Someone has tried to take the life of Iceberg, mayor of Water Seven, and he's blaming Robin for the deed. But Robin has disappeared and left the Straw Hats under a cloud of suspicion! Now the crew members are on the run, looking for a way to clear their names. Could a mysterious group known as CP9 be to blame? Or is Robin really guilty?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

One Piece, Vol. 36 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (337–346) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon continues the Water Seven Arc. The Straw Hats are on the run and Nico Robin is nowhere to be found. In order to determine where her allegiances lie, the Straw Hats decide to break into Galley-La's headquarters to find her. To their surprise, they are not the only ones laying siege to Galley-La – a masked group has already infiltrated the headquarters looking for the blueprints to the ancient weapon Pluton.
After finding the blueprints and discovering that they are counterfeit, the masked individuals approach the recovering Iceburg. They remove their disguises, revealing themselves as Robin and some of the workers of Galley-La. As members of the secret government organization, Cipher Pol #9, they joined Galley-La to gain Pluton for the government's use. After speaking with Iceberg, they learn that the real blueprints are with Franky, a shipwright and friend of Iceberg.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. It gives more back story to Nico Robin, who has a rather tragic past and introduces the Cipher Pol – a series of secret agencies who do investigations, assassinations and espionage for the World Government.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 36 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
Lots of new info revealed in this volume. It's hard to get your bearings when this happens. While waiting for the log pose to sort itself, there are some classic Oda gags and surprising reveals to keep the reader distracted.
This volume is all over the place tone-wise, as well. One Piece has always been a little "madcap," so that tracks. Overall, there's plenty of excitement in the wake of the cliffhanger.
Can't ask for much else than a feeling of wanting to dive right into the next volume.
I don't believe the Straw Hats have ever been in such a bind. A great enemy looming in the shadows, that enemy pinning its terrible crimes on the main characters, an enormous tidal wave about to strike the whole island... that's all just par the course, but now the crew itself is fracturing. Some have split up, others are betraying them outright. And she's not the only traitor around.
More subtly, there are a couple good scenes setting up Franky as well. One single panel of him leaving the bar, a determined expression on his face, was about when I figured he'd be the one joining the Straw Hats as the new shipwright. Even before the initial forerunner - Kaku - dropped out and the big reveal showed up.
Really feels like Paulie should absolutely not have said that the blueprints were fake, though. It just led them to try even harder and finally uncover the truth. Could've just let them take the fakery away and get egg on their faces.
This vol was just full of twists and turns. The ones who want to assassinate Water 7's Mayer is CP9, a secret group who works for the government that should not exist! And indeed, Robin is working with them, despite the government having been after her. Apparently they are looking to revive the power of ancient and powerful weapon to end the pirate age. And the only person capable of doing this is Robin because she is the only one who can read the ancient history.
Is is quite exciting to see just how involved the government is in OP. Despite seeming to be ruled under one world government, it is quite clear that the government is corrupt. Thus far, this is the impression I have gotten from them.
The vol ended in a cliffhanger with Luffy breaking into the room where the CP9 are located! Will be exciting to see Robin and Luffy's confrontation!

WATER 7 ARC - PART 3 1. franky refuels on cola? what an interesting machine...
2. why is robin able to decode ponegliffs?
3. BETRAYAL. i have no words, man. what a beautiful plot twist, i did NOT see this shit coming, i am genuinely like so electrified, the writing is beyond superb. there's so much information and so much lore to this world--
BRO. THAT TWIST??? LOWKEY STILL HURTS EVEN THO I KNEW IT THIS TIME. just… WOW MAN. also iceburg LOVE YOU KING AND PAULIE also luffy getting stuck and all of meeting up it’s MWAH.
Holy shit this arc is just bloody brilliant with heart breaking fights between friends, betrayal, conspiracy and all the twist and turns in the world. This arc was best one so far. I love how each character evolves beautifully in their own way that isn't superficial. Feels!!!! I just hope everything turns out fine.
While it was never bad, this is the first volume where I felt One Piece was actually living up to its hype. If I hadn't already purchased all of these, I'd probably have stopped reading 30 volumes ago.
Status : still crying. I like how it feels like a ton of storylines collided here. It doesn't feel forced and it's not confusing. It just feel really actioned packed and well plotted.
Continuemos 🤭

(Yeah, these reviews are basically just for you now, Al)
Holy shit though, I cannot believe the leap in quality the series has made these last two volumes. One Piece’s sprawling world is suddenly jumped to life with electric writing, ambitious plotting, and twists that actually land!!! Some really interesting story manoeuvres here that make the stakes feel more knotty than ever before, and I actually want to know what happens next instead of just reading out of semi-obligation!
Who knew Oda had this kind of juice???!*
*to the randos on goodreads - I’m being facetious. Obviously loads of people knew this.

337: Protectors of the City of Water 338: Coup de Vent 339: Rumors 340: The Women Who Brings Darkness 341: Demon 342: The Messenger of Darkness 343: Cipher Pol No. 9 344: Opposing Force 345: Sleepers 346: The Ninth Justice

Finally, an arc with villains that are actually as cool as they are intimidating… the reveal was everything. I’m so intrigued and it feels like I’m reading an action packed spy novel than a sometimes comedic gag manga. 😭🖤 I just know that the next volume is going to be craaaazy.
