We will also ensure that our products also meet the requirements for Europe through CE certification and marking, which will enable our products to be sold within Northern Ireland in compliance with UK Government guidance. Wherever relevant we aim to ensure products will carry both UKCA and CE marks. For guidance on the new legislation see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/using-the-ukni-marking.
We are currently well underway with the transition, working closely with UK and European approval bodies to ensure all deadlines are met.
All film forming foams used in our extinguishers do not contain fluorosurfactants based on C8 technology and therefore do not contain PFOS or PFOA. PFOS was banned in Europe in 2009 and PFOA in 2020 and the vast majority of foam manufacturers based in Europe have not used these types of fluorosurfactants for some years.
All film forming foams manufactured in Europe for the EU/UK market are manufactured using fluorosurfactants based on C6 technology.
A discussion document has been issued by the 'Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) and the Committee for Socio-economic Analysis (SEAC) proposing restrictions on Undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) its salts and related substances ECHA/RAC/RES-0-0000006976-57-01/F dated June 2021. If this proposal is adopted by Europe, then all C6 based fire-fighting foam will be included in this proposal and will lead to an eventual ban on the use of AFFF and all film forming foams. UK authorities are discussing similar proposals.).
Firechief Global is committed to developing PFAS Free firefighting technology, enabling the elimination of PFAS-based fire extinguishing compounds from the Firechief product range. To support this, look for the PFAS Free symbol used on product pages to which it currently applies.
If you are a business: In the first instance, you should contact the fire extinguisher maintenance company that is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of your fire extinguishers on site. This will ensure that your extinguishers are disposed of through a specialist route which may recondition units or alternatively separate the components for recycling. It is advisable to be aware of your responsibilities under current legislation, which makes the organisation creating the waste responsible for its ultimate disposal, and always check waste carrier licenses and ensure waste transfer notes are received and retained. The BAFE Fire Safety Register is one place to check for local companies that are registered for the BAFE Fire Extinguisher Scheme, who should be able to offer a collection and disposal service.
If you are a member of the public: Firstly, you should check the local disposal arrangements with your council, with most offering disposal of extinguishers at larger household waste and recycling centres. For safety reasons, local authorities usually ask for the handles to be securely taped together or the safety pin to be in place. CO2 types should have the swivel horn in place. Larger extinguishers (over 2kg/2litre) might be considered commercial waste and may not be accepted. In this instance you should contact a local fire extinguisher maintenance company to discuss collection and disposal for which there will likely be a charge. The BAFE Fire Safety Register is one place to check for local companies that are registered for the BAFE Fire Extinguisher Scheme, who should be able to offer a collection and disposal service.
Recycling: Fire extinguishers are important life safety products and it is essential that they can be relied on to function correctly when they are needed. There are some specialist providers of fire extinguisher reconditioning but it is advisable to be aware of the rigorous safety laws relating to pressurised vessels, should you consider this option. Alternatively, there are many components of a fire extinguisher that can be responsibly recycled and fire extinguisher maintenance companies will have necessary arrangements in place to ensure this is done wherever possible.
