“Everyone thought it was hilarious. Look how crazy she is! Even my parents acted embarrassed by me. But nobody seemed to understand that I was simply out of my mind with grief. My children had been taken away from me. With my head shaved, everyone was scared of me, even my mom. No one would talk to me anymore because I was I was too ugly. My long hair was a big part of what people liked – I knew that. I knew a lot of guys thought long hair was hot… shaving my head was a way of saying to the world: Fuck you. You want me to be pretty for you? Fuck you. You want me to be good for you? Fuck you. You want me to be your dream girl? Fuck you.”

“Camus, I don’t want to keep playing this game of hide and seek knowing I’m going to lose. If I go down, I go down in flames. Fighting.”

“Slaveholders have no rights more than any other thief or pirate. They have forfeited even the right to live, and if the slave should put every one of them to the sword tomorrow, who dare pronounce the penalty disproportioned to the crime or say that the criminals deserved less than death at the hands of their long-abused chattels? (The North Star, Volume II, #7 February 9, 1849)”

“I know there is a spirit among the slaves which would not much longer brook their degradation and their bondage. There are many Madison Washingtons and Nathaniel Turners in the South, who would assert their rights to liberty if you would take your feet from their necks and your sympathy and aid from their oppressors. (The Slaves Right to Revolt: An Address Delivered In Boston, Massachusetts, on 30 May 1848, Liberator June 9 1848)”

“Adolescence shows us that the most interesting part of the brain evolved to be shaped minimally by genes and maximally by experience; that’s how we learn –context, context, context.”

“We are sometimes asked in the name of patriotism to forget the merits of this fearful struggle [the Civil War], and to remember with equal admiration those who struck at the nation’s life, and those who struck to save it—those who fought for slavery, and those who fought for liberty and justice.
I am no minister of malice. I would not strike the fallen. I would not repel the repentant, but may my right hand forget its cunning, and my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I forget the difference between the parties to that terrible, protracted and bloody conflict.”

“It was not imprisonment, supposedly, but simply that all Manchus needed special protection because they were related to the royal house and so were part of officialdom. Actually it was a luxurious imprisonment, for this was the Chinese way of conquering enemies. When the Manchu invasion of 1644 was successful in a military sense-and almost any people could invade China successfully, it seemed, in a military sense-China did not resist. The people were apparently passive, mildly curious, and even courteous to their conquerors. The real struggle came afterwards, but so subtly that the conquerors never knew they were being conquered. The technique of victory was that as soon as the invaders laid down their arms the philosophical but intensely practical Chinese persuaded them to move into palaces and begin to enjoy themselves. The more the new rulers ate and drink, the better pleased the Chinese were, and if they also learned to enjoy gambling and opium and many wives, so much the better. One would have thought that the Chinese were delighted to be invaded and conquered. On the pretext of increased comfort, the Manchus were persuaded to live in especially pleasant part of any city, and to be protected by special guards against rebellious citizens. This meant they were segregated and since they were encouraged to do no work, the actual and tedious details of the government were assumed performed by the chinese, ostensibly for them. The result of this life of idleness and luxury was that the Manchus generally became a fit while the Chinese administered the government. The Manchus were like pet cats and the Chinese kept them so, knowing that when the degeneration was complete, a Chinese revolutionary would overthrow the rotten structure. Revolution was in the Chinese tradition and every dynasty was overthrown, if not by foreign invasion, then by native revolution”

“I found my identity in refuting the standards that society tried to impose on me. I refused to concede to anyone else’s standard of good and evil, even if their constructs were rational and mine were not. Relativizing good and evil allowed me to dismiss any concept of a moral code. Dismissing the moral code did not get rid of my inward compass that told me when one thing was wrong and another was right, but it did allow me to mock others’ concepts of right and wrong in preference to my own.”

“Perhaps the police could have shown me more mercy, but their brash confrontation of my rebellion taught me something just as important: the world did not revolve around me. No matter how badly I wanted everything to benefit me and work out in my favor the world did not revolve around, nor conform to, my every fleeting fancy.”

“With His arms wrapped around me, I knew He was not willing to let me go. Undeserving and stubborn as I was, His love was greater than my rebellion, greater than my brokenness, greater than my hurt or hatred.”

“If He saw me at my very worst, when drugs, sex, and other fleeting pleasures ruled every portion of my heart, mind, and life, and still chose to die for me, He must still love me now. If He was patient with me when I was living solely for rebellion, He must also be willing to be patient with me now that my heart was softening and I was actually trying. I was still failing, but at least my heart wanted to honor Him now.”

“It was the story of a handful of children who were told to die, and refused. They were told that others deserved to eat, not them, and they fought back. They wanted to live. And we thought, if seven children could lead a rebellion…if they could risk everything for the chance of freedom, then so could we.

“You know, Aerosmith will be the thing that kills off your music. Not them directly, mind you. What they represent. Bands are going to sell out. Whatever you think is rebellious now will be used to sell you laxatives in a decade. You'll all get old and conservative. Your Saint Cobain put it well: 'Teenage angst has paid off well. Now I'm bored and old.' It's all about money. You'll get that. You think you are edgy now, but I've seen people like you start to lose their hair and then lose their minds.”

“I felt I had the right to not be a trustworthy person. It was good to make that clear, even if it worked against my professional future; from now on you should be aware that assigning me a job includes the possibility that I’ll quit halfway through. That was more or less how I put it. It was the closest I would come in this business to an outburst of dignity.”

“Baron Danthe watched her as she stared up at it. “I do thank you for alerting me.”
“I was alerting the Emperor.”
“Of course.” Danthe chuckled. “Such a life we lead. Did you ever think that stabbing people in the back would be a way to get ahead?”
“It’s the way the game is played,” Sloane said, a little surprised at his openness. “I prefer flying my starship.”
“And defending the Empire against – whatever.” He grinned. “Have you learned any more about the others that were involved?”
“Nothing.”
He gave a derisive sniff. “I don’t think we need worry too much. A single rebellious act isn’t the start of anything. This was a blip. A glitch in the system. Nothing more.”
“Maybe.” Or maybe they’d awakened a sleeping gundark.
Sloane decided there would be opportunities for advancement in a galaxy like that, too.

“If a person relies too much on authority outside of themselves, it is very easy to lose yourself in that routine. That routine ‘in time’ becomes unconscious and those unconscious beliefs become invisible to the self. These unconscious beliefs then create bridges to a certain kind of understanding, but they also block you from perceiving other possibilities. If that external authority and those unconscious beliefs are never examined, then we can become imprisoned within cages that were created by others.”

“Fuck duty." It was a sentiment she had carried for years, but it had a different flavor in her mouth now, tinged not with adolescent rebellion but with weary disillusionment. What good was something like duty when it amounted to little more than unchallenged obedience?”

“The past is our always-available counterculture, and it's a rich one. Every minute you spend attending to something not-immediately-present, you are helping to build a counterculture.”

“Weekend Wildlife by Stewart Stafford
Praying mantis tapped out code,
On waste ground down the road,
Legs, wings and antennae spread,
A walrus mugged a pensioner in bed.
A chameleon joined in the mêlée,
Effortlessly cool, a saurian Pelé,
Mimicking every backdrop around,
Eyeballs akimbo, tongue on ground.
Then a herd of Ibex from Iberia,
A yak stampede from frigid Siberia,
Bomber squadrons of high Cockatoos,
As the rest liberated the nearest zoos.

“The Silence Game"
Many have understood the game
and chose to remain silent…
They chose silence thinking
that their silence will save them…
Yet silence killed them through heart attacks,
without even giving them a chance
to scream at least one last time
to inform the world that
silence is much more costly
than resistance…

“Tú me has fallado, me has decepcionado. Creí encontrar una huerfanita ansiosa de cariño y he visto un demonio de rebeldía, un ser que se ponía rígido si yo lo acariciaba. Tú has sido mi última ilusión y mi último desengaño, hija. Sólo me resta rezar por ti, que ¡bien lo necesitas!”

“Bail, it’s the only way. It’s the only hope you have of remaining in a position to do anyone any good. Vote for Palpatine. Vote for the Empire. Make Mon Mothma vote for him, too. Be good little Senators. Mind your manners and keep your heads down. And keep doing… all those things we can’t talk about. All those things I can’t know. Promise me, Bail.”
