FAQs about Our External Fire Doors

Explore key details about our fire-rated doors below.

How do you choose the best fire door for your home?

There are several factors to consider when choosing external fire door sets, including:

  • The fire rating: FD30 doors are most common; however, there are also FD60 doors, which offer 60 minutes of protection.

  • Certification: Ensure the doors are independently tested and meet UK regulations.

  • Location: Fire doors are designed for specific areas (office, passage, etc.), so you need to purchase the right door for each room.

  • Core material: Solid composite or solid timber core doors typically provide the best fire resistance.

  • Door accessories: Ensure that you also get fire-rated handles and hinges, as well as attach intumescent strips to the door edges to ensure adequate fire resistance.

  • Style: Choose from a variety of finishes, colours, and glazing options to suit your home’s aesthetic.

How do you install fire-rated doors?

While we don’t provide this service, our team can provide you with expert guidance on installing external fire doors. Here’s how to install a fire-rated door:

  1. Check for verification: Look for FD30 or FD60 labels to ensure the door is certified.

  2. Inspect the door frame: Ensure it’s fire-rated and compatible with your fire safety doors in terms of sizing.

  3. Position the door: Begin by positioning the door correctly with equal clearances (typically 2 to 4 mm at the edges) and within regulatory limits.

  4. Secure the hinges: Screw in the fire-rated hinges, making sure they’re properly recessed so the door fits in the frame.

  5. Fit the intumescent strips: Place the strips along the door edges and sides, as these play a big part in achieving adequate fire resistance. Ensure there are no gaps in the corners, as this could compromise the door’s protection and security.

  6. Attach additional accessories: Fit the hinges, latches, handles, and door closers. Then, ensure the door closes properly and that the gaps around the frame are within recommended limits.

What regulations apply to fire doors?

In the UK, external fire doors must comply with various regulations, including:

  • The Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order.

  • BS 476-22 and BS EN 1634-1 testing standards.

  • Specific building requirements.

Typically, fire-rated external doors require a minimum FD30 rating, fire-rated accessories, proper maintenance, and correct installation.
