The music video of "Elton's Song" has to be one of the most heart crushing videos of all time, and one that despite a great deal of sadness and unfulfilled wishes
it is one that I keep coming back whenever I can. There's something deep that attracts me to the story, the settings and the dream-like vibes presented in many sequences.
And it's one of those universal love stories where one person finds it very hard to show his love for a loved one because everything seems impossible, forbidden yet everything feels so right.
It tells a cute yet sad story of a young boy who has an endless and deep crush on an older schoolmate in this all boys school, a burning love that doesn't fade away and due to his awkwardness whenever he sees the other guy it becomes something visible to all the other boys and he gets mocked about it. The eye glances, the longing to be near the loved one which always creates embarassing moments when he's too near, so it's pretty obvious that he tries to keep himself distant but it's quite impossible.
Directed by Russell Mulcahy, who directed many videos for Elton in the 1980's, this one is a pure charm to see thanks to the performance of the young boy who really express the feelings of pain and frustration for not being able to show his love and affection to the handsome mate - and this other guy is a quite curious figure himself since he doesn't feel much bothered for being the kid's crush, there is some moments when he seems to show some little reciprocity, not in the sense that he wants the boy but it's more of a sense that he feels slightly flattered of having someone liking him. I'd really like to know what happened to those young actors, they're very good.
A pity that it wasn't shown on TV and it created some controversy back in the day just because of the gay theme, but by today's standards is very much in tune with society's evolution. Plenty of things can be learned through here plus the empathy coming from those who are far from such reality. The story is very cute and appealing in its simplicty, plus it has one of Elton's most inspired lyrics though it's not of my favorite songs of his since the sound is quite melancholic in a strange way. But the video is a masterpiece of great quality that needs to a higher audience. 9/10.
