WUSSTEST DU SCHON:
- WissenswertesThis film is one of over 200 titles in the list of independent feature films made available for television presentation by Advance Television Pictures announced in Motion Picture Herald 4 April 1942. At this time, television broadcasting was in its infancy, almost totally curtailed by the advent of World War II, and would not continue to develop until 1945-1946. Because of poor documentation (feature films were often not identified by title in conventional sources) no record has yet been found of its initial television broadcast. It's earliest documented telecasts took place in New York City Sunday 6 June 1948 on WATV (Channel 13), in Detroit Thursday 24 February 1949 on WJBK (Channel 2), in Chicago Monday 30 May 1949 on WBKB (Channel 4), in Philadelphia Friday 26 August 1949 on Frontier Playhouse on WPTZ (Channel 3), in Atlanta Tuesday 20 December 1949 on WSB (Channel 8), in Salt Lake City Wednesday 21 December 1949 on KDYL (Channel 4), and in Cincinnati Wednesday 4 January 1950 on WCPO (Channel 7).

To me, the oater's centerpiece is Maynard acting like a circus acrobat on the back of his horse Rocky. That comes early on, but his athletic moves continue throughout and are impressive as heck making me feel like a garden slug. Otherwise, the flick's a fairly standard kids matinee. Bad guy Arnold schemes to win a mining deed from gambling addict Hobson (Hayes) in a crooked poker game. Hero Carter (Maynard) battles Arnold's gang in an effort to get the deed back to needy Hobson. He's helped by sidekick (Knight) and Hobson's daughter (Leeds).
There's mostly hard riding around scrublands of greater LA, along with some fast shooting and flying fists-- standard stuff for matinee programs. However, silent screen actress Brent really registers as tough saloon girl Myra, who's abuse by Arnold is reflected in her sensitive inner moments. Also, catch Gabby Hayes in a straight role, again showing his versatility as a lot more than a comedic old grouch.
Anyway, it's a decent programmer with some novel camera shots and boisterous saloon crowds that add good marginal touches. So if you're an old front-row kid like me, don't miss it.
