Haunted in Death

Rate this book
Number Twelve is an urban legend in 2060 New York City. The hot club in the 1960s, it is now reported to be haunted?and cursed. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is called there to investigate the apparent murder of Radcliff Hopkins, its new owner and the grandson of the man who made Number Twelve a cultural icon. Several bullets from a banned gun end his dream of returning the building to its former glory. With everyone around her talking about the supernatural, pragmatic Eve won't let rumors of ghosts distract her from hard evidence. The case becomes even more bizarre when it appears to be linked to the suspicious disappearance of a rock star eighty-five years ago. As Eve searches for the connection, logic clashes with the unexplainable. She may be forced to face the threat of something more dangerous than a flesh-and-blood killer.

In this IN DEATH novella, Detective Eve Dallas is called to the scene of an iconic New York club to investigate the death of the grandson of the man who made it famous. This was an interesting novella because a murder from 80 years ago and one that just took place in the present day are connected and Eve has to dig into the history of the building from back in the 1970’s to figure out how and who is responsible.

3.5 stars**

I rated this one a bit lower just because it was shorter even for a novella since usually Nora Roberts are longer than normal. Anyway, interesting case enjoyed the touch of paranormal or was it?! 😉

Just a novella and I always prefer longer books, but still typical J.D. Robb. It made me laugh a lot.

Eve's attitude to ghosts was just so typical of her and her resultant debates with both Roarke and Peabody on the possibility of their existence were hilarious. In fact Eve and Peabody were in top form throughout, making me laugh out loud several times. Oh and also do that dreadful thing of reading bits out to any other adult who happened to be around. Don't you hate people who do that!

As I said I prefer full length books, but here Robb writes a nice tight novella with plenty of action and a good story. I enjoyed it.

A short novella, but nevertheless a classic Eve Dallas murder mystery featuring a man shot in derelict nightclub that is believed to be haunted. The fact that a gun was used is a surprise to Eve since guns are now outlawed in 2060, so gunshot wounds are not something she is used to seeing. The dead man is the grandson of the original owner of the nightclub in the 1970s, who was strongly believed in many to be responsible for the disappearance of his wife, the famous singer Bobbie Bray.

Although Peabody is reluctant to enter the haunted building, Eve of course doesn't believe in ghosts, at least not at the start of the investigation. A fun episode with lots packed in to a tight plot.

As it neared Halloween I was excited to find that my next book in the In Death Seres is this one "Haunted In Death". Perfect, I'll just read this and call it my Halloween book for this year. Win-Win.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas is a no-nonsense cop and when she is called to a crime scene at a building known to be haunted, she does not for a second believe a ghost is the perp. The abandoned nightclub was a happening place in the 1960's-70's until a famous singer, Bobbie Bray, went missing and the owner became a recluse. Decades later the grandson of the original owner, Radcliff C. Hopkins, has been murdered and Eve will not accept that a ghost did him. Rad had big plans to resurrect the infamous nightclub and may have made some enemies, other than an angry ghost, along the way.

Lt. Eve Dallas investigates the murder of Radcliff Hoskins, the new owner of Number 12, a building that is said to be haunted. Hoskins recently bought the building in order to renovate it to its former glory. Number 12 was a nightclub in the 1960's, owned by Radcliff's grandfather at that time. Eve doesn't believe in the supernatural and doesn't like the distractions in this case. Talk of ghosts aren't going to stop her from solving this murder.

I usually enjoy the novellas in this series, but this one was just OK for me. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

As much as I love this series this book was just ok for me. I prefer the audiobooks, but since this was such a short read I decided to just read the book. The energy of Robb's other books wasn't there right from the beginning, but I assumed it was because I'm so hooked on the audiobooks. So, I got the audiobook - it still fell flat. Although, it picked up half way through, it just never could overcome the absurd plot. With this series being set in the future, you often have to suspend belief for the books to work which I don't mind because that's what makes visiting the world of In Death so much fun. However, this ghost storyline just went too far. I love paranormal reads and have no problem with creatures that go bump in the night, but it just felt out of place here.

Nonetheless, the journey through the ridiculousness was mildly amusing and Eve's refusal to believe in ghost was funny and worthy of 3 stars. Definitely not Nora's best work.

In the words of the Cowardly Lion, "I do believe in ghosts! I do! I do believe in ghosts." 👻
But, for me...they usually just tick me off. They pop up at very inconvenient times.
Anyway, in this book, Eve has to do a bit of ghost busting while solving a couple of murders. Excellent book!!!

A haunted and cursed place plus the idea of a ghost lurking kept people at bay in Number Twelve. (place) But murder happened there and our pragmatic and skeptical Eve did not let the legend deter her investigation.

Different from the rest, too short but still enjoyable. Anything that there's Eve is enjoyable :)

This is an In Death novella about how a current murder relates to an old, unsolved disappearance/murder. Bobbie Bray was a female singer who became popular in the 1960s, but disappeared and has been presumed dead for many years. The grandson of Ms Bray’s lover has been murdered, shot with a mid-20th century handgun, at the site of a 60s nightclub. When Eve arrives to investigate, one wall has been opened up to reveal a skeleton that turns out to be that of Bobbie Bray. The building has been reputed to be haunted and/or cursed for many years. Eve sees and hears some spooky phenomena but unlike Peabody and Roarke — and even level-headed Feeney — refuses to entertain the possibility of ghosts.

A murdered young singer on the rise haunts the building in Manhattan where she is believed to have died.

A building believed cursed.

Now a new murder might just solve an old one.

Haunted In Death is a novella available either as an individual ebook, or, as a bind up in print or ebook, that also includes the novella Eternity in Death. I read it as part of the bind up but I'm reviewing both stories separately as I'm reading the whole In Death series in order & haven't got as far as the second novella yet.

In this story Eve is investigating a murder at a supposedly haunted nightclub, a very old skeleton was discovered at the same time as the fresh body and it looks like the two murders might be connected even though they happened decades apart.

This was a fun and quite spooky little story and a great addition to the In Death series. With all the strange goings on at the nightclub Peabody and the others, even Roarke, start to suspect it could really be haunted. Eve is far too practical to believe in anything supernatural but even her nerves are tested a time or two and there were some hilarious conversations where she is bemused by the people around her suddenly talking about ghosts and life after death.

3.5 rounded up
There was a lot going on here and I would have liked more of the ghost story. It was a good story but it seemed a bit rushed a the conclusion. I really enjoy the inaction with Eve and Roarke regarding the spirits.

Dallas & Peabody investigate the murder of Radcliff Hopkins III whose body was found at Number Twelve. Once a famous club, it's rumoured to be haunted following the disappearance of singing sensation Bobbie Bray who frequently sang there in the late twentieth century, & everyone who has owned the building since has either died or suffered some other kind of tragedy. Radcliff III is just the latest, but Dallas doesn't believe in the supernatural so she sets out to find out who hated Hopkins enough to kill him. He was trying to renovate Number Twelve to bring it back to its former glory, but he was a bit of a player, & the case turns out to be linked the disappearance of Bray from almost a century before.

This is a short but tightly written novella which clocks in at 100 pages. Dallas's exasperation at Peabody, Roarke, & Feeney, amongst others, believing that the building is haunted & cursed is amusing. The paranormal element was a nice change from the usual cases. I did find it difficult to remember that the first murder happened in the 1980s because it seemed to fit with more of a 1920s vibe. I don't know why but to me it did. A diverting short read, now I'm moving on to the next full-length book in the series.

Oddly enough, I wasn't that impressed with this story. The time setting was off for me, as this would have made a decent Halloween story, but was set in Mid-January. Eve's refusal to believe in the paranormal, or accept others' belief of same was irritating, especially when she is confronted full on by the ghost! The story itself felt rushed, and there wasn't the same mystery vibe to it. Eve knew who did it way too quickly, and with very little investigative work. While I plan to continue the series, this is not a good installment in the series.

Not a very satisfying story. Ghosts, apparitions, cold spots, crazy people...Meh. But a good take on what may have been/most likely had been Hugh Hefner.

Quick and fun mystery with a dash of supernatural thrown in.
It’s always fun to see how Eve (being an extreme realist) and Roarke (and Peabody) react to such phenomenons.

This was book 22.5 in the "In Death" . This was a creepy crazy crime. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is called there to investigate the apparent murder of Radcliff Hopkins, its new owner and the grandson of the man who made Number Twelve a cultural icon. Several bullets from a banned gun end his dream of returning the building to its former glory. Eve needs to figure out what happened. The victim has several ex-wives and is always looking for his next score he wanted to capitalize on the legend of Bobbie Bray. Eve traces Redcliff Hopkins past to see if there are clues. Everything seems to lead back to his grandfather's day and the mysterious disappearance of Bobbie Bray and it seems Bobbie Bray has never left the building. Eve hears voices and music but dismisses it. She is far too rational to ever believe in ghosts. Though Roarke is willing to believe in the possibility of ghosts which puts he and Eve somewhat at odds. Eve does have to come to the realization of why she doesn't want to believe in ghosts which helps us understand her and helps her understand herself. This was a good edition to this series. I liked the narration of this audiobook.

I'm what's referred to in medical journals and higher research circles as a "chicken." Any mention of the paranormal other than a friendly ghost and I am OUTTA HERE. So I approached this one with a substantial degree of trepidation... but it really wasn't much on the ghost/poltergeist angle, mercifully.
