How to Apply Emla Cream

For most procedures, Emla cream must be applied at least one hour before the start of the procedure.

FOR SMALL AREAS

Step 1

  • Ensure that the skin is clean
    and dry
  • Press out sufficient quantity of cream onto the site of the procedure
  • Do not spread out the cream
  • For needle procedures in adults this is about 2g or half of a 5g tube

Step 2

  • Take one of the enclosed occlusive dressings and remove the centre cut-out piece
  • Other occlusive dressings can be used if there is no dressing in pack. E.g. plastic film such as cling wrap should be stuck on with adhesive tape

Step 3

  • Peel the paper liner from the paper framed dressing. Cover Emla cream so that you get a thick layer underneath
  • Smooth down the dressing edges carefully to avoid leakage
  • Remove the paper frame and mark the time of application on the occlusive dressing
  • Remove the occlusive dressing immediately before the procedure
  • Wipe off the cream and clean the area with alcohol

FOR LARGE AREAS

DO NOT APPLY TO LARGE AREAS OF THE BODY,
EXCEPT ON THE ADVICE OF A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL.

Step 1

  • Ensure that the skin is clean and dry
  • Press out sufficient quantity of cream onto the site of the procedure

Step 2

  • Spread a thick layer of cream over an area no larger than 600cm2 (for adults)

Step 3

  • Use adhesive tape to stick plastic film such as cling wrap to the area
  • Cover Emla cream so that you get a thick
    layer underneath

Step 4

  • Remove the cling wrap immediately before the
    procedure
  • Wipe off the cream and clean the area with alcohol
  • Do not to exceed the maximum dose

DO NOT APPLY TO LARGE AREAS OF THE BODY, EXCEPT ON THE ADVICE OF A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL.

  • Refer to the dosage table within the Instructions for Use leaflet for maximum children’s doses.
  • Extra care should be taken where larger quantities of Emla are required, adults must not use more than 60g of Emla spread over an area of not larger than 600cm2 (the size of an A4 piece of paper). Tell your doctor immediately if you start to experience side effects.

How to Apply Emla Patch

Emla patch must be applied at least one hour before the procedure.

Step 1

  • Make sure that the area of the skin to be anaesthetised is clean and dry
  • Take hold of the aluminium flap at the corner of the patch and bend it backwards
  • Next, take hold of the corner of the beige-coloured patch layer
  • Pull the two layers apart, separating the adhesive surface from the protective liner

Step 2

  • Make sure you do not touch the white round pad which contains Emla
  • Apply patch to the intended area and press firmly around the edges

Step 3

  • Time of application can be marked onto the corner of the patch taking care not to press the centre of the dressing. (A ballpoint pen may be used for this purpose)
