Gail's family was poor but rich in love. When her mother was in the hospital giving birth to the youngest child, their house burned. Before leaving the hospital, Gail’s mother was diagnosed with cancer.
When her mother passed, Gail and her siblings went to stay with family, eventually living at her grandmother's house. Although warned that this was not a good decision, Gail’s father felt it was his only option. However, it was nearly fatal for little Gail. Her father—her hero—saved her in the nick of time.
The Welfare Department soon removed Gail and her two younger siblings and placed them in foster homes. They were ultimately placed at Childhaven, an orphanage for fortunate children.
Despite great sadness and pain in their early years, Gail and her siblings grew up to be strong, loving, and faith-filled adults. But those early traumatic childhood events weighed on Gail’s body, mind, and spirit until she was in her forties. Finally agreeing to seek help, she started seeing a Christian counselor. That was the beginning of her healing journey.
No matter how much hurt you’ve endured, there’s always a path to healing and wholeness. In Fleecy One Woman’s Story of Surviving and Thriving after Childhood Abuse, Gail’s story is evidence of the resiliency of the human spirit, the power of love, and the never-ending mercies of a loving Father.
The author shares how she overcame childhood abuse and poverty and learned from those hardships to face other challenges in her life with a positive attitude from the strength of family, friends, and her faith in God. She writes about her close-knit family that struggled after the death of her mother from cancer. She experienced a painful time with a grandmother that ended with Gail being hospitalized from a beating. She and two siblings were sent to Childhaven, in Alabama, where they were loved and cared for. Gail lovingly recalls her parents and siblings throughout the book and how they remained close and supported one another. She credits others who stepped forward and provided emotional and spiritual support. Through it all, Gail gained the strength to help and inspire others. She doesn't sugarcoat her story. Heartfelt truth and honesty on the pages make "Fleecy Clouds" an inspirational book.
My wife, Gail Champion Barber, wrote this book. It is her story beginning with much pain as a child. Gail, a brother, Don, and a sister, Brenda, were the second family of children to live at Childhaven in Cullman, Alabama — a home for fortunate children.
We met at Freed-Hardeman in 1964 and married in 1964.
Here past began to trouble her in her forties. We were blessed with a Christian counselor, James Jones, who helped her heal.
Gail's summary: A difficult beginning didn’t ruin the remainder of my life. And it doesn’t need to ruin yours, either.
I have read the book more than ten times in its development. I highly recommend you reading it once.
I know Gail personally, and I can attest that she is indeed a remarkable woman. I am so grateful for her life story with the insight and inspiration it brings. I’ve also heard about Childhaven since early childhood. I’m so glad to see it through Gail’s eyes. This is a book well worth reading!
I got to have dinner with Gail and her husband, Jerrie, the other night. They gave me a copy of her book and I read it in two days. It’s absolutely amazing, and regardless of your faith, it will really give you a new sense of appreciation for the smallest luxuries. Her faithfulness in God despite the trauma she has endured has been such an encouragement to me.
