The battle between Luffy and CP9 agent Rob Lucci escalates while the rest of the crew tries to escape to safety through the Gates of Justice. Suddenly, a fleet of warships sent by the Navy Headquarters arrives on the scene and begins bombarding the island. Will the crew get away before the island is blown to smithereens?!
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

I've been reading One Piece since 2007. Rushing for every new chapter as soon as they popped out on the internet, grabbing every volume as they show up in the stores where I live, talking about it with friends and family, reading internet theories, immersing myself into the setting and the characters, laughing and crying and raging, and looking forward to the future and the ever-nearing end. I've known it longer than all the real-life friends I have. It has its highs and its lows, but at the end of the day there's no other story I've gotten into as much as One Piece.
I'm prefacing the review with all this stuff so that you know, when I say this one volume is the peak One Piece, the best it's ever been, you know I mean what I say.
There's Robin's final rescue and the ensuing cathartic comeuppance and, most importantly, her heartfelt thanks to those that came to her rescue, and - hilariously - Luffy just brushing it off with a "Don't mention it". And speaking of Luffy, there's a great final battle with a new special technique and a big endurance contest and, again most importantly, being pep-talked back up by a friend that wasn't even supposed to be there, with a great and memorable speech, a heartfelt reminder of just what he's fighting for in the first place. And then they all need to get the hell out of here, only possible by Sanji's trickery and guile and the surprise appearance of another ally, another crew member that wasn't supposed to be there - and the one time in the story, one of the few times anywhere period, that I always cry at. Then the cry for victory, the reaffirmation that they basically went on against the world and triumphed, and one final somber moment in a lightly falling snow, complete with flashbacks.
Other parts of the story have their own highs - a few of the highs possibly higher than some here - but none are as tightly packed with great and iconic moments, none so crystal-clear condense just what the story is about and why so many of us love to read it. This one volume is the absolute peak. Its mere existence bumps the rest of the volumes down to four and a half stars, at best, because if they were five-starers then this one would go above the scale, and we can't have that.
Okay you have a list of chores to get done before you can sit down, and read this volume. 1.Go to the bathroom. 2.Get a snack and drink. 3.Get a box of Kleenex. 4.Make sure you have optimal concentration. 5.Make sure you are alone.
No you effing perverts not that...
I'm talking about something as dramatic as this...
First you have a lot of "Hell yeah!" moments at the very beginning. Get ready to cry because... (and I'm warning you now this is a spoiler! Don't read the spoiler if you don't want it ruined!)
So much love to all of you my friends, shizuku["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

One Piece, Vol. 44 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (420–430) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon finally concludes the Enies Lobby Arc. As the battle between Monkey D. Luffy and Rob Lucci rages on, the destruction of Enies Lobby commences. The members of Galley-La and the "Franky Family" evacuate as the government employees have done, and the Straw Hats secure an escape route to use after Lucci's defeat.
However, once Luffy wins, Enies Lobby's destroyers unite in their efforts to finish off the crew that beat Cipher Pol 9. Just when they lose their last piece of refuge, the Straw Hats are able to escape on the Going Merry, it having come to save them in their time of need.
The crew joins with Galley-La and the Frankies and returns to Water Seven. However, the Going Merry begins to break down during the trip – beyond repair, so with heavy hearts the crew says goodbye to the vessel and gives it a Viking funeral.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. It finally concludes the Enies Lobby Arc, which lasted for fifty-six chapters over six tankōbon. Many keypoints are revealed in this storyline as Nico Robin rejoins the Straw Hat Pirates and several power-ups for the crew are introduced as they fought Cipher Pol 9. Furthermore, Roronoa Zoro loses one of his swords and surprisingly the Going Merry sinks.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 44 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
I'm very conflicted about this volume. One one hand the fight between Luffy and Rob Lucci just might be the best in this entire series. HOWEVER, I think I'm in the minority here when I say I hate the ship's farewell scene. I thought it packed so much more of a punch when it was literally just a ship. But now it's actually talking to them? It has a soul? I'm sorry, but I really didn't like that. It would've hit way harder for me if it was literally just a ship, but each member had their own reasons for being attached to it. Such a missed opportunity. Now it makes the conflict between Luffy and Usopp seem useless. It just makes Luffy outright wrong now, when before you could understand where both of them were coming from. I thought giving the ship an actual personality was a silly way to wrap up that arc.
Still cried for this devastating part everytime! Merry Go!!! We will always miss you!! Ahhhhhh!! This volume reminded me how much I love all of the strawhat crew! They are the best pirate crew ever! Their relationship, friendship, determination and fate! I love them! They are my favourite ensembles of all time! I literally scream when I saw Merry was there to fetch them, and the battle was really great! 5 stars!!!!
ENIES LOBBY ARC - FINAL PART 1. spandam's downfall is that he yaps too heckin much. he could have hauled robin up to the gates of justice way earlier if he didn't stop so often to try to make her understand her life is worthless, which it isn't, but if he wasn't so insecure and arrogant about having his world view denied by some 'random', then he could have had her delivered to the prison way earlier (i hate spandam, but i like funkfreed. he's a cute elephant)
2. SOGEKINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG - his sniping and hearing abilities are unmatched
3. how is the order "shoot her dead enough that she's still alive" and there's TWENTY PEOPLE pulling up a rifle and shooting SEVERAL ROUNDS???? how is this "keeping her alive"???
4. gear third reminds me of when ninjas bite their thumb to use blood for their jutsus in naruto - but okay, gear second is the blood pumping enhancing his body and fueling him even more (repercussion: (extreme) lethargy after the fight), gear third is the giant's fist, with bone that gets blown up like a balloon (repercussion: slow but strong movement during the fight, shrinking after the fight). i'm looking forward to exploring the other gears!!!
5. though one has to commend the marine in one thing; they are unscrupulous as well as extremely dedicated. the buster call is given for ENIES LOBBY, a high ranking judicial island, and they immediately get into action without thinking twice about it, without questioning, without a shadow of a doubt. it's pretty insane loyalty, though i do appreciate that simple soldiers are shown who do question it, who ask if justice is supposed to be that way, who fear death, who selfishly run to save their lives. i like the juxtaposition of authority and commitment to the 'cause' and the simple morality of an everyday man's of right and wrong/damning that commitment
6. all of these people's stamina must be insane, because they're running NON-STOP (in skyrim terms: 1000 stamina at level 90)
7. why would mermaids not exist, if there's fishmen? if there's giants? if there's neptunian giant monsters? i feel like mermaids would REALLY not be that far off, especially for people to believe who have seen all sorts of things
8. zoro lost yubashiri, one of the 50 skillful swords. i wonder what type of sword he will get next
9. what is the reach of robin's abilities?
10. the merry go. a beautiful and painful ending to this arc
A thousand stars if I could. I have watched the anime MULTIPLE times. I am extremely familiar with the whole story. I will literally sob like a child (and I mean literally wailing, tears streaming down, runny nose, screamining-crying) everytime they have to say goodbye to the Merry. It's incredibly touching. Thank you, Merry, for everything you've done for us. It is time to let you rest. You'll always be part of the crew.
Releer este manga está siendo una montaña rusa, pero a este tomo le voy a dar las cinco estrellas por todas las cosas bonitas y emotivas que cristalizan aquí, juntándose en un gran final para el arco de Enies Lobby.
As the Shonen Jump motto has it, "Friendship, Effort, Victory" - and One Piece has never lived up to that so hard. The Water Seven saga comes to a climax and the past ten or so volumes' worth of plots - Robin's capture, Usopp and Luffy's split, the CP9 fight, and the damaged Going Merry - all get enormously satisfying payoffs. This kind of thing is why people read One Piece. The final chapters, focusing on the Going Merry, are doused in sentiment, but the peak moment for me involves Luffy and the end of the "Sniper King" plot - it's Oda at his best, taking what's been an absurd running joke for several volumes and suddenly revealing it as the pivotal factor in the final battle. Glorious work.
After almost ten years I came back to this story. I remember that it was moving, touching and I was sad. Though now, the funeral scene completely broke and shattered me. Damn, that is some great stuff.
Overall this volume is amazing. So many memorable scenes and the emotions are even enhanced because I know what happens and can just enjoy it for what it is. This is so perfect it made me order the third box set. Yay,
10 Marine warships arrived at Enies Lobby. Buster Call is started. Straw Hat Pirates is fighting against the Marine at the Bridge of Hesitation. Zoro lost his Yubashiri.
The battle between Luffy and Rob Lucci is still ongoing. Luffy used Gear Third to fight Rob Lucci. After a fierce battle, Rob Lucci is defeated. The whole CP9 is defeated.
Sanji close the Gate of Justice. Going Merry arrived to save Straw Hat Pirates. They managed to escape from Enies Lobby. the remaining Galley-La Company anf Franky Family were escaped using sea train.
Going Merry reached its limits. It is a time to say goodbye. Straw Hat Pirates say a goodbye by to Going Merry 😭
Going Merry is one of Straw Hat Pirates' nakama. Goodbye Merry!
Enies Lobby Arc concludes. A lot has happened but damn... nothing compared to the touching funeral scene. This is the first time we say goodbye to a crew member and a true Nakama. Goodbye Going Merry.

The fight continues and in one of the greatest moments ever when it seems all will go down, Luffy's fight with Lucci goes another level, he tries it all but cant take him out and he uses everything and even those strange new moves but when he hears the call of his friends one last time, he has to give it his everything and he defeats Lucci and like this fight has to be one of the best ever and then Luffy declares that robin is rescued and she cried finding her real nakama and that was an emotional moment but such a cool one, and Luffy is the greatest ever. But since the marines have them surrounded and then comes Going merry and rescues them and how they get out of there is just amazing and how it happened is explained but Merry breaks down and we have a funeral for merry which is the saddest ever, it was their ship and it went into so much adventures with them. The funeral scene with the crew was so sad and just wow. The water 7 saga easily one of the best arcs in one piece ends here. Oda takes the book to a whole new level with this arc.
