and Felicity, an interesting premise, but all those good things were bogged down a bit by the sheer volume of concepts that were taken on all at once. I know this is the first book in a series, and I can’t speak for the sequel, but I think an easy solution would have been to split this into maybe 2-3 separate books, giving all the ideas time to simmer and organically grow. This could have also benefited the readers from becoming overwhelmed and taxed, too. Again, a very strong effort, but not without some core flaws.

“A fate of hell and torment here with me because no matter how much good she sees in me... I am and always will be a monster. Her monster.”

I was very intrigued by this dark horror romance. This fmc gets trapped in this “monster-apocalyptic” world. The fmc meets the mmc (dark, brooding, mysterious) and they work together. Then the fmc realizes she might not know the mmc as well as she thinks she does.

I enjoyed it for what it's worth. There were some grammar problems though and cringey moments. Also, the fmc is very whiny but that didn't bother me as much as I think it would to a lot of people. There were some parts of the story I was a little lost and confused about.

Overall this was a solid read. Idk if I would recommend it though.

2.5⭐| 3🌶️

[PLOT]
Felicity finds herself in an alternate dimension with the only other living non-monster as they unravel their trauma, fight skinwalkers, and fall in love in this dark and romantic thriller. Fans of Stranger Things will really enjoy this one because the alternate dimension really reminded me of the upside down, only this time it's not Vecna at the helm.

[PROS]
The world building, ghastly ghouls, and character backgrounds were really solid and that's definitely why I kept reading. However, I had a lot of issues with the book as a whole:

[CONS]
- Our MFC Felicity. The screaming. The crying. It was over the top and SO repetitive. There were other ways our author could have shown how frightened and upset she was without resorting to what seemed like theatrics.
- The editing. The run on sentences, sentence structure, and basic grammar issues kept taking me out of the story so I could decipher WHAT was actually trying to be said. If this gets cleaned up, I think it would be a better experience overall and I would definitely increase my rating. It read more like a fanfic than a novel.

**SPOILERS**
- The ending. Felicity went from hiding under one man (her friend) to another (our MMC Kai) and *checks notes* all she had to do was try to kill herself? And THEN once they return to the normal world, she finds out her father has passed and she's just...okay with it? Out of ALL the moments in the book, the one time it makes sense for her to cry and she just walks off with Kai? I had to suspend my belief a bit for that one.
**SPOILER FREE**

[IN SUMMARY]
The spice was FANTASTIC and another saving grace for this book due to the build up. Overall a really solid premise but some missed basic character development, unclear plot points, and poor writing.

I had every intention of going into this to end up loving it but it was really bad. It wasn't even about the plot which was quite original per se or about the MCs - altho a little boring to me.
Of course I understand it must be hard to level some of this author's Heroes: NO ONE can ever compare to Vosz from Welcome Home or Liam from For the Love of Layla... but the real problem here was this book needed an editor. It was difficult to keep up as there were many confusing mistakes and phrases, I found it so distracting and multiple times I wanted to dnf so I skimmed a lot.
It was absolutely nothing compared to Welcome Home which was literally one of my favorite reads of 2023. Still, I look forward to the next one in this series hoping it'll be as good as Welcome Home.

4.5 stars.. rounding up to 5 (bc goodreads..). Loved this!! Perfect amount of dark and suspense. Story very different from anything else I’ve read! That other world was super creepy.. kept me interested the whole time! Only took off that half star bc this book could use some editing. I found myself having to reread paragraphs a lot due to the lack of punctuation in spots.

This review might contain mild spoilers.

Stats:
💁🏻‍♂️ H: Kai is traumatized past (very dark), obsessive, possessive, OTT, alpha,
💁🏻‍♀️ h: Felicity is a doormat (in a not very annoying way), kind of TSTL in the beginning especially for being a horror romance,

Another day of not standing up for myself won’t kill me, but Kai might

Tropes: Captor/Captive (though this particular trope is not very darkly explored), not very smexy (it is not a slow-burn but no smexy times until 3/4 of book I guesstimate), HEA,
Triggers 🚩: on-page-descriptive-s*icide (no one dies), mentions of ch*ld-SA,
OW: OW who? LOLZ there's just the two of them in the world 😈

this is the first time in so many years I've touched another living thing.

OM: She has just gotten out of a very (not-physically) abusive relationship with her married-with-kids professor when she stumbles into his world. There is a monster pretending to be him in Kai's world. This professor makes an appearance in the Epilogue. No OM drama

I can make this bearable for you. I'll make you happy I swear. I'll learn how to be everything you need little bird.

Overall, this is not a light-hearted read. It is quite a palette cleanser (imo), but I liked it. It is a slow-burn in the sense that if you're expecting something (smexy) to happen quickly between them in the first quarter of the book, then it doesn't.

“I'll be there among them, on my knees for you. Only you.” I kiss her cl*t, again and again. Softly. Lovingly. “Until I earn my place at your side. I'll protect you, love you. I'll become everything you need me to be.”

Felicity goes into a theatre to escape her life for just a few hours and in her moment of sadness she gets transported into another world. Time moves differently here and there are creatures out here that only want to k*ll her it seems. Here, she is rescued by Kai a seemingly sane stranger that saves her and then consciously keeps making choices to save her from the creatures. He has been here long enough to predict the place but there are moments when I just want to st*b Felicity 🤦🏻‍♀️. She knows the place is dangerous and keeps throwing loud tantrums all the time and ignoring Kai's advice knowing he is the only one who knows how to survive.

“It’s okay little bird. I won’t let him touch you. None of them. My little bird.”

But don't worry she does get better in the second half. She starts knowing Kai along with us and everything makes sense. We learn how the world she is stuck in came to be and who created it. Honestly for a book with paranormal and horror themes the "magical ability" of this world's creation is never truly explained. Another thing, the monsters are very difficult to envision and the horror aspects only last a few paragraphs so its never really scary.

“You aren’t my prisoner little bird. You’re my everything. I'll make this world bow at your feet.”

Once she starts to learn about the world she realizes the only way to escape is to d*e and of course our boy-Obssessed Kai can't allow that. he would follow her anywhere.

“You think dying will take you from me? You’ll be mine either way.” My lips find the bloody skin at her throat she cries out leaning into the bruising bite I leave there, “I’ll keep you. Let you kill me hundreds of times, take your monstrous cunt a hundred more but I prefer you like this. I need your fucking heart how it is now even, if you hate me. I love you delicate and alive. Wild and sweet. This is how I want you, but I’ll have you with me forever, no matter the state you’re in.”

Maggie Fern is Callie Moss' pen name and book 2 is out soon. If it's anything like this one, I would love to read that one as well. Overall, I loved the book and its a good read.

So honestly this is more of a 3.75 for me. This is definitely a dark horror and I have read and enjoyed those before but for some reason this book and I just didn't connect. I think it may have been felicity who I admit recently had a bad goes of things with getting into a relationship with her professor. She is basically a self-proclaimed crybaby which didn't bother me too much but her complete lack of self-preservation and not listening to the rules or being aware of her surroundings over and over just got a little annoying to read.
I did enjoy Kai a little more and felt really bad for him because he has a terrible upbringing and really saw himself as a monster because of it that it literally manifested into real life for him. I liked his near instant obsession with her and wanting to keep her safe even when most of the time that meant her antics dragged him into danger.
I think what it could be is that while I enjoyed kai's obsession with felicity these were two individuals that have really distorted and damaged views of themselves that at times, I think that is what stopped them from really connecting for me. They just may have been too damaged for one another.
So, I think this definitely hit on the dark horror part of the book because it was really creepy at parts. But while I may have really liked Kai and tolerated felicity I just didn't feel them really connecting so I would say on the romance aspect is what stopped it from being a 4 for me.

this book is about felicity who recently found out her professor who she has been seeing is married. After being confronted by his wife in a daze she walks into a theater to sit and process what has happened. But falls asleep in the movie theater only to wake up to a world of horror where she is rescued by this mysterious man who has survived in this realm for 15 years and tells her there is no way out and he will keep her safe.

Tragedy to Inner Peace

I was definitely not expecting the fantasy element in this story. It was wholly unique and engaging, I never knew what would happen next, and the suspense was beautiful. The horrible things Kai went through deeply hurt to read, I honestly just wanted him to get every good thing he desired even if I disliked Felicity — if she makes him happy, that's all that matters.

That said, Felicity was a difficult fmc to stomach. Her crying didn't bother me, it was the constant disregard for self-preservation that was tiresome. Over and over again, this girl knowingly and purposefully almost kills herself; putting not just her but Kai in danger. This goes on throughout the ENTIRE book. She has moments of sound rational thought, but then she goes back to being a moron at the drop of a dime.

The book is heavily carried by Kai. His struggle, horrible traumas, and the ensuing creation of his pain were painfully endearing to him as a character.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this novel. The idea is fresh and dark in all the best ways, and there is a very satisfying conclusion. Aside from some minor grammar/stream of thought issues, this makes for a relatively quick engrossing read.

Callie took me on an unexpectedly emotional ride with this suspenseful journey. Kai and Felicity’s heartbreaking journey burrowed under my skin and nested in my soul.

Felicity broke my heart constantly with the pain she had to endure that wasn’t just inflicted by other individuals, but also her own mind. Thru glimpses of her past I saw just how far she had come and every battle she won (even though it might not seem like it). She came so far through the dark and made it back to the light so much stronger.

Kai earned a special place in my little black heart. This young man dealt with so much and so many nightmarish things, I completely understand why he made himself the king of the monsters. This battered soul was rebuilt by the strength Felicity didn’t even realize she had and Kai became the man he deserved to be because of it.

Yes this is a horror romance novel, but Callie wrote it in such a way that it tugged on my heart numerous times while keeping me on the edge of my seat at others. I hated what happened to both of the characters but was thankful that it brought them together and they were able to get their much needed HEA. In my eyes, this is a sleeper hit that deserves much more attention than it has received.

Calm down. You need to calm down. She can't know. You saw how she looked at you… “You’re okay. I'm here little bird. You’re safe. You’re safe.” I say it out loud but meant it for my own ears. Like holding her in my arms isn’t proof enough that she hasn’t left that this isn’t another cruel game. That I'm not alone.

“You’re soft.” He nips, “So f**king soft I know I'll hurt you.” His teeth find my flesh harder and I brace for the pain, finding only pleasure when his teeth bare down on me. I moan clutching him to me so he can’t leave. Can’t change his mind. “I'll ruin you little bird.”

I loved this book so freaking much! It has elements of horror, thriller, spice, tragic backstories, forced proximity, and this huge mystery around where the h*ll they even are. This story felt all consuming to me, it haunted my thoughts as soon as I started it and I could not put it down. I also wasn’t expecting to feel all of the things this book made me feel, I was panicking right along side Felicity and my heart broke for both of the MCs, but especially Kai. Callie Moss you have gained yet another loyal reader, my little dark and twisted heart loved this so much!

This novel is like being in a horror movie that the two main characters can't ever turn off. Felicity ends up in a alternate reality, a horrorscape, that's a living nightmare. The only other person there is Kai. Kai becomes her protector from all the dark things in this alternate world. Kai is a self professed monster and Felicity is his little bird, trapped with no way out. Kai knows more about this place then he let's on. The more time Felicity spends in this place, the more she forgets all the trouble she left at home. Felicity gets tired of all the nightmares. Felicity is going to get out one way or another. Kai is not just going to let Felicity go though. This book definitely has trigger warnings. Tropes: Horror, supernatural, erotica, thriller, obsessed, explicit, horror romance, dark, and dark romance. This book is definitely different. As far as horror romance go it is worth reading. Does contain dark subjects. I love the last names they both pick and what that represents to them.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Best Horror/paranormal Romance!!

This book was amazing! I went in blind and I’m so glad I did because my jaw was on the floor. Felicty goes to a theater after her life goes to hell and all she wants is to watch a movie but she falls asleep. When she wakes up she wakes up in a different/mirror world. Everything wants her dead until she meets Kai (more like Kai finds her) She is wary of him, he looks like a human (sometimes) and he decided he wants to keep and protect her.
Kai becomes obsessed with keeping her and he will do everything (even lie to her) to keep her forever with him
The plottwist had me staring at the wall (Even though I saw it coming) We get to know why Kai is stuck there and when the reason is revealed my heart broke for him
All he wanted was to be loved😭

I 100% recommend this book!!!

📚✨ 5-Star Review ✨📚

Now Showing by Maggie Fern completely blew me away. The world in this book was so fascinating to me.

The old theater setting had a creepy, nostalgic vibe that I just loved! And the horror elements? BRILLIANT. I mean, a gumball machine of eyeballs? Not to mention spiders. My skin was crawling.

I also realized I might have a weakness for cinnamon roll MMCs because Kai? SWOON. I wanted to jump into the book just to hug him – he's got my heart, no question. I was literally kicking my feet and swooning the entire time! 🥹

This book was dark and deep, so definitely check those trigger warnings. But it was also so entertaining, gripping, and incredibly well done. Maggie Fern is a genius, and I can't wait to read the next one.

Highly recommend for horror romance lovers who want that little extra something! Check it out!

This book is a dark horror romance, so be sure to read the trigger warnings before diving in!

In this book, we follow Felicity going through a heartbreak caused by a man who never deserved her. We also follow Kai, a dark psychopathic man caught in this world of horror. They both experience trauma and learn to get through it together. This book does have a HEA, but it does get dark and heavy. The horror aspects of it were amazing and it kept me up for days on end because I HAD to know what happened next! This book is about two people who are broken, that grow together and learn to heal together! It's spicy, it's gripping, it's horrifying, and it's beautiful! I'm so in love with this book, and Kai became one of my new book boyfriends! Well done Callie!!!!!!

extremely different. I enjoyed it but I would have loved it if the execution would have been better. It felt very rushed in spots and the holes it created in the plot shows that. So many times I was internally yelling- ask more questions!
but nope.
Also her attitude made little sense- she was a doormat going into it- trapped in a monstrous world is not the time to decide to become a B(itch). I think the author was going for her become tough- HA! I never saw her as tough, she came across as TSTL sadly- which I really dislike.
Despite that I immediately started reading Welcome Home- I actually found that book first then once I got it on KU realized I must have picked up this one during one of those free events because I already had it.
Fingers crossed Welcome Home delivers.

No matter how much good she sees in me, I am and always will be a monster... her monster.

Rating ⭐️ ⭐️ .75

I am a huge fan of dark romance books.. but this book somehow disappointed me. The FMC.. she was soooo whiny and she was crying all the time.. I wanted to see her being brave at some point, but I feel no that won't be happening..

I loved Kai's character alotttttt. He was very well written and presented.

The story at some point was confusing. I read so many dark, gore books and the books with dystopia era.. so i know the building is different in such cases. But here i felt it was very confusing.

I wanted to devour Kai's character but i wasn't able to due to so many confusing statements.

Kai was the only reason I read this book. But it could have been much better.

This is a dark romance, read the trigger warnings!! Read the trigger warnings again.

Now that that's out of the way...

Kai is a super dark psychopath, but it stems from some serious trauma.
Felicity is light and goodness but as a results of her own trauma gets pulled into Kai's nightmarish realm.

Despite the dark theme, this story is about seeing people as humans - with flaws and insecurities - but not allowing that to mask who they truly are inside.

Without spoiling the story for everyone, just know that there is a HEA.

I have been fortunate to be on Cals ARC team for her last couple of releases; this book was received for free in exchange for an honest review.

I was looking forward to reading this after seeing the reviews and lack of 2 star, but unfortunately this was a no for me.

Felicity was really hard to connect with. At first I liked her character, but once she’s thirst into the new “world” she became so frustrating with her lack of self preservation. I also didn’t like how view and treatment of Kai. She would always comment on him being very hot-and-cold, but really it was her who was acting that way.

I liked Kai’s character the most and it’s a shame Felicity sucked bc if it weren’t for her I would’ve kept reading to learn more about Kai, but considering it’s only them that wasn’t the case.

2 stars for Kai and his pierced dick

Horrifically Hawt! This is hands down my new favorite horror romance. I was so excited to get an ARC copy of this book that I read it in one day! If you like your spice with some scares, this is the series for you. As always, Moss writes complex characters that pull at your heart strings and have you drooling over them all in one page. The chemistry, plot, and terror were palpable and I’m always blown away by her writing. I’m absolutely ravenous for the next installment of the Horrors and Heartthrobs series!

Horror and dark romance, my two favourite genres. Combine them and it’s one hell of a good time.

In all honesty, it did take until the 40% mark for me to be super invested in the story, however once I hit that Now Showing was completed within the day.

A HEA is all a girl can ask for, and despite Felicity and Kai both having many things still to heal from, it was still achieved for our king and queen.

This is my first Callie Moss and most definitely will not be my last!.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

What 😭😭 what 😭😭
I’m so glad I found this book and also emotionally wreck and content at the same time. Why is no one talking about this book. I devoured the pages like air.

The characters 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The world 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The plot 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
THE ENDING 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

CAN I JUST SAID IM GLAD FELICITY WASNT A DUMB FEMALE CHARACTER. It wasn’t her nightmare world she didn’t know the rules or how the creatures / monsters worked there. Her best bet was probably listening the guy who’s lived there for 15 YEARS and not being like “nah I’m gonna sulk 😤”

Just when I thought Callie couldn't get any better - she releases this absolutely incredible horror romance.

This is Felicity and Kais story, it's filled with nightmarish monsters, heartbreaking pasts and spicy scenes. I couldn't put this book down once I started, I had to know what was going to happen with all the twists. (The whole book gave me Channel Zero vibes if anyones seen that.)

A truly fantastic read from Callie, she just gets better with each book!

I’m loving Callie’s books and even though horror is not a genre I usually read I was excited to start this . This follows Kai and Felicity it’s filled with heartache at what they went though in their past , spicy scenes and monsters creeping out everywhere . There are several triggers especially what Kai went through in his past so please check Callies website for the warnings if you have any triggers before reading.

Every single man Callie writes, I fall in love with!!

Now Showing is a dark horror romance. Make sure to check the trigger warning.

Felicity and Kai will have you lost in their world!

There is so much pain and heartbreak in their pasts, crazy twists you won't see coming and amazing spice that will have you sweating! I finished this book 2 days ago and I still cant get it outta my head.

This is a must read and I can't wait for more from Callie!!
