49 & Market Country Heart Cafe Party Folio Tutorial for Wonderful Wednesday

Hello, Friends!  Our Wonderful Wednesday project this week is a 49 & Market Country Heart Cafe Party Folio Tutorial.  We’re kicking off the month of September with an invitation for fall to come peeking in our windows!

This large party in a box folio measures 6 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ with a 2″ spine, so there’s lots of room for interactive elements on the inside.  )Just wait til you see it fold out! This one just goes and goes!)

Because I’m spending a lot of time on rehab after my knee surgery right now, we’ll take a couple weeks to build this folio out.  Today, we’ll focus on building the base, the box pocket, and the cover.

Sunflowers Outside My Window

This cozy kitchen window looks out onto a field of sunflowers.  You can learn how to make the shaker element in today’s video.  I added a brown gingham bow, fall flowers, and a burlap trim border to amp up the country vibe.

When I asked you what you wanted to make with this beautiful collection, y’all had a LOT of ideas: folios, mini album, cards, a banner, and a party in a box.  I’m going to combine several of those requests in this one project.  We will make a banner…but not until later this month.  Sound good?

Knee Surgery Update

The latest news is that I am doing great 8 weeks out from my total knee replacement.  I’m still dealing with stiffness, fatigue and some discomfort, of course.  This is a long healing process that takes up to a year! In addition to my bending and extension exercises, I’m walking over a mile a day in 10-15 minute increments.  My physical therapy has moved from more passive treatments to building strength back into my calves, quads and hamstrings.  We’re also working on balance, which is harder than it sounds.

I had PT today, and it was downright rigorous, and that’s a good thing because it means I’ve turned a corner in my recovery.  Yay!  But it also means that I was exhausted when I got home.  As soon as I finish writing this blog post, I’m gonna go ice, elevate, and maybe take a little nap!

An Old Fashioned Christmas Card Kit Reveal for The Button Farm Club

These cards should fit nicely into a 5″ x 7″ envelope, and  are lightweight and easy to mail.

News & Updates

This is a busy week at Kathy by Design!  Our long-awaited Button Farm Club Christmas Card Kit will release on Friday (the 28th).  I’ll be back then to share the kit reveal with you.  It’s such a beautiful kit this year….and you’ll get a little sneak peek of one of the goodies in the kit in today’s tutorial.  I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

On the knee front, I’m doing really well.  I’m walking a LOT, doing exercises and getting back to normal.  I still get very fatigued by the end of the day.  And, it I overdo it…I pay a price the next day with swelling and tenderness.  So I’m learning my boundaries and feeling really good overall.

I Need to Hear From You

Another bit update is that I am seriously thinking of not renewing my blog this year.  The price has gone up quite a lot…and I’m not sure how many people are actually reading it.  So I need to hear from you:  do you read the blog?  Or do you just watch my YouTube channel and social media sites?  Hearing from you will  help me make a quality decision.

Prima Homegrown Triple Easel Card Tutorial for Wonderful Wednesday

Hello, Friends!  It’s Wonderful Wednesday and I have the cutest Triple Easel Card Tutorial to share with you today.  Y’all know how much I love a good pop up card, so when I saw this new style of wiper card, I just had to take it for a spin with Prima’s Homegrown collection.

The card construction is beautiful in its simplicity, and amazing in its function.  First of all, there are no dies involved.  Start with  4 simple matted layers of cardstock.  Next, score and fold 3 wiper arm mechanisms between the layers.  Then add your fussy cut layers or ephemera bits to the ends of the wiper arms.  Add whatever embellishments you like, and you are done!

My card base is 5″x 7″ so it’s larger than many of the samples you will find online.  It does fold all the way down for mailing, but will need a bubble mailer because it’s a little bit thick, and the pull tab makes it wider than 5″.

Two Sets of Mice is Twice as Nice!

I had so much fun making my first Triple Wiper Card that I set up for a second go round.  I think you’re really going to enjoy making this fun card design.

And, of course, you can make it in any theme with any paper you have in your stash.  You can bet I will be making some holiday cards with this fun design.

Personal Update

So many of you have asked how I’m coming along with my knee replacement recovery that I thought I’d address that for you.

The short answer is, I’m doing really well.  Some days are better than others, and I’m still dealing with stiffness and swelling.  But I’m walking several times a day and doing physical therapy twice a week.  I see gradual improvement on most days.  I’m still learning how to get along with my new knee, and it makes me feel very tired by the end of the day.  I’m 6 weeks into the recovery process, and my PT says I’m doing great.

Thank you for all your kind thoughts, prayers, wishes, cards and encouragement.  This has been quite a year…but I’m getting all this behind me so that 2027 will be amazing.

Prima Homegrown Pop Up Shadowbox Card Tutorial for Wonderful Wednesday

Hello, Friends!  It’s Wonderful Wednesday and I have a fun and easy Prima Homegrown Pop Up Shadowbox Card Tutorial to share with you.  Don’t  you just love it when a card makes the recipient ask, “How did you DO that?”  But you secretly know that it was a cinch to make?  Well, that’s why I love this Pop Up Shadowbox card design,

I first saw a photo of an A2 sized version of this 5×7 card on Pinterest.  Right away, I recognized it as a pop out box design with a die cut opening.  What a brilliant idea!  So I got out some scrap paper, my pencil, and a ruler and began figuring out the dimensions for making this card.  After a couple of false starts, I broke the code and came up with today’s tutorial for you.

Gardening Mice are Very Nice

After testing out my prototype design, I went to work creating a “real” card, which you saw in the above photos.  Next on tap?  Cutting and labeling all the pieces for today’s tutorial.

Honestly, this card is so much fun to make, I could have just kept making card after card with this design.

TIP:  Create dimension by fussy cutting elements from the paper pad and popping them up on foam tape.  This simple move creates a feeling that you could walk into the scene.

TIP:  Add texture with ribbon and lace!  When you layer lace over ribbon, it just seems to pop off the page, doesn’t it?

Add A Flap Element

Make this card even more interactive by adding a magnetic flap element.  Simply save the die cut from your shadowbox arch, score a 1/2″ flap on the bottom, add magnets, adhere behind the base panel, and you’ve got a mighty cute design going on!
