Isla Belthare lives an ordinary life in her small village of Lockhurt. Since losing both her mother and the man she loved two years ago, all she wants is stability and peace. But her world is forever changed when her family is attacked on a journey away from home and she must travel to the Aataran mountain range to find them.

Across the realm, four ancient beings who control the elements of nature are awakening.

After a civil war that tore the humans apart, the elementals entered a thousand year slumber. Now, they are being summoned to prevent a dark force that is greedy for power and threatening to overturn the balance of nature.

When Isla’s path crosses with one of these elementals, she finds her fate is more entangled with theirs than she had ever imagined. As she risks it all to follow the elementals on their journey to defeat the unknown foe, she discovers that not everything may be as it seems. Isla is torn between protecting her loved ones or following her heart down a dangerous path of power and magic, of truth and lies.

In my completely unbiased, very humble opinion…give this book a shot. :) Fantasy, romance, immortals + humans working together, morally grey characters, multiple POVs, forced proximity…there’s so much to love!

The prophecy had been there for as long as she could remember and even though time had eroded most of the letters from the rock, she knew the warning by heart.

Bones of the earth, yours to reclaim;
Born of fire, forged in flame;
Blood of water, to be remade,
Breath of life to never fade.
Beware, great powers, of a coming storm
That lies behind these distant shores.
A silent force, born of night’s bane
Will bring to light an end of reign."

WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?! Ohmygosh, guys, this book made it to my my favorites list. Sure, it wasn't the best book I've ever read, but it was so clever. The characters, the romance, the magic system/elemental magic, the AETHER (whoaaaaa, did not see THAT coming)... all of it was just SO GOOD! A flaw of mine is not being able to form cohesive thoughts after I finish an amazing book, so that's why my reviews tend to be a lot of my ramblings... but I'll try!

Long Live just screamed at me from my Amazon cart. Guys, I had about 20 books in there but I just knew this would be the one because it's similar to my own WIP regarding the elemental magic aspect... and a lot of other aspects, but it's also very reminiscent of Avatar: The Last Airbender. So, if you like AtLA, or elemental magic, or you like the romance from Dance of Thieves and Powerless, this book is for you! It has kind of? an enemies-to-lovers trope, with a load of banter, small-big fight scenes, and prophecies speaking of a savior coming to help stop the coming storm.

★ CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THE MAP FOR A SECOND?! MIGHT MAKE TOP 3 IN MY LIST, AND I'VE SEEN A LOT OF MAPS
Solid worldbuilding; developed enough so that we have a sense of where we are and what it looks like. The map made it a whole lot easier, too.
Enjoyable, unique characters. Elementals were so cool!
No spice romance (yayy, because this is SO hard to find in today's YA book world), but it the romance was still sweet and swoon worthy! Lingering touches, blushing, knee brushes, smiles... it's like the romance in Dance of Thieves and Powerless.
★ Rynn in the beginning?>>> the way he wasn't a hugger, lol. But the ✨rare smiles✨, the ✨calling her beautiful✨, the ✨protectiveness against the other elementals' rage✨... read this for those scenes, lolll
Ingenious plot
★ Fast paced,
so you're never bored
Epic fight scene at the end; magical contestings where the elementals are pitted against each other
War torn kingdom, political intrigue.
★ Mysterious unknown forces working at every corner to cause mayhem
★ Ok this may just be me but...
★ Includes: elemental magic, slow-burn romance, love triangle, one-cave.
But this book was amazing because of the characters. We had so many strong, interesting figures of the elementals; powerful, immortal, fierce. I loved all four of them, and just could not get enough of them!

☙ A bar scene, drinking wine and ale; possibly a character gets drunk
☙ mentions of 'sneaking out'; flirty behavior;
☙ immortals aren't gods, but some people view them as gods.
☙ God, the source of all creation, is referenced as the'primeval gods' in this book. Sometimes, Isla calls Rynn, "the God of Air," with a capital G. This is done quite a lot with the other elementals, too, annoying me.
☙ gore, death, fight scenes ending in violence + murder
☙ a few suggestive comments, though not many; no spice
☙ physical attraction
☙ Rynn walks in on Isla bathing in the hot springs, naked, though she's hidden and he doesn't see anything. Isla and Rynn do let their thoughts wander, though, during this scene...
☙ magic (elemental). The fifth immortal, Celesine/the Aether, is the 'spirit' that flows through them, guiding them.

"The fiercest huntress in the land."
~ FMC ~ Isla was quite enjoyable! She was a strong FMC, though quite typical, I must admit. She was fierce and loyal, and loved her family above all else. She had this admirable resolve that lured me in like a month to a flame. A huntress, she was deadly, but still rose from the ashes to become stronger than ever. I loved her stand on how she must choose for herself. From warily meeting the elementals to forging her own path of independence, she came a long way in Long Live.

🌬🌪 𝓡𝔂𝓷𝓷 🌪🌬
"Her cries had echoed to him on the wind. He had not even realized he had been listening; perhaps his air simply knew where he needed to be. His fellow elementals had a habit of idolizing their magic, of letting their respective elements lead them and mold them. Throughout their lifetimes, they had placed tremendous faith in their aspects of nature and claimed that it was what gave them purpose, gave them power.

Rynn had never been fond of this notion. He viewed air as a tool and a weapon that answered to him and him alone. The air did not command 𝘩𝘪𝘮; 𝘩𝘦 commanded 𝘪𝘵."

~ THE AIR ELEMENTAL ~ Okayy, I have a lot to say about Rynn. At first, he was my favorite character. He was dark and mysterious, and his precious smiles had me smiling too. He was cautious not to hurt Isla's feelings, yet his carefully shielded heart slowly started to crack at this human girl's pesky questions and resolve. Rynn gave off lone wolf vibes, sort of a recluse. He always shied away from being the center, yet had a subtle arrogantness to him, according to the other elementals. I, for one, didn't see him that way, but I don't know... he did always have to make a grand entrance, lol. Rynn's element was fascinating. From the execution of his character, I learned a lot of stuff that I plan on adding to my own WIP. Air is a fickle thing; so seeing how Lacey made Rynn manipulate it was super clever. The way he glided through the air, using it as momentum; He could shoot himself in the sky, create air bubbles to protect himself from the rain, stop arrows midair, create air walls, fight other elements with it... all super cool stuff! But as I furthered into the book, my love for Rynn faltered. Yes, he was broken and was hesitant to trust, but he was also fiery and overprotective. Super overprotective. He ran away in anger when things didn't go as he planned, or he hurt other people. He was handsome and brooding, but he needs a redemption, because right now, I'm #teamsebastian.

🌊💦 𝓚𝓪𝓲 💦🌊
"She breathed in the salt and brine and fresh air and sunshine. The sea was the blood in her veins, the breath in her lungs."
~ THE WATER ELEMENTAL ~ Kai was my favorite elemental of the four. She was amazing in every way, a wild spirit, free and beautiful. She was very likeable, and her emotions were so raw. She was strong yet vulnerable, longing for a human life to settle down and be happy, to spend time with her husband and grow old together. Her banter and love for her husband was so wholesome; the way they were each others' worlds just made me melt! I wish them both happiness to come. Continually, I loved the way her element worked, and how the sea was her happy place. She was so sweet to Isla, and so forgiving to others. I loved her!

🌿🍃 𝓙𝓪𝓭𝓮 🍃🌿
p.10 • "She could barely see, but her other senses could feel the earth and rock around her. Its steadfastness, its strength, its beauty. The earth had been her resting place for lifetimes, a comfort and home to her soul while her body was dormant."
~ THE EARTH ELEMENTAL ~ Jade was... interesting. I don't really have a lot to say about her, but she was an ok FMC. I just wish we had more page time with her. She had a quiet beauty, and if I had to describe her one way, it's "the maternal figure of the group." She always wanted to approach things peacefully, and found true rest in the solitude of the sure earth. Her connection to the roots, the sand, the rocks... it was really well done. Her power caused her to experience some flaws, but she still found solace in nature. She could be a little pesty at times, but she was still likeable, I suppose! Again, I hope the next book features her POV more.

🔥🌋 𝓐𝓲𝓭𝓪𝓷 🌋🔥
"Aidan was hard-pressed to admit it, but there moments when he struggled to command his fire. It was the fiercest, most temperamental and destructive of the elements. He hated to concede any sort of weakness, but it frightened him at times. How the burning, boiling heat occasionally licked at his control, taunting him to lash out and consume.
He could keep it at bay. Usually."

~ THE FIRE ELEMENTAL ~ Aidan was so great! His playful banter and flirtatious character was hilarious, but not to the point where it was uncomfortable. He recognized others' strengths, but also had this hidden part of him that feared himself; feared his element. I felt bad for Aidan because his emotions were so clearly channeled through his element, and he had to constantly dance with fire, quite literally. He played dangerous games with his flames, and had trauma from hurting the ones he loved in the past. He tried to be so careful, but I really did sympathize with him as he struggled to smolder all the pain and anger. His love for his wife is something I'll never forget, though. The way he was so selfless in the end, and chose to sacrifice to keep her happy, yet knowing that without each other, they would be nothing?... I just wanted to cry. He had a great character development, and seeing his persistent love for Kai after milennia was so endearing. Here's a quote I must share because it's just so good: "Aidan pulled back slightly and brought his fingers to her chin, gently tilting her head to meet his dark eyes. ‘You make me want to give. You are my passion, my power, what makes me feel alive. You are my fire, and that can't ever be taken away from
me. So if you want to become mortal and live out your life as a human, I'll come with you.’"
*sobs* girls, find yourself a man like Aidan 🥹

"He would move kingdoms to find her, if she still lived. He would get her back.
The king rose from his knees."

~ THE KING/DARK GOD ~ not me rooting for the villain/morally grey character *hides*
I'm sorry, but I loved him! At first, he repulsed me, with his touchiness and sinister smiles. But as we learned about Sebastian killed me with that ending, because that quote set up the next book perfectly. I loved his dual-sides, the conflicting, internal war raging against him. I love it when characters struggle to blot out the darkness trying so hard to seep in. But love makes you forget your flaws, I supposed. Sebastian was redeemed in the end, and I just hope so badly that Can't wait to see how he plays out in the next book, because I've seen some good character art, hehe... 👀

Excuse me as I go THROW UP after that BRUTAL cliffhanger.

Like, seriously, Vanessa. WHAT THE HECK.

I need a stiff drink ASAP. Wherever Bri went at the end, that's where I also need to be.

In all seriousness...This was such a fun, action-packed tale with heart-warming characters. The beginning did move a little slow for me pacing-wise, but it 100% picked up at around the 60% mark and just never looked back. I also found *some* of the twists at the end a bit predictable...but sure as heck not all of them. And then to leave us where it did?! I'd call it cruel if I wasn't guilty of something disgustingly similar.

Anyways. If you're looking for a new fantasy that's spice-free and action-packed, I 10/10 recommend picking this one up when it releases on August 1. Just be prepared to throw your book or kindle across the room at the end and then proceed to sit and dry-heave in the bathtub (...was this just me? oh okay nevermind)

~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you to Vanessa for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I'm so happy I met you on the internet, and I'm so stinking proud of you for doing the dang thing.
This book deserves more than 5 stars! An epic story that you won't want to miss!
Not only is it beautifully written, but it has a fresh take on elemental magic (my personal favorite) while giving us those familiar things in fantasy that we all love. It's got elemental magic, multiple povs, relatable characters, strong female lead, swoony romance, and some plot twists you'll never see coming.
Do yourself a favor and read this book as soon as possible! Lacey is a phenomenal author and I can't wait to see what comes next!
That cliffhanger is a doozy though, so be prepared. But I promise it's worth it!
I’d say Long Live was a solid 3-star read. It has unique elementals aspect and world building. I also liked the multiple POVs for each element and the writing was good. There was some steam and tension but no real spice - which was fine I don’t think the book missed it. There were just a lot of moments the plot wasn’t fully jiving for me to get hooked to the story.
What I really didn’t like was the FMC Isla. For a girl who claimed to do everything for her family she was extremely selfish. I liked her at first, but by the end couldn’t stand her and the self righteousness. She was also a huge hypocrite…***SPOILERS BELOW ****
She could sacrifice herself anytime to be the hero - but no one else could make their own decisions? Case in point she thought it was okay for her to use compulsion multiple times on her family and friends(e.g Brielle and her Dad) but if that happened to her it would’ve been her crying for 5 chapters about it.
Her relationship with Rynn started so good then fell off a cliff so quickly it felt forced just so she could get the enemies to lovers plot with Sebastian to make sense.
The biggest problem is there is a HUGE plot hole surrounding her brother Arden that was just glossed over. How is Arden not involved at all if they come from the same bloodline and are TWINs - couldn’t he have also wielded the dagger and yet he’s barely mentioned in the book? It’s not even mentioned how they could’ve used him to get to the dagger also. And no explanation about why the father doesn’t tell them of their heritage?? And then the ending the brother just dies!! It just didn’t make sense to me at all considering this whole book could technically been about him also since he also is a Vasileia…
I though was pretty obvious that Celesine was the villain once she shows up since there were no other candidates for who could be controlling the King. It was almost blatantly written out pretty early on and I feel like the end could have had a bigger payoff twist if it was less obvious.
All in all I thought it was a good book, but I wasn’t jumping up and down about it.
ALSO - JUSTICE FOR HAMIL!!! I liked him more than Rynn and Sebastian COMBINED!!!
Long Live was genuinely such a fun read. I absolutely love the magic system and the world/history was so interesting.
It's multiple POV which I adore and all the characters are amazing. I loved them all so much. Aiden is such a sweet, sassy teddy bear, and don't even get me started on him and Kai🥹🫠🫠 I'm in love with Rynn, Jade is so stoic it's funny, and Isla is a great heroine.
"Aidan vowed to do everything in his power to keep her safe, to make her feel loved and protected. To make her feel like the goddess she’d always been to him."
This is a no spice romance, but trust me when I say the angst and swoon worthy scenes are top tier. The love interest situation was very interesting. I have my favorites, and I'm excited to see who, if any of them, she ends up with.
"Poor man woke up one day and realized his best friend’s sister could wield a spear, skin a bear, and had large breasts. He never stood a chance."
If you like strong world building, elemental magic, anxiety rep, forced proximity, prophecies, and surprising plot twists, then this is the book for you
Long Live started out strong and I really enjoyed it. The things that didn't make this a 5 star read were some details/events towards the end that, in my opinion, weren't developed quite right. However this is still a very fun book.
Big thanks to Vanessa for the ARC
I legitimately could not tell you how I managed to get all the way through this novel.
I got 85% of the way in and then just... paused the audiobook randomly and watched AITA reddit stories on TikTok for an hour. THAT is how much I did not give a shit about anything that was going on in this story.
I don't think this book knew what it wanted to be. At all.
Let me see if I can break down what happens. Spoilers ahead. Obviously.
1. We meet Isla. Legendary bad-decision maker, Katniss Everdeen Stan, and sucker for a pretty dude, regardless of whether or not she maybe already has a love interest.
2. Isla immediately shows us how smart she is and how great of a hunter she is by agreeing to accompany two COMPLETELY STRANGE MEN out onto the NOTORIOUSLY DANGEROUS roads to travel to another city to visit her father and brother WHO HAVE BEEN ATTACKED BY BANDITS.
But don't worry. It's cool because Isla just feels like these two dudes (who she later learns are called Damian and August) are totes safe fr.
She even drags her annoyingly horny and completely useless BFF along for the ride, because why not.
Only they don't make it very far because Isla overhears another group of travelers being mauled by ruffians and just INSISTS on going to help.
2. What follows is a blurry and sometimes incoherent montage of Isla being alternately badass with a bow and arrow and murdering everybody and Isla being kidnapped and threatened with death and rape by the bandits she didn't manage to kill.
3. Enter love interest number 1. Rynn. Epically broody Air elemental, immortal, also potentially a possessive misogynist asshole.
He saves her once or twice from these miscellaneous bad guys, carries her off to his CAVE to recover.
4. We spend HALF THE BOOK in this cave.
5. While all of that is happening to Isla, we are also following Jade, Kai, and Aidan. The three other elemental immortal beings. Earth, Water, and Fire respectively.
Jade's ornery and bitches about everything all the time. Has a problem with everybody and is generally just an absolute pleasure to read.
Kai and Aidan -- these two are the only really interesting part of the story. They're husband and wife, but had some kind of massive falling out 1000 years ago before the 4 elementals fell into hibernation or something and now they're having to work through their issues while also figuring out how to love each other again.
They were kinda cute, honestly.
Jade, Kai and Aidan are all traveling to wherever the fuck Rynn and Isla are because when they woke up some weird voice in their head told them to.
Yep.
6. Isla does eventually meet up with her family, only to immediately leave them again because she's been told by some weirdo dark god figure that she's important and has to stay with the elementals for some random quest.
6-a. First, they have to find the second half of a prophecy. Even though in the present, the first half hasn't even been discussed. They eventually do. Nobody knows what it means and it's promptly forgotten about.
6-b. The group need to return to Iona (the fabled 4th kingdom that existed once upon a time but there was a war and now it's gone. Or something.) But first! Isla needs to side-quest back to her hometown because that's where her brother and dad are now and she needs to check on them.
7. Kai and Isla reach Isla's home only to find it in shambles. Dad and brother gone. They also conveniently find a book with Isla's complete genealogy listed in it. A book that, I'm assuming, is over 1000 years old and somehow not dust. This whole side-quest was for the sole purpose of telling the reader that Isla is a direct descendant of the ancient king and queen of Iona.
7-a. Oh. And while they're there, Weirdo Dark God guy ends up striking up a deal with Isla to get him this knife thing (that may or may not have to do with the prophecy???) in return for letting her father and brother live. He's kidnapped them and is holding them hostage. He also gives her a vial of his blood so she can astral project to him whenever she wants to chitchat. As you do.
8. about 65% of the way through the book, the 4 elementals and Isla FINALLY manage to get on a boat headed toward the ruined island kingdom. By this time, she's already once visited Dark God Guy--who we learn is actually the reclusive King Sebastian-- and had a little kissy kissy session with him because he's not REALLY all that bad, despite the fact that he's manipulating the 4 elementals in heinous ways and blackmailing Isla into getting him this power-stealing dagger that apparently her family owned once upon a time but has been lost for centuries.
This is where I fully checked out of the romance in this book. It's not great. Isla and Rynn's 'relationship' if you can call it that is weak at best and forced and gross at worst. I'm pretty sure she 'falls' for him initially because she's in a fucking CAVE and there's literally nobody else around to talk to for 2 weeks. He's protective and sweet, until he's not. Then he's over-bearing, territorial and controlling--and sometimes abusive. The transition between these two personalities is abrupt and completely unnatural. Isla rightfully goes off him--but only AFTER she makes out with the possessed King Sebastian.
King Sebastian's not any better as a love interest. Even though what he's doing isn't his fault and he has no control over it, he's still a dangerous threat to her and to the world. He's still ordered raiders to ransack travelers for 2 years looking for this knife which has led to people being slaughtered all over his kingdom. He kidnaps Isla's dad and brother and manipulates all 4 elementals and Isla into doing his bidding... There's a lot of reasons Isla shouldn't be all goo-goo-ga-ga for him.
The weird back and forth she has over which of the two she likes more--bleugh. I'd rather eat lead paint chips.
9. In the middle of the ocean, Isla begins to hear/feel this mysterious hum and it's coming from the bottom of the ocean. Kai (water elemental) takes her down to an ancient ship wreck to find the dagger hidden in a chest. Isla picks the dagger up and immediately turns into a homicidal psycho and tries to kill Kai.
It takes her approximately 6 paragraphs for Isla to figure out how to hold the blade without murdering anybody. Mozel Tov.
10. The King's ship (which has apparently been following them the whole time) is catching up to them. There's a barrier that prevents ordinary people from sailing beyond it, but the elementals persuade August and Damian (You remember these guys????? Yeah, the same pair that traveled to Isla's home to tell her that her brother and father were attacked! Those guys! What the fuck are they doing on a boat? Who the hell knows!) to sail beyond the barrier. Wha-hey! Theyr'e at Iona.
11. Turns out there's actually people still living on the island. They're not impresed with Isla OR the elementials. But it doesn't matter because they fuck off and aren't heard from again.
Bri gets hidden away with the rest of the mortals--what she's doing in this story I have no fucking idea. She's goddamned useless.
King Sebastian shows up, and SURPRISE! Isla's dad and brother are along for the ride. Isn't that awesome?
12. Chaos ensues, obviously. The 4 elementals end up fighting each other, all being manipulated by the King. They're also simultaneously destroying the island. It's all very drawn out and dramatic and makes no fucking sense because Kai has the dagger and Sebastian COULD have just bid her to hand the goddamned thing over but NNoooooOOOOoooo.
13. Isla takes all 4 elementals powers. Then gives them to herself.
14.
What follows is a summary of the entire book that we JUST READ. Even with the spirit elemental's commentary, shit doesn't make any sense. But whatever. Thanks for the recap, I guess.
15. Bad guy and Isla fight. Some people die. Then, before the fight can finish, Isla and the spirit elemental disappear.
16. The King vows to get Isla back because apparently he's been in love with her for 2 years and she's his everything. Or something. I dunno.
The end.
Yeah so. Uh.
I could say a lot. About the characters and the plot (holes) and...but I don't have the energy.
So I'm just gonna say this one thing. This one thing has nagged me throughout this whole story:
How is it these 4 elementals all sound like they're barely legal teenagers? They're THOUSANDS of years old. Just awoken from a 1000 year sleep.
So how are they able to converse with Isla and others with modern turns of phrase? 1000 years ago the English didn't even speak English! Certainly not in any form we'd recognize today! Am I to assume that this fantasy world hasn't evolved AT ALL in the past 1000 years? How is it they know how to use money, buy clothes and beer and food, rent rooms at inns?
Where'd they even get their clothes and money from? (I mean we're told that Aidan, I think, robs people--or maybe it's Kai. But what about Jade and Rynn?)
And! Where's the wisdom and maturity beyond human comprehension? How is it they guided humanity in the beginning, protecting them and nurturing them when they act like they've consumed 12 redbulls for breakfast?
Eugh.
Anyway.
This story may have had potential. The premise sounded intriguing and thus the reason I picked this book up in the first place.
I can't even say this felt unpolished. It's worse than that. Vague stoylines that go nowhere and make no sense, characters that all weirdly sound alike and repeat the same things over and over again, a magic system that's all over the place and has no rules... yeah. I've dreamed stuff like this. I just haven't woken up, written what I could remember down and sent it to a publishing company.
Overall, a solid romantasy! The elemental aspect was unique and different. After being asleep for a thousand years, four elemental beings are summoned awake. Our mortal FMC crosses paths with the immortals and joins forces with them to figure out what woke them and why. The characters were great. The tension and romance was swoon worthy. I loved the dialogue and interactions between characters and the overall plot and story was intriguing. The things I didn’t like was how some things felt too convenient just to get from point A to point B. The FMC also didn’t use her noodle a lot and mad questionable choices. There was also something that happened at the end that I feel was absolutely unnecessary, and probably couldve been avoided…it wasn’t as impactful as it should have been in my option. These issues weren’t enough to hinder my overall enjoyment. The book made me feel. It did it’s job and made me escape an attach myself to fictional character. I look forward to book 2!
From the first page to the very last, I was absolutely enthralled by Long Live.
Long Live is a beautifully written debut fantasy romance with a unique take on elemental magic and felt like a completely new story with so many elements I loved.
The best way to describe this book is unexpected, but in the best way. I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t see any of the plot twists coming, it went a completely different direction than I thought, and I loved every moment of it.
There are mysterious forces at work that woke up the elementals and there is an unknown villain who is causing issues. Isla is thrown together with the elementals and they are forced to work together to destroy a dark god who is threatening the world.
Long Live is very much a character driven book but it’s not slow at all, which I sometimes find in character driven books. I truly appreciated every page and getting to know all the characters through their POVs. It also has slow burn adventure with a hint of romance, and overall it was the perfect recipe for an amazing book.
Isla is one of my favorite FMC’s. Isla is strong willed, fierce, badass woman who can wield a weapon as well as any man. She doesn’t need a man to protect her, she protects herself, and I LOVED it. Also she has such a level head and knows what she wants. She doesn’t let others force her to do something or make choices for her and I really admired that. She stood up for herself and I was so proud of her.
VB Lacey has a way of creating so much depth in every single one of these characters. Each elemental felt so authentic and relatable, but had their own flaws and experiences. I’m so attached to all of them. I love the drama and messy history between all the elementals. It felt like one big f’ed up family that still loves each other and would do anything for one another. Kai and Aiden are my absolute favs though, I just want the best for them.
The story took a direction I did not expect but was actually blown away by. Long Live is chock full of mind blowing secrets that I didn’t predict at all.
Lone Live is one of those books where I thought I know who the love interest was, but ended up being completely surprised. The dark god was so unexpected and I loved him. I’m always a sucker for the morally grey character.
Long Live has an utterly heart-breaking, maddening ending and I am dying to know what happens next.
Things to expect:
-Elemental Magic
-Multi POV
-God-like beings
-Quest to find a lost artifact
Spice: no 🌶 but YES to swoon-worthy moments!
I would first like to thank the author for the eARC opportunity. Like always, this review is voluntary & honest.
So this book was one where once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. I really liked the way the world & the characters were introduced & it didn’t feel overwhelming. I was hooked but once I hit the 50-60% mark, I felt like certain character developments that occurred made me disconnect from the book a bit.
To those that know me well, you know I’m a character focused person. I love diving into character’ stories, personalities, developments & relationships. But there was a relationship in this book whose development & progression took a turn that left me confused in a way. Which then had a domino effect on the way I felt about different plot points that happened after that.
Isla’s a badass character, a lethal huntress. She loves fiercely & wholly gives herself to ensure her family’s health & safety. I was intrigued by her story, admired her tenacity & I related to her constant curiosity. I also could relate to her need of being independent & making her own decisions & also finding her own path & destiny.
Kai, Jade, Aidan & Rynn, they all brought different traits & personalities to the story which I adored. I loved how they each had their own stories, hardships, struggles that made these immortal beings seem human. Sebastian, a suave, morally grey character who will have you melting with his words alone. Whose story will have you thinking not all is as it seems. Bri, the fierce best friend who will walk into the darkness with & for her best friend time & time again. She is also a lover of books & fantasy we all can relate to!
In the end, they all ended up having their own spot in my heart, but out of them all, Rynn, Sebastian, Kai & Aidan ended up my top favorites of this story. They each were complex characters with amazing stories & perfect examples of characters that are not wholly good nor bad.
If you love stories with elemental magic, multiple POVs & morally gray characters, this might be the next read for you!
Five dazzling stars for Long Live. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Long Live by V.B. Lacey is an absolute triumph! From start to finish, this debut novel had me completely captivated. V.B. Lacey has blown me away with her descriptive prose, her meticulous attention to detail, and her masterful storytelling. Long Live is a spectacular debut that left me breathless.
The multi-POV story follows the journey of four immortal elementals and a strong female protagonist, Isla, whose determination and courage is truly inspiring. Isla is a woman who knows her worth and is immensely loyal to the people she loves. Together, Isla and the elementals journey to the island of Iona to uncover the origins of an ominous threat.
The vivid world that V.B. Lacey has created is breathtakingly beautiful, and the unique lore she has crafted is nothing short of remarkable. From the first page to the last, Long Live is a spellbinding adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat.
What I loved most about this book was the way V.B. Lacey weaved together intricate plot threads with exquisite character development. The characters in Long Live are so richly drawn, so fully realized, that they felt like old friends by the end of the book. I was completely invested in their journeys, and I couldn't wait to see where the story would take them. (There is a helluva cliffhanger at the end, but don't let that stop you. The story is entirely worth it.)
Overall, Long Live is a dazzling debut that showcases V.B. Lacey's incredible talent as a writer. I can't wait to see what V.B. Lacey will come up with next, and I'm already dying for book two. If you're looking for a beautifully written, action-packed fantasy with a strong female lead, and butterfly-inducing romance, look no further. Long Live is an absolute gem of a book!
Fans of ACOTAR, These Hollow Vows, The Bridge Kingdom, and Oath Taker, you will enjoy this one tremendously!
Thanks for letting me read an early copy, V.B. Lacey! <3
An epic fantasy with a spice free romance side plot, unique elemental magic, found family, and a strong female lead character. I appreciated that each character had a little bit of “morally grey” in them, which made them less predictable when faced with their own obstacles.
“It was funny, she thought, how one could be two sides of the same coin. A hero to some, and a villain to others.”
There’s some necessary world building and character development with multiple POVs to start (I usually don’t like too many POVs- but this one was well done with each character having a distinct “voice”)- after the ground work was established I absolutely devoured it!
Isla is an independent and strong, but vulnerable FMC who isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and her friends. I loved her POV the most!
I want to get drinks with Bri and Kai- the best girlfriends that will always have your back!
The men in this book are swooooon worthy! They have a way with words, but are also dynamic, complicated, and broody- and would burn the world down for those they love.
Great plot twists and the cliff hanger has me dyinggggg for book 2!!
Fans of ACOTAR will love this!
More favorite quotes below 👇🏼
“‘Do you want to know what I did to those men for daring to touch you, an innocent human?’ He paused, his breath on her skin causing the hair on the back of her neck to rise. ‘I slit their throats and left them to rot in their blood.’”
“‘Beautiful, vicious girl. I like it when you show your teeth.’”
“‘You’re not going to stab me, are you, love?’”
“‘She was terrified of him, of how he seared her skin and kept her locked in place. Of how she involuntarily leaned into his touch. Of how, at any point in time, his gentle fingers could turn deadly.’”
“I can think of much worse ways to meet my end than on my knees before you.”
“Even the devil has a heart, love. As cold and black as it may be.”
The story follows Isla, a young woman whose life is forever changed when her family is attacked and she meets an ancient elemental who needs her assistance.
Lacey's storytelling prowess shines through in the richly developed characters and intricate plot. Isla is a compelling character who is grappling with loss, blooming love, and discovering her inner strength. The relationships between Isla and these elementals (and a mysterious 'dark god') add a layer of intrigue, as she finds herself drawn into a conflict that spans generations. Watching her stand toe-to-toe with immortals is fascinating and I love how complex their bonds are with her. The world-building in "Long Live" is superb and each setting is vividly depicted, immersing readers in a world teeming with elemental and blood magic.
I absolutely adore the dark gods' cat-and-mouse relationship with all of the elementals and Isla in particular. He is a compelling character and I loved every single thing that we learned about him. I am SO excited to see how things progress with him now that more has been revealed.
But what truly sets this novel apart is its emotional depth and resonance. I cried, which is automatically a five-star rating because I was clearly emotionally invested. Lacey deftly explores these characters and their struggles, crafting a narrative that is as poignant as it is entertaining. V.B. Lacey has created a mesmerizing debut novel that promises an unforgettable reading experience. I'm SO excited to see what comes next.
Excellent world building, multiple characters to fall in love with, awesome elemental magical system, this book has it all! I absolutely adored so many of the characters, it’s so hard to pick a favorite. The girl power was strong and there were some swoon worthy guys as well. No spoilers, but I definitely fell in love with multiple men in this book.
Not to mention the plot twists were all so good! And that ending!! I already can’t wait for book 2, I need answers and more of these elementals! This is an amazing debut novel from VB Lacey and I can’t wait to see where this story goes!
DNF @ 52% - I tried so hard to keep going since I’ve had a decent run of DNF books yet this one had the same fate. There were a lot of characters that didn’t offer anything to the plot and didn’t give enough character development to be worthwhile. I could not understand the super shallow romance that felt stiff.
I know what I want to live for, Aidan—that’s always been you. It’s always you. But I want something to die for.
Intriguing premise, but this book was sadly very predictable, with some pretty staggering plot holes.
The romance was also agonizingly repetitive. We get it, ok? Maybe as a 20 year old we should pursue age appropriate love interests and not Rynn, a thousand year old possessive asshole. The only relationship with some merit was Kai and Aidan.
I’m going to be honest, I don’t even know if I can’t find the right words to express how incredible this book is.
When I tell you I was SUCKED IN I literally did nothing else except read this book for two days straight because I could not put it down.
The story line was so captivating and unique, and the writing flows perfectly. This was also one of those books that had me theorizing and guessing what was going to happen like a crazy person. Even after all that I don’t think I would’ve been able to guess the ending (or prepare for it.)
OML, V.B Lacey knows how to write tension and angst. When I tell you the men in this book had me FROTHING. There’s one man in particular who could’ve put me on a leash and I’d bark. Absolutely feral I tell you.
If you’re looking for a book with:
🔥 Tension & Angst
🔥 Elemental Magic
🔥 Morally Gray Characters
🔥 Plot Twists
🔥 A Prophecy
🔥 Forced Proximity
🔥 Witty Banter
🔥 High Stakes
🔥 No Spice Romance
Then this book is without a doubt for you. I loved it and am highly anticipating the sequel to find out what happens next. It’s a must read!
I listened to the audiobook of this book, which has been on my TBR for so long and I am kicking myself for taking so long to pick it up!
This is such an excellent fantasy book, there are hints of romance but nothing stronger than a couple of kisses occurs in this story so far. There is a suggestion of a love triangle, but no real relationship occurs between the FMC and any of the other characters, but there is plenty of delicious tension and slow burn as the story develops.
The story follows Isla who discovers that the elementals, who had been thought of as Gods in their kingdom, have resurfaced after a thousand years. A dark force threatens the peace in the kingdoms, and Isla finds herself dragged into an adventure more incredible than her beloved storybooks.
This plot kept me guessing, and the twists had me in complete shock, and I loved every minute! I can't wait for book two for the conclusion and so many answers!!
Let me start out by saying I loved this book!! Long Live is full of romance, mortals & immortals, elemental magic, morally grey characters, witty banter, plot twists and so much more! Vanessa transports you to a realm where a mysterious and dark force threatens to overtake. There’s ample tension as well as beautiful moments woven throughout the pages that cause you to fall in love with the characters. Isla and the elementals take you on a journey full of twists and turns with an ending that leaves you wanting more! I can’t wait to have a copy sitting on my bookshelf and am beyond excited for its release in August!! 🗡️✨
Long Live had the makings of a sweeping fantasy full of morally grey characters and epic adventures, but unfortunately fell a little flat for me. Nothing really happens for the majority of the book, and we’re all just hanging out in a cave waiting around most of the time. I felt like Bri’s addition to the party wasn’t necessary, and she was more burdensome than not. The last 50 pages were definitely the best part, and I think if the pacing was better I would’ve enjoyed this story more. In conclusion, Long Live would be a great pick for a lot of people, it was just lackluster and boring for me.
Thank you to the author and R&R Book Tours for the free copy.
Long Live
An exciting magical fantasy adventure! The story was a whirlwind of emotions and twists in the story. I loved the multiple POVs and the various characters. My favorites were Aiden and Kai!
Some exciting tropes to look forward when you read are:
- adventure
- multiple POVs
- elemental powers
- prophecy
- chosen one vibes
- a little romance (no spice)
- fierce FMCs
- protective MMCs
- hurt/comfort
- touch her and ☠️ vibes
- band of friends
3 / 5
This had such good potential, I just feel with the multiple POVs (like 5) it was hard to follow. I also felt there was a serious lull in the story in the middle. THe ending was enough to make me pick up book 2.
Long Live is a romantasy book where I like the fantasy parts of it more than its romance. And that’s all a romantasy novel has to accomplish to be in my good book.
There are tons of good stuff in this novel. It has these crazy-ass elementals who have been sleeping for a thousand years and a voice wakes them up because there is trouble stirring in the lands again.
What I was fascinated with was the way V. B. Lacey wrote these elementals. The writing portrays the behavior of what an element should have, a pure element. The fire should be volatile but it could be nurturing as well, water is smooth flowing but could be temperamental as well, Earth is something that is always steady but when angered it could be disastrous, finally Air is ever unpredictable. I could feel all these qualities from the elemental characters while reading.
Our main FMC, Isla, is also great other than her aspect of falling for any handsome guy and showing her some compassion. She is headstrong but vulnerable, she is hurting in the beginning of the book from her mother’s loss but she is healing. I thought her character had great points and some flaws which is how I like my main characters.
Then there is our bad guy, the classic evil king who is after our FMC and the other elementals but we don’t know how, which built up quite a nice mystery, and the mystery element starts in its true form when Isla meets King Sebastian for the first time properly.
There is a prophecy and how I love a prophecy that much cannot be denied and I love how VB lets the characters interpret the prophecy and come to some conclusion, which usually means something else other than the character’s interpretation.
This world of Iona is fascinating, with all its lore about how primordials created these elemental gods to maintain balance in the world, but as time passed these elemental gods became more human, and in the end for the good of all humanity they decided to go back into deep sleep. And now they are awake there is a prophecy, there is a human with a unique bloodline that can determine their death or life.
The end twist was kind of predictable by just looking at how it was set up but it was still worth it to read. So Satisfying!!!
THOUGHTS.
BLOG || INSTAGRAM || TIKTOK
I fear this may have been over hyped to me and I lost a little steam when I was reading it. The second half was really great though and I feel very much inclined to read the conclusion (it’s a duology) to see where everyone ends up.
The insta-love is what frustrated me most. Things went from 0-100 real fast and I don’t think there was enough tension, especially with it being what was supposedly enemies to lovers.
I did like Isla a lot. She was fiercely loyal, willing to learn and train and wanted to help those around her. I found her to be an easy FMC to root for. Even better was the fact it was multiple POV. One of my favorite things. I liked how this gave insight to the world building and the past. The combination of everyone’s motives helped the book along immensely.
The writing was easy to read and I thought flowed well too. I did like the general concept of the story and the plot. There was action and some good twists and enough to keep me invested throughout.
Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy Romance
- Language: low
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of loved ones, small battle scenes
This beautifully written book has everything I look for in a fantasy read - an intriguing world (including elemental magic!), compelling plot, lovable characters, swoon-worthy romance and twists that keep you on your toes. It’s not often that I have no hint of the final twist while reading, but the ending of Long Live managed to shock me in the best way.
This book has multiple POVs, and I enjoyed all the characters so much that it was impossible to put it down. You know when flip to a new chapter and it’s for a character you don’t really care about, so you’re like ok here’s a good stopping point? Well that never happens. This is absolutely a “stay up past your bedtime because you can’t put it down” type of book.
Also, the book balances so many different elements so well - action, adventure, emotional moments, witty banter, love - it’s all there and it’s all good. I absolutely cannot wait for book 2 so I can find out where this story goes next. Do yourself a favor, and READ. THIS. BOOK.
A dazzling debut packed with sensational magic, whimsical characters, and an epic quest!
Lacey’s writing is captivating and compels you turn page after page without realizing where the time went. With multiple POVs, readers will effortlessly fall in love with the characters, and because they’re so unique, readers are likely to find an attribute in each of them that they can relate to. Isla is a spectacular heroine you can’t help but root for, especially toward the end.
Alongside a thrilling adventure, there’s also plenty of romantic tension! On more than one occasion, I had to put the book down and take a breather because I was so giddy. Thank you for that morally grey men!
Long Live is a story that constantly had me on the edge of my seat, and the ending only left me wanting more! With rich worldbuilding, stunning plot twists, distinct characters, powerful magic, and exciting romance, I highly recommend Long Live to new fantasy readers. I cannot wait for book 2 to see what happens after that cliffhanger!
