Story[edit]
Kingdom Hearts Union χ[edit]
Aurora appears in Enchanted Dominion as a projection of the Book of Prophecies, where a parallel version of Aurora's future events is explored by Player and other Keyblade wielders from Daybreak Town.
In the projection, Aurora lives with Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather as "Briar Rose" after being cursed by Maleficent as a baby. On her sixteenth birthday, Aurora's singing draws the attention Prince Phillip, whom she recognizes from her dreams. She invites him to meet at her cottage, and then runs into the woods, where she is attacked by Heartless before being rescued by Player.
Aurora sees Player once again at her cottage, where the three good fairies reveal her true identity as King Stefan's daughter. The fairies tell Aurora she is betrothed to Prince Philip, and, unaware he is the same man she met, she is distraught. With Player's protection, Aurora and the three good fairies travel through the woods to the castle boundaries. The three good fairies bring Aurora to her room and bestow her with her crown, but she remains upset. Seeing this, the three good fairies leave the room to allow her alone time.
While Aurora is alone, Maleficent enchants Aurora into following a green light up to a hidden tower, where it transforms into a spinning wheel. At Maleficent's urging, Aurora touches the spindle, triggering her curse and causing her to fall into a deep sleep. The three good fairies place Aurora's sleeping body in bed.
After the three good fairies find Prince Phillip and help him defeat Maleficent, he finds Aurora in her bedroom and kisses her, ending the curse. Afterwards, Aurora and Phillip dance together at a ball.
Between Kingdom Hearts Union χ and Dark Road[edit]
Aurora is born as the princess of Enchanted Dominion, and is cursed by Maleficent as a baby. In order to protect her, the three good fairies hide her in the woods and raise her as "Briar Rose".
Kingdom Hearts Dark Road[edit]
In preparation for their Mark of Mastery exam, the Keyblade wielders Vidar, Vala, Vali, Hoder, Heimdall, Helgi, and Sigrun visit Enchanted Dominion, where they learn about the curse Maleficent placed on Aurora. Hoder decides to confront Maleficent about Aurora's curse, but is unable to help and eventually killed during the conflict.
Between Kingdom Hearts Dark Road and Birth by Sleep[edit]
Over the years, Aurora is raised by the three good fairies and eventually dreams of Prince Phillip. On a chance meeting, Aurora encounters Phillip outside of her dreams. However, when Phillip asks for her name, Aurora rushes away, telling him to meet her at her cottage.
Soon after this encounter, Aurora falls into deep slumber as a result of Maleficent's curse, and she is laid to sleep in the castle's tower.
At some point, Xehanort visits Enchanted Dominion and tells Maleficent that Aurora's heart can be used to gain great power. Maleficent conspires to take Aurora's heart.
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]
Terra arrives at Enchanted Dominion and is directed to Aurora's bedroom by Maleficent. When he refuses Maleficent's command to take Aurora's heart, Maleficent puts him into a trance. While Terra is in a trance, Maleficent and Xehanort extract Aurora's heart.[1] Aurora's stolen heart is taken to Maleficent's castle and trapped within green fire, while Aurora's body continues to sleep in her bed.
Ventus finds Aurora's sleeping body, and convinces the three good fairies to help him rescue her heart. Ventus frees Aurora's heart and allows it to return to her body, experiencing Aurora's memory in the process. However, she continues to sleep as the curse is not broken. Prince Phillip eventually defeats Maleficent with Aqua's aid, and reaches the tower, where he kisses Aurora and breaks the curse.
Some time after the battle at the Keyblade Graveyard, Aurora and Phillip are seen dancing in the audience chamber of the castle. Feeling disapproval over their respective colors, Flora and Merryweather relentlessly change the color of Aurora's dress with magic.
Between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts[edit]
Some time later, Aurora is captured once more and has her heart stolen by Maleficent, while Enchanted Dominion falls to darkness. Aurora's body is imprisoned behind glass in Hollow Bastion's Great Hall alongside her fellow Princesses of Heart, Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella.
Kingdom Hearts[edit]
Aurora's likeness is seen on one of the pillars in Sora's Dive to the Heart.
When Sora confronts Riku in Hollow Bastion, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness possesses him and uses the hearts of Aurora and five other Princesses to forge the Keyblade of Heart. Sora manages to retrieve the Keyblade, and uses it on himself to free Kairi, also freeing the other Princesses' stolen hearts. Their hearts return to their bodies, and they wake up. A flood of darkness consumes Ansem, and Aurora and the other Princesses use their power to hold back the darkness from consuming the world.
Aurora also reveals Maleficent's origins to Sora. After Sora seals the Keyhole, she and the other Princesses remain in Hollow Bastion to protect it, along with the Beast, Yuffie, Leon, and Aerith.
When Sora finally seals the Door to Darkness, Aurora is returned to the newly-restored Enchanted Dominion.
Kingdom Hearts II[edit]
The DTD dataspace in Space Paranoids is sealed with a password composed of the seven Princesses' names: "Belle, Snow White, Aurora, Alice, Jasmine, Cinderella, Kairi".
Between Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III[edit]
Having fulfilled her time as a Princess of Heart, Aurora's power passes on to a new Princess.
Design[edit]
Aurora is a fair-skinned woman with indigo eyes and waist-length, curly, blonde hair. In Kingdom Hearts, Aurora's hair was a brighter shade of blonde.
As the princess, Aurora wears a long-sleeved, strapless and pleated sky-blue gown with a white collar, as well as a gold necklace and tiara crafted by her three fairy godmothers. The Station depicting Aurora in Sora's Dive to the Heart depicts Aurora in a black headband and a similar dress that has a purple midsection, violet arms, and a violet lower half.
As Briar Rose, Aurora is barefoot, and wears a three-quarter sleeved grey dress with a folded, white collar and a black corset, as well as a black headband.
Aurora does not appear to age throughout the ten years between Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts.
As with several other characters, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX reused the Birth by Sleep character model for Aurora in its port of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
Abilities[edit]
As a Princess of Heart, the purity of the light in her heart makes her immune to the darkness, to the point that she can not only brave locations like the Corridors of Darkness that would normally engulf a heart, but even sense and push back darkness that threatens to overwhelm others. Furthermore, when united with the other princesses, her heart is an essential ingredient in summoning the Keyblade of heart and opening the Final Keyhole that leads to Kingdom Hearts.
In addition, she has the power to provide magical power to others, as shown when she provided a Fire element to Sora.
Origin[edit]
Aurora is inspired by the titular character of the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, written by Charles Perrault. While her inspiration was unnamed in the original tale, her real name, Aurora, comes from the ballet adaptation The Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky, while her name under the fairies' care, "Briar Rose," stems from the Brothers Grimm retelling.
In the film, Aurora is the only child of King Stefan and Queen Leah. At infancy, Maleficent curses her so that, on her sixteenth birthday, Aurora would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. Thanks to the aid of the three good fairies, Aurora's curse is softened. Rather than die, Aurora would fall into a deep sleep, one which she could only be awoken from by "true love's kiss". To keep her safe, she is renamed Briar Rose and relocated to the forest of her world with the three fairies caring for her. On a chance meeting, Aurora encounters Prince Phillip, to whom she was betrothed (unbeknownst to her). Upon learning the truth about her parents, Aurora is led to the castle, where Maleficent leads her to the spindle, and when Aurora pricks her finger on it and falls asleep, the fairies place her in the tallest tower. However, Prince Phillip eventually defeats Maleficent and saves Aurora. The film ends with Aurora and Phillip dancing together.
Notes and references[edit]
- ^ Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania, Interviewer: "If Terra wasn't the one who stole Aurora's heart in his chapter, who actually did steal it?" / Nomura: "It was Master Xehanort and Maleficent. In "KHI" it was shown that beings of darkness like Maleficent and the Heartless are able to steal people's hearts. The theory is that Terra, who has light residing in his heart, is not a being of darkness and therefore didn't steal Aurora's heart." Translation via krexia
