The Straw Hats have infiltrated the Tower of Law to save Robin, but they still need a special key to release her. One of the CP9 assassins holds the right key, but Luffy and his crew may have to defeat them all. Can the Straw Hats thwart CP9 and rescue Robin?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

The Water Seven / Enies Lobby arc has definitely been my favourite so far. Rob Lucci is a fantastic villain and it's the first arc where I've felt that the stakes are truly high!
Even though Oda has a tendency to make his main baddy's supposedly scary sidekicks a bunch of silly dumbasses, this arc is still pure adrenaline and fun action. It is the definition of a page-turner. There are many reasons why this saga is a classic. I do wish Oda made more use of Rob Lucci, though. He's so damn cool.
Again, I make notes on manga, not so much review them. This is just to help me remember what things happened in which volume.
Gods. The war begins.
- Firstly, though, as usual, I enjoy the chapter covers. So far, the last few covers and then-some have detailed the adventures of Baroque Works and where the numbered agents have gone. I love the showing of Crocodile, since, to date, he's still one of my favorite villains.
- The Puffing Tom smashes into the Tower of Law, and the Mugiwaras all make their way in, meeting up with a freed Franky (who burns the Pluton blueprints a volume before).
- Fukuro unravels to the pirates that Robin's powers are suppressed by kairouseki handcuffs, which can only be opened by one of the keys a CP9 member is holding. So the Mugiwaras all split to look for these five keys.
- Hilarity abounds when Zoro and Usopp manage to handcuff each other with kairouseki, thereby screwing themselves over, considering they now have to face both Kaku and Jabra and their Devil's Fruit abilities. Zoro's ideas and reactions always make me laugh. And Usopp is no better (the bit with the rooster almost made me bust a gullet).
- Sanji clearly is screwed over by the fact that he manages to make it to Kalifa first. Yeah, that wasn't going to end well.
- Nami manages to steal the key from Kumadori with minimal harm--thanks to Chopper, who manages to strike a few hits on Kumadori as the two escape. After encountering a defeated Sanji, however, it's clear who the person fighting Kalifa is.
- That said, Kalifa and Nami is just going to end up being one heck of a fan service fight. Just saying.
- Franky's fight against Fukuro is one of the first to finish, with the help of Chopper and three bottles of cola. Yasai punch is still one of my favorite Franky attacks.
- Chopper's fight with Kumadori wasn't going too well until Chopper decided to overdose on Rumble Balls. Yeah, three times is not the charm, but it got the job done.
- Now, the problem is how to stop a rampaging, drugged up Chopper. But that's something to solve for next volume.
- Meanwhile, Luffy barrels through to look for Robin. The problem is that this man tries to sail toward the Gates of Justice. Which is clearly dumb. Thankfully, Chimney leads Luffy in the right direction, and we see a bit of Gear Third.
- Spandam starts to soil his britches. And Luffy encounters Lucci.
One Piece, Vol. 42 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (400–409) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon continues the Enies Lobby Arc. The Straw Hats and Cutty "Franky" Flam break off and engage Cipher Pol 9 (CP9) in battle. Initially, they are unsuited for the original pairings, the crew exchanges opponents to improve their chances of victory, allowing two members of CP9 to be defeated.
Meanwhile, Monkey D. Luffy follows Nico Robin's captors, CP9 leader Spandam and CP9's strongest member Rob Lucci. Lucci fights Luffy in order to give Spandam time to take Robin to the government's inescapable prisons. Instead, while trying to call for help, Spandam accidentally triggers the destruction of the Straw Hats by summoning the World Government to destroy Enies Lobby and whoever is on it.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. It continues the Enies Lobby Arc as the fight between the Straw Hat Pirates and the Cipher Pol 9 intensifies. For the most part, it was written and constructed rather well. This tankōbon is filled with fights and moves the narrative forward swiftly as the Straw Hat Pirates seemingly have the upper hand, until Rob Lucci, second-in-command of CP9, accidently summoning the World Government to destroy Enies Lobby and everyone on it.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 42 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
Got a lot of catharsis and insecurities dealt away in the previous volume, with Robin's flashback and traumas being laid bare and her finally consenting to be rescued. While that's still going on and the stakes are high on the background, we have room to set it aside for a bit in favour of comic relief - gags, jokes, japes, and general levity. Mistakes are made. Kaku makes a clown out of himself, Zoro has to improvise his sword-style with being stuck with Sogeking, classic nutshots with Sanji, Luffy having trouble following through and getting to hilariously hype up Gear Third, Spandam being the little twit he always was, and the most serious of the lot - Rob Lucci - being out of focus for a little while. Franky and Fukuro's bout is just funny from start to finish...
...but little by little things get more serious. Chopper's fight with Kumadori starts funny, but gets pretty painful to watch after a bit and culminates to a plain terrifying new power. Kalifa toys around with Nami for a while for some reason, experiments with her new ability, when she could end the fight with a few good kicks right away. Luffy catches up with Lucci and starts the most tense and humorless fight of the lot, with the most grim and dangerous main obstacle to rescuing Robin... who for her part approaches ever closer to her doom. And then the ominous and scary cliffhanger as Buster Call is issued.
And a couple more great jokes on top of how exactly that happens, just to make sure things never get quite too dark.
It's another one of those transitiory novels, with little plot progress in itself, just fights. But they're good, funny fights. No complaints.
Aunque yo siempre he contado a Water seven junto con enies lobby.

this is taking freaking forever. i'm literally skimming these fights. anyway, edlritch horror chopper is pretty cool. also pretty funny that lewser pulled an iron giant, when the guy accidentally sends he nuke to the town??? lmaooooooooo nice one.
ENIES LOBBY ARC - PART 3 1. i'm pretty sure that fukurou can be tricked into giving the key without fighting 2. once again, i'm being flashed by how ridiculous some devil fruits are. a giraffe? the SOAP SOAP power? that being said: i expected a proper chemical explanation about why her bubbles zap the strength from people. my theory was tensides, but :( that didn't happen (which isn't bad!! i just have fun with physical explanations :3)
3. how many models of the dog dog fruit are there? how many models of the ox ox fruit/bovines are there?
4. why does nami always have to fight against the women?
5. how fast does the acceleration have to be that you can escape vertically from a stream of water? (franky vs. fukurou)
6. how many gears does luffy have? is it like guy sensei's gears?? i need to know all levels and all specific abilities and repercussions
THE FIGHTS ARE HAPPENING. i love all the match ups. zoro and sniperking vs wolf dude and giraffe man. nami and kalifa. chopper vs lion dude. ITS ALL SO GOOD. also franky and all of his drinks?? i need to see him try every single drink to see how he changes. UGH. I LOVE WHEN THEY ALL HAVE SOMEONE TO FIGHT AND SHOW THEIR SKILLS
—— Has anyone notice that it’s in this volume that Chopper’s original design is gradually changing to a more big-headed kawaii version? (SIGH) I don’t like it. 😭
There were so many parts of this volume that deserve 6 stars; the buster call and triple Rumble chopper. But the pacing did feel quite slow in the first few chapters and some of the fights felt repetitive as they all played out at the same time and it did start to feel like they were dragging on. I did love the 5 key idea but there was just a bit too much goof for me to give this chapter 5 stars.

a lot of battles in this one as the crew and cp9 agents start fighting each other at last. i think there's a good balance between funny moments and some more serious revelations (like what's happening with chopper). and we're finally getting luffy vs. lucci! let's go luffy, beat the pigeon guy up!
Battle between Straw Hat Pirates and CP9 begins: - Zoro and Sogeking vs Kaku and Jabra - Sanji vs Kalifa - Sanji lost - Nami vs Kumadori - Chopper saves Nami - Nami vs Kalifa - Chopper vs Kumadori - Franky vs Fukuro - Luffy vs Rob Lucci
Chopper used his third rumble ball and get into Monster Point.
Spandam accidentally triggered a Buster Call. Marine warships are on its way to Enies Lobby.
