Set on the open ocean in 1900, Age of Sail is the story of William Avery (voiced by Ian McShane), an old sailor adrift and alone in the North Atlantic. When Avery reluctantly rescues Lara, who has mysteriously fallen overboard, he finds redemption and hope in his darkest hours.

Jan won the children's BBC Screen Test animation award in 1980. Host Brian Trueman described his film as 'professional' and later admitted that they could not believe he had produced it all himself. Jan said it took him three weeks with very little sleep. Jan had been runner up in the 1979 contest.
