Loyalist flag - a photo on Flickriver

Loyalist flag

            This area was settled by United Empire Loyalists ('Tories' to our American friends), and is very proud of its heritage; there are many of these original Union Jack flags around (from before Ireland became part of the U.K. in 1801).

Ultimately, Canada owes its very existence to the Loyalists, coming up here and settling, thus establishing a British presence, which was augmented by later colonists from the British Isles, like my ancestors.
