Cracked Brake Rotors : OEM R32 GT-R

Nismo 500 on some borrowed Nismo LMGT1 wheels

OEM R32 GT-R cross drilled rotors cracked

This is why I don't like cross drilled rotors, cracks. Cross drilling creates small micro fissures that with heating and cooling eventually cause cracks.  These rotors have been on Nismo 500 for an unknown amount of time, but at least a few track days.

  • Rear-  297 mm x 18 mm
  • The OEM rotors are cross drilled. Eventually in the GT-R racing range they went to a solid rotor, because cross drilled rotors crack. For racing use, usually a different kind of surface treatment is popular(Plain, slotted, J-Hook). Cross drilling looks good, and works well enough on the street. I like a two piece rotor as they weigh less than a solid disk. You can save several pounds per corner by going to a aluminum hatted rotor.

    • DBA has their 5000 series of rotors but not in the stock 296 mm size, just the 4000 series rotors (Front DBA 4926 296MM   4000 Series Heavy Duty.)(Rear DBA 908)  Have to see if I can come up with anything, or do something like a bracket to put a larger rotor on the car. Larger rotors mean larger wheels, and I think I am sticking with the 16's. (I lied, I'm on R34 18" now)   Brake Weights - R32 GT-R
    • EBC Brake rotors ~$250 to $350 for a set - Front RK1226  ~$85-120 for a set  Rear RK699

Fire Extinguisher Mount from The Bracketeer

Putting a fire out in the pits at Sebring. An oil leak flashed into a fire on the R34

Fire sucks. Fire destroys. There is a point in a fire, not much you can do to put it out. Especially on the side of the road. However, if you are quick enough, you might have the chance to stop a small fire from becoming a big one.

I previously had another fire extinguisher mount in the Nismo, but moved that over to the bluecar. Since I am driving the Nismo again, I wanted to put another mount into it.

The guys that run the South OC Cars and Coffee make and sell a universal fire extinguisher mount called The Bracketeer. I paired that with a H3R HG250 fire extinguisher in the bluecar. In the meanwhile I have an Amerex. I am not a huge fan of dry chemical extinguishers. They make a mess that is near impossible to clean up. They are much less expensive, and they work, but like the picture above chemical goes everywhere.

Working on NISMO 500 : Battery : Fuel System

Nismo 16 inch wheels. Theses were available from Nissan/Nismo

I'm a Nismo nerd. I like old logo Nismo parts. This includes all the stuff around when the NISMO R32 GT-R was released.  The Nismo version of the car had a factory 180 km/hr cluster, had factory wheels, but it did have the Nismo, also called N1 aero parts.  Its been many years since I had #500 at home. Thinking about it, might be about 5 years since I had the car at home. Time flies when you are having fun.  Since then I have been working on other cars, the bluecar, expanding the business, and other things.

At a point #500 had an OS88 transmission, and a carbon clutch in it.  However I pulled it to go into Big Bird 2.  There is a bunch of little things that I wanted to change and do on the car, that I haven't got around to doing. With it at home, I have a chance to work on it in my spare time.  The first thing it needed was a battery.

LiFePo4 battery moved from bluecar to Nismo

The battery in the Nismo was extra flat. I tried to bring it back to life, but its just been too long.  So I ordered another LiFePo4 battery, and in the meantime swapped one from the bluecar

Hotside of the Nismo
The strut tower bar is my favorite early Nismo bar, with the master cylinder stopper.  Stock airbox. Stock MAF for now, but it will get some R35/Nissan MAF run on a Nistune. The twin turbo pipe is divided. The exhaust manifolds are ported and Swain coated. The coils are stock, with a DoLuck ignition strengthening harness for now. I may put a Supertec R35 kit in it.

Some fuel system components. R35 MAF
I have some fuel system things for the car. That includes some new bits and pieces for E85. I have E85 on the bluecar, and I highly recommend it.  This is a modified stock rail. I has a -8 supply and a -8 return on it.  Playing with some quick disconnects, and some different fuel filters to use those connectors.

#bluecar and Nismo #500 : 2021 Updates

R32 GT-R for sale by Toprank Importers
Filling up the bluecar with some E85

Welcome to 2021. 2020 was a trip, I am sure 2021 is going to be more of the same. I suspect six months of bad shit, followed by six months of just shit. Then many years of recovery. With that said here are some of my updates on the two R32 GT-R that I have.

#bluecar

Chevron rewards from Vons means a 20 cent per gallon discount. $1.79 per gallon for E85 in Southern California. This is what I call winning.

E85. Been on E85 in the Bluecar for about two years now. Recently had the fuel pump out to inspect the tank. Everything looks good. Replaced the fuel filter about eight months or so ago. Probably about time to check it again. Getting the hoses off is a pain in the ass, but such is life. I have to get in there to mess with the flex fuel and things anyway. I bought some quick disconnects for the flex fuel sensor, because I like quick disconnects.

This was a couple years ago, I think right before I did the E85 swap.

Instagram tells me, I did it 19 weeks ago, but this may not have been the bluecar, may have been the RentJDM Calsonic.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CEzPNaXJOce/

Car is decently fast at 14 psi. Faster with 21 psi.

Unfortunately those runs about killed my Nismo Coppermix twin plate clutch. So I ordered a couple more plates for it. One of two came in. Turns out there was only one in the US. So one from the US, and ordered another one from Japan.

Nismo twin plate Coppermix clutch disk. One of two I need. 30100-RSC01

Got my grey sunvisor in. That is important, with the slider.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CKJ9_bvp-bT/

This is how I spent a bit of my time with bluecars in 2020.

Nismo #500

Look, I realize these are pretty worthless speakers. I actually already replaced the actual drivers in them . But in doing so I poked some holes in the fragile light up Kenwood logos. I want to repair them. The Nismo didn't have speaker cutout or covers on the rear deck. The N'fit system was installed in 500. If you have some N'fit speakers, let me know.

The backburner project that was the Nismo got done last year. N1 block, big cams, OS88 sequential transmission, Tilton carbon clutch, etc, etc.  I picked it up, drove it to the warehouse. Did a couple things to it. Drove it around the block a few times.  Then it sat.  Then 2020 came, and BB2 got into my head. So pulled the OS88 trans and clutch for BB2. Brought the Nismo back, and stuck it in the warehouse again.

Later we needed a R32 GT-R radiator for some new parts development/testing. So I pulled the radiator one weekend.  More recently I decided to get it back together. Bought a radiator to throw in it. I want to change the fuel system up a little on it. Get it closer to being ready for E85. It has 1/2 the stuff it needs. I want to put the other parts back on that look more stock.

GKTech fan with adapter for a Nissan Skyline GT-R

Some people have said online they had issues with GKTech fans, I haven't had any, and ran them on a bunch of cars. What I think may happen is bad motor mounts. Flex, and the fan breaks before the shroud. Normally the OEM fan will break the shroud. That is my best guess, as I haven't actually seen one fail.

Nismo intercooler duct for the front bumper. Some other bits for Nismo #500

Some more bits and pieces to replace other pieces. Nismo collector, wrinkle black. No logo on purpose

I need to replace the fuel rail that is in place, with the OEM modified one from Alex Rodriguez. It has a -8 feed and return. For the fuel pump, I have a double pump setup from Frencys Performance in Australia.

  • Radiator
  • Water pump pulley (Still deciding if this is ok, some people say turn slower, some faster)
    • Let's spin this waterpump. #calsonic #lasvegas I am trying out a 100mm water pump pulley to overdrive the water pump vs the stock 140mm pulley. A 4pk845 seemed to fit ok. See how this goes for cooling at idle and low speed. If this were a track car, I wouldn't do this, but this is 100% street car @rentjdm car that will see lots of days in excess of 100F. #r32 #gtrtech #rb26dett #radiator

    • Clutch booster
    • Master cylinder
    • Lots of suspension bushings
    • Turbos - some twin setup. The Nismo turbos are fine, but...

Fire Extinguisher : Nissan Skyline GT-R

H3R Performance Universal Fire Extinguisher Bracket in a R32 GT-R

If you have ever had a car catch on fire, you know it is a scary thing. There is a point with every fire that no amount of handheld fire extinguisher will help.  However a small handheld extinguisher deployed quick enough can extinguish a fire.

Without getting into too many details, there are four main types of fires. A,B,C, and D.  Each has an extinguishing agent that puts it out best.  There are pros and cons to each.   Most cars you are going to normally have a burning liquid, oil or fuel, that will also burn some materials. So a class B,A fire. B being a burning liquid, A being paper, carpet, that kind of thing. C being electrical, so a non conductive agent. D being a burning metal.

Rare NISMO OptionR32 GT-R Parts : AC Condenser - Oil Cooler Combo

Is this cooler 1/2 to 3/4 as good as a normal  A/C condenser? The nice part about it, is that its well protected. However your A/C may not be as cold as you like. Compromises. Versus not having A/C, we will try this out and see how it goes.   The oil cooler is a bit weird with two 90 degree fittings on it. Cooler looks like it is a Setrab core, around a 925.   This part is going into NISMO #500.  It was cleaned up and painted with a light coat of radiator black.

Since an RB26 puts a ton of heat into the oil, this is a great way to try and keep a pretty mild GT-R's oil temps under control.  More information about oil cooling for a Nissan Skyline GT-R.

Fuel Pump Install : Nissan Skyline GT-R : NISMO Pump Into a NISMO

Most of our Nissan Skylines are at least 25 years old. At that age, things wear out, or will eventually wear out. On our NISMO #500, we decided to get preemptive and ordered a NISMO fuel pump to replace the OEM fuel pump. We see it as cheap insurance.  The NISMO pumps are great pumps, drop in, and have low failure rates. Tomei, Nismo, and Apex'i are all similar pumps. Stock R32 is rated at 195 L/hr . Nismo replacement is rated at 276 l/hr. More fuel pump info - Stealth 316.  The single NISMO pump, at OEM voltages is good to about 500 wheel horsepower and 75 psi. Above that you need to start thinking about some complex fuel systems.

Since fuel vapors are flammable (well duh) always do this in a well ventilated area, keep smoking to a minimum.  Some people pull the fuel pump fuse, or disconnect the pump connector to clear the lines of fuel.  We aren't afraid of fuel.
