Luffy and crewmate Usopp try hard to find a way to repair the Merry Go, but after Usopp is attacked and the money they had saved to repair the ship is stolen, Luffy must make the most difficult decision as a captain yet. What will become of their beloved ship? And where did Robin disappear to...?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Unpopular opinion: I never liked Usopp going against Luffy for the Merri. I understand his feelings, but he never even stopped to consider that Luffy and the others were feeling the same
This is probably the single best One Piece volume to date. It's got such emotional stakes that no other part of the story till now - perhaps ever - can match: two characters that we've gotten to know throughout the entire story come to blows, in a believable and realistic manner where you can absolutely see both points of view and kind of agree with both and could likely not think of a way to reconcile them yourself. It's been a long time coming and set up very well in the preceding volumes, and it leads to Usopp the coward's finest and bravest moment, against one friend for the sake of another, followed by some misery and grief that's only the beginning.
Not trying to knock on some of the recent arcs and stories, which are all great, but in my mind, Water 7 and Enies Lobby still rule supreme.
One Piece, Vol. 35 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (328–336) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon continues the Water Seven Arc. Monkey D. Luffy reluctantly decides to abandon the ship. Usopp, having grown attached to the Going Merry, is unwilling to take this course of action and challenges Luffy's captaincy. Once defeated, Usopp decides to leave the Straw Hats, and the others go searching for a new ship.
Meanwhile, the Aqua Laguna, an annual storm that strikes Water Seven, is about to return. To coincide with this Iceburg, the owner of Galley-La, is attacked, and Nico Robin is labeled as the prime suspect. Knowing Robin is a member of the Straw Hats, all of Water Seven turns against them.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. The Going Merry, the ship of the Straw Hat Pirates, is badly damaged that Monkey D. Luffy reluctantly decides to abandon her. Predictably, since the ship was from his childhood friend and possible love Kaya, Usopp is reluctant to leave her behind and challenges and loses the captaincy and decides to part ways with the Straw Hat Pirates – a first in the series.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 35 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
This arc is so painful. First because of the Merry. And due to the tensions in the crew. I do think Luffy handles it as best as he can. But it hurts to read anyway.
Usopp's character is a centerpiece to this story arc as his whole existence is put into question following mistakes and failures that he can barely live with. This leads to him being overly dramatic and giving himself the ultimatum that he so desired. The end builds up to an epic battle with Franky finally showing up and a third party intervening.
Usopp is such a darling and lovable character. He tries so hard and loves his nakama so much. Who can't relate his story here of not feeling worthy and being afraid to face them after being beaten?
Obviously Merry is special to the entire crew, but she holds special meaning to Usopp, in particular, since she did come from his village and was gifted to them from Kaya. If anything hurts more than watching the fight between Luffy and Usopp, it's definitely Merry crying about it at the end of chapter 332.
Wow! The best One Piece volume yet! This one was very emotional and I straight up cried through the middle of this. Fantastic character work and the Straw Hats have my whole heart. I love this series sm!!
Finally some real tension in the straw hat crew!! It can’t be all rainbows and friendship all the time- a break from the pact was bound to happen and it makes sense it would be Usopp over Luffy’s decision to abandon the Merry Go ship. Their confrontation and the 1v1 match that followed is all that I hope to see happen more in One Piece. Give me dramaaaaa ~~~~ 🙂↕️
I did take one star off because I’m a lil iffy about Franky. The outright flamboyant characters always bother me loool ☠️
WATER 7 ARC - PART 2 1. how do pirates smell like? (beside the obvious sweat and dirt)
2. it was about time that there is infighting. i've been waiting for it, because i thought it to be almost too good to be true that there hasn't been huge arguments yet, because with a crew like that, there are bound to be some kind of ideals that will clash. quarrels like zoro and sanji obviously don't count, because they're just that - quarrels. while i do agree that there couldn't have been another way but to duke it out between usopp and luffy, it didn't have to start out with a bang. usopp mourning the money he's lost, and then luffy starting the topic of the merry go with 'i decided i'm gonna get a new ship' rather than first explain what the shipwright people said about the merry being unsalvageable really set the tone, and immediately gave usopp the impression that he didn't care about the merry go, when that's not what actually happened. luffy didn't decide that on a whim, but the way he started the conversation sounded like it. but usopp's insecurity also hindered him in seeing further to the actual point luffy is trying to make, because whatever reason he's telling luffy, it all goes back to him tying his worth to the merry go: it's the ship he's had a hand in getting for them, he's been the one working on her. if they get a new ship, they effectively would 'throw him away too'. his kind of thinking that something broken is still worth something having and fighting for (himself basically). and also usopp's mega antagonising luffy and his decision and projecting his insecurity on him and luffy obviously feels cornered about a decision so huge and also he's somewhat of a hothead, sooooo i mean i get why a fight broke out.
3. (i still don't believe the merry go isn't salvageable, btw)
4. i love the way the battle went between usopp and luffy. usopp is not stupid, and the way he fights is especially by confusing his enemies and rendering them not being able to expect what's happening next. you'd never think somebody is using hot tabasco sauce during a fight and actually trying to hinder you by making you have to deal with either shitty smells or spicy stuff. also, there's so many ways people can take punches and still continue on, but there's also many ways to put the body in sensory overload, which greatly confuses the body in such a situation. and i like that oda put that in, and i also like that luffy basically won with one fat punch that ended all. in any way, somehow each chapter leaves me with a heavier heart than before.
5. if i had a transponder snail, i'd dress them up so cutely :>
6. will franky always do some contemporary dance and also interpretative dancing while talking?

(massive spoilers) This was a good volume, we continue with Luffy rescuing Usopp from the franky family and in a great bit of payback..he, zoro, sanji, chopper fight them to gain revenger for usopp and defeat them and its so cool, the art shines there and then we have Usopp recovering, Luffy says they will have to abandom "Going merry" ship, Usopp-Luffy fight over it and in one of the greatest moments of one piece, its their friendship on the line and the battle is emotional like anything but Luffy wins. Meanwhile Iceberg is attacked and so the suspicion is Robin with some masked guy and so its Carpenters vs Luffy while he is fighting Franky (whose a cyborg) and the battle is epic. There were some good moments in the volume like usopp-luffy fight and those memories they had and Usopp wondering what too do next, Franky fighting Luffy and he is entertaining like anything and the art and colors here were just fire and some of the best ever. Oda is bringing the stakes and emotions to another level with this volume!
