"Sophie listened and felt sad. Interesting things did seem to happen, but always to somebody else."
"'That's why I love spiders. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again. I keep trying,' he said with a great sadness."
"Sophie's experience told her that tantrums are seldom about the thing they appear to be about."
"'Sophie, are you still not talking to me?" he asked miserably."
"'Sophie!' he shouted. 'Quickly! What are we going to sell in that shop?'"
"'Well, he's fickle, careless, selfish, and hysterical,' she said. 'Half the time I think he doesn't care what happens to anyone as long as he's all right--but then I find out how awfully kind he's been to someone. Then I think he's kind just when it suits him. ...'"
"Then she had suddenly been afraid she was just like Sophie: old, with no reason, and nothing to show for it."
"'Sophie!' Howl said in his most laughing, pleading way."
"'...I came to the conclusion that you liked being in disguise.'"
"'Sophie, are you still not talking to me?" he asked miserably."
"'I can't stay,' he said. 'I've got to rescue that fool Sophie.'"
