Open a bag of Doritos Blaze chips, and your sinuses are all but cleared. The smell of Doritos' newest flavor is INTENSE. But with promises on the bag like "It tastes like licking a volcano," they kind of have to be.
Doritos Blaze chips will be in stores starting tomorrow, January 4, joining red Nacho Cheese and blue Cool Ranch as a staple flavor. They come in a dark purple bag (which seems to be a nod to the other two flavors) decked out with flames and thermograph handprints.
Taste-wise, they kind of miss the mark. Despite phrases like "intense flavor eruption" and "amped up fiery heat" on the back of the bags, none of the Delish editors who tasted the chips found them to be all that spicy.
The chips' ingredient list includes jalapeño powder and "spices," plus tomato, onion, and garlic powders. While the smell is definitely intense, the taste itself is more sweet-and-spicy than ghost-pepper-level spice. One editor thought Spicy Nacho Doritos taste hotter. Personally, my throat was burning, but literally no one else thought so, so I must be weak.
In a press release, Frito-Lay hinted at more hot flavors to come. "While the new Doritos Blaze platform is initially launching with one spicy flavor, Doritos will look to expand the platform in the future."
Doritos Blaze will be sold in 9.75-ounce bags for a retail price of $4.29 and 3-ounce bags for $1.69. They'll be on shelves nationwide starting Thursday.
