This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Neal Shusterman's books have almost always had something in them to make me think that this could be a really weird and warped version of the world we live in. He is really good at taking a what if scenario and pushing it to an extreme. All Better Now is the first book in a continuing, yet to be named series, covering another pandemic. Only the after effects of this illness leave you changed forever. If you survive Crown Royale, you become Happy. I'm going to just throw out there that I don't know that I would have read another book about a pandemic by most authors. I feel a little PTSD anytime someone brings up the last one or the prospect of another. No matter who you are, I think it impacted your life in some way and society as a whole in a big ways. But, my experience with the last Pandemic made this book feel all the more plausible and added to the foundations for emotional impact I think is needed for this story to really work for reader to connect to it. Told from multiple PoVs we follow different characters as some try to share the illness so all can feel what it is like to have things like fear, ambition, hatred and selfishness fall away from them. Others are desperate to thwart the virus that is causing Billionaires to give up their wealth, consumers to stop buying new goods when the old ones are just fine and people who would rather take a bullet than shoot one. We get glimpses into the lives of those who have recovered and how their lives changed. Others that live in isolation and desperation to make sure they never get the virus, afraid of how it could change them. I was captivated by this story. The characters all have different motivations, everyone thinks they are doing the right thing and most have good intentions. Mariel lost her mother to the virus but never got it herself. She and Rón, a recovery, are traveling across the country trying to find a new purpose in their lives and hide Rón from his father. Rón has a mission and no time to be locked away for his safety. The question is will Rón's mission drive a wedge between him and the girl he has come to love. Morgan is everything that the recovered are not. She is conniving, driven, cruel and willing to do just about anything to win. Because of someone's need to pass on a legacy, she is also in control of a large amount of money, companies and a research center. Her goal is to combat the Crown Royale virus, but the cure might be worse than the disease. He and Morgan were alike, in a way. Both had powerful, all-consuming agendas. But that was where the similarity ended -- because, while Rón was motivated to fix a broken world, Morgan was motivated to take credit for fixing a broken world. A subtle difference, with miles between. I enjoyed this book so much. Because of the multiple PoVs I found that the story moved along fast and it was interesting to see into the minds of all of the major players in the book. Neal Shusterman's writing is always great with solid one liners and things to make the reader ponder. I look forward to seeing where he takes the story as I think this will be on par with two of my series Unwind and Arc of the Scythe. The beauty of disinformation was that the more outlandish it was, them more people would believe it, because it was fed by the public's own paranoia....more |

All for the Entertainment Stars Welcome back to Ivy House and it's magical yet eccentric staff and new mistress. Jesinta is still training and trying All for the Entertainment Stars Welcome back to Ivy House and it's magical yet eccentric staff and new mistress. Jesinta is still training and trying to learn all the new power she has inherited from the house, but she has a new problem. Her parents are coming to visit and she wants to keep her magic under wraps and not tell them. That becomes increasingly difficult as they are completely underfoot and Ivy House is messing with them to see how many things it can do that they will try to explain away. It also seems that someone has figured out a way to sneak onto Ivy House's grounds without Jessie knowing and that is a problem that needs to be fixed too. This is a really fun series so far. I'm not going to say that the plot is the best, because well it isn't. But, I haven't cared as all the weird is just so funny. Jessie's rag tag crew is hilarious as they try to serve her. I especially like Mr. Thom's and Jessie's mom casually fighting over trying to do things around the house to take care of Jessie. The big bad this time seems to be coming from two fronts and every time Jessie is tested she learns something and steps up to the plate to protect the people who have come to serve her and Ivy House. It is a bit formulaic but that has not diminished the fun I'm having reading this series. [image] The romance has been slow burning. We all can tell that she and Austin will eventually figure out they are meant to be together and finally let all those little sparks ignite. But for now we get the flirting, the sweet statements, the confidence building they both provide to each other and a few steamy kisses. I don't think it will be much longer that the reader will need to wait, especially since the next book of the series is Magical Midlife Love. The slow burn journey has been a nice change from the insta-love of some of the other books I'm reading. “None of us are fully comfortable with ourselves—there are always going to be things you don’t like. Ghosts and insecurities, dark places. The trick is finding someone who is as comfortable with your dark side as you are with theirs. The trick is not to change someone to fit you, but to find someone with whom you don’t have to change.” Overall, I use these books as palette cleansers after some intense reads. In that way they are absolutely perfect. Light, enjoyable with just a little bit of tension in both the romantic and enemies at the gates of Ivy House areas. ...more |

Jenny Elder Moke is a new to me author. I really enjoyed the main character, Kate and how messed up she was in a cute way. The murder mystery on an private Island during a wedding weekend was engaging and I had a hard time putting this book down. Kate is a writer who spends a lot of time in her own head, or more accurately in the head of one of her characters from the mystery books she writes. It becomes even easier for her to get lost in that fantasy life when at the wedding of her former fiancé, on a historic private Island, one of the attendees turns up dead. Kate is off to try and solve the mystery, since someone seems to be using plots from her books for the murder. To add to the chaos, Jake (not Blake from her books) is also at the wedding and someone has put him as Kate's plus one. Kate may have harbored a huge crush on the adventurer she helped co-write books for, but does he also have those kinds of feelings for Kate? This book has a few ridiculous moments, that I found hilarious, but humor is really subjective so this book is either going to really work for you or not. As various calamities plague the house, a storm also approaches and traps everyone one the Island in a house with intermittent power, at least one dead body and a so many taxidermized animals anyone might feel uncomfortable. There are also a long list of suspects who all have some kind of motive to kill. "So, I’ve learned to embrace the chaos.” I really liked Kate and her, I can be just like Jessica Fletcher and find the killer, attitude. With her can do attitude and slightly itchy thinking sweater she is off to solve the crime(s). The mystery of who is trying to possibly kill the bride and definitely killed another guest was interesting and fun with some false leads and twists. But the will they/won't they tension between Jake and Kate was what I was really into. While you are pretty sure they are meant to be, I enjoyed the journey and revelations along the way. The mystery was fun, the humor was great and the romance was swoony. This book made me want to look into the authors catalog and see if there was anything else I could pick up. “I’ve waited years for this,” he said, his breath warming the inner shell of her ear. “And I’m going to take my time. Every last minute of it, Kate. Until neither of us can stand up again.”...more |

This is the first book in The Great Silence Trilogy , set in the same world as The Empire of the Wolf, two hundred years after the events of that trilogy. I didn't have any trouble following the story and do not think you need to read the first series to enjoy this one. Our story is unfurled as we follow the lives an inner thoughts of three characters Renata, Peter and Von Oldenburg. Renata, an ambassador to the mermen, is considered a joke by her peers. Most of her training has been theory up to this point. That is about to change when she is tasked to go to them for their expertise in the arcane to see if they can assist in thwarting a prophecy called The Great Silence. Peter, an officer on caught in a war, is on the front and back lines. He doesn't seem to have any contact with the known enemy he thought he'd be fighting. Instead, there is a different enemy, one that screams in the night and follows them like ghosts in the dark. Von Oldenburg is the villain we can see in this tale. He has studied death magics and is on a course of discovery that is truly horrifying. Renata's PoV focuses on her traveling through a war torn country with a delegation, trying to get to the mermen before her country loses access and lives. She was a character that was easy to like in her quest to do what she had trained for most of her career. The journey is fraught with danger and some harsh revelations about some of the people she has trusted. I especially enjoyed the lore and interactions with the mermen. The mermen are far from the enchanting creatures of Disney. They are a vicious, cold-blooded culture, as harsh as their aquatic domain, riding sharks with a chilling ferocity. Peter's journey as a soldier in a jungle atmosphere was so engaging. Trying to figure out what is going on at night when the screams come. Is he crazy, why are others acting like nothing is going on? I loved how he is not a born hero, he has questions, fears and is just trying to do his best to lead his men and not get everyone killed as they go up against something unknown in the dark. He is human is a place full of new horrors and acts accordingly. Perversely, he was so frozen in place with fear that to an observer it looked as though he were standing his ground with great stoicism. As I read Von Oldenburg's PoV I became more and more convinced of how evil he could be. He seemed morally ambiguous in the beginning but, his journey takes us to the depths of how far he will go for his own ego and how dangerous he could be in this world. "You are a fool if you think word has not spread already. There are demons in hell who envy your reputation." There are great characters in the story with complex feelings, motivations and depths. I enjoyed getting to know all of them as they exposed the origin of The Great Silence and what it means to the Empire. The horror aspects of the story fit in so well and floored me sometimes. Like most first books in a new fantasy series, it starts off a little slow and build and builds until all of the tension of the final chapters is lived through. The conclusion leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment with a satisfying yet tantalizing end. I enjoyed the teasers at the end of the book as they opened up the mind to think about various possibilities before we get to the next book in the series. This is great for epic and grimdark fantasy readers and maybe even those who enjoy horror but wanted to try out fantasy. ...more |

I have very conflicted feelings about this book. One one hand the overall story is really good. There is a great tradition and history to Kaigen that I loved learning about. The main characters were complex and showed so much growth I wasn't expecting. For those reasons I would recommend this book. “Wholeness, she had learned, was not the absence of pain but the ability to hold it.” The Sword of Kaigen reminded me of a Samurai type culture with the addition of some magic. The families that live there have a long tradition of fighting for the Empire against it's enemies. They are the wall the enemy crashes against and have held back the tides of war for a long time. So long that most have forgotten the power of the families there. Misaki, was once a fighter when she was away at school. She loved it, was great at it and gave it up to be a wife and have a family. She married Takashi, one of the greatest swordmasters of all time, who can make a blade of ice sharper than and man made blade. When we first meet her she is unhappy and a shadow of the woman she could be. The reader follows her on her journey to reclaim the power she set down and find a path to a kind of happiness that walks through so many tragedies. This was a hard read for me. The Ranganese invade Kaigen and the atrocities are what you would expect in an invasion. It was so heavy and sad and places that multiple times I set down the book and didn't pick it back up for a few days to clear my head. There are so many losses and some hit extremely hard, that I wasn't sure I wanted to continue. I will give it to M.L. Wang that she created characters I really cared about and that made the happenings in the invasion and after all the harder on my summer heart. “I know you might feel broken, but we’re jijakalu. We’re water, and water can shift to fit any mold. No matter how we’re broken and reshaped, we can always freeze ourselves strong again. It’s not going to happen all at once,” she added. “You have to wait for the turn of the season to see what shape the ice will take, but it will form up, clear and strong. It always does.” Wang made characters with holes and bad judgement. I was rooting for Misaki to find the warrior she once was and I was not disappointed. Wang also made me care and forgive characters that I didn't think I would. Like most relationship issues there are two sides and no one carries all of the blame. I didn't think I'd come to like Takeru but in the end I loved his character arc. Sometimes you just need a good fight with your spouse to clear the air. “The Whispering Blade met Misaki’s obsidian sheath and sheared through it. Her eyes went wide, and she smiled—Gods in the Deep, she smiled —a raw, open smile, and it was the most beautiful thing in all the Duna.” My small issues with the story came after the main battle, the pacing was off and there was a bunch of stuff thrown in about Misaki's past acquaintances/crime fighters and what they are doing now. It seemed like maybe there were other books set in this world that the reader should have been familiar with to understand her past and those characters. I really didn't see any though so it was just some fluff that didn't seem to need to be there. I think Misaki's closure with her past could have flowed a lot better, but my heart was rang out by that point so I might be a little to critical here. Overall, if you want a story with some bite and can handle the ravages of an invasion this is going to be a great story for you. Filled with character depth and steeped in lore and culture so much of the story was fantastic if brutal. Narration: I'm so glad I listened to this book. There are so many Japanese type words and phrases that it was more enjoyable to have someone else decipher them for me. Andrew Tell was fantastic as a narrator. He captured every emotion, every horror and every tenderness so well. He was a new to me narrator but I could see easily why he has over 200 titles to his portfolio. His pacing, emotion and character separation were fantastic. Performance: ★★★★★ Character Separation: ★★★★★ Diction: ★★★★★ Pacing/Flow: ★★★★★ Sound Effects: limited at the introduction ...more |

Prater and her catalog of books with broken characters and worlds brushed lightly with magic and mysticism. This Haunted Heart's main characters are both broken by their shared past and the choices made that destroyed them for the last twenty years they spent apart. This second chance romance with ghosts from the past is full of tender moments and unusual events as the tale of Rynn and Finley is laid bare for the reader. Rynn's choices and shame led her to a life as a lady of the night. Finley led a life of loneliness, thinking the girl he loved was dead. It is twenty years later and in his anger, grief and sense of betrayal he has a plan to make Rynn pay. One problem, the more he talks to her, the more time he spends with her, the less he wants revenge and the more he just wants her. “After all I’ve done, you still want me terribly. I bet you hate that, don’t you?” Finley has made something of himself since the death of his adoptive Duke of a Father. He has the perfect house, one he built for the memory of a girl he thought long dead. When he finds she is not in fact dead, but alive and well he comes up with a plan to lock her away in it. Sure it isn't exactly rational, but I was pulling for Finley the entire time. Everyone's secrets will be revealed and teased out as the reader discovers Finley and Rynn's history, along with what makes the house so special. Personally I love broken and scarred characters. Both Finley and Rynn are extremely scarred in different ways. Finley wears his scars on the outside while Rynn's are emotional and some self inflicted. As they dealt with their past and their present, I fell a little in love with the two characters. Sure Finley kinda kidnaps Rynn, but I was all for it knowing they had a past and what they meant to each other at one time. The haunted house also added to the ambiance of the story and the ghosts that Finley and Rynn needed to exercise from their pasts. For me this was exactly the kind of second chance romance I like, with a nice side of paranormal activity. Characters that both needed to be forgiven and find a way to release the past to find a future. Great cotton candy kind of read. “I should have known you were the devil,” she muttered. “Lucifer is always beautiful. I should have known it the second I laid eyes on you."...more |

The Wayward Children series a collection of novellas surrounding kids who didn't quite fit into their worlds or their families that at some point in time go through a door to another world. But the thing about doors is sometimes they appear again when you aren't paying attention and you go through them again. When that happens you may end up at the School for Wayward Children where you wait with others, hoping to find your door home again. Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear is one such story. Nadya was orphaned write after her birth and was great at helping to take care of all the children at the orphanage where she lived. She didn't mind she was missing half an arm. She got along just fine without it and even if it bothered some it didn't bother her. She was adopted by an American Christian couple and came to live her life in America. It was there she learned not everyone saw her arm the same way. Nadya found the door when she was sad about the family who adopted her and wanted her to wear a prosthetic arm. She never doubted herself until that day and while looking at the turtles she so loved to visit she ended up in a water world. She spent almost a decade there, with a tortoise to call her own and a boy who became her husband. This is the story of those adventures and the wonderful times she had exploring the world of Belyrreka until a day that brought her back. I really liked Nadya and her kind heart and way of taking care of those around her. Seanan McGuire does such a great job with all the worlds people end up in and how interesting and different they are from one another. She is incredibly imaginative bringing the world and characters in it to life in a short period of time. I knew Nadya would end back up in our world since I saw her at the school and we get a brief introduction to her. But I was sad all the same when she ended up on this side of the door again. As most of these books, they are self contained stories that don't have to be read in order to understand what is happening, however it does help. I still suggest reading them in order to get the full impact. Narration: Barrie Kreinik did really well at capturing the atmosphere of the story. Her Russian accent for Nadya and some of the river folk in Belyrreka worked really well. I enjoyed her performance and how well she was able to make me care for Nadya so much in just a short period of time. There isn't a central romance really between the two characters talking and so it should be depressing, but somehow it comes out hopeful and healing. Alice lost her husband to a heart attack and now only has a grave to visit. As she is standing there to visit him on his birthday having a slight emotional breakdown, she looks up to see Kermit the Frog, or at least a man dressed like him. Ben lost his brother, who is buried in the grave next to Alice's husband. Because Ben's brother was a pretty big jokester, it is in the will that Ben show up to the grave one day out of the year dressed in a costume that Ben has planned out. Much to Ben's humiliation but Harry is probably having a great time of it looking down from on high. Alice and Ben really have nothing in common, other than the fact they have both lost someone very close to them recently. In a strange way, they can open up to each other in ways they haven't been able to with other people. For the next ten years, they meet at the graves of their loved ones, Ben in some silly costumes and Alice wearing her grief. They talk about the previous year and help each other set challenges for the next one. I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. There is no romantic connection between Alice and Ben but they form a bond and become family. Each helps the other overcome some of the things in their lives that are holding them back from really moving on and living. Their conversations had a sweet amount of humor to them to offset the sorrow and I found myself connecting to both characters hoping they would find ways to move on with their lives. Overall this was solid story that I think anyone who has lost someone close to them before their time can possibly relate to. I enjoyed how different it was from all of my normal reading habits. “The barriers we think are a foot thick are sometimes paper-thin to the people who know us.” Narration: I am a HUGE fan of Steve West and love his voice, that was the main reason I requested this book. His voice fit Ben so well and really helped me connect with him. The slight accent, the tone of his voice, the cadence of his speech just work for me. His voice melts me like butter on toast. Imogen Church is also a very accomplished narrator with a prolific catalogue. she did great conceiving Alice's emotions and vulnerabilities. I really connected with Alice and I'm sure more of that was because of Imogen's performance. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed. When some cute handmade ornaments start showing up on her door she is on a mission to figure out who they are from to thank them. But for now she needs to focus and get all of her drawings in on time, so it would help if she could stop thinking about her sexy handyman neighbor who sometimes fixes things for her. At the building Christmas party she might just get a chance for him to see her in something that isn’t her comfort clothing while she is on deadline. I liked Evie and her drooling over a nice guy who lives upstairs and I was pulling for her to finally make a move. Hot fireman to Thank you to Brilliance publishing and Netgalley for the Audio. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Hot fireman to the rescue…um yes, please. Everleigh Dangerfield is living up to her name and accidentally set the kitchen on fire while trying to bake some cookies. She is determined to do the things she used to with her grandmother as a way of saying goodbye to her. The only problem, some of the stuff in the house is a little old and temperamental, hence the fire. Griffen is a little smitten at first sight after showing up to assist in putting out the fire, but Everliegh is leaving soon and isn’t looking for anything. What ensues are a few funny situational moments that involve needing to be rescued and Griffen being just the man for the job. This was really cute, even if it was fast. I really liked the story but would have loved a small epilogue to the end as it cute off pretty fast. Narration: Amelie Griffin captured the fun of this book. She made the situational moments funny and Everliegh’s inner dialogue a lot of fun. She even did well on Griffin’s voice making him seem a little dreamy too. ...more |

Quick Pre-Chri Thank you to Brilliance publishing and Netgalley for the Audio. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Quick Pre-Christmas Read This was my favorite story out of the collection. Marc was Jamie’s best friends brother growing up. He had a huge crush on her and she always liked him but they have some history. Trapped together in a snow story before Christmas, the reader will get some insights into their pasts and when and how everything went wrong. This was a cute second chance friends to lovers story that I really bought into because of their history. This was also my first Ali Hazelwood book but it made me interested to see what her other stories that are STEM based romances might look like. Narration: Vivienne LaRue did a fantastic job at capturing both Jamie and Marc’s voice and really making me care about the characters. She brought the story home for me and I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed ...more |

Like most historical romance, it is not necessary that you read the prior books to be able to follow this story, however I would recommended that you read When a Rogue Meets his Match as there are some overarching arcs with an evil uncle that may make the book more enjoyable. Julian Greycourt is the heir to the Greycourt family estate and will inherit when his uncle dies, that is if he can stay alive longer than his uncle that is. Someone seems to want to kill him or ruin him and Julian has a huge secret that if found out could disgrace him from society. He is looking for an edge against his Uncle and on a tip from a servant, goes looking for a book his mother wrote in before she died. Elsbeth is also looking for a book, except hers has the original history of the wise women she was a part of. The ruling council of the wise women has shut them down from helping women outside their community but Elsbeth is sure if she can find the founding documents she can help restore it to what it was always meant to be. The one issue is that it is rumored to be in one of the Greycourt's libraries. When she and Julian end up at his estate outside London, stuck due to weather, sparks fly between them. Elsbeth gets Julian in a way no other woman has seemed to. She is everything he is not, bright, cheery, full of inquisitiveness and not at all shy about exploring whatever is happening between them. Julian has never felt accepted but the woman who infuriates him one minute, gets him on such a deep level he isn't sure how he is going to find a way keep her. I liked this story. The uncle is awful but the siblings who lost their sister and parents years ago are finally forging a family together and trying to protect one another the best they can. Julian's secret while shameful to society was unusual and interesting in a Historical Romance novel and a nice little change up from what we normally see. I liked Elsbeth and the way her mind worked. It was so much fun reading her interactions with Julian and she brought out the best in him. The conclusion to this book was extremely satisfying. I liked how both Julian and Elsbeth protected each other in their own ways and the lessons that Elsbeth learned about herself in this. "One can live without books. Birds live, Cats live. Even the best of dogs live. But only humans can soar on the words from a book. Stories fling us high into the clouds with imagination. Poems make hearts weep with emotion. Science stuns the mind with wonder." She let her hands fall to her lap. "Without the stimulation of literature, you can live, yes. But your soul will be earthbound. A clod without imagination."...more |

Full Speed to a Crash Landing ✩✩✩½ How to Steal a Galaxy ✩✩✩✩✩ This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart Review copy was received from Net Full Speed to a Crash Landing ✩✩✩½ How to Steal a Galaxy ✩✩✩✩✩ This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. How to Steal a Galaxy is the second book in the Chaotic Orbits series featuring an unscrupulous Heroine who is always on a grift of some kind and this time she has agreed to go to a gala, steal something and make contact with Rian her crush, flirtation and the man she got one over on in the first book of the series. Ada is fun! I wasn't sure how to take her in Full Speed to a Crash Landing but now that we all know what she is capable of, I was ready for the ride. Ada is on a mission and while she'd like to say it was for altruism to save Earth, the original one, not the spin offs, well that isn't the case. She took the job for money...and the chance to see Rian again. Ada's infatuation with him is cute and sometimes a little steamy in the PG-13 kind of way. Their interactions are worth reading the book, he knows she is trouble and up to something but he is struggling trying to figure out what it might be. It’s amazing how people just keep going. Supervolcanoes, climate collapse, global pandemics, dissolution of society . . . and there are still farms in Indiana raising wholesome young women who grow up to work as double agents and look hot in red gowns. Rian has great intentions, but he works for the government and Ada is sure they can't be trusted. She and Rian might even have the same end goals but Ada's path is far different from the straight one Rian was planning on following. What follows was a fun, what is she up to fancy heist to set the stage for the final book in the series. How to Steal a Galaxy seemed like it had a slightly better flow than the first book in the series and made sure we learned a little more about both characters and their backstories. This made Ada much more relatable and helped to understand her actions. Overall this has been a fun sci-fi heist series. Each of the books is a novella in length which makes it a quick fun ride that is action packed. Looking forward to seeing how everything plays out in the final book. Especially after Ada's intentions were revealed at the end of this book. It should be fun. And I think Beth Revis put it best in the acknowledgements. I threw everything I loved into it: heists and chaos and pretty dresses and saying the inside thoughts out loud and a little bit of social commentary and a little more chaos for fun....more |

It is 3 am and in a Victorian Mansion on the coast of Maine the ghosts are walking. A woman jumps from the widow's walk casting her curse, a bride dies It is 3 am and in a Victorian Mansion on the coast of Maine the ghosts are walking. A woman jumps from the widow's walk casting her curse, a bride dies in a bedroom giving birth, another in ballroom and more in other rooms of the house. Sonya has gotten used to living with ghosts, she even likes most of them, but it is her job to break a curse going back generations that has claimed the lives of seven Poole brides. She is the only one with the blood needed to be able to stop the witch ghost of Dobb's before Sonya herself becomes another victim. I enjoyed Inheritance last year when we got to know Sonya and some of the ghosts living in the manor with her. As she found a new man to love and set up her life with her best friend Cleo we explored the rich history of the manse and all of the baggage that comes with it. The Mirror picks up right where Inheritance left off with Sonya and Cleo about to do the impossible and walk into a mirror and the past. I enjoyed the Mirror, we still explored some of the bride stories of the past and got to feel some of the fun of living with a house full of spirits. This book was far more character driven than the last as we work our way through the brides deaths in the past to learn more of their stories and how Dobbs is keeping a hold on the Manor. There are a few tense moments and some great personal and professional ones for Sonya that I enjoyed living through with her. But, it reads like a southern gothic meandering along the way leisurely until we get to where we are going at the end. [image] There is one more book in this series and The Mirror is setting the stage for that well. It will be interesting to see if and how Sonya will be able to get the best of the ghost of a witch in her house and what will happen to the rest of the ghosts trapped there if she does. A little romance, some cooking explorations, a get back at the ex moment and some pet fun all wrapped up inside. Narration: Brittany Presley is a well established narrator who killed it with her performance in this book. She continues her narration from the first book and matches the character voices well. She was able to really bring the fun of Sonya and Cleo's friendship out and is able to capture the voice and tone of the story well. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed. I read the prequel to this series when it was free on the author's website and loved the idea of a series that went out of its way to break some of the common classic fantasy tropes. For instance the Captain of the Iron Rose, might be swash buckling but he is a green goblin and only a swamy five foot tall. While I do highly recommend reading A Matter of Execution, it isn't necessary to join our goblin captain and crew on this adventure. [image] William Blair now is a beloved captain of the Iron Rose and her eclectic crew. All of them have a past of some kind, but when you come onboard the Iron Rose, you leave that life behind and you have a chance at a new found family and possibly redemption of a sort. Sailing the skies in a privateering ship Captain Blair and his crew take questionable jobs to make ends meet. Think a little bit Firefly, if it was all on one planet and the crew consisted of a Faery navigator, a granny type that is a hell of a shot, an engineer obsessed with keeping a tea set in one piece and a sixteen year old brought up on mystery novels ready to run cons and outmaneuver the adults. They sail the skies from port to port but this new job might just get everyone on the Iron Rose killed and Captain Blair could be in over his head. “Miss Hawkins,” I said, “I am used to being the biggest troublemaker in town. I’m not certain I like the suggestion that you’re about to outdo me.” This is a world where the mortals were used to fight a war for the Seelie against the Unseelie breaching through into this world. Twenty years ago that war was brought to a halt when a rebellion broke out and the Imperium was destroyed. The members aboard Captain Blair's ship are from all sides of that conflict and have found a peace and a way to coexist. The story is told mostly from Captain Blair's PoV in present and past as we learn how that fateful day 20 years ago ruined the Imperium. Years later and there is evidence the Unseelie have breached into this world. Captain Blair will revisit some of the atrocities the Imperium committed and find a way to keep the Imperium from returning from the ashes to conscript the unwilling into a new war. I had a great time with this story. I like that all the characters in the ship are different and have interesting character development to make them three dimensional. Syrene is Fae and I think the author did a fantastic job of showing us how 'other' she is; in her demeaner, her emotions, the way she moved and her appearance. I enjoyed the worldbuilding as well and how aether powers ships and can be harnessed as a weapon too. The fights and flights were entertaining and nail biting at times, without going on so long that I lost focus. Overall I am enjoying this series and how much fun the authors seem to be having with it. I recommend it to people who enjoyed Firefly, Treasure planet and the new Star Wars movies. “Everything matters, Wil,” Evie told me. “But I don’t think penance is about fixing things. I think… it’s about…” There was a strange conviction in his dark eyes now, though he struggled to find the words to convey what he was thinking. “It’s about becoming the sort of person who would never make that mistake again. It’s about caring so much that you have to fix all of the little cruelties that you can. Until it’s the most natural thing in the world to you.”...more |

Hell of a Witch, the second book of the Tear Down Heaven series, picks up a month after the event in Hell for Hire. It has a slow burn romance, underdog fight against the big bad and a found family that is amazing. The Queen of Wrath is out to thwart the Princes of Heaven and while you might think we would be on the Prince’s side we definitely are not since they, and their master, took over heaven millennia ago and our Heroine is trying to save her people, rescue her sisters and take down the wizard that tore down heaven. Bex, Demon Queen of Wrath, finally has enough allies to try and do something big in the resistance against Gilgamesh. Adrian has come up with a plan to deal a devastating blow to the all powerful wizard. With some of the coolest witchy tricks I’ve read about, he and Bex sneak into the heart of enemy territory to see what they can learn about one of the anchors to Heaven. However, when things don’t go quite right it puts a huge strain on their budding relationship. Bex must make some difficult choices between being a Queen and head of a rebellion or the personal wants she has in her life. It doesn’t help that her ring/sword, Drox, is talking in her head and only cares about fighting. Rachel Aaron has come up with a fantastically interesting and original world, with a extraordinary backstory. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like this and love the world she has created. Hell of a Witch is more action packed and faster paced than Hell for Hire and also sprinkles in more worldbuilding and backstory to flesh out the characters and the world. I enjoyed how the reader is fed some of the information and shown some of the concepts that help make this story feel like a real place. Bex and Adrian both shine in this book, but Adrian stole the show a little with his potential parentage reveal and new dealings with a pretty powerful crow. I love found families and Bex has a great one with the core group of demons who follow her. Nemini, a void demon, is hilarious to me when she is one the page. Her quips and dialogue remind me of the sad robot in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Having a lust demon and a war demon on your side doesn’t hurt either. They didn’t quite as much page time as Adrian and his feline familiar were the stars of the book. But they brought some good comic relief and badass fighting skills to the story. Overall this is an entertaining a easy read and great for when you want a slow burn romance and a fight against all the odds. “But I’m happy to hear you say we’re friends. I was worried you only stuck with me out of pity.” Narration: Nicholas Cain is a solid narrator. He captured Adrian and Bex well in the story and I was able to distinguish the other characters well throughout. His voice worked for an unusual witch of the body and he added some mystical charm to Adrian’s character. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed. I can see how this novel helped start his career and set him apart as an author. It is fast paced and action packed with plenty of crazy moments. Everything that I've grown to expect from a Blake Crouch novel. This is an adrenaline ride almost from the start. Jack and his family are about to go on the run. The world has gone crazy and there are bands of people who have decided who needs to die to cleanse the world. All of this comes after an Aurora borealis event that has Jack and his family trying to figure out how they are going to escape with their lives and stay ahead of the people who want to kill them. Jack never imagined he'd have to protect and care for his family like this and he is going to have to dig deep and do some horrible things if he is going to keep them protected. While the premise is a bit far fetched ,it is a crazy adventure. I have enjoyed Blake's ability to write some of the more complicated aspects of marriage and family relationships in his novels. Jack's marriage was all but over before this crisis. His wife was in love with another man and they were trying to figure out how to separate without destroying their kids. That was until the world started falling apart. In their journey to save the family they built, there are some very tender and real moments to figure out where they went wrong in their marriage. I liked that even among all the running for their lives there were some quiet and true moments between a man and a woman who lost their way from each other, trying to figure it all out again. Crouch is a strong writer and even though this is one of his earlier works it stands strong with some of his more sophisticated stories later. This is for people who really like end of the world types of stories with some of the philosophical quandaries that one might have when the world you knew is falling down around you. I couldn't put it down once I started reading as I needed to find out what happened next and if/how Jack and his family would survive this craziness. Overall a solid sci-fi, apocalypse type read with a satisfying ending. ...more |

The Fury of the Gods is the final book of the Bloodsworn Saga, a tale set in a world of Animal gods, The Tainted (humans with the power of certain gods in their blood), Witches and regular Viking like people. This is a action packed ride with a lot of fighting that will get us to the epic conclusion of Gods fighting Gods. The Dragon God has been awoken after hundreds of years by her magical offspring. She wants to take over the world to rule. She has a host her tainted, magical creatures and Rat god brother on her side. Ulfir, the Wolf God stands against her with some of his offspring and many of the mortals of this world that do not want to be led by the gods again. It is going to take some deep cunning to win and many lives will be lost along the way. "Your question was guile or force. That was the wrong question. To defeat Lik-Rifa we will need both. She must be tricked, made to think she is safe to attack us, made to think we are weak when we are strong." The story alternates between various PoVs on both sides of the conflict. There are grudges to be settled, blood oaths to be kept and a Dragon to end or be ended by before our tale is done. There will be no peace until at least one of the gods is dead. Like many books with multiple PoVs, it helps to expand the story and give insight into what everyone is doing. That said I always have my favorites and sometimes hate to leave them to go to another character. Varg "no sense" has been a strong character for me throughout the story. Escaped from slavery he is now part of the Bloodsworn and looking for the man who killed his sister. His crew will help him go up against a Dragon in order to see her murdered punished. Besides Orka's, his was the grudge I wanted satisfaction on the most. Orka's husband was killed by the Dragon born and her son stolen. I wanted her vengeance more than anyone else's in this story and I will say that at the end it was satisfying to see how it all played out. There are many small adventures and battles on the way to the very large battle conclusion that lasted at least a fourth of the book. A lot of people are going to love all the battles but I missed some of the smaller character developments that we saw in the previous books. There was a small redemption for one of the characters and a decision that will change the course of the Tainted's lives going forward but I felt much of the character centered things were traded to fighting. Overall this is an epic adventure and if you have read other Gwynne books you knew what you are in for. This is a war and no character is going to be safe, sometimes the bad guys don't get everything they deserve, sometimes the good guys do very bad things...etc. But if you like a book with a Viking/Norse feel to it and like battles this is going to be for you, as those are done so well. The ending for this is pretty satisfying overall. I always want just a little more closure than we ever get in the ending of a trilogy but I think it wrapped up well and tied up most strings. This is definitely for readers who enjoy grimdark and want a good ending more that needing a happy ending for everyone. ...more |

The book review that got my Amazon account banned from reviewing for: ProfanityThe book review that got my Amazon account banned from reviewing for: Profanity I've tried to talk to real people at Amazon with no success. I only get bot responses when I contact them. I've put in several tickets for this issue, asked to have this and a review for 220pcs Tulip Cupcake Liners (that also did not meet community guidelines) inspected by a human and re-evaluated. No response on that ticket. I called customer service who put in a ticket with the community help people for me and again no response. It is amazing to me that there are so many fake one and two line reviews out there and they shut down my reviewing capability. *shakes head* I have reviewed 2800 items for Amazon and had 2 or 3 issues and they shut down my account. Just crazy to me. This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. 3.5 hearts Only the Cloney is the first book in Sunrise Cantina , a spin off series set in the Risdaverse on Risda III, a sanctuary planet for some of the humans that have been abducted in saved over the years. While this is a new series, I think to really have a good foundation you will need to have read at least a few of the other books in the Risdaverse to really enjoy it. Kazex is a clone and part of the crew of Lord Straik sa'Rin's corsair ship. He fell for Ruthie at first sight when she was brought aboard the ship, saved from a slaver market. She has the face of Lord Straik sa'Rin's mate Ruth and it was established in some of the other books that the original Ruth was used and split into multiple clones. It is not clear they are clones though as it was done of the black market and they didn't get the required red skin marker. Ruthie, our story's clone has a serious case of PTSD and Kazex has decided he is her champion and will be patient as she gets her feet under her. I loved Kazex in this. He is adorable and sometimes like a teenager with his biological urges since he was on suppressants for that most of his life. He is sweet, kind, patient and absolutely committed to Ruthie. He is also completely oblivious to when other women try to hit on him and it is adorable. Ruthie on the other hand is a mess. She is in the middle of an identity crisis with two of her sisters (clones) on the ship she keeps trying to figure out who she is. Both Ruth and Ruthanne seem to have it all together and know exactly who they are, while Ruthie can't seem to make some simple decisions. Kazex is very patient with Ruthie, maybe too patient, but one they figure out they are going to move forward with the relationship it gets a little more interesting. To help Ruthie take charge they find a way to give her a safe word to use when she is feeling overwhelmed. Some of this is really adorable, but Ruthie wasn't a heroine I ever connected with. She is such a limp 'noodle' in so many ways and I just wanted her to take control of her life a little. There are multiple sex scenes in this, but the beginning ones are a bit strange with two very inexperienced people. The other clones from the ship are trying to figure out what to do since Lord Straik isn't going to be pirating anymore in the near future anyway. One of them has a dream to set up a cantina on the planet. I loved the differences between our little gaggle of clones as they try to figure out how to strike out on their own. Those were some of the funniest moments in the book as they try to decide how to get the cantina and what to call it. I have read a lot of books by Ruby Dixon and usually enjoy them a lot. This was not a favorite, but that probably had a lot to do with not connecting with the heroine who was setting the pace of the romance. I really wanted Kazex to just take control of the wooing, while we did get that later in the book with a safety word, it was later in the story. Overall I think the enjoyment of the story is going to depend on if you like Ruthie and connect to her. "I wanted to call it 'A Very Safe Cantina For Human Females Only.'" Narration: Todd McLaren and Rebecca Estrella take on the dual PoV in this book. I'm used to Mason Lloyd and Hollie Jackson for most of the books by Ruby Dixon set in this universe with a few exceptions but I think they did a good job. I normally listen at 1.5x speed but found I needed to bump it up a little due to the different pacing of their performance and listened at 1.75x speed. The switch from PoVs was clear and each narrator captured the vulnerability and innocence of the characters they were performing. Clear voices and diction rounded out their performances. As I've found with other writers from other countries there is a distinct type of storytelling/flow that wasn't specifically what I'm used to in American novels but might be more prevalent in Korean ones. I don't think if you didn't know the original was in Korean, you would be able to tell in the translation as it was smooth. I just want to mention the cover is fantastic and 3/4 of the reason I picked the book up . The story is experienced through three different characters. Each with their own arc in the story that impacts the others at some point. Through them the reader explores different parts of this Feudal world and some of the magic in it. With a foe powered by powerful magic that is harnessed from sorcerers after they die to run mechanical chariots, tanks and sometimes city killing machines. Loren has gone into the volcano where the last dragon is held prisoner to make a bargain. She will bond with him and go after the people who captured and occupy her land. She will attempt to drive out the people who killed her husband and daughter and so doing become King of Arland. The effects of her bargain are subtle at first but as the story goes on the reader gets to explore how her transformation is changing her and how a former teacher of the sword could become king of a nation. "A sword needs a scabbard, as fury needs restraint." Cain lives in a large city in the heart of the empire. He came there as a child when his parents were going to be killed for being part of a rebellion. Left in a strange city with no family, he has become the person other refugees and lower members of society come to when they have a mystery to solve. Now he is trying to solve the murder of a friend, the woman that first helped him when we came to the city. But, there is danger around every corner and Cain quickly finds that whatever she was caught up in might just get him killed too. As he uncovers a plot in the city, he sees how it is tied to the Princess who would become King of Arland and has to decide who he helps, the people in the city he has lived in most his life or the country of his birth. Arienne was taken from Arland as a child to go to the sorcerer school. It used to be a place where they were trained in spells and magic. The school is no longer that, it is more of a holding pen and brainwashing camp to keep people with magic because when they die they are turned into generators for the Empire to power cities and the war machines. She is doing the unthinkable; she is escaping the school and stealing one of the generators. If she is caught they won't wait for her to die, they will turn her into a generator now, which seems like a fate worse than death. The voice of the generator she stole is in her head and while he might have a use for her now and promises of teaching her magic, he has an agenda of his own as well. "Have you already forgotten what I said about that book? Think of who it was that wrote it. The wretch Lysandros, as befits an agent of the Empire, conquers through lies." Overall this is a pretty interesting fantasy story. I liked the characters and the journeys they are on, that are all transforming them into something more. Loren was one of my favorites as she accidentally inspires a broken nation to rise up against their oppressors. I do wish that a few of the battles had a little more detail to them but I think if you aren't a huge fantasy reader those will actually flow better for you. This read like the first book in a series, with the opportunity in future books to explore more nations and more stories of the primary characters. However, it ends in such a way that this could also be a standalone and left to the readers imagination the world the characters build after. In Korean, this is a planned trilogy so I assume if it does well in the US we will see two more books in this world. "Destiny may offer men and women who would be kings, but only the people may exalt them."...more |
