With his brother Ace locked up in the Naval prison Impel Down, Luffy doesn't have much time to rescue him before his imminent execution. While he may have found a way to sneak into the maximum-security prison, finding Ace isn't going to be as easy. But a chance reunion with some former enemies just might be a blessing in disguise!
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Impel Down is pure fun and adrenaline from start to finish. I love this arc so much. I will never not smile when Bon Clay is featured on panel. And Buggy has some great moments in this arc, too. Everything here is so good. And don't even get me started on Ivankov.
One Piece, Vol. 54 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (523–532) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon begins a new story arc. As a pirate working for the World Government, Boa Hancock is able to sneak Monkey D. Luffy into Impel Down – the maximum-security prison. Luffy attempts to avoid drawing attention to himself, but meeting his old nemesis, Buggy the Clown, the entire prison is alerted to his presence.
Luffy and Buggy continue through the prison's first three levels, defeating any jailers they come across. At the same time, they reunite with other pirates Luffy has met in the past, recruiting them to help find his brother, Portgas D. Ace. With Ace's execution only a few hours away, the chief warden, Magellan, sets out to stop Luffy himself.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. Monkey D. Luffy puts finding his crew on hold in favor of rescuing his brother Portgas D. Ace from the underwater prison Impel Down. With some assistance from Boa Hancock, he manages to infiltrate the facility. However, fulfilling his objective and escaping the hellish prison might be easier said than done – especially when so many prisoners recognizes him and a warden is out to get him.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 54 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Impel Down is an absolutely insane place and I have little to no idea why anyone would want to torture their prisoners so badly. Just keep them inside and out of trouble, that should do it. But it does lead us to a number of old characters making their glorious returns into the story, so that's all very well.
Buggy's dejection at his cannonballs being forgotten is one of the best gags in the story, period.
Luffy tries to rescue his brother Ace from the impregnable prison! Whelp…not until Luffy showed up! I’m consistently impressed by how endearing Luffy is through everything. And his desire to go to the depths of hell to save the people he cares about makes me really proud of this fictional character.
IMPEL DOWN ARC - PART 1 1. i'd be surprised if ace would bat an eye at being put down into boiling water - he is fire, after all.
2. i will be really honest: i would also fall in love with luffy. i CANNOT blame hancock at all.
3. buggy REALLY looks good with his hair in a ponytail. im also sad that luffy gave the bracelet to buggy, because it looked good on luffy!
4. buggy can fly so long his feet are on the ground. so why is he able to fly when luffy is just carrying them?
5. i love that garp is proud of luffy LMAOOOO it's so funny because it goes against his 'principles' of being a marine, but in the end, it's just a job to him, and not a lifestyle and luffy and ace are his grandson. he is a family man before he is a marine
An awesome volume of Luffy fighting his way down a five-level prison and, even better, he has some of his old nemeses to keep him company! Once again, mangaka Eiichiro Oda does everything in the most unpredictable and creative way. I can't wait to see some of that brother-to-brother moments that are sure to come (hopefully!!!).
For me, One Piece is best Manga ever written. The story always touch my heart, it is a combination of faithful friendship, laughter, loyalty and action. Some people might find this manga as silly and pointless (I’ve heard this before) but they never truly read the Manga and therefore judging it simply from the cover. I’ve been in that position too…and thank God I finally looked beyond the cover and found the greatest adventure any Mangaka ever written.
Impel Down is such a horrible place, where you really do not want to be. Yet it feels sort of magical and interesting place because of Oda's design and interpretation. The story is pretty straightforward with funny wardens and enemies. Yet the pressure is here and we need to hurry to save Ace! Nevertheless, the straightforward story, which is incredibly fun!
I think that around this part of the story Oda's art is amazing. It peaked definitely for me and will only get better at times. I think his lines and style for Luffy's punches and anatomy are simply stunning. Energetic and you feel the energy behind a punch or a kick. Stellar work.
I didn't remember the descent into Impel Down going that fast! I love it even though I'm aslo super sad about it. And I know Ace wouldn't want it but I love it anyway. And Garp is the best grandpa.

Bon! Me ha encantado su reencuentro con Luffy.
