Grandson of Governor of Burma Sir Hugh Lansdown Stephenson (1871-1948). Son of British Ambassador Hugh Southern Stephenson (1906-1972). He was a journalist and educator who was from (1971-1981) Editor of Times Business News, and (1982-1986) Editor of New Statesman.
