This is no great film but pleasant enough. Two young lovers run off together and find themselves without money. But something turns up, and Massimo finds himself engaged in show business and is even successful, but gets involved with one of the dancers, which Gabriela, the fiancée, eventually discovers, and the best scene of the film is when she in fury beats up the rival. The most interesting character of the film is the man who saves her, who is a tenor who has left the opera stage after having lost his daughter. Gabriela reminds him of her, and that's why he grows attached to her and does everything to help them both. So it is actually a comedy but with some sinister ingredients. Gabriela plays both the part of the lost daughter and herself, and she is the delight of the film. The music is nothing special, but there is a great scene of a performance by a puppet show, where the discarded tenor sings in the background for the male puppet. There is much humour as well, and you will laugh heartily at times. It is an episode of entertainment and human complications but interesting and paving the way for Fellini.
