It’s been two years since the vampires narrowly escaped a fiery death at the hands of the Visser brothers. With members of the band, A Gift of Death, killed and their cover blown, the vampires need a new way to thrive.
The Black Heart is their answer—a small nightclub with loud music and cheap drinks. But the night’s creatures don’t know that they’re still being hunted. John Calderon hasn’t given up the fight against the immortal killers that murdered his son. No, he’s renewed his oath to find and destroy the monsters once and for all, and nothing will stop him.
When the vampires feed a little too close to the nightclub, John is able to home in on them, sending forth a new team of professional vampire hunters.
Who will win this a grieving father and his band of mercenaries, or the blood-sucking undead?
A GIFT OF DEATH by Daniel Volpe was one of the better vampire novels I have read in the last decade. Combining metal and fangs made for a pretty gory picture you could almost headbang to.
So, when I heard there was a follow up coming in 2022, I was looking forward to it as much as I do any new Volpe story…think of it this way, it’s like a beautiful woman telling you she bought this really sexy lingerie that barely covers any of the naughty bits, and she was going to wear it at a later stage.
BLACK HEARTS AND RED TEETH picks up right where AGOD ended, and for those of you who haven’t read the first one, this limits me to what exactly I can tell you about the story without giving anything away, so my advice would be to read them in order to get the most out of it.
What I can tell you is that there are vampires and there are vampire hunters. And, as you would expect, there are victims and victims. But who will you be rooting for by the end of this one?
This is the sequel to "A Gift Of Death" and what a glorious sequel it is, this was just pure gold!
"Black Hearts and Red Teeth" is a continuation of the first book, the story continues and the vampires are still wreaking havoc and getting away with it.
There are new hunters on their tail now, will the vampires finally get their comeuppance?
I'm not a fan of vampire novels, but apparently Daniel Volpe writing them is the exception to that rule. I liked A Gift Of Death, but I liked this sequel even more. Great continuation of the first with a better storyline. Volpe's best release this year IMO.
I love vampire books and absolutely loved A Gift Of Death, but I loved this one even more. It held a vampire glamour on me from the beginning all the way to the end and I couldn’t put it down. I found myself liking the good guys and then started liking the bad guys, which to me, means the characters are so well developed that we become attached to them and start caring about what happens to them. I’m hoping for at least one more, possibly making this a trilogy because it kept me wanting more!
There aren’t many indie releases that are widely anticipated but the follow up to Daniel Volpe’s A GIFT OF DEATH is definitely one of them. He has been all over Facebook groups and finally, at the end of the year, we get his newest BLACK HEARTS AND RED TEETH!
Continuing from AGOD, Cameron and Sarin are back at it doing what they do best killing and drinking blood. I mean, they are vampires, what are they supposed to do, shimmer? When one of their victim’s parents begins the search for closure, no one will be safe and all will have to look over their shoulders to save their necks (ha, vampire joke!)
Volpe delivers a blood soaked and sex filled ride of depravity that his fans have been craving (joke #2). Including a few of the indie community’s favorite people, adds some personal touches as well as nods back to the original. He also weaves a story line with heart and gives one of them a bit more humanity, which was one of my favorite parts of the story.
While I am partial to AGOD, this was not a disappointment. 2023 is going to be interesting to watch what Volpe has in store for us.
Black Hearts and Red Teeth Daniel Volpe Sarin is back and hungrier than ever. If you haven't read a Gift of Death yet, do it! Do it. Then come back and read this gem.
“Black Hearts and Red Teeth” by Daniel Volpe gets a 4 out of 5 stars.
This is the sequel to “A Gift of Death” and begins right we’re the first story ends. It’s short and brings to light the next chapter of the vampires new lifestyle. They continued being hunted to avenge the death of one of their victims. I will say that one of the victim scenes was tough to read as it was saddening. There’s pretty of gore and lust but, overall, it was a decent sequel.

This is what I'd been waiting for! This sequel to A Gift of Death was exactly what I needed. It brought back Sarin and Cameron and gave us a glimpse into their lives and what they've been up to since AGOD. Then Volpe introduces us to a group of professional vampire killers that radiate danger. The inevitable confrontation was full of nail biting suspense, and that ending!! 5/5 undead skulls 💀
I like this one but A Gift of Death is superior. While Camerons story goes well I'd have liked more of it but we don't get that. I have mixed feelings about that and we'll see where the next one picks up I suppose, if there is more to come.

A sequel to A Gift of Death and continuation from the previous offering. Diving straight in I found myself torn between rooting for the "good" guys and rooting for the vampires. Lots to unpack in this and plenty of extreme moments as the story progresses to reach its climax. Excellent stuff!
Wow! Another Volpe classic. I honestly don’t know how he writes this stuff. It’s appalling but so easy to digest and read. Such a fresh take on vampires in twined with splatterpunk. Thanks again for your words Mr Volpe
Daniel Volpe really knows how to write a captivating and brutal story. I loved this book, Daniel proves to us that the vampire trope is not done yet! It’s gory and brutal but also has characters that connect in a meaningful and believable way.
I'm so grateful this is my first review of 2024! You don't necessarily need to have read the Gift of Death to enjoy this book, but do yourself the favor and get to know Sarin.
This was a perfect sequel. We get an amazing opening scene full of action, violence, and a measure of our two main characters. In this scene sets the tone of the book. We then get a quick recap. And when I say quick, I mean a few lines tops. Enough to trigger recognition. Mr. Volpe wastes no pages retelling the last book in this one. Thank you for that! More space for this crazy epic story.
The end has a well established pay-off. I wasn't exactly sure how I was getting there but it happened, and now I'm all set for the final book in this trilogy.
Overall, this book was fun, depraved, gorey, and unforgettable. It hit every vampire urge I was craving. There was even a moral dilemma to chew over for one of the vampires showing a range of complexity in our two bloodsuckers.
This is a fast moving book that will leave you needing more. Grab this one and its predecessor and enjoy.
I had high hopes going into this sequel, but it didn’t come close to delivering the same shock-and-awe as the first. Gone were the gore-crazed, boundary-pushing thrills, replaced by a story that felt like it was trying too hard to carry the weight of the first book. Unfortunately, instead of building on that intensity, it left the plot hanging with an open ending that felt incomplete.
What struck me most was how the tone had shifted—this didn’t feel like the same author who had penned such a visceral, gripping tale the first time around. Instead, the writing came off as juvenile, as if it had been taken over by a horny high schooler trying to mimic the edgy style of the original. It lacked the nuance and raw energy that made the first book stand out.
Ultimately, this felt like an unnecessary addition to the story. The first book could have easily stood alone, maintaining its own dark, twisted legacy. I’m sure there’s an audience for this sequel, but for me, it fell flat, leaving me wishing it had left well enough alone.
Black Hearts and Red Teeth by Daniel Volpe, the sequel to A Gift of Death was very good. This was literally a non-stop read for me! And it is one of the best vampire books I've ever read! I loved how the story developed and matured from the first part, very satisfying and I look forward to the next edition! If you like vampire novels pick this up, you won't be disappointed!
This is the sequel of a Gift of death. It was nice to be back in this wild world, and to see these vampires again.
As brutal as the first one, this sequel was bloody, full of smut, with even more vampires hunters, and other surprises.
I liked having more of Sarin's backstory, and learning about her creation. This was a fun and bloody read, and I hope we will get more of this story one day.
I was fairly disappointed in this one. It seemed like one of the main character’s personality did a 180 from the first book. And while we’re all capable of change, it didn’t seem logical.
The ending was really rushed and in the end, it felt a bit too shark jumpy for me. If there are more books in this series, I likely will not be reading them.
So thankful for 2022 when I discovered extreme horror and splatterpunk, and Daniel J. Volpe was one of the first authors from the genre that I read. I always said I was a zombie fan over vampires, but that was before I read these books.
BLACK HEARTS AND RED TEETH directly follows A GIFT OF DEATH, so you definitely need to read that one first. The gore and savagery began on page three, and with a story that is both plot and character driven, this author doesn't mess around with unnecessary filler.
The vampires narrowly escaped death at the hands of hunters in the first book, and members of their death metal band were killed and their cover was blown, so they have found a new way to thrive. They run The Black Heart, a hole in the wall club that brings in the crowds for the cheap drinks. They have no idea they're still being hunted by a grieving father who can't come to terms with the fact that the nest killed his son.
There is a character from the first book who plays a huge role in this sequel, and I would love to see another installment of this blood-soaked series. This title is available now on Kindle and in both hardcover and paperback.
