What happens when you fall for the Vice President of the Hammers MC? You get hurt! Harper Banks knows this too well.
So, when she discovers she’s pregnant, she decides she can go it alone. Who needs a man anyway? Especially one that’s already got a pregnant ol’ lady. Kain’s made it clear if she doesn’t want him, he’ll be sticking by Ginger.
Walking away from the only man she’s ever loved, is harder than she anticipated. Not only does she have to see him all the time because she works at the club, but her best friend is married to the club’s president, Cooper.
Secrets, lies and drama are making a regular appearance in Harper’s life, but walking away doesn’t seem to be an option. And when the truth finally gets out, the consequences are catastrophic.

Kain brings us another ride on the HotMess Express. This situation was introduced in the last book (Cooper), Kain and Harper were fooling around when he got back together with his ex (Ginger). She continued to chase/sleep with him after he was back with Ginger, even after they announced their pregnancy. Eventually she too got pregnant, and we were told he offered to leave Ginger for her, but she turned him down… but then continued to smart off/annoy/chase him every chance she got.
I read this series because I needed easy OTT shenanigans, but like the previous book… it won’t be for everyone. Especially the safety gals, or readers interested in something realistic, developed, or romantic. Basically, this is for readers looking to get lost for a few hours with mindless trashy soap-smut.
It’s similar in many ways to the last book. Kain is a jerk, Harper is pretty pathetic, and there’s loads of OW drama, plus we have another h that magically “quiets the noise” for her hero. The big difference is that technically Harper is the OW… sort of the club bunny (barmaid) weasleing her way in between the H and his Old Lady.
I didn’t enjoy this one as much because I found Harper and Kain even more unpleasant than the last two. Kain isn’t sleeping around as much as Cooper, but he felt weak…. And he’s a terrible person in general.
It’s a shit move, but right now, I have no choice. I must put Ginger first, and if that means Harper will hate me for now, then it’s how it has to be.
“You’re dead to me, you and that fucking kid,” he spits out as they drag him from the room.
And where Mila had a teeny-tiny baby backbone… Harper has nothing. She rejects him but then chases him around playing games to annoy him like a 10-yr old. (their relationship was quite immature) Then stubbornly keeps coming around despite being told multiple times to stay away by the H and her friends. Sometimes she was so dumb.
I pursued him relentlessly, playing games, making him jealous, and even after Ginger came back, I didn’t step back. I chased him, knowing he had a girlfriend. I’ve become the type of person I hate. I’ve become just like my father.
“I don’t know why you thought it would be a good idea to go and see her. You slept with her ol’ man behind her back and got pregnant.
There’s a side plot of Harper’s dysfunctional family dynamic that could’ve been interesting, but it wasn’t really explored.
Bottom Line- This didn’t work for a few reasons. First, I didn’t like the scenario. I find it easier to take when the OW is the one trespassing and evil, but here, Harper was the one overstepping… and I couldn’t really hate Ginger because she had a good reason for acting the way she did… I actually felt sorry for her which didn’t help me. Also, this series is very formulaic, and this is the second book, so my patience for terrible people acting terrible isn’t as great. BUT, the biggest issue is that it just isn't that soapy. There isn't a serious tone to it- no real feels; it isn't fleshed out or romantic... so I needed loads of drama-llama to keep me going... and it just wasn't there.
The ending was also rushed ....POOF... they're getting married, and they haven't even been in a relationship...and things felt a smidge lazy/manipulated because the narrative is rewritten.
After chapters of drama, sleeping with OW, pushing away, acting like assholes, I needed more than 5% to tie it together for a believable all-in/couple goals HEA.
Triggers-
OPP Shenanigans-
** Random thought- There’s this ongoing theme with the club girl Lacey causing trouble but it never being addressed. In Cooper, Lacey was his ex’s BFF and instrumental in trying to come between Mila and Cooper. Later it’s insinuated she slept with Cooper, but it’s never mentioned again. Here, we’re told Lacey told Jase’s ol’ lady (Kayla) he slept with Kim. (We’re also told Kim is crazy, but she’s watching the babies later 🤷♀️) Then we’re told Lacey was the one to inform Ginger that Harper’s baby was Kain’s, and again she takes the blame and never points the finger at Lacey. In Tanner, Lacey brought Melissa (his OW) back to the clubhouse and said she could stay knowing she just broke him and Brooke up.
Kain the H is a total ass to his 2nd baby Momma Harper for 70 % of the book. He is constantly preferring his first gf/ow/Ginger. He stays right by Ow’s side goes to all of her baby appts etc. Harper was always so understanding of Kains assholery. Personally I hated him and didn’t buy his quick turn around. He was just too much of a jerk for 3/4 of the book, and absolutely no groveling. He lets the ow constantly beat him up which is a no go for a Tough biker — no one loves a pussy biker- grow some balls Kain! Also he’s constantly cheating one way or another. I love a good cheating book but YOU MUST HAVE A GOOD GROVEL !!!!! I gave this 3 because I stayed invested but it fizzled at the end because it became about Harper’s family drama with her parents and it was just silly and boring— so I skimmed.
If you want to become depressed overnight this is the book for you. We have our heroine Harper. She comes from a wealthy family but her dad is abusive to her and her mother, but somehow also has a young wife that he treats right and she helps cover it up for him out of fear for abuse of her mom. She is knocked up by the worse heroine I have ever has the misfortune of reading, Kain. Main has no redeeming qualities, not one. He isn't truly attractive, he isn't smart (it actually seems he is incapable of having or understanding a logical thought), he isn't kind, he isn't caring, he's actually trash; anyone and everyone with sense would say, hey that's man is a piece of shit don't waste your time, but no we don't get that, this book doesn't do sensical. Despite all of the emotional and physical abuse this man dishes out to Harper, no ones got her back they keep using her and depending on her to care for him, his crazy bitch, and their baby while she and her one baby get to take the back seat. They keep giving her club-related responsibilities despite her not being apart of the club or gaining any protection from it. Harper is also the epitome of a doormat. Every male I'm her life treats her like shit and she just doles out love, support, and good wishes. She never truly stands up for herself or establishes any boundaries. I am so disappointed in this book and the fact that I wasted my time on such crap.
I was really looking forward to Kain and Harper’s story after reading Cooper. However it was a let down. Harper was annoying after being told to stay away she just kept going back, she had no back bone. It was disappointing.
It’s a complicated book! In one way I love the characters and in one way I hate them. I understand Harper in one way but at the same time I don’t. She is weak for Kain. I get it. But when he said that he didn’t care about her and their baby she should just have run as far as she could! He don’t deserve her. But sometimes love makes you do stupid things. These men of Hammers MC are assholes! Not sure how to feel. But the book is a really good read! So read it.

Drama ✔️ Other woman ✔️ Pregnancy ✔️ Alphahole✔️ Angst and heartbreak ✔️✔️ This book brings it ALL. Be prepared to yell and throw your kindle. You may even curse Ms Janes name. When I get in a book funk and need a good book, I can always count on a Nicola Jane book. This book and series are fantastic.

What the heck kinda drugs did Nicola put into this book?! it was unputdownable.. is that a word?... anyway... I absolutely loved how messy this one is. I was so shocked when someone passes away and literally gasped out loud in the truck and told my man the tea I have no choice but to give this one 5 stars
I read Cooper and Milas story and then I was hooked and had to know what happened between Harper and Kain.
I always go into motorcycle Club ( mc) books with low expectations in the romance department and high expectations on hijinx, drama and lots of cheating. This one was even more lower on the romance scale then the first book in the series.
Heres why Kain is not romantic whatsoever: 💋 He makes Harper the sidechick the moment his crazy ex ( she actually has psychotic episodes and attacks him and her pregnant srlf) cones back in the picture. Harper was his main chick.
💋 Harper is also pregnant but he forces her to keep it a secret from ' his old Lafy Ginger'.
💋 Even when Ginger is out of the picture ( she dies from her own hand) he blames Harper and tells her he'd rather Harper not been in his life and says Harper disclosing that her baby is also Jains is the real reason Ginger died ( rather then being uneducated and having a physiological disorder)
💋 Once Harper's baby is born he tells her that her baby is not his priority and doesn't want to meet her , only his son is( he meets her after coming over drunk)
💋 He never really apologizes to Harper but after she's kidnapped and forced to deal with her crazy family situation. He does tell her he has changed his mind and will change his ways.
💋 Kain tells Harper then are getting married..never proposes..never gives her a ring. Just plans a date and she has to after with it.
So on summary, don't go into Kain faith an ounce of romantic notions ..Do go in for the drama fest..there's a ton of drama. Don't go in for the groveling..there's practically none but again..cheating drama abounds.

I rate this hook 3* because I have mixed views..some may feel this is a bit unfair 1. The book is well written and detailed..I like this author. I did not not like reading this book, but I found it frustrating. 2. I don't like the main characters. Kain has Ginger, supposedly his old lady, previously was his girlfriend , had periods of leaving him for months and then returned and tells him she is pregnant. Harper has pursued Kain and been happy to be the other woman, giving sex during the knowing g hebis going home to Ginger at night. Then she gets pregnant and is on the periphery but neith of the will actually commit to walking away and staying away. 3. Ginger is bipolar but unable to medicate due to pregnancy and life around her is violent. Not a nice person until the end and she shows some contrition. 4. Harper has literally no pride and easily swayed to ignore all the past shortcomings. 5. Kain still loves her, yet turns to clubwhores to ease his frustration. 6. Harper's family situation is ridiculously contrived. Cheating, anger, hurt and hatred, blame, guilt, secrets and a lot of bluster. Difficult personalities and situations. Nothing seems to resolve, it just settles with the add on of a couple of other relationships intertwined.

Coopers book made me soo mad I didn't want to finish it but I did and I reluctantly decided to read this one and samething. Cheating. I really think this author is okay with the idea of cheating and calling it a romance. Kain cheats this whole book even a small sentence in this book suggests that after the HEA and marriage of Cooper and Milia he is cheating while she AMF the kids are at her parents. Then to make it worst the only couple in thise series I loved that author turns him into a cheater.. this isn't romance this is toxic love
Beware there are potential triggers for some people. This was another great installment for this MC. Nicola is at the top of her game. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat there are twist and turns. I cannot wait until the next book comes.

Gonna rate the entire series here cuz this one made me irate. So the books aren't terrible, but there's a lot of build up, then that gut punch thing happens, and then it's wrapped up in no time. Like how the HELL did we take all that time building up to this to just then be like ok and everyone lived happily ever after? Spoilers for all three books below.
I was super annoyed with Cooper in the first book because seriously you dump her ON your wedding day? You knew she was still showing up, and instead of doing it the night before, you let her show up and get ready to then break her heart?! And I wish Mila had more of a backbone, even though she had more than a lot of authors give these scorned women. Wish Mila would've ended up with Max.
As for book 3, I knew something was fishy about Melissa, so I wasn't surprised that it had all been a lie, but then Tanner actually does sleep with Melissa cuz the club knows something's going on with her, and Brook's ok with this; they conveniently keep Melissa's baby and live HEA.
OK so for this book, which is book 2. I couldn't stand Harper. Don't get me wrong, Kain is a douche, and as per usual neither was into the communication thing, which is how they got into the whole sh!t show they were in. If Harper they had just had an actual adult conversation when Kain said he'd leave Ginger, none of this BS would've happened. Kain allowing Ginger to abuse him and hiding it instead of getting her help, then blaming Harper was beyond gross. And his treatment of her from Ginger killing herself to the end when he just said screw it I'm gonna be with Harper, and he's like ok?! Can someone please write a woman with a backbone? After everything he did and said to her, she needed to tell him to f off and take care of his son himself, then she marries him in a couple of weeks just cuz he decides they might as well be together?! I wasn't feeling their connection at the end when they were supposedly getting their HEA. I wish they would have stuck to the truce and been adults after their time in the cabin. Would've made this much more enjoyable. Anyway, so what did I hate about Harper? Well so Mila is mad at Cooper, so she tells Harper to tell Ginger Kain has been cheating with her, and that it's his baby. Harper doesn't even do it in person but rather via text, which Kain intercepts. Then knowing Ginger has some kind of issue and is in the hospital, she decides to go visit her to say she's no longer going to go after Kain. Ummmm... OK so an almost 9 month pregnant woman went to the hospital, and you know how she feels about you, so you go to the hospital to talk to her? Were you trying to cause her more health issues?! What the F would ever possess someone to do something so stupid, and for Mila and everyone else to be like she was just going to try to be nice and to try to make Ginger feel better. FFS! And then Harper decides it's a great idea to go to Ginger's funeral when Kain clearly blames you and wants nothing to do with you. OMG! I can't! And he continues to treat her like crap, but he keeps showing up at her apartment, and she just lets him stay and takes his abuse. So annoyed!
What I liked: I liked how Harper(h) finally told off her father. I also enjoyed how Kain(H) was not living a happy life with the ow and when Cooper beat him for putting his hands on Mila, I was cheering him on.
What I didn’t like: I hated Kain and I truly didn’t believe the love he has for Harper. First, he slept with both chicks during the same time (and of course he went bare, with no discussion about going bare and STD’s) Second, he gets mad at Harper for visiting Ginger when he was the reason for her going there. Third, Harper never tells Kain that she wasn’t the one to tell Ginger it was his child she was carrying. Fourth, he doesn’t even go to the hospital while she is giving birth (hell he didn’t go to any of her appointments). No instead he screws a club chick. So I hate to say this but the H was no damn hero and Harper was a doormat.
How hot was it: 3 out 5
Details/Triggers: Cheating, suicide, and physical abuse. This story is somewhat of a continuation of the first book in the series. In the first book we know that the H got his on and off again girlfriend pregnant along with the h. In this book you see that the H picked the ow because she is suffering from mental illness and he needs to take care of her while she is pregnant. Of course, he doesn’t want anyone with the h either. Ow beats the H up and treats him horrible. He goes to the h and they have sex but says he has to be with ow. Ow makes h lose her job and H doesn’t stop it from happening. Also, h is dealing with her horrible family issues (her dad threatened h because she witnessed him cheating on her mom and he basically is living a double life). Later, ow kills herself after delivering her baby boy(unfortunately she does this after the h goes and visits her). H blames h and says horrible things to her and decides screwing other club chick is better then being there for when h delivers her baby. Doesn’t go and see the h or the baby right away. Finally, he decides he wants to be a part of the baby’s life and goes visits (H is also worried that he might be going to jail because ow told the cops that he was beating her). h gets kidnapped by dad’s girlfriend son. h finds out that mom knew all along that her husband was cheating and h finally tells her dad off. H then decides he wants the h back and they get married.
Final thoughts: This book made me want to reach in and beat the shit out of the so called “Hero”. I don’t believe in their HEA and truly believe he will be cheating on the h for the rest of their lives. I am going to read the next book because I was told that the heroine in that book as a backbone.

This is going to be a new review structure for me, but I am hoping it works well for Kain's book. Every story has three main sections. There's the beginning where the characters meet, the middle where they have lots of conflict, and the end where they ride off into the sunset. Kain's story isn't contained within his book, so I am hoping by breaking it down into these sections, I can do it justice. It may just be a story that you have to read to believe.
The Beginning:
If you want the full effect, you have to start with Cooper (Book #1). Cooper is the president of the Hammers Motorcycle Club, but when he meets Mila, it leads to one wild ride. In the background is Mila's friend, Harper. She's works the bar for the club while trying to seduce the VP, Kain.
The beginning of Kain and Harper's story floats around in the background of Cooper's book. It's a sexy game of cat and mouse. I want you. I shouldn't be with you, but I also can't avoid these feelings that are building. It eventually erupts into an inferno, until it blows up in both of their faces.
Immediately after I finished Cooper, I started to countdown the days until Kain. I knew what the beginning was, and I could guess the ending, but how do we get there? I wanted one more ride on this crazy train. On a side note: I feel the exact same way then as I do now waiting for Tanner's book.
The Middle:
I keep coming back to Nicola's books because they never follow a straight line. I don't want to sound cliche, but they always have at least one moment where you have to stop and think, "Did that really just happen?" Of all the books I have read of hers, I think Kain might have the most of those moments. Rollercoaster. Crazy Train. A wild ride. Anything you can think of to describe the highs and lows of a story, multiple it by 10. Only then will you accurately describe the middle of this book.
The End:
The road to the happy ending is paved with huge character developments. Harper has a warped sense of what a real relationship should look like. It's very easy to see where these ideas were developed, but you want to be proud of her when she breaks that cycle. Kain is in a no-win situation, but he's trying to make everyone happy and failing. He finally gets his life back on track, and you can't help but be proud of him. It's a fight till the end, but when they do get there it's well-deserved.
I love a decent story where the Hero is an asshole and cruel, but at some time I really want the dude to redeem himself, or be replaced by a Hero worthy of the heroine. Kain was a straight up prick to his baby mamma Harper, through 95% of the story. Yeah, he has an old lady who is mentally broken AF who is also pregnant, but apparently Kain forgot that it takes two to tango. He's shitty to Harper, he rejects his baby, he lets her do all of the baby stuff by herself and she has to work her ass off for everything, because even though Kain says he'll pay for the baby's stuff, he doesn't. He doesn't give a fuck about anyone but his psycho old lady. And Poor Harper, she's stupid AF too. Harper just keeps coming back to let Kain dump more hate and more shit all over her through the entire story. She's a doormat that takes it all and is happy to keep getting treated like shit. She doesn't say she believes she deserved to be shit on, but apparently she does, since she just keeps coming back and begging for more. Luckily, Kain (in between screwing more club whores) realizes he needs a built in babysitter for his new baby, so he just dumps the kid off with Harper, since she doesn't have anything better to do than babysit his other bastard child that he doesn't acknowledge as his. 🙄 And Harper is more than happy to oblige. 🙄 This story is stupid, Kain is irredeemable, and I hated this entire tale.
I will avoid this author from now on for MY mental health and well being. I have lost brain cells and my precious sleep over this toxic book. The only 1 I liked in this book was Ginger who i wish didnt die and got treatment for her mental illness ! See... this book brings out the crazy in me.
After reading the reviews I read this book so i could enjoy Kain the walking talking STD manho getting slapped, scratched , punched and assaulted by Ginger to assauge my anger from coopers book where both the manho's and stupid doormats mila and harper started their toxic relationship. This manho brings out the violence in me... usually I'm the most non violent person. I don't even like to kill a mosquito.
The zeroine Harper is no better! She let's the manho treat her like a ho, verbally abuse her and still loves him and runs after him even when he is with his gf ginger. He fucks her by day and fucks ginger at night and has best of both... he said this to harper ! He blames her for Ginger's suicide and this stupid doormat let's him walk on her with spiky boots! These 2 are the most toxic couple (who deserve each other) I have had a misfortune to read!
If I was the writer I would kill both of these toxic lying cheating creatures and let ginger live and get the treatment for her craziness, get well and live happily with her baby boy and Harper's baby. See I told ya this book brings out the crazy in me! I will be better off not reading this author ever again for MY mental health and well being!
This was a hard one to read I thought the first book was tough but no this one is! Kain is a real D ! C k and he doesn’t know what he wants cheating on Ginger with Harper and vice versa. Harper was one of my favorite characters in the first book (Cooper) she was so Feisty and even funny with a backbone didn’t stay quiet when Kain was riling her up every chance he got. I was so disappointed to read her book because I was expecting the same attitude on this one but just to find out that she lacks a backbone on her book how she’s such a doormat and kain such a d ! C k with the things he tells her for example him saying that she and her baby (his as well) are nothing to him and that the ginger and the baby he’s having with her are the only ones that matter, like W T F. It was such a rage read and it didn’t get any better I was going to give this book a 2 star but I like other books from Nicola and at the end they kind of got together again but only because ginger unalives her self.
SN: I would like to point out that this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. Happy reading!
I was really excited for Kain’s story, then as I read on, I became really unexcited😩 My nervous system is in overdrive right now because of all the crap that happened. I thought things would have went better with Harper but she really let him walk all over her, people really thought Cooper was bad? Kain is next level. The best part was him being a great father but man I was really let down coz he sounded sexy as in the last book. I understand the pressures he had, he tried to handle to Ginger sitch as best he could, I suppose this really can be taken as a real life sitch but I guess I had bigger hopes lol Though I am always a sucker for a happy ending & taking on someone else’s child is huge & highly respectable so big ups to Harper, I really am happy they worked it out coz we all knew they were in love.
And then it got worse with Tanner, man, I need a break before I start the next coz damn my heart hurts for Brook. Anyways I still love the books, I’m just butt hurt😂 also I will say Cooper got extra hot in this, I am soo happy for him & Mila. I knew he was a good guy.
Kain is quite the lady's man and has the club barmaid Harper pregnant along with his old lady Ginger. Ginger gets quite annoyed whenever she catches him looking at Harper at work or other events and lets it be known quite aggressively to Kain. Harper is also dealing with a lot in her private life and although she has a soft spot for Kain is trying to get on without him. Kain keeps trying to thrust himself into her life supplying things for their baby. She tries to reject the items he sends but, of course, he won't let her as he still cares deeply for her. You kind of feel sorry for Kain when Ginger lets her feelings unleash on Kain but you can also see where she's coming from. I received an arc for NNBB for my honest review. Although this is an MC club it centers mainly on relationships rather than the MC life. Although this is the next book in the Splintered Heart Series you will need to read the previous book to know the back story going on with the characters in this book. There is plenty of angst, tears, cheating, along with some domestic violence so this book so it may not be the book for everyone if these are triggers for you.
OMG... This is definitely a Marmite book. I can almost see the look of horror on some of the faces as they read this. But I loved it! I know we're gonna get the haters, the "Oh but it's so not real" Guess what? It isn't!! It's a story!! I love all the angst and drama that comes with these kind of books. Would I like to meet these kind of people in real life? No I chuffing wouldn't! But if I wanted real life I can open my front door and grab it. I want to read the OTT drama, the unreal relationships, the men you love to hate.... not to mention the, at times, jellyfish women that you can hate due to no backbone. I love it all. It's nonsensical to my way of living as I'm sure it is to most. But that's what I love, a book that is so far removed from my life that I can enjoy it for that reason alone!!
3 1/2 stars After the way that the H and h's story was threading through the book Cooper, I had to read this book to see how their issues were resolved. They weren't. This was very frustrating. The H continued to cheat on both the h and the OW, lie and encouraged others to lie in their relationship and showed little to no remorse. He repeatedly hurt the h with words and actions and she stayed. Her father and mother had a bizarre marriage of threats, lies and anger. When the H gets the OW pregnant, he stays with her when she has to give up taking medication for her mental health problems. He continues to be intimate with the h during the day and the OW at night. He rejects the h and makes accusations and she takes it. No acknowledgement or self reflection on the consequences of his behaviour.
Wasn't as annoying as I anticipated. I actually like OW drama if done right. What makes it done right is when the h has a strength of character to stand for what is right and not pimp out. This h was a doormat and the H was so unfit for any relationship that took a modicum of love and respect. His big dick got him into so many selfish scenarios that you wanted to throw his ass to the curb. And then he had the gall to accuse the h of fucking things up for him. So I breezed through this one, caught the OW angst and put a check mark that I read it. What a selfish asshole he was. But he did marry her, wonder how long he would last as a one woman man. The expression, "a beta disguised as an alpha" fits him.
There is a lot going on with this book! Harper, bartender and BFF of the Hammers MC President's Ol' Lady, is in love with Kain the MC VP. This is not an easy story to read. The road to their hopefully happy ending is fraught with pitfalls and loop-di-loops. Not only is there MC drama, Harper is the "other woman" (both are pregnant!) but Harper is dealing with family lies and secrets herself. I wish Harper and Kain had just talked to each other. I know if they did, we wouldn't have this heart-wrenching book to read! Definitely heed the author's TW/CW warnings.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Kain is book two in the Splintered hearts series and man oh man these Hammers men sure know how to mess things up and try to put the blame and anyone but themselves. I highly do recommend you read the books in order cause stuff that happens in this book kind of reflects stuff from book 1. Kain wants Harper but he wants Ginger too. When both women turn up pregnant weeks apart kain does what he thinks is best push Harper away. Ginger is sick with some serious mental health issues. Ginger knows Harper is pregnant from main and she hurts her self knowing main wouldn't ever hurt her. There is so many twist and turns in the book that I give it a 5 star.
