Rasetsu #2

Rasetsu, Vol. 2

Rate this book
A Supernatural Spin-off of Yurara!

Rasetsu Hyuga works for an exorcist agency where she uses her special powers to banish evil spirits. There's a story behind the red flower mark on her chest though--it's a memento left by a powerful spirit who vowed to claim her on her 20th birthday. Unless Rasetsu can find true love by then, she is fated to become his...

Not knowing it's the solution to her curse, Yako thinks that Rasetsu's quest for a boyfriend seems frivolous. Nothing's trivial about Rasetsu's next exorcism, however, especially when she's suddenly overpowered by the emotions of the spirit!

Drat, it looks like Rasetsu is going to be paired up with Yako, who I think is a rude jerk. I like Kiryu much better, although he is pretty mysterious so who knows. I hope we learn his and the Chief's secrets eventually.

If only the dumb demon who cursed Rasetsu had a better understanding of human courtship rituals this entire saga might have been avoided. (Of course, then there would be no story, or at any rate a very different one.)

Today’s post is on Rasetsu, Vol. 2 by Chika Shiomi. It is 208 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has Rasetsu and Kuryu and it. As it is the second volume of the second series you need to have both Yurara and the first volume in this series. The intended reader is someone who likes horror manga and strong female leads. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- Not knowing it's the solution to her curse, Yako thinks that Rasetsu's quest for a boyfriend seems frivolous. Nothing's trivial about Rasetsu's next exorcism, however, especially when she's suddenly overpowered by the emotions of the spirit!

Review- The blurb for this volume is just the first story and the rest of the volume has some great character development. We see how Rasetsu got cursed by an evil spirit and how much it really does affect her. She is giving it her all to survive and search for a way to safe herself. The last story has some interesting details that I would like to see more of which is the other team member’s powers. Kuryu can summon or control spirits in a way that he has not told his teammates. It saves the day but I would like to learn more about the spiritual powers in this world and we see the ghost Yurara for the first time in this series. I am very curious about where this series is going.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

I read this book a few days ago, and I've read volume 3 as well, so I know what's going to happen next. I know I said that this review would be up last week, but I didn't have time to type up the review than.

Gore: No (just gross looking ghosts)
Magic: Yes
Romance: A bit, but kind of slow.

Action: I'm not really sure what to rate this
Pacing: 4 stars
Plot: 4 stars
Drawings/Art: 4 stars

Warning, Spoilers
(All my manga reviews contain some spoilers, it can't really be avoided, but it's not too bad, that you would not enjoy reading the book if you read my reviews. There are some things that happen, that I don't mention.

Rasetsu is doing that typical flower thing that many girls do in books and tv, I don't remember what it's called, except that she says, "I will get a boyfriend! Will Not!..." When she gets, "I will," she gets so excited. Yako says it's for kids, and she just gets mad at him. Yako doesn't understand why she's taking this whole boyfriend thing so seriously, he doesn't know that finding her true love is the solution to her problem.
Then there's another client. The chief warns Rasetsu that this ghost will be a tough one for her. When they get there, they don't sense an evil sprit, so Rasetsu doesn't understand why the chief thought that this ghost would be difficult, but Kuryu tells her to be careful, she doesn't listen and we find out why chief warned her. Even though Rasetsu acts like she's not worried about what will happen in two years, she shows that she's still pretty scared, in this chapter, and Yako shows one of those rare moments where he's sweet, he says, "When that day comes... I'll be there for you." He can be so comforting and sweet sometimes. Apparently Kuryu didn't see this, he was in another room. She purifies the ghost and the kid moves on.

In the next chapter, Aoi asks Kuryu why he doesn't have a girlfriend. Then he starts talking about Kuryu's voice. Then Rasetsu gives them a bunch of photos that were sent by a client to be examined. Kuryu decides to test his voice power on Rasetsu. It affects her so much that she falls and lands in a sitting position. Of course she gets mad. It seems like Kuryu and Aoi are either oblivious to Rasetsu's reaction or they ignore it. Then Kuryu decides to try it on Yako, it works and he's so excited. We learn about when Kuryu met Rasetsu two years ago. Rasetsu used to get scared really easily because of the whole evil ghost attack thing that happened when she was 15. She was scared of Kuryu back then, she would always hide behind the chief or Aoi. She was like a stray cat back then, as Yako said. I like how she is now, although sometimes she's mean to Kuryu, and I think that's a bit too much. It's not his fault that he can't be much help. Kuryu messes with Rasetsu again with his power, lol.

In the next chapter, I'm guessing that a day went by. Rasetsu's flirting with two guys and she tells them about her curse (which is so stupid, only an idiot would tell random people something like that), they get scared and run away. Then Kuryu and Yako join her.

A little while later, she's eating cake, apparently she already had 20 pieces and they were all chocolate with extra sugar. While Kuryu is amazed, Yako is grossed out. After all this time, they're still not used to Rasetsu's crazy appetite. She wants more even after all that. Yako's pretty stressed out because he's been doing so much work lately, so Rasetsu suggests that they all go to the amusement park, but Yako doesn't want to until the chief says that there was a ghost spotted there by many people. He's going as well. Yako thinks that the ghost is really strong because the chief is tagging along, but apparently that's not the case. Yako's being such a workaholic, while evryone else wants to enjoy themselves. The rest of this chapter focuses on Kuryu and Rasetsu trying to get Yako to relax, and then they get rid of the ghost that's been haunting the place.

In the next chapter, Rasetsu's having a nightmare, which is what happened to her three years ago with that evil ghost. What she does when she wakes up is hilarious. Then Rasetsu and Yako are teasing each other and it seems like Yako enjoys it this time, while Rasetsu's blushing.

Their next client's son is possessed by a ghost, plus the whole house is haunted. Yako senses the source of where all the evil ghosts are coming from. There are even too many ghosts for Rasetsu to vanquish. She came prepared, the chief gave her some sweets, it's kind of funny what they are. She sits down to eat, while the client is confused, Kuryu explains to her that this is necessary for the job. After she's done, she angers the ghost in order to make it leave the body that it was possessing. Then stuff happens taht doesn't happen typically in their cases. Kuryu does something that proves that he's stronger than he lets on, and Yako realizes this. I'm still confused about Rasetsu and the ghost that looks like her.

This volume ends with Rasetsu bandaging Yako's injuries, and Rasetsu saying that she'll be able to sleep well tonight, because of him.

As I said in my review of volume 1 and probably some other reviews (The Chicagoland Vampires: Book 1 Some Girls Bite), that I love characters eating like crazy, like Rasetsu ate 20 slices of cake in this volume. Even though I've seen the crazy eating in many animes, mangas, novels, and other tv shows, I still think it's really funny.

It's amazing that Rasetsu changed so much since she was sixteen. She's definitely no pushover or passive, and she's funny and strong too. Again, I love her obsession with sweets, it's hilarious, and I love chocolate too.

Overall, I like this manga so far, it's funny, has great and quirky characters, and the plot is pretty interesting.

2020 Read #32

Reread in 2020

Still a good paranormal series with great atmosphere and a touch of romance. I never read through the whole series, but I have suspicions about who Kuryu really is...

Just as fun and quirky a read as the first one. Still losing a star for doing grown men with a teenage girl love triangle, but otherwise good

In the second volume bit becomes ever more evident that Kuryu is only working with the agency to be closer to Rasetsu and to make sure she doesn't get hurt - everyone else had better watch out for themselves. He even experiments with his kotodama power to tell Rasetsu exactly how he feels, she really is moved by it, too - but thinks he's just making fun of her: the age difference has her treat him much more like a big brother.

Yako learns that Rasetsu will probably get taken by a demon when she's 20, she still hasn't told him that she can get out of this if she finds true love (I always thought that simply means one has to fall in love completely, but in this context it means the other person must ALSO totally fall in love with Rasetsu - much tougher).

While the jobs remain episodic, Shiomi really knows how to make her heroine find parallels to her own story with the ghosts or how to make her heroes see and show new facets of themselves and Rasetsu, so the episodic nature is not really a disturbance. Even the comic relief episode of the agency at the amusement park gets effectively used to make Rasetsu and Yako become closer. He manages to tell her more clearly that he likes her as she is, and Rasetsu feels the first stirrings of a possibility that she might fall for Yako. So cute ^^ - the artwork is just as nicely judged as in the first volume.

That the next chapter starts with an extended flashback of how Rasetsu got her curse, makes for a really disturbing change. Rasetsu is more aware of her soft spot towards Yako than ever. He remains completely oblivious.

Certain measures that Kuryu uses to take care of the ghost in that chapter confirm my belief that I know what this secret is. I hope I'm right ^^.

Trigger warning: The demon's assault on 15-year-old Rasetsu has always had a very clear subtext of sexual assault, but it becomes even more direct in V2 when we get a longer flashback. The staging is very much as rape.

Also, in some ways Rasetsu reminds me of Veronica Mars. Though we haven't gotten enough pre-assault Rasetsu to be sure of how severely her affect changed.

I think one of the elements I will continue to like in later volumes of this series are the humorous situations. The first volume had it and now this one too. I'm referring to the chapter in which Kuryu uses his kotodama experimentally. Also, got to see some much coveted backstory. It makes me wonder about Kuryu. Anyway, I liked volume two of Rasetsu and will be getting vol. three.
