Sales and Inventory Reporting
Sales & Sales Tax Reporting version 1.2
The EDItX Sales Report format is intended to be used by a retailer, distributor or other intermediary, or by an agent reporting on their behalf, to report sales to a publisher or content owner. The EDItX Sales Tax Report format is intended to be used by the same reporters but to report the details of indirect tax (VAT, GST or Sales tax) rates and and amounts associated with sales in different tax jurisdictions as well as sales.
Such sales reports are the basis on which payments are made to the publisher, either by the seller or, if the seller is a branch of a larger organization that purchases centrally, by the central ‘buyer’. The sales tax reports are usually the basis for reporting on tax to be remitted or that has already been paid.
The 1.2 versions of these Sales and Sales Tax reports have been updated to make them more familiar to ONIX 3.0 devlopers – for example, by allowing the use of some of the same tags and relevant composites where approppriate, or by using some of the ONIX codelists. New functionality now allows any price that can be ‘advertised’ in ONIX for Books to be reported upon in EDItX. However, version 1.2 remains fully backward compatible with previous versions of the Sales and Sales Tax report. The documentation has also been improved radically, and now follows the style used for ONIX.
The format was originally developed for use in the e-book supply chain in North America, but minor adaptations made it suitable for use internationally in both digital and non-digital book product supply chains. This EDItX format allows e-book sales reports to be sent from distributors or other vendors to the publisher or content owner as standard XML messages, to be used as the basis for payments to the publisher.
NEW The Sales and Sales Tax report is currently being revised and updated with new functionality, with v1.3 planned for publication later in 2026. Those with an interest in implementing EDItX sales reporting should contact EDItEUR.
Inventory Reporting version 1.2 NEW
The EDItX Inventory Report format is intended to be used by a retailer, wholesaler or other intermediary managing inventory on behalf of the publisher or content owner (for example, print books on consignment), or by an agent reporting on their behalf, to report inventory levels of physical products to the publisher or the publisher’s distributor.
From version 1.1, the report was updated to allow for an inventory of the status of digital products to be communicated back to the publisher, reducing the need for publishers to monitor e-book and digital audio vendor websites to check on the on-sale status of their titles.
Inventory reports may be used to report inventory levels and movements in those markets where various forms of inventory management are practised and can be used for physical or digital inventory reporting.
From version 1.1, the Inventory Report has also been updated to make it more familiar to ONIX 3.0 users, with some revised tag names and use of ONIX codelists. This version of the inventory report remains fully compatable with previous versions (the old tag names and codes still work).
From version 1.2, the report has been further updated to allow the transmission of nested reports, so an intermediary recipient of several reports can pass them on to a publisher in a single message with several nested reports. Version 1.2 continues to retain almost full backwards compatibility with previous versions, although fields are no longer allowed to be empty, or to include any leading or trailing white space. A new JSON syntax has been defined, in addition to the existing XML syntax.
The format was originally derived from the EDItX Sales Report format 1.0. It is intended that the format be implemented in digital and non-digital or mixed book product supply chains.

Version 1.1 of the Sales Report format is suitable for both sales and tax reporting, and was developed in close collaboration with the Sales Reporting Working Group of BISG’s Supply Chain EDI Committee. BISG simultaneously published XML and ‘flat file’ sales report and sales tax report formats to meet North American book trade requirements. The BISG XML formats are fully compatible subsets of the corresponding EDItX format. The BISG ‘flat file’ formats are consistent with the corresponding BISG XML formats.
The differences between the EDItX version and BISG subset of the message format relate to the maintenance (in the EDItX version) of full backwards compatibility with Version 1.0. This includes retention of some data elements that may be required for trading outside North America, but which are omitted from the BISG subset. The BISG subsets of the EDItX format can be found here.
Legacy Digital Sales Report formats
The documentation and XML schema for EDItX Sales Report Version 1.0 is still available. Note that messages that conform to this 1.0 standard remain fully compatible with the EDItX Sales and Tax Report version 1.1.
The original Digital Sales Report from 2003 remains available, below, until such time as it can be established that it is not being used.
